Raiden will show up in like 2 shots in the next vid, but I gotta set him up for posterity so I've finally taken the time to rig his wig.

A fan animation I made of @spearxwinds character Talas! Really pleased with how it turned out in the end. Base Model was made by @the-mirror-sunflower-owo then I did rigging, animation and rendering for it. Go check them both out!
If anyone wants to use the Rig for something I'm happy to share it (not the model though, thats not mine to share sorry) for you to put your own sea monsters / dragons / whatevers on, just send me a message!
I might do another render with some compositor effects later if I feel like it.
Its rendered in Eevee, and everything was made in blender.

Its got Bendy bones with corrected rotation controls on all the five main spinal controls, IK targets for the spines, feet and hands are both IK blends with switchable Spaces, Pole Vectors and IK toggle Shoulders. It probably still wants a little more work if it was going to be in production, but for a little 1 week project in uni holidays I'm pretty pleased with where he is.

Fancy Glowstick time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
well after several SEVERAL! months I have FINISHED the final feature of her rig! (Minus the skinning because my plugin I use is VERY broken and I loathe skinning overall) BUT WE ARE END GAME NOW because my girl can "Fancy Glowstick" ON DEMAND! wish I could have kept her UI colorful but because of my lack of ability to script and Maya's hard limitations on reference or template mode I'm forced to have a monochromatic UI for my sliders.

Another character from the children's book series I've been working on, in 3D. Modelled in ZBrush and Maya. Textures in Substance Painter. Rigged in Maya. I used AntCgi's BipRig plugin for part of the rig setup, and added some of my own facial controls. All skinning done by me using ngSkinTools.

Yo your rigging skills are immaculate! Where did you learn such dark magics, I'm still learning modeling as a baseline. But I figured I might aswell ask then post it for others!
Helloo! Thanks for your compliment 🥹 I'm glad the stuff I do looks cool enough to make you say that.
Tumblr media
Part 1st - The Inception
When it comes to 3D I still consider myself more on the hobbyist side than the professional one.
I have a weird past in self-taught 3D modeling and game development at the same time so the logic for topology, weights, constraints and such seems to have a dedicated core in my brain that developed through sheer trial, error, tutorials and some actual studying. But I don't think I can exactly pinpoint a linear path that has taught me all of this.
Tumblr media
Part 2nd - The Ruse
On the other hand, low poly models are much more manageable than modern high fidelity stuff. That certainly works in favour of hiding my weak spots hahaha.
Tumblr media
Part 3rd - The Rigs
When it comes to the rigs I use in my videos, I've been testing different approaches. Thankfully, the extraction tools do preserve the original weights for the most part, but I have had to do weight necromancy to recover missing information sometimes, I made a script to recover missing weights whenever that happens.
My older MGS animations use just some basic IKs and Drivers on top of the deform bones (I should get fined for those crimes) because they were a ton of characters, I wanted to save time and the extraction workflow was pretty new to me and I didn't know what to expect next.
Tumblr media
For the newer ones, I started adding more complex control rigs until I hit a limit where it was not scalable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To speed things up, I now have a custom set of tools to quickly name bones and then I map them to a Rigify uh... rig. That's how I rigged The Boss for a recent video.
Tumblr media
Part 4th - The Craftpersonship
I do continue to make new rigs for original characters from scratch because I like to learn and improve in that front rather than just rely on tools to make them for me whenever I have the time for that.

I'm trying to make sure I still have time for personal stuff amidst all the commissions and professional projects. I was talking to someone about rigging in Blender and had an idea for dragon wings. Last time I tried this, it was a major hassle--although I was trying to make it work with Rigify samples and that was... a decision, lol. This rig is significantly more simple and also works better with more automation than my Rigify solution. In fact, it only took 5 control bones to animate this whole thing. Obviously the model and actual animation is really rough, but it's a serviceable proof of concept.
Tumblr media
The rig works with three layers: deformation bones, mechanism bones, and control bones. Deformation bones are what actually move the model. The next layer of mechanism bones handles under-the-hood stuff like IK constraints. Finally, the control bones are what I actually use to animate. All of the wing bones have rotation constraints, so all I had to do was move that red control and and the folding happened automatically. The membrane is a cloth simulation. There are some clipping issues with the body, but that's likely quite solvable with more time. The next step with a good wing rig is figuring out how to have a 2-sided wing membrane without messing up the cloth simulation. (also limbs and head so it doesn't look so much like a tadpole, LOL)

So, I mainly post art in this blog, but actually my main job is 3D rigging. What's 3D rigging?
In 3D animation the animator uses a "puppet" that he then animates. However to move the "puppet" you need a skeleton and a set of controls to allow the "magic" to be made. This is the role of the 3D rigger, to create the skeleton so that the "puppet" can move. The process is similar in 2D puppet animation by the way.
So enjoy my 3D rigging showreel, featuring the characters from the animated short "Emboucanator"!

Now I present to you 3 months of work; Twelve’s low-poly 3D model! Made by me on Blockbench and is available for free download on Sketchfab.
I always wanted to make a model of Twelve and I’m glad I got around to finishing him. Don’t know what I’ll use him for. Heck, I don’t know what you guys could possibly use him for! But no matter, he’s real now…
I hope you enjoy it. Try to have a good Sunday? (I never post on Sunday so we’ll see how this goes for me.)

Hello, How are you? I remember reading a long time ago that you are working in Animation and I wanted to know if you have any tips to get into an animation school.
Sorry for the weird question, I don't really know who to ask
Hello hello! I am fine thanks I hope you are too Anon ^^ No worries this isn't a strange question I am happy if I can help :))
Unfortunately I won't have much advices to give for some stuff, especially 2d animation schools.
I am specialized in 3d rigging and my school was for 3D/Cg animation and in France, so I know it can't apply on schools in other countries since all of them have their speciality.
I personnaly had a big entrance exam, where I had animation history, English and General knowledges tests + an essay to pass for writing. An oral test with a teacher/professional where you have to show your portfolio etc and storyboards and still drawings (here it was objects) to do in one day. But it depends on each school so if you have one in mind (especially if it's in the US) you can find some portfolio reviews on youtube really easily ^^
I do think there is wayyy more tutorials/reviews for 2d animation school (if you want 2D check for Calarts, Sheridan and Les Gobelins for example there are tone of videos for them ^^)
youtube
(here you go for example, and most of the time people answer question in the comments sections too :))
For 3d/cg hmmm it's great to have started a little bit 3D before school (blender exists now it's free yayy) But otherwise you don't have to have insane drawing skill to go in compared to 2d animation schools (I mean of course but voila ahah) The school is here also to let you learn, so of course you don't have to know everything about 3d before but it's nice to know some stuff before. Knowledges of the history of FilmMaking/Cinema and animation is always great!
If you wanna start with great basis, I think for 3d artist it's of course Anatomy for sculptor that comes first which explain really well sculpting (and topology too If I remember correctly) They are also a lot of tutorials on youtube for blender and maya
Tumblr media
I will be really honest but I am mostly specialized in 3D rigging which required more technical skills rather than artistic ones, compared to Texturing/Shading or Compositing for example.
In 3D you have differents jobs which can be classified like this (to take with a grain of salt of course, all specialities are both technical and artistic) and the more technical jobs you will have the more learning Coding is important too (but this can come after, just if you reallyyyyyyy want to do really advanced 3D/CG learning Python is always great)
For more general advices, I will say to just be curious ^^ Life isn't just about your job and people are always interested if you do sports/you go to museums/you watch movies etc. Idk for other countries but it was also pretty important for my school
And be aware that what is asked to the students change each year for the entrance exam (I passed mine when I was 17 so it was a long time ago already :') a lot of stuff must have changed)
Idk If I answered your question but that's all I can say for now. If you have more advanced question on CGI/3D I would probably be able to answer but not so much for 2D animation. And be aware that some jobs exist in both pipelines too! Like Storyboarders or Concept artists
I hope it helps a little and I hope you will get to go into this school ^^ Good luck!!
oh for 3d I definitely recommend this channel I love this guy a lot! He explains really well the basis for 3D animation and even if you don't wanna do that I do think it's interesting ^^
