Had a series of nights with really heavy rain this past week and it got me thinking again about Murph's crippling fear of rain (understandable in a world where it will boil your skin, but it's an extreme phobia even by witch standards)

And they never ever admit it out loud but Steve still knows about it, even when they're kids, because they aren't as good at hiding it as they think, and he never says a word because he knows that pointing it out would wound their pride far more than the fear wounds them. Plus, if he points it out they’ll probably get offended and stop staying at his house as much, and then how would he comfort them? So for years he's pretended to be scared of the rain too so that Murph can think they're being the brave protective one, and by comforting him they find a way to comfort themself without having to admit to any kind of weakness

Of course Steve is doing it out of love (and maybe the ulterior motive of having an excuse to get physically close to them) but in a backhanded way it’s kind of detrimental? It’s another way that Steve coddles Murph’s ego so that they don’t have to admit to any of their flaws or shortcomings, and in the process gives himself another (nonexistent) weakness for them to judge him over. He could so easily be the hero of this very trivial scenario but Murph can’t handle being saved. They have to be in control, all the time, even if that means bottling up their fear and losing sleep from panic attacks instead of just asking for a bit of comfort

They do know that he’s pretending, eventually. Steve is not a good liar. They don’t fully understand why he does it instead of just calling them out but it’s become such a routine and such a part of their coping mechanism that they don’t want to break the illusion, so they play along. And it works well enough until he’s not around anymore and they have to learn how to cope by themself again. Even in Murph’s darkest lowest points, even when they’re sworn enemies and they try to kill Steve on sight, they still miss him whenever it rains

you know something that has bothered me about persona 5 ever since I played it is how they don’t address Yusuke’s attitude towards art.

He idealises the artistic process to the point its clearly self destructive (ie doesn’t eat , doesn’t have any money ect) and more concerning the idea of the true artist. The artist who is divorced from all worldly needs and pleasures the artists who has cut themselves off completely from society all in the name of their unbending artistic vision.

The best example I can think of off the top of my head is when he comes over to Ren’s house he gets them to watch art documentaries with him and if I’m remembering correctly the guy in the documentary left his family and completely cut himself off from society for the sake of his craft and yusuke considers this aspirational.

The problem is this attitude isn’t actually all that helpful. Any work done while depriving yourself is never the best work you could have made whether that be of sleep , food , social interaction , joy ect and art devoiced from society lacks meaning the best art isn’t completely removed from the human experience it reflects and comments it on it

but more so then this mindset being destructive and a tired idea I have distain for it feels like such a clear extension of Madarame’s abuse. We see Madarame also holds this mindset so Yusuke must have gotten it from him and it seems to disproportionately benefit Madarame and reminds me of abusive behaviour.

if yusuke doesn’t value and understand money or the worldly pleasures it can afford him then he won’t be bothered by Madarame receiving all the money from his works and it makes him more dependent on Madarame / the school he goes to because he can’t for example take the train , afford food or housing and it somewhat limits him socially making it harder to go out with friends.

if yusuke thinks that the only compensation a “true artist” needs is the artistic fulfilment of completing a work then he won’t be bothered by Madarame taking the credit

if yusuke thinks he needs to cut himself off from the world and others then he will be less likely to realise that what madarame is doing is wrong but also that he is completely dependent on madarame.

It introduces this dynamic that wanting anything that doesn’t contribute to the art is bad and makes you a worse artist a worse person. Its assigning morality and success to the behaviour that madarame wants to incentivise and disincentivise he wants yusuke to make more art but he doesn’t want to yusuke to become disconnect or independent so the sentiment that to be a true artist you must let go of worldly possessions once again loops back round to reinforcing abuse

even though he is out of the abusive environment he still hasn’t unlearned/been confronted on this mind set.

i’ve probably posted something like this before but idc. the persona fanbase narrative that the investigation team has the best group dynamic of the persona games makes me think that every persona fan either has no friends, or has really shitty friends. almost every character at some point does something that goes far beyond the line of “friendly banter” and into the straight up insane.

at least in persona 5, as underdeveloped as some of those relationships are, the characters don’t treat each other like shit and try to pass it off as them just being close friends. and i’ll say it, persona 3’s cast is what people say persona 4’s cast is. by the end of that game, i feel so convinced that the characters in that game have unbreakable bonds with each other. it doesn’t feel forced like persona 4, it just works.
