Discover Onzanji (Temple 18) and Explore Japan’s Cultural Heritage Through Stunning Media
🛕 Onzanji (恩山寺), the 18th temple on the renowned Shikoku Pilgrimage, is a spiritual retreat nestled in Tokushima Prefecture. Dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai (薬師如来), the Buddha of Medicine, this temple offers a serene and peaceful escape for both pilgrims and travelers. Surrounded by lush greenery and traditional Japanese architecture, Onzanji is a site that beautifully blends cultural, historical, and spiritual significance.
One of the symbols frequently seen at this temple is the manji (卍), a Buddhist icon representing peace, harmony, and the Buddha’s teachings. This symbol has been used for millennia in Asian cultures and is NOT to be confused with the Nazi swastika, which is reversed in direction and holds a vastly different meaning.

Kokubunji (国分寺) – Temple 59 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage
Kokubunji is Temple 59 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, located in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. This peaceful temple is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai (薬師如来), the Buddha of Healing. From above, you can see the temple’s beautiful layout, surrounded by traditional homes and quiet countryside.
One of the unique features here is the statue of Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), the founder of Shingon Buddhism. Pilgrims believe that shaking his hand brings good fortune on their journey. Of course, I had to try it myself! Standing before the temple’s wooden halls, Kūkai’s statue offers a moment of connection with the past.
This temple is part of the 88-temple pilgrimage, a route walked by thousands seeking spiritual growth and inner peace. Whether you’re a pilgrim or a traveler, Kokubunji’s quiet atmosphere and deep history make it worth a visit.

📿 Pilgrimage to Sekkeiji – Temple 33 of the Shikoku 88 Route 📿
Nestled in the heart of Kochi City, Sekkeiji (雪蹊寺) stands as the 33rd temple of the sacred Shikoku Pilgrimage (四国遍路). Devotees from across Japan and beyond walk this path in search of spiritual growth, reflection, and enlightenment.
At Sekkeiji, the Yakushi Nyorai (薬師如来), the Medicine Buddha, is enshrined, offering blessings of healing, protection, and wisdom. Whether you seek physical well-being or a deeper spiritual journey, the temple’s serene atmosphere and rich history provide solace to all.
Many Mahayana practitioners believe that walking the Shikoku Pilgrimage strengthens one’s karmic path, allowing for a connection with the teachings of Kūkai (空海, Kōbō Daishi), the revered founder of Shingon Buddhism.

I've been very interested in blind contouring lately. It's really fun because there isn't pressure to make it perfect. Here is a sketch I did of one of the famous 88 temples on my island. The 88 Temple Pilgrimage (八十八ヶ所巡り hachijūhakkasho-meguri) is Japan's most famous pilgrimage route, a 1200 km loop around the island of Shikoku.

Gabriel Begun: Ohenro Ambassador I have another site that is sadly neglected. It's called "Your Pilgrimage in Japan". I completed the 88 Buddhist Temple Pilgrimage a couple of years ago, but I did it over the course of a year and by tour bus.

This peaceful place is Maegamiji, temple 64 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It’s located in Saijō, a city in Ehime Prefecture on Japan’s Shikoku Island. Surrounded by mountains, it’s a calm spot tucked into the forest.
These photos show the temple from above and on foot. The aerial view highlights its hidden setting among the trees. On the ground, you can see the main hall, small worship buildings, and even a statue of Jizō Bosatsu—protector of travelers and children. The peaceful setting invites reflection and quiet walks.
Maegamiji’s main deity is Amida Nyorai, the Buddha of Infinite Light. The torii gate at the entrance blends Shinto and Buddhist tradition, marking sacred ground.
If you enjoy peaceful places like this, I share drone views of temples across Japan. See more here: https://linktr.ee/shikoku4k

Butsumokuji (佛木寺) sits quietly in Uwajima, Ehime, welcoming pilgrims along the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. This sacred place is dedicated to Dainichi Nyorai (大日如来), the cosmic Buddha of boundless wisdom.
These images capture the temple’s serene atmosphere. The intricate wooden carvings and traditional tiled roofs stand against lush greenery, embodying the harmony of Buddhist architecture. A Jizō statue, adorned with offerings, watches over the site. Jizō (地蔵) is a guardian of children and travelers, often seen with bibs and toys left by visitors praying for protection.
Butsumokuji is a peaceful stop for those seeking reflection. If you love Japan’s temple culture, check out more of my work here: Linktree.
