Ozz! I'm trying to get into drawing, but I'm absolutely horrid at it and have no idea where to begin. Do you have any tips for beginners? Also, what program do you use? I've heard Krita is good, have you heard of it?
Also, also, remember to hydrate properly and get a good amount of sleep and do lots of self-care! <33 we love you and your content; you make the world a brighter place ^^
~ 🐇
If you want to start from the very bottom, there's a website where the first lesson is drawing a line, quite literally. It builds your confidence with basic shapes, then moves on to more complex topics like textures, shapes in space, construction of real life objects and so on.
I've had it in my bookmarks for...gosh, years now. I should definitely pick it up again, haha.
I also follow Alphonso Dunn on YouTube, he has hundreds of art tutorials and exercises.
As for software, I briefly used Krita years ago and it was nice! It had a very easy interface and the brushes worked well if you wanted to reproduce traditional art. The only reason I didn't stick to it was because I already had PaintTool SAI and Photoshop at the time. When I got my first graphic tablet, I started with Paint.NET, though it was very simplistic.
The general consensus online seems to be Krita for painting or MediBang if you're into drawing anime. In terms of paid software, I think Clip Studio Paint is very popular and has a lot of resources, from brushes to 3D models. Photoshop is classic, but it can be overwhelming if you're new to digital art.
I personally use Procreate because it came with my iPad and it has a very simple menu. Some professional illustrators say it lacks the advanced options you'd find in other programs, and I do agree it may not be enough if you want to go beyond merely drawing. To add text and make small edits, I'll put the doodle through Photoshop, for example.
Free software: Krita, MediBang, Gimp, KRESKA.art (no installation required)
Paid software: PaintTool SAI, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, Clip Studio Paint
If anyone has more suggestions or tips, feel free to drop them in the comments!

Polyhedron of the Day #218: Compound of twelve tetrahedra with rotational freedom
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The compound of twelve tetrahedra with rotational freedom is a uniform polyhedral compound. It has 48 faces (all triangles), 72 edges, and 48 vertices. It is also known as the disnubahedron. Its Bowers-style acronym is dis. It can be constructed as a compound or by replacing each cube in the compound of six cubes with rotational freedom with an inscribed stella octangula. When the angle of rotation is set to be 45°, the compound of six tetrahedra results. It has octahedral symmetry. Its vertex figure is an equilateral triangle. It is self-dual.

it:s a foolish and inconsiderate question--inconsiderate because couched behind the question (statement) is what could have been easily just put-forth within the question instead of trying to lure me in with a mystery: I have an answer for you, but you must wait to hear it; surely in the time to write me there is just-as much time to not write, and provide in detail at a later time your full admission; and, the hidden aspect is: it is all just excuse with which to connect with me, and it is an excuse that uses my belief as a foot-in-door to do so, without bothering to understand my belief, as-if a more honest rewriting of the question could just be "be my friend?";
to me: it is as foolish and simple as left-handedness being "i am left-handed, i write with my left-hand," there is no philosophical depth to it as a being and associating it with there being a right-handed version can-be nothing more than 'yes, I have two hands, as most people do' -- to associate it with something ala "there is a right-handed version of me" removes it from the belief, and self-destructs within the belief; example: if every person has a right-handed (or left-handed) version of themselves, then there would not be a population disparity between left and right handed persons, as the ratio is ~1:9 left:right;
to the esoteric aspect of the belief, though it need not go much deeper than "i am left handed," the source of handedness stems from material of a spirit, broken from a whole root material that forms the greater right-hand; imagine a factory-line of ten clay vessels designed to hold a liquid, and in production one of the ten vessels shatters--the nine remaining are the right-hand, the splinters of the discarded are the left-hand--there is still no need to consider translations of a self between handedness here as there is the only esoteric distinction: versions of a production line; it is an exclusivist doctrine;
to the paranoid aspect: should you believe then in the esoteric, of the pots and splinters that make-up the versions of people within this world: the other people within this world are but ghostly images caught in the sparkling soul dimly seen on the inside walls of each clay vessel--and the people, themselves, are but illusory, and but exist to do naught yet confuse and drive a Godly desire for each person to 'connect'--which is the only truth to the original question; to connect;
why make art and post it for others? connect; why to talk to another person? to connect; why to learn about a belief? connect; etcetera and all invisible 'games' with which nerve-points are drawn to the skulls of people and fed, and circulated, back to a Heavenly impulse and body;
to God, and to the Heavenly impulse; a great and otherly vertice with which all following form is drawn from (using 3d modeling software terminology): from 2 is spline, from 3 is trinity/trigon, in shadow of 4 is quad, and then the righteous images are constructs of 3 as sets of 6, the sinister 4 as sets of 8; from underneath all of that is a chaos as-is the blankness of a fresh Blender instance without even the cube to greet you; from accordance of all the output are the language and input and programming cast-out from that Heavenly impulse though it were a server transmitting signals to its clients, and it together wants the clients connected and as diseased left disconnected; in Biblical reading: the Righteous spirit is the vessel with which had been stuck up-on this earth with a contamination of material upon the abstract spirit; the Sinister spirit is the vessel with which had been stuck here with contamination of spirit upon basic material; the fate of the latter is an annihilatory disconnection and for the former, a full subsumation into connection, and into the invisible host for eternity;
i write about it in my substack each week, on the sabbath, for the same dumb healthy purpose that drives anything outward: to connect, because more than want for friends i want that belief to grow.

one of these days im going to release my tlm drafting headcanons from my notes app purgatory and that day is Today.
HERE'S HOW I THINK LEGO MOVIE CHARACTERS WOULD PREPARE AND MAKE DRAFTS
...under the cut
Batman
• Fairly good at drawing. Somehow able to draw straight lines without a ruler perfectly fine every single time but otherwise nothing super noteworthy (he does brag about this constantly however)
• Drafts in white and yellow posca pen??? will use white colored pencil for finer detail however, specifically one of those mechanical colored pencils
• Drafts on black paper because he thinks it makes his designs cooler (it doesn't)
• Dimensions in imperial and would be annoyed if you dare even *insinuate* he use metric. no justification here
• Doodles around his drafts, specifically likes to doodle bats and himself because he, once again, thanks it makes his drafts cooler (the bats kinda do)
• Refuses to leave notes on his designs. you either know what to do or you don't
• Does however write his drawing title obnoxiously large
• Used autocad for like a day, hated it, switched to solidworks and never went back
• Buys autodesk licenses for the rest of the masterbuilders. unwillingly, mind you, wyldstyle just knows his credit card information and abuses it
Benny
• Good at drawing exclusively spaceships. big shock i know
• The king of eyeballing a line or an angle and then labelling it however the fuck he wants. proper measurements take time he could spend drafting or making more spaceships, he'll save measuring and straightedges for drafts he deems important enough
• Uses blueprinting paper. there's no practical purpose for this, he just digs it
• Drafts with whatever writing utensil is on hand
• He gets inspired quite often so he usually keeps a drafting notepad on him just in case
• Leaves a *lot* of notes. Most of them are completely unnecessary and are a funny contrast to his haphazard dimensioning
• Pretty dang good at autocad! Usually reserves it for projects that require a lot more collaboration however
• Usually drafts in metric, can dimension in imperial but prefers not to
• 100% sets autocad to the light background like a monster
• Do not give him any 3d modelling software, he might blow up the computer
Emmet
• Either really good or really bad at drawings (obvs leaning towards bad. we remember the break in plans)
• Dimensions in imperial. I cant justify this one he just does. god bless america or something idk
• Owns a couple drafting pencils but rarely uses them, most of the time he drafts in marker or pen much to the chagrin of anyone who needs to read his drafts (or delight if you're unikitty)
• Started learning how to use autocad after taco tuesday and he's actually pretty good at it! he does use an architectural dimstyle for everything though which is particularly annoying when he's quite often not drafting buildings now
• Has labelled and colored layers 👍 enough said
• Uses disgustingly thick lineweights. horrible.
• Rarely if ever 3d models so he's not good at it, he mostly works on things that 2d conveys better anyways
• Although he's not the best drafter of the master builders, his construction background makes him the best at reading drafts, give him a unikitty draft and he can decipher it like it's nothing
Metalbeard
• Probably the best at drafting of the master builders, he's got the age advantage and lots of practice from making ships
• Drafts in pencil, quill, or charcoal depending
• Who needs straightedges or angle stencils when youre basically a pirate cyborg, expect robot like precision
• Doesn't use standard measuring conventions, instead opts to use the dumbest things possible. The Sea cow's units of measurement were seagulls. It isnt that he cant do normal units of measurement, he just prefers his made up ones
• Makes his drafting paper by himself
• Pretty good with 2d and 3d modelling surprisingly. He doesn't like either, however, he much prefers drafting on paper
• Leaves an average amount of notes on his drafts but has the most disgustingly fancy cursive and writes in his piratey english. Often a nightmare to read if you aren't used to his writing
• Will sometimes do blueprint swaps with Benny wherein they critique each other's work. not sure when they started doing it, but it's become a weekly activity for them
Unikitty
• Worst drafter of the main masterbuilder crew. Most people think it's because she's a cat but no she just doesnt take drafting seriously in the slightest
• Drafts like she's making an arts and crafts project. She has put several bottles of glitter on singular drafts and she will do it again
• Dimensions in rainbows, no knows what this means other than emmet
• Gives the longest, most complicated titles possible
• No such thing as straight lines
• Is entirely capable of drafting properly, just refuses to
• Leaves notes that are entirely unrelated to the draft. she wont tell you how youre supposed to connect two objects but she *will* tell you about the sandwich she ate while making the draft
• Doesnt use autocad, looks too boring
• Didnt use any 3d modelling softwares until she realized you can change the appearance of materials. that was a game changer. still much prefers drafting on paper though
• Likes drafting with emmet sometimes since he seems to be the only person who understands her drawings. to this day no one understands how he does it
Vitruvius
• Going blind has, surprisingly, not made him much worse at drafting, just changed his process a bit
• Drafts in pencil
• Probably the person who least frequently drafts of the main masterbuilders. On account of just not needing to and also on account of being dead
• Dimensions in the old anglo-saxon units of measurement
• Doesn't title his drafts and doesnt see a point in doing so
• Leaves the most vague, utterly confusing notes on his drawings. theyre still related to the drawings unlike unikitty's notes, but theyre very odd
• Doesn't use autocad or 3d modelling softwares, partially because he wouldnt really be able to on account of being blind but also partially because he doesn't really know what they are
• There isnt really much to say about his drafting skills he's about as normal of a drafter as a masterbuilder can be
Wyldstyle
• An engineering teacher's dream student. She may not have the amount of experience metalbeard has but she's still very skilled
• Doesn't like drafting on paper and won't if she doesn't have to
• When she does draft on paper she uses a drafting mechanical pencils. she also 100% collects them
• dimensions in metric to exactly 3 decimal places
• leaves very few if any notes (always very concise ones if included)
• has a case of staedtler stencils that she bought 4 years ago and never uses
• picked up a habit of doodling on drafts from batman but will never admit she got the habit from him
• Autocad PRO. Also really damn good at solidworks and fusion. Give this girl a computer and she'll give you a motorcycle assembly within the hour
• Specializes in automotives
• Spends time with Emmet on the weekends teaching him how to use digital drafting softwares (this process was incredibly frusturating at first but gets easier with time)

So after watching wife @twosides--samecoin make some custom retextures to use in her screenshots, I decided to take a stab at it myself. As with all off-the-cuff decisions I make, it has become...involved.
Luckily for me, it has also become a collaborative project with wife! She has been learning this stuff for a while/has been providing infinite patience with my hyperfocus and swearing at the computer advice; meanwhile, her fic provides the test project: a standalone version of Olivia's vault suit. Thus far we have:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This first attempt is a bit crunchy, but I'm OK with it as a test. I am now handing it to my wife to Make It Better ™ and use/publish/reuse as she see might see fit 😂 (The maple leaf patch on the collar is still missing but one of us will get it there eventually...) What we've Learned So Far:
paint.net
basic creation kit use (I have avoided this for so long)
material editor use
2d texture painting/proper compression (I still refuse to paint directly in 3d modeling software, but it'll happen eventually)
material swaps in CK
armor addons in CK
armor creation in CK
dynamic retexturing
constructible object creation in CK
keyword use in CK
how to export to .ba2 archive (this is still loose files in a .zip atm because not quiiite done screwing with the maps, but file structure is in good order to be packed once complete)
how not to fuck up the base game masters
how to ensure your diffuse/normal/specular maps are actually the correct maps for the armor you wish to retexture instead of wasting 89234 hours on the wrong maps like a noob
how to read the nexusmods tutorials from start to finish like a normal person so you don't create an obscene number of problems you have to go back and fix later because you Did Not Read All The Instructions Before Starting The Assignment.
(Seriously 99% of the problems I encountered were due to Failure to Read All Instructions (or due to overlooking separate tutorials))

It used to be that when BMW would refit a factory to build a new car, the only way the automaker could check if the chassis would fit through the production line was to fly a team out and physically push the body through the process, making note of any snags.
Now, process engineers can simply run a simulation, sending a 3D model of the car through a near-identical digital twin of the factory. Any mistakes are spotted before the production line is built, saving time and money.
Such is the power of the industrial metaverse. Forget sending your avatar to virtual meetings with remote colleagues or poker nights with distant friends, as Mark Zuckerberg envisioned in 2021 when he changed Facebook’s name to Meta; the metaverse idea has found its killer app in manufacturing.
While the consumer version of the metaverse has stumbled, the industrial metaverse is expected to be worth $100 billion globally by 2030, according to a World Economic Forum report. In this context, the concept of the metaverse refers to a convergence of technologies including simulations, sensors, augmented reality, and 3D standards. Varvn Aryacetas, Deloitte’s AI strategy and innovation practice leader for the UK, prefers to describe it as spatial computing. “It’s about bridging the physical world with the digital world,” he says. This can include training in virtual reality, digital product design, and virtual simulations of physical spaces such as factories.
In 2022, Nvidia—the games graphics company that now powers AI with its GPUs—unveiled Omniverse, a set of tools for building simulations, running digital twins, and powering automation. It acts as a platform for the industrial metaverse. “This is a general technology—it can be used for all kinds of things,” says Rev Lebaredian, vice president of Omniverse and simulation technology at Nvidia. “I mean, representing the real world inside a computer simulation is just very useful for a lot of things—but it’s absolutely essential for building any system that has autonomy in it.”
Home improvement chain Lowe’s uses the platform to test new layouts in digital twins before building them in its physical stores. Zaha Hadid Architects creates virtual models of its projects for remote collaboration. Amazon simulates warehouses to train virtual robots before letting real ones join the floor. And BMW has built virtual models for all its sites, including its newest factory in Debrecen, Hungary, which was planned and tested virtually before construction.
To simulate its entire manufacturing process, BMW filled its virtual factories with 3D models of its cars, equipment, and even people. It created these elements in an open-source file format originated by Pixar called Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD), with Omniverse providing the technical foundation for the virtual models and BMW creating its own software layers on top, explains Matthias Mayr, virtual factory specialist at BMW.
“If you imagine a factory that would take half an hour to walk from one side to the other side, you can imagine it’s also quite a large model,” Mayr says. Hence turning to a gaming company for the technology—they know how to render scenes you can run through. Early versions of the virtual factory even had gaming-style WASD keyboard navigation, but this was dropped in favor of a click-based interface akin to exploring Google Street View in a browser, so anyone could easily find their way.
BMW also uses Omniverse for collaboration on car design and customization visualizations for customers, but a key benefit is being able to model production lines. New cars mean a new assembly process, but refitting a factory is a daunting process. Previously, key information was held in silos—production crews understood details of the assembly process, external suppliers had specs of new parts or machinery, architects had detailed building plans—and costs would pile up for every delay or mistake. “The later you find a problem, the worse it is,” says Lebaredian.
Now, problems are worked out virtually, with a central location for standardized data to be held. There’s still a critical human element: Mapping a facility requires sending a laser scanner strapped to a person running through a factory to capture point cloud data about how everything is arranged. Design engineers also need to create a 3D model of every stage of a car as it’s assembled. This level of detail allows BMW to virtually test the assembly process, complete with simulations of robotics, machines, and even human workers, as BMW has data tracking how long it takes employees to assemble a part.
The main idea is to avoid errors—does that machine even fit there?—but the system also enables optimization, such as moving a rack of components closer to a particular station to save steps for human assemblers. “You can optimize first and gain a lot of efficiency in the first production, and in the construction phase, you have fewer mistakes,” Mayr says. “It’s less error prone.”
Omniverse being a Nvidia platform, AI is naturally next. BMW is already layering in generative AI to help with navigation of its virtual models—they’re so massive that finding a particular point in the digital factory can still require asking a human expert for directions. But the aim is to use AI to optimize production lines too. “Because you have the whole data available, not just for one plant, it will be able to make good suggestions,” says Mayr—lessons learned in one factory could more easily be applied to others.
And then there’s robotics and other autonomous systems. Here, Omniverse can offer a digital space for testing before deploying in the real world, but it can also generate synthetic training data by running simulations, just as driverless car systems are trained with virtual video footage generated by AI. “Real-world experience isn’t going to come mostly from the real world—it comes from simulation,” says Lebaredian.
Aryacetas predicts that the biggest impact from the industrial metaverse will be embodied or physical AI—in other words, robots. “Robots aren’t fully there yet, but they’re rapidly training up to understand the physical world around them—and that’s being done because of these underlying spatial computing technologies,” he says.
The future of the metaverse isn’t avatars in a virtual world; it’s digital twins teaching industrial robots how to step out into the physical one.

Planning and estimating construction projects are crucial to their success. There are many complex processes involved. As part of this process, construction takeoffs are essential. Construction takeoffs are itemized and quantified lists of the materials, labor, and other resources required for construction projects.
Construction takeoffs are essential to project estimation, planning, and success in general. They give a thorough analysis of the necessary labor, materials, and resources, allowing for precise cost estimation and efficient project management. With enhanced accuracy and time savings, the process has been further streamlined with the introduction of digital takeoff tools and BIM-based solutions.
Importance of Construction Takeoffs
Accurate project estimation
Accurate project estimation is built on the foundation of construction takeoffs. Takeoffs give project stakeholders a thorough grasp of the project scope and associated costs by estimating the materials, equipment, and labor required. Realistic timetables and budgets can be created with the use of this information.
Enhanced project planning
A crucial aspect of project planning is takeoffs. Construction teams may create accurate project timetables, manage resources wisely, and spot potential bottlenecks or areas that need extra care with a full assessment of the available resources. This degree of planning ensures that the construction process runs more smoothly and helps to avoid delays and expensive change orders.
Improved communication and collaboration
Communication among project stakeholders is standardized by construction takeoffs. Takeoffs allow for simple and clear communication between architects, contractors, suppliers, and other team members by quantifying and clarifying requirements. This promotes teamwork and increases overall project efficiency by cutting down on ambiguity and errors.
Methods for Construction Takeoffs
Manual takeoffs
Traditional manual takeoffs entail looking at blueprints, plans, and specifications to manually calculate the amount of resources and materials needed. Even though it takes a lot of time and is prone to mistakes, this method is still employed occasionally, especially for smaller projects or when digital versions of certain details are not available.
Digital takeoff software
The building sector has undergone a change since the introduction of digital takeoff software. By eliminating laborious computations and lowering human error, these software solutions allow users to electronically measure quantities directly from digital designs. Software for digital takeoffs streamlines the process by providing features like annotation tools, automatic measurements, and simple cooperation.

Building Information modeling (BIM) is an clever software program modeling procedure that engineers, contractors, and designers can use to collaborate on a building’s layout, construction, and operation. It’s extra than just a version. It’s a method of gathering and handling facts at some stage in a building’s whole existence cycle.
BIM encompasses not simplest geometry and spatial relationships, however it also files constructing features, together with unique statistics about the sort of materials used, the quantity used, and the way the ones characteristics effect the building as a whole. BIM may be thought of as a database of facts ranging from task substances and cost – to the 3D version after construction – to operation of the facility. This records may be used to actively control a task each step of the way.
