Confessions of Binx’s Medical Emergency

Friday night we went to bed and I woke to a horrific scene where vomit puddles everywhere and a very scared cat unable to pee despite continual non stop tries on l’y resulting in one foam puddle and lots of little droplets everywhere. My fur baby of 11 years was in

meidical crisis that was if left untreated more hours would be fatal.

The first place was now in reflection all about greed to get as much of your money as possible without best interest of animals in mind. Before anything they drugged him up to relieve pain and my cat came back into me unresponsive and rag doll limp appearing dead I totally lost it as I held him and knowing I had to leave him to possibly never wake from anesthesia.

So after overdose of medicine for profit and doing anesthesia when I later learned could of just sedated to place catheter, also tried to force me to fix him. He is 11 years old and I made a decision not to after lots of reasearch years ago. I hate how they can never respect that when I take him in for any vaccinations or care. The vet called me and for 15 min. I had to tell her no do not fix him while he is already under for the catheter. How cruel to ever consider doing such a thing when it is the same region he was already having critical problems with. Then the vet called again starting with “ Binx is okay...” only for her to then tell me he needs surgery and it would be $6000 for just that or I have to decide to kill him and had an hour to decide and call back. I went full on hysterical. How dare I have to be told kill an otherwise totally healthy animal because I don’t have that kind of money. I had already made sure with bloodwork his kidneys were healthy and it was solely the bladder only involved. As I applied for credit pet care and denied on all due to no credit history I called my parents to help me find a solution.

My mother then called and basically said we don’t have that and we will not put him down. We figured get through weekend having him stay at the hospital monitored and take him to his usual vet on Monday.... the vet then in a bitch remark mentioned another location I could try to call for a better price. So we called over and they gave me an estimate of $1300. Mind you I had already signed over $1800 to the first ER who has given me a hellish time to refund some of that since he did not stay in their care the full 24hrs i paid for.

The second place isn’t an ER but was open on a Sunday amazingly. I asked if they had any appointments and after telling the situation they squeezed me in at opening 8am and a surgery for later in the day.

Got him that next morning. The poor baby was barely alert or moving. My cat I have had since there was still baby teeth in his skull was silent for the first time ever in his life and barely breathing or opening eyes. They did the surgery successfully. In there found the bladder full of stones and blood clots and it clear the bladder lining extreme thickening which means it was going on for a long time. They did confirm with X-ray that they got them all and now it’s all a wait and pray to recover.

He had a low temperature that was not raising and was not alert and responsive as they had expected. It was enough to have then put in for a transfer to the place they had a agreement with to watch pets who need monitored overnight during the hours the place is closed. So I had to go get my cat take him to another city and then return to get him before 9am the next day to take him back. Mind you I don’t drive so this only makes this all the more complicated. He was breathing so faint I only could tell from a hand on his body. His head tilted up in the back corner facing away the whole ride over to the night monitor location was deeply troubling. I told him he has to fight to recover and cannot give up and leave me alone. We aren’t quitters so don’t he dare we are survivors and he will get through this we have faced so much worse and wound up okay.

He finally was alert this morning when I got him. Stood up even in this box and was checked back into the place of surgery. He was much more aware but still blood in urine. Got to go before they closed up for the night to visit. Standing on my toes reaching to the back of these cages my arms barely able to reach let alone to avoid bowls of water and food to do so when the bottom of cage is at my eye level. He finally let out a meow when I first was there which he hadn’t made a sound since the day before on Friday when he had fallen asleep as always in my arms.

My apt is eerily quiet to where silence is deafening and without him I can’t begin to fall asleep despite the fact I last slept was that Friday late evening. They will probably keep him until his catheter does not have blood in urine and remove it. Then monitor another day before sending him home with medication and a new diet to follow for the remainder of his life that will be more expensive of course. I inquired I am looking at three liquid medications and one pill to be administered once he is back home.

They have him on fluids so he is all swelled up from them but he is coming around slowly. His fiesty self is back and was told at the clinic he anytime out on the table waves the paw with the iv on at them to try to get them to take it out hah. I literally lost my female when she was just 23 days into her 10th year. So I held my breath this whole 10th year with him terrified and had only just relaxed a bit in January as he turned 11 to then be hit with this out of nowhere. He had no signs up until last week and then Saturday unable to urinate at all trying nonstop without success.

This has been emotionally exhausting and quite stressful. Not to mention I’m now more broke then ever using the last of money from a small settlement that took over 5 years to obtain from being run over walking in a crosswalk at 16 the first night of summer prior to my senior high school year. Guess that brain damage was worth it to have ability to save him... hah.

He literally is the last piece of happy memories I have to countless friends I have buried in the past 6 years. He has given me a reason to stay alive and got through so much together. Truly this cat tried to even stop me from being robbed. He is my protector well he tries anyways. My date when I get ghosted. My wake up call. My chatterbox to always tell me what is on his mind and give me a piece of it. Demanding yet sometimes in my best interest like when I really need to go to bed and he demands we do so. My cuddle bug that took place of my childhood stuffed bear in my arms at night to sleep. My little fashionista strutting around in his little shirts he adores wearing. I cannot imagine losing him right now and not when it was not doomed to reoccurrence let alone fully healthy otherwise.

Pray I have the strength to keep going and hold my emotional basket case self together for him to give the best care possible. He came into my life when I was trying to relearn how to do everything and have coping skills because my brain was no longer able to work how it did prior to the accident. He came when I was so alone and no one asked me to my senior formal dances and let me cry until he was fur soaked tears. He makes every day one that I get to smile and this apartment be full as if there was more then one human. Truly this main man of my house just happens to walk on all fours that left pawprints on my soul that is priceless enough to put all I had into his best interest of care. I love my Binx he deserves to live when he is still so much alive and has so much more love to extend

Anyways once I know more I shall update. I’m praying 🙏🏻

Update : 8am got a call he was not doing great still more blood then they would of expected in urine and was an unhappy kitty who would bat at the vet techs and not let anyone pet him. Not eating or drinking enough and probably going to need to stay a day or more longer in the Hospital then expected. He is very much attatched so I made the trip to go visit him this time I asked for a stool to stand on to not need to stand on my toes to reach him in the back of this high row of cages.

My visit apparently made a world of difference and he was more his old self even got some meows out of him! I was so happy to see him more himself and he even by the time I left after spending close to two or more hours visiting had less blood in his urine. Nocturnal Nemesis

(This piece was originally written in 2013)

So I thought that eventide musings were only for the insomniac or hopelessly in love. I was wrong. I had recently been – by default – appointed as babysitter and temporary primary care-giver for my sister’s kids while she was out of town on a 2-week training course. Happy days; considering that 2 of said kids are a pair of 6-year old twins. My sleep patterns had been sufficiently disrupted to the point where I had defaulted to auto-pilot on all but the most intricate of my daily tasks. Having to sleep in someone else’s bed and having to be woken up at ungodly hours of the night/morning, really were playing havoc. I was utterly not myself anymore. I am not the girl to walk into the office and break into mirthful laughter at the question of “How are you doing this morning?”!

So early one morning – I have no idea as to what time it was, just that it was still dark outside and even the neighbourhood dogs were quiet – I am woken up by the female half of the twins. She’s standing by the side of the bed, dishevelled hair and clutching her pink teddy bear, panic-crying. Now, on a good day, I am not the type of person you wake up abruptly and expect to coordinate myself with any measure of accuracy or grace. And especially not when the waking is done by a screaming toddler my scum-bag brain so ghoulishly mistook for a para-human critter of sorts.

I manage to mumble the obvious question and she proceeds to tell me through her sobs that she needs to go pee-pee, but there is a spider in the bathroom. Right. This is where it gets tricky. I am unashamed to admit the fact that at 29 years of age, I still go into a frozen panic at the sight of spiders. I don’t care the species. For a moment my brain forgets its trolling and tries to imagine that it has dreamed the description of the situation that has placed the baby in such a state. However, her insistent crying – both from the terror of the arachnid presence and the pressure of her full bladder – cements the realization that I will have to get up and do … WHAT???

As I pull myself upright and reach for my specs, I consider waking 6’s older brother who is crashing in the lounge. However, the thought of having to try waking him up – which would take a fair amount of waking – and running the risk of spidey making a duck for it, had me scrounging for resolve: I will have to eradicate the threat myself. OK. As I walk around the bed to where I left my slip-ons, I become aware of little things; the night breeze through the open window, the slight layer of dust on the floor, the cat engaging in nocturnal grooming, one leg stuck straight up in the air and its snout buried in its nether regions.

I stop a foot or so from the bathroom door – 6 and her teddy dutifully following suit – to inspect the perimeter. Nothing immediately threatening, so I proceed. Only to stop dead in my tracks a second later. There, right next to the toilet paper rail, sits our nocturnal nemesis. Well, it’s no Daddy Long Legs, but it’s still just LEGS! And a FAT ass. A shiver runs down my spine. I lift my right foot slowly, reaching back for my weapon of choice – my brand new baby-blue slip-ons, bought not a week earlier. Making sure I have a firm grip on it – nothing is worse than missing a spider on the first try – I slowly stalk my prey. Times like these I am thankful that I am a cat person. Valuable stalking lessons and observations over the years were doing me a world of favours right then.

As I reach out my hand, making sure to position it below the spider and slowly closing the distance, I feel my heart rate spike. Adrenaline is such a bastard sometimes, but in the back of my head I can hear Vin Diesel as XXX shouting “I live for this shit!” With my hand brandishing the weapon now about half a foot away from the spider and sure I will not miss my mark, I execute a scared-little-girl’s version of the Hulk Smash on the spider, and if the movies have taught me anything, I go for the double-tap. In the resounding silence that follows, I observe the brown smudge that’s left on the wall, and the decimated spider corpse on the floor.

The baby goes ahead and takes her long-awaited pee-pee, first carefully placing teddy on the floor next to the corpse, as if to establish some sort of universal order for such things. I take my turn right after the baby and I can’t help but feel – as the toilet flushed – like a matu-fatu superhero walking away from an explosion.

So we manage to snuggle back down, and I assure myself that these twin babies are still the sweetest little people with a brief peck on the cheek for each of them.

…only to be woken I’m sure not long after, by a little boy's voice next to me saying “I can’t sleep…”

We only had a 3km drive to the park entrance and we were soon in Masai Mara park, what a dream. However, we started to realise that the little girls huge enthusiasm for nature had the strong potential to become rather irritating. Every time she saw a living creature she would go nuts. Like, any living creature. She would squeal (not recommended on safari by the way as apparently wild animals have ears) and she would say the name of the animal repeatedly.

Literally, she saw a vulture, I mean, we ALL saw the vulture, and she was like

‘Vulture! Vulture! Vulture! Vulture! VULTURE!’.

Then we saw some VERY boring birds.

‘Oh look, there’s GUINEA FOWL! THEY ARE SO CUUUUUTE ooooohhhhhh GUINEA FOWL! GUINEA FOWL! HI THERE GUINEA FOWL! ’

Whenever we saw a warthog, which was maybe 100 times, she jumped up and down shouting ‘Pumba! Pumba! I SEE A PUMBA!!’

Phil looked at me with a very straight face and I’m certain if he’d seen a lion at that moment he’d have thrown her out of the jeep.

BUUUUUTT, eventually her OTT squealing calmed and she became a bearable human being to be around.

We chatted to the parents who were really nice and were on holiday from living in Doha, which from their description, sounds like one of the last places we’d want to live. But each to their own.

We spotted so many things, but the morning highlight was went Joffrey spotted a white dot in the far distance. Yes the white dot cat was a rare type of cat that only has two lets OK FINE only joking. So yeah, we could kind of see this dot, then it disappeared. We waited around and looked through the binoculars, then Joffrey decided to head closer in our vehicle. We reached the dot and somehow ended up about 1 metre away from an ACTUAL cheetah, sat casually next to a tree like a normal cat, pretty much posing for us. Then it just rolled around on its back playfully. Was AMAZING! 😬

Then we saw a mother cheetah with her 3 grown up cubs having a cheeky sleep in the sun. We then saw a massive sleeping male lion tucked hidden behind some bushes!

We had a morning tea & biscuits break under a nice tree where we all got out of the car to stretch our legs (and pee behind the car) taking care to keep a watch out for animals (seemed a little dicey to me but Joffrey was super chill about it so everyone pretended they were too) then 12:30 was lunch (not a moment too soon). Again, it was under a tree but this time we sat on some Masai blankets (uh, in a park with big cats - don’t ask) and had spaghetti noodles, eggs, biscuits, oranges and juice. Joffrey said he could see some hyenas nearby but that we could see them after lunch - how nice of him. If they didn’t come over to eat us before we’d finished that is (a clan of hyenas can devour a whole zebra including bones leaving NO TRACE within 30 minutes).

The afternoon was when we looked for lions mainly, but saw tons of other stuff as we drove. Phil and I had the best seats in the front but boy, was it blasting heat on us. So we used our Masai blankets to creat cloak / hammocks as we stood up through the roof hatch getting toasted. we only bashed our sides a few thousand times as we bumped along. My hat completely flew off and I’m not sure if we were in a dangerous spot, but even Joffrey wouldn’t get out to retrieve it. I managed to open the door and ingeniously swipe it up with my foot so the little girl could catch it. She was growing on me now, she certainly had her uses.

Right at the end, we finally saw female lions! Unfortunately we were quite far away but was cool anyway of course. Joffrey said if the rangers weren’t there at that moment, he could have driven closer, but had to be careful incase they decided to tell him off. The rangers decided to drive up to our vehicle the moment we spotted the lions to ask for everyone’s tickets as a random inspection.

Was so annoying, especially as we couldn’t find them for ages..

All in all, we saw:

And after 10 hours of intense African sun, we headed back.

As we drove through the little town by the entrance, the kids shouted ‘Packed lunch!’ and held their hands out. So the little girl handed out all of our spare food of biscuits and snacks, even the biscuits she LOVED and had put aside for herself. Was sweet.

We stopped off to buy some bits as had made the tough decision to make our own breakfast the next day (I know, absolute heroes) so I bought a couple of avocados for 10p each.

Came back to the vehicle proudly to show everyone my purchase and it turned out the avocados I’d bought were actually MANGOS so I went back to find a different shop for avocado hunt take 2! Found one ripe one PHEW our breakfast was saved, white middle class crisis over thank GOD.

Phil bought 4 eggs and some bread and we were good to go ‪for breakfast tomorrow‬ - saving 18.50$ in the process. All the food we bought cost $1.50.

After the dust and sweat of safari life (I’m not complaining tho) the awesome shower was very welcome and then straight onto dinner.

Back to Jessie’s food diary.

That dinner was SO GOOD. We had a DELICIOUS dinner of a vege spring roll starter, onion quiche, dauphinoise potatoes and green beans main, and then a choc cake with cream dessert.

We chatted to the family some more - James from UK & Larissa from Mexico & the little girl Liloosh - and we had totally changed our mind about the little girl. Her biggest crime was her enthusiasm and actually she’d not complained once throughout the whole safari. She wanted to be a vet and loved animals more than anything (she even got excited about the field mice that were by the camp gate when we’d arrived back) and was a really sweet girl who loved drawing. Felt bad for imagining her as lion food...

A Period/Menstrual Cycle/”Shark Week”/”Moon Cycle”/”Heavy Day” For Those Without Female Bodies (cis men, nonbinary peoples, etc.) & Those New To Dealing With This Stuff

So I’ve noticed a lot of cis men get uncomfortable talking about this, but it’s frickin important so listen up everyone of any gender identity who doesn’t understand this! Let’s take an uncomfy trip down Gross Female Body Lane so that when someone tells you “it’s Shark Week”, “it’s my heavy day”, or “I’m bleeding” you know what to think/say/do (when your nonbinary friend/transgender friend/female friend tells you this)! :D

First of all. THIS IS A NATURAL PROCESS. STOP GETTING GROSSED OUT. IT ANNOYS US. The body does this naturally. It’s like if you only peed somewhere around once a month. Our bodies have to do this. It’s peeling off the inner walls of one of our organs, kicking out all the blood and guts, and fixing the old gross wall. THIS PROCESS CAN BEGIN ANYWHERE BETWEEN EIGHT AND OVER EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD. THERE IS NO SET TIME FOR EVERYBODY. IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU THEY’RE DEALING WITH THIS, THEY MOST LIKELY ARE.

I have a female body. I am a transgender male (f2m, obviously). I can’t afford testosterone/however you spell that male hormone stuff (I think that’s correct but IDK I don’t write it out a lot). I get these. They frickin hurt. They’re not fun. Let me explain why.

SO. We start with the pre-blood. It’s cramping, like a REALLY bad stomach ache, and utter exhaustion. It also comes with rapid mood swings. Anger, crying, fear, giggling, all kinds of craziness. This is normal. It’s the female hormone, estrogen, doing its thing.

After the pre-blood stuff comes usually a little “leakage” or faint blood on your underwear/liner. This is the first stage of bleeding.

There’s a TON of pain. We start to crave sugar, especially ice cream and chocolate. Dark chocolate is the best to alleviate cramping, but any chocolate will do. Provide your friend/family/coworker/whoever needs the stuffs with chocolate. Also potentially provide cuddles, fuzzy warm blankets (we get REALLY COLD flashes where we’re stupid cold for no reason, then it swings to REALLY HOT flashes), & a comfy piece of furniture that is safe to potentially get blood on it.

There will be leaking. No matter how many tampons or pads or menstrual cups you use, there will be leaking. Your body is emptying an entire frickin organ from itself. Don’t beat yourself/your people up for this.

There will be flooding. This is the next stage, what we often call “the Heavy Day”. There can be anywhere from one day to two weeks of this. This can happen in bed, at school, when you go to the bathroom, ANYTIME. Expect that your person may wake up in a pool of their own blood & take an extra shower. Don’t panic. This is normal.

There will be chunks. This is literally flesh lining getting ripped from your organs, almost like an ulcer. The chunks are typically darker red than the blood, even if the blood is in pools & pretty dark. It will likely feel like you’re peeing literally all the time.

Remember to check yourself every now & again. Go to the restroom you typically use & make sure you haven’t overflowed.

There may be stains on clothing. Expect this.

If you are a friend/family member/etc., LET YOUR PERSON KNOW if this happens. If you are the person experiencing this, ALWAYS BRING SPARE UNDERWEAR & SPARE PANTS. It can be incredibly embarrassing to sit in a pool of your own blood & have people notice there’s blood on your clothes.

If you are the person experiencing this, expect to feel weird. You’re literally sitting in a pool of your own blood & flesh. It’s warm, it’s gross, it’s got chunks in it, it’s sticky. It’s like swimming in honey, but only around your (already EXTREMELY sensitive) private area.

If you are the person handling this situation/trying to understand what it means, make sure to have CHEMICAL-FREE tampons, pads (normal & “overnight”, because some cycle days can be really frickin heavy) & liners on hand for a couple weeks. This could be a lifesaver for if your person forgot to bring spares & floods.

DON’T BE EMBARRASSED TO BUY PADS/TAMPONS. Be mature. There’s nothing wrong with being a good friend/family member.

If someone makes fun of you, tell them you’re glad your person entrusted you with something this important.

You wouldn’t want to be sitting in a pool of your own blood feeling like someone’s rubbing burning sandpaper on your privates. Don’t expect us to like it either. Get the pads/tampons without chemical additives.

ALSO. Ask your person what they want to do/have! Some people like tea or coffee, some like chocolate, some like ice cream, some like to snuggle & watch Netflix, some like to watch sappy movies & cry. This is NORMAL. Make sure your person gets what they ask for, because this will make them happier & help with (but not eliminate) the mood swings, so this makes the experience easier for both of you.

Think of it this way: if you had been stabbed in the nether regions & stomach & knew you would live through it but were bleeding a lot, you would want someone to take care of you. Seems reasonable, right? It feels like you’ve been stabbed by a jagged knife that’s still doing flips & twirls in your gut & nether regions. IT FRICKIN HURTS.

After the heavy days pass comes more “light days” or leaking. This usually lasts two days to a couple weeks. Continue to provide comfort, chocolate or your person’s preferred treats, & ask for suggestions!

They will (pretty well guaranteed) like you a lot more if you do this for them, especially once it’s over. They’ll have their energy back & feel much better about telling you things.

Once it’s over, it’s over. However...

IT FRICKIN COMES BACK. The estimated “one month” isn’t true for everyone, and that calculation is from DAY ONE TO DAY ONE. In other words, if your cycle is longer than a couple days (most are), you’re getting them around two to three weeks apart. This is normal.

Be concerned & maybe talk to a doctor if it’s over two months, UNLESS you’re taking male hormone supplements. Something may be wrong, or you may be pregnant. Once you’ve taken about a year of male hormone supplements, these SHOULD stop entirely, but it’s not guaranteed.

Also! If someone doubles over squealing/squeaking/seemingly in pain during this time, that’s cramping. It can be really frickin intense. Cuddle them. Get them their preferred medication (Cat’s Claw is a good herbal remedy if they don’t want prescription-grade meds)! This can help to reduce or temporarily eliminate cramping, once it kicks in (about half an hour later, & most last for about 6 hours).

That’s all. Female bodies do annoying things (even from a female perspective) to us. Be mature, be educated, & help out your people! :)

My Cats

So at my house, we are very animal friendly, and I am a big cat fan, as such we have 6 felines in our house hold!

This is Sawyer, he is a 1 1/2 year old maine coon, meaning he is still growing. He is troublesome and always gets into mischief, he is jumpy and will freeze if you say his name, and yes he did eat those flowers.

Next up is my baby girl, Delilah, she is around 2 now. She came into our lives after my previous therapy cat, Oliver, passed away my freshman year. She is the only female cat in the house, and she acts like a queen. Her job as a therapy cat is to stay with me and help with my anxiety, she is actually snuggled up beside me right now.

Here is the ‘ghost cat’ Patches, he was a feral cat at one of the previous houses, a farmhouse in Pennsylvania. He is super shy and hard to find, but he’s also super sweet and goofy. He is around 8

And of course we have the old man, This is Maximum von Sheffield, or Max for short, he is 17 and is assumed to have Alzheimer, his feet are messed up so he stomps everywhere and can’t retract his claws, he’s very caring and if you are sick, he will snuggle with you until you are better, only leaving to get food/water or to pee. He had an x-ray done and the vets found something strange on his liver. We are still waiting for results.

Out of all the cats, Pipen is the only one the who is the same size as your average cat. And in this house, that means he is the smallest of all the cats. So he has napoleon syndrome, which basically means he thinks he has to fight everyone to prove himself, including the 21 pound giant copper.

The orange fuzzball is Copper, he was snoozing next to my little brother when he was sick. Copper is 21 pounds and is the size of our golden retriever; which is massive! The funny thing is that Copper is a big coward who is scared of my sister’s rabbit, mittens.

And that is the cats! now I need to get pictures of the birds, goats, rabbit and dog! You can ask me or my characters anything you want! and requests are always open!

An animal is not a gift. Not a present. Not a reward for a good behaviour or good results at school. An animal is not something you not shall offer because your kids asked you for one for two weeks and you believe you are a good parent if you give what your little ones have begged for.

An animal shall be owed for good reasons. It’s an informed decision. It is not only affection, love and complicity. It is also a lot of responsabilities.

Most of all, an animal is not a toy.

But if you truly want to give that f**king dog your kid asked you for, at least please consider visiting an animal shelter. There is a lot of dogs and cats who deserve to meet good humans and get a better life. You may not need to feed the breeding industry. Don’t forget that if you take a puppy, you will have to deal with pees and poops anywhere for quite some time. Taking an older animal is being free of that uncool part. Plus education is done, you only have to share great moments. Older animals can also learn new things, new words, new games, new tricks.

I have got my dog Bobby from a breeder who didn’t want to keep him because he didn’t feel like doing his duty with females anymore. I assume Bobby would have ended up in a shelter if no one came for him and that’s the only reason that led me there. He lived in a giant cage that was in the middle of the living room. Not a single toy, no dog basket. When I got him home, I noticed he had never ever gone outside of his entire life (he was 5 years old !) He was scared to death when he felt the wind in his hair and the grass under his feet. When he was not even 11 he was diagnosed with a heart decease that caused water to enter his lungs. Medicine was expensive and didn’t save him longer than for 6 months. Getting a dog is being there for him whatever happens and above all it is being there for him till death do us part.
