While on a canal boat in Amsterdam, the Beatles see a random man in a cape and like it so much, they get Mal Evans to get off the boat, track the man down, and buy it from him

They then get copies of the cape made, though these replicas are so cheap they reportedly disintegrate in the rainstorm that greets them later in Sydney, Australia.

Presumably the second try, for the movie Help!, were made of sturdier stuff.
