i cannot stop thinking about the final scene with chani and how amazing it is as an adaptation of the final lines of the book

in the book, Jessica assures Chani that she will be remembered as the true wife of Paul Muad’dib and i have always loved this allusion to history which is super important and also the centering of Jessica and Chani as voices in Leto/Paul’s lives

but Villeneuve takes it to a whole other level by giving Chani the agency to get angry and LEAVE?? like not only is she the woman that history will remember, she is also the one thing in the entire universe that Paul can’t control.

i knew that Denis got it from the moment he did that interview about how the women of dune are the heart and soul of the story but MY GD DOES HE GET IT!!!!!!

the way the situation had unravelled surprised you just as much as it did to kai. it had been a normal day–no–it was a great day. the early stages of dating where every single moment felt exciting, exhilarating. the high came to a low just as the sun sets with you in kai’s arms; a warm blanket keeping you warm as his figure moulds against yours from the back.

it happened so naturally; so innocently. you merely rubbing along his arms banded by your waist, the slight tip of your chin over your shoulder and catching his gaze. fleeting eyes sweeping from eyes down to lips and back up. the alluring attraction that reels the pair of you in until both lips meet.

soft, plush, tender. the hustles of the city fade to nothing; muffled, like meaningless static. kai’s nervous chuckle as he pulls away, your giddy laughter to want more that he gives in. too quickly, too addictive, too soon but then again, perhaps not soon enough.

he leans in, meeting your lips halfway for another kiss. this time, it’s longer; more elaborate, firmer; hazing your mind with the way he’s careful with the nervousness lining his lips but eager; passionate.

you pull back first this time, and kai has this sight he’ll remember for a lifetime. the way your forehead rests upon his with a hushed chuckle, your eyes still shut as you submit to his embrace.

for a split second, you forget that you two were standing at one of the balconies at his workplace. it’s only when the door swings open with the sound of yeonjun’s voice calling out very loudly: “yah!” the sound of the door meets the wall, “you said you would be gone for like ten minutes and–”his face changes very quickly–”oh my god, did you–did you guys–am i–oh my god!”

yeonjun has one hand up to his mouth to cover the way his jaw hangs open, his other gripping onto the door handle like a lifeline. when soobin peers over yeonjun’s shoulder with a what the heck is going on? where’s huening? he’s able to piece together what happened when he sees the way you’re now hiding your face in kai’s neck and the latter is blushing rather than the glow of the sunset casted on his face.

“oh my god! huening got his first kiss!” soobin’s yelling, to the point where it echoes and yeonjun has to slap his hand over soobin’s mouth and drag him away, “dude, shut up!” yeonjun then gives kai one last look, “you better bring your ass back to practice! five minutes!”

when the door closes and you’re left with just the person who you thought you’d be with, you lift your head from kai’s neck to look at him. he’s now in a bright shade of pink, which is adorable and so pure at the same time.

“was that your first kiss?”

kai has the nerve to shake his head.

“nah, it was my first and second.”

you playfully shove him, rolling your eyes but he’s able to laugh it off as he pulls you back towards him with a cheeky smile.

“can i have a third one before i go?”

"i don’t know,” you snicker, your arms sneaking up around his neck, “can you?”

he smiles; the kind that nearly blinds you. his hands glide around your waist to pull you closer, as if you weren’t close enough to begin with, his nose lining yours as his lips brush over yours just lightly.

“yeah,” he murmurs, the tell-tales of an influx of kisses coming your way, “i think i can.”

Hello have you ever thought about how the Avatar of Wrath isn’t really all that angry? Because I have. At great length. (500ish word textpost essay about Satan’s character arc below)

From the beginning of the game, it’s obvious that Satan is the most in control of his sin. When he first appears in the story, it is almost unclear what his assigned flaw even is. He’s calm and collected. On a surface level, he seems to exhibit pride more often than wrath. This appearance of control, though, is a direct result of the self-loathing and inwardly-directed anger that is the true manifestation of his sin.

I think that the circumstance of Satan’s creation is the main reason for his self-loathing. Most of Satan’s big character moments are centered around overcoming negative feelings surrounding his creation, so I’d be remiss not to connect this thread.

Lucifer tore his wings from his back as an expression of overwhelming anger and those wings became Satan. To be created as a direct result of a traumatic event takes a toll. Not only was Satan born from Lucifer’s wrath, he was born from an act of self-mutilation, which thematically parallels Satan’s self-hatred. It’s clear that this connection was intentional.

Aside from his identity struggles from being born from Lucifer, Satan views himself as an artifact of the Celestial War and, by extension, Lilith’s death.

Truly, Satan is the silver lining of the Celestial War. He is the good that came from all of the bad. But, in himself, he can only see all of the bad. All of the pain that his existence causes for his brothers. He doesn’t think he is a good enough replacement for Lilith, he doesn’t think that he is a blessing enough to counterbalance the curse of losing their home. He can’t undo all of the pain and suffering that fell from the sky alongside him. He imagines his brothers feel this pain at the sight of him, so he resolves to make his existence less painful.

Satan minimizes his own pain, minimizes his flaw. He channels all of his energy into making himself worth the trouble. He does this, in part, by collecting knowledge. His penchant for reading has a twofold effect, here, it is a solitary activity (alone, he can’t be a bother to others) and it makes him indispensable.

While the other brothers' sins manifest externally, Satan’s sin manifests, for the most part, internally. This sets him apart from the others in terms of character development because the one-size-fits-most “learn to overcome my sin and become less selfish through the power of love” trajectory doesn’t suit his arc. In fact, his arc runs directly opposite.

Rather than learning to control himself and minimize his flaw, Satan must grow more comfortable with his own identity and learn to channel his wrath to positive effect. It does not benefit Satan to exhibit less wrath because he is already unaffected by his wrath for the most part.

While the other brothers' arcs guide them to minimize their sins and step outside of themselves to care for the others, Satan must let his sin be part of his unique identity. More importantly, he must learn to trust that his brothers (and MC) see the good in him enough to take up more space.

TLDR: let satan be angry sometimes, as a treat <3
