Looks like reddit is about to get a whole lot worse. AI companies have been scraping reddit's content to use in language learning models and reddit's owners have decided that they should start charging for API use so they can cash in.
Unfortunately this will fuck up a number of 3rd party moderation and accessibility tools. These tools were built by users out of necessity reddit refuses to implement desperately needed functions themselves. reddit claims they will allow free use of their API for developers who build things to improve reddit, and they also claimed they will create better moderation tools for the site. But they have a long history of making bullshit promises like that.
Mods are extremely concerned about the rollout for the API changes. They are unsure how the communication (if any) will be provided and how quickly their mod teams can react. Mods and the developers for their 3rd party tools contribute an unbelievable amount of unpaid labor toward keeping reddit usable, which in turn contributes to reddit's overall value. Moving forward with switching to a paid API makes user lives harder without providing any compensation just to make money that will not be shared and, let's be real, will not be invested back into the site.
3rd party reddit readers are also in trouble with this change, which is bad news for every mobile reddit user. Reddit's official app sucks shit both in terms of features and stability. The developer of the free reddit app Apollo has obtained reddit's API pricing and it would cost him $20 million USD per year to obtain access for Apollo. This is more money than the app generates with paid subscriptions.
There are a lot of rumors that reddit wants to take its stock public which would explain why they are making money first, users last decisions such as this.
NYT article about this via archive.org (no paywall).
mod post from r/historians discussing the API access issue as well as reddit's history of failure to support its moderators.
Verge article discussing the API restriction impacting accessibility (note: no one from r/blind was not contacted to comment and the sub has a years long history of pushing reddit for better accessibility with reddit never once making any real commitment).
mod post from r/blind.
Additional mod post from r/blind with letter template for users to email reddit in protest of the API changes, as well as additional info about the changes.
mod post from r/apolloapp with info about API pricing (which is ridiculously expensive compared to other sites using a paid API model).
edit: btw if you make some kind of dumbass "this is good because I don't like reddit" comment you're a piece of shit.

Yet Another Summary of What r/196 is and the Current Reddit Drama
Some people in an apartment/dorm created a subreddit (a community on Reddit. Think a tag with its own moderators) for sharing memes called r/195, named after the room number. The only rule was that you had to post before leaving, which turned it into a shitposting subreddit and created the tradition of naming posts “rule”. After 420 weeks, r/195 was abruptly shut down and its users moved to r/196 (196 eventually had its own spin-offs like 197, 198, 19684, 196andahalf, etc).
For a subreddit with theoretically one rule, 196 was actually very moderated. Many rules got added over time like restricting certain controversial types of post to certain days, the ever changing rules about porn, and most importantly strong enforcement against bigotry. That made it one of the few mainstream shitposting subreddits with a largely left-leaning and/or LGBTQ audience.
Recently Reddit announced API changes that effectively end 3rd party apps. That forces users to use their horrible official app, which makes moderation harder, reduces accessibility for disabled people, and a bunch of other things people have written whole essays about. Users only have two ways to put any real pressure on the administrators running the site: negative media coverage (this has required multiple mass shootings by site users to be effective) and, more recently, blackouts.
All content on Reddit is made by users and posted to communities run by users. The main page is simply a collection of popular posts from these communities. A blackout is when the moderators of many large communities coordinate to make them private or block all new posts until a demand is met. This has been tried twice before and succeeded both times: one time to shut down the Covid misinformation subreddit r/nonewnormal, and one time to fire an admin who defended her pedophile father and banned any mention of her name. Also worth noting there’s a *lot* of history with Reddit admins and pedophilia that deserves its own write up.
People are less hopeful this time due to less participation in the blackout and the CEO quadrupling down on the API change. Again, there’s much more to that drama including lying about conversations, recorded phone calls, accidentally revealing he was using copy-pasted responses, and admitting the company wasn’t profitable to try and win an argument. Since it’s clear there will be no change and many communities will be gone forever, there’s an exodus of many of them, including 196, to other platforms like Lemmy, Mastodon, Discord, and Tumblr.

Rec list: short books / novellas read in 2023
Autobiography of Red - Anne Carson (160 pages): a coming of age novel about a young man who is secretly a winged red monster. A wonderful, strange book that's also an ancient Greek myth retelling/translation.
She of The Mountains - Vivek Shraya (128 pages): this book feels so much like Autobiography of Red I wondered if it was an inspiration. A lovely, tender, lyrical story of a bisexual boy's first love woven with a retelling of a Hindu myth.
Loaded - Christos Tsiolkas (151 pages): another coming of age story - a young Greek-Australian man's 48-ish hours of nihilistic hedonism. Unrelentingly brutal prose style & a complicated, unlikeable protagonist. A little fucked up, very compelling.
The Yellow Wallpaper - Charlotte Perkins-Gilman (63 page short story): for the women trapped in rooms and/or the women slowly going crazy enjoyers. Iconic piece of early feminist horror and a 5 star read.
The Vegetarian - Han Kang (208 pages): A woman having strange dreams about meat decides to become vegetarian. That's all I can tell you, this book is best read blind. Very fucked up (complimentary).
Giovanni's Room - James Baldwin (159 pages): A claustrophobic story about love, shame, codependency, and the monster self-hatred can make of us.
The Husband Stitch + Especially Heinous - Carmen Maria Machado (short stories): cheating bc I read her entire collection 'Her Body and Other Parties', but these were standouts and they're both available online. The first - feminist horror retelling of the Girl with the Green Ribbon folk tale, the second - weird fiction take on Law and Order SVU, problematizing the use of sexual assault victims' suffering as entertainment.
We Had To Remove This Post - Hannah Bervoets (86 page short story): A social media moderator reflects on the effect constant exposure to violent/depraved/conspiratorial content had on her mental health and relationship with her girlfriend. I wasn't all the way sold until about 2/3rds in, but since it's only 80 pages that hardly matters. Cool use of an unreliable narrator.
Lie With Me - Phillipe Besson (148 pages). A secret first love between two boys in the French countryside of the 80s, and the long years after they part. Sentimental and cinematic. If you love melodrama and tragedy you'll enjoy this.
** check content warnings for. well basically all of these tbh.
Please add to this list with your own recommended short reads 💖

Headsup if anyone uses Gfycat for fannish purposes - All content on Gfycat will be deleted after 1 September 2023. I think we're seeing a lot of social media websites killed or self-immolating. Twitter is rate-limiting the number of tweets a person can even read. Tumblr won't let anyone send asks, even anon, without logging in. Reddit has crippled even 3rd party moderation tools. Discord is doing the whole username change thing. I'm just really really tired 🫠.

Introducing Discuit: An Easy-to-Use, Open-Source Social Media Platform
Welcome to Discuit!
We are an open-source alternative to Reddit, although we have steadily been gaining a bigger audience from all over the internet.
On the 16th of June, 2023, Discuit was launched as a reaction to the Reddit drama regarding the forced shutdown of practically all of its 3rd-party apps and tools. It was a pretty barebones platform at first, with only one main community, and only text posts.
Now, about 8 months later, Discuit has over 5000 users, and is still slowly but surely growing. We've gotten many more features, such as different post types, the ability to request your own community, and several 3rd-party tools are being developed!
Right now, you might thinking "Hey, this platform seems nice, but what makes it different?" It is, after all, made as an alternative to Reddit- it's not really its own platform, some could say.
And, well, there are a few things!
First of all, one of Discuit's main goals is to prevent the enshittification that caused Reddit's decay. This means that our monetisation strategy will not revolve around ads, ever. All we have in terms of monetisation at the moment is a Patreon, the proceeds of which far exceed our current hosting costs. In the future, we might add things like Discuit Premium (similar to things like Discord Nitro), which adds some cosmetic options. We may also add a feature similar to Reddit's Awards, but at the moment, neither of these are necessary.
Another of Discuit's core goals is quite similar to what makes Tumblr so beloved among its users; a lack of algorithm. There are no addicting strategies to keep users here: no requiring registration simply to view content, no popups asking you to sign up every single time you navigate to a new page, a mobile browser experience that doesn't suck in order to drive people to the app, the ability to turn off infinite scroll- it's all here, and more will come in the future.
Discuit is not designed to be as attention-grabbing possible, unlike most platforms nowadays. It's simply a community, and that's what makes it so awesome.
The third of our core principles is the ability to customise as much as possible about your experience. Right now, these options are relatively simple, and mostly include the ability to disable infinite scroll, but they will be expanded upon in the future. Users will eventually be able to filter out all low-effort/meme content, for example, and only see the really good stuff. Or the inverse, if you're just looking for the memes.
Communities will also have more customisation options. These will include things like a "point" (somewhat like Reddit Karma) requirement before being able to join or post in a community, options for more experienced users to be able to help the moderation team using a flagging system, and much more.
If all of this sounds like your cup of tea, then come on over to discuit.net! We have a wonderful community there, and we'd love to see you there!
If you're still curious about the site, we have a few places where you can find more information:
Discuit's Substack (Note that the few posts we have here are relatively old, and may be outdated.)
Discuit's GitHub repository (Not necessarily for finding information, but you can look/add to the code behind the platform here!)
Discuit's most official community, Discuit! This is where all major announcements regarding the platform are posted, and where you can find the latest version of the roadmap.
Thanks a ton for reading! We hope you have a good time with us.
With love,
The Discuit Admin Team

Reddit is apparently about to ruin itself. They're going to charge significantly more for API access, effectively killing 3rd party apps, which then makes moderator tools disappear. The creator of the Apollo app claims they quoted an estimated $20 million PER YEAR for API access
There's also going to be a new NSFW policy, banning all such content from the API, and inviting Tumblr comparisons.
It's suspected this comes before Reddit IPO, trying to sanitize the site and make it appear more valuable to investors
These changes are effective July 1 2023

I have disabled my reddit app in solidarity with the reddit blackout.
Tumblr media
reddit needs to understand that the value of the website is due to the user generated/shared content & the thankless work of volunteer moderators. The 3rd Party API changes would curtail both users ability to engage on the platform and moderator's ability to effectively moderate the site.
For more background on the issue and what's at stake, I'd recommend reading this article:

am i the only one who at this point gets blazed exclusively softcore porn? like when blaze first came out it was mostly eclectic memes, cringey fanfic i didnt care about, etc. but now it’s exclusively either softcore porn or advertisements for someone’s onlyfans/3rd party porn. which i dont want to fucking see!!! and it seems to me, rather than having to actually moderate for adult content and not allow it to be blazed, this is why staff introduced the filter for mature posts? but i dont want to have to filter EVERY post deemed “mature,” because i trust that any mature content posted by the people i follow post isnt going to be pornographic. i don’t want to end up with a sanitized version of my dash just to be able to not see mature content by random people i didnt choose to follow or consent to see! this should be common sense for a feature like this. i mean even on twitter where they allow literal porn and you can filter out adult content, i think any sponsored post is supposed to be all ages appropriate, right?

Supreme Court To Determine The Scope Of Tech Company Immunity
By Alek Hedlund, Liberty University Class of 2022
October 9, 2022
Tumblr media
The Supreme Court, in its upcoming term, will address the extent of tech company liability protections for content on its platform. The legal question surrounding Gonzalez v. Google consists of whether tech companies can be held liable for recommending harmful content through its user-targeting algorithms. Gonzalez specifically involves a 2015 ISIS attack in Paris, France. The petitioners seek to exclude Google’s liability protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act for increasing access to ISIS recruitment videos for its users. Section 230 provides immunity from lawsuit for third-party content that is published on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google. It allows tech companies to operate without being concerned with moderating all problematic content on their sites. Google argues that a broad reading of Section 230 bars the petitioner’s claim. They urge that failing to recognize these protections would render the purpose of the statute useless. The U.S. District Court for Northern California, as well as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, agreed with Google. The Supreme Court granted the writ of certiorari, agreeing to hear the case, on October 3rd. Overall, the Supreme Court’s ruling in Gonzalez will have a notable effect on how tech companies address third-party content in the future.
