Kokubunji (国分寺) – Temple 59 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage
Kokubunji is Temple 59 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, located in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. This peaceful temple is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai (薬師如来), the Buddha of Healing. From above, you can see the temple’s beautiful layout, surrounded by traditional homes and quiet countryside.
One of the unique features here is the statue of Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), the founder of Shingon Buddhism. Pilgrims believe that shaking his hand brings good fortune on their journey. Of course, I had to try it myself! Standing before the temple’s wooden halls, Kūkai’s statue offers a moment of connection with the past.
This temple is part of the 88-temple pilgrimage, a route walked by thousands seeking spiritual growth and inner peace. Whether you’re a pilgrim or a traveler, Kokubunji’s quiet atmosphere and deep history make it worth a visit.

Hidden deep in the mountains of Ehime Prefecture, Iwayaji (岩屋寺) is the 45th temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Nestled against sheer rock cliffs at over 600 meters in altitude, it’s one of the most breathtaking and challenging stops for pilgrims.
These images capture Iwayaji in autumn, where fiery red and golden maple leaves frame the temple’s wooden halls and steep mountain paths. The contrast between the ancient architecture and the raw, natural cliffs is stunning. The priest’s quarters, built into the rock face, blend seamlessly with the rugged landscape.
At the temple entrance, visitors pass a statue of Kukai (空海), the revered Buddhist monk who founded the pilgrimage. Further inside, rows of stone statues of Buddhist deities line the mossy trails, adding to the sacred, timeless atmosphere.
Reaching Iwayaji is a journey in itself, but the serene beauty at the top is worth every step. Want more glimpses of Japan’s spiritual and natural wonders? See more at [Linktree]: https://linktr.ee/shikoku4k.

Negoroji (根香寺) is temple 82 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It’s located deep in the hills of Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. The principal image (deity) of this temple is Senju Kannon (千手観世音菩薩), the Bodhisattva of Compassion with a thousand hands.
I visited this temple back in 2007 with a Nikon D80, but strangely almost all the photos I took turned out poorly—blurry, dark, or just off. These two are the only shots I’d even consider sharing. It’s humbling to realize that my current iPhone 14 Pro Max now produces better results than a DSLR I once treasured. Cameras have come a long way.
These images show part of the forested temple grounds with traditional wooden structures set against rich greenery. Even in these less-than-ideal images, there’s a mystique to the moss-covered path and stone guardians that mark this sacred place.
