this is a song about sticking together with your lover and wanting to not mess things up. part of this worry is because the singer’s current partner reminds them of their past one.

in the context of your timeline, it could be that dave reminded you of someone you were with in the past or vice versa. (it doesn’t have to be in the romantic sense, fyi.) perhaps there was a disconnect between you two because of that. you still loved him, platonically or not, but thoughts of your past were often in your mind. this may have put a strain on your relationship. you both tried to make it work though, and i really do hope that it did.
