INXS - Original Sin (Official Music Video) - 1983
"Original Sin", originally titled "Brand New Day", is the first single from "The Swing" album. This was the band's first #1 Single in Australia. During 1984, it was #1 in Australia (for two weeks in January) as well as in Argentina and France.
‘Original Sin' is one of INXS' most enduring hits. It was their first Australian number one and helped them make inroads into markets around the world they would soon dominate.
The legendary Daryl Hall appears on the song's chorus, though Hall has since said he has no idea why.
“Nile Rodgers is a friend of mine. He was working on the record and he asked me to come down to the studio because they wanted me to sing on it for some reason,” he told Donnie Sutherland on Sounds in 1984. “I don't know why, they're good singers. They didn't need me. But I did it anyway.”
What the artist said:
“INXS just about lost their minds when they saw that Nile Rodgers was backstage at one of their shows in Canada. The band were fans of Chic and his productions and had tried to get the word out that they were keen to work with him on their next album.
“We gave him a copy of the ‘Original Sin' demo, and the next minute we found ourselves rehearsing in Florida, then going into The Power Station in New York City, literally just after David Bowie and his band had left the studio,” Andrew Farriss told FasterLouder in 2014.
“We walked straight in and the best part was the engineer who had worked on a lot of those albums with Nile, Jason Casaro, was there too.
“When I listen to ‘Original Sin' and compare it to other recordings, geez that sounds good. At the time there was this cutting edge of people who were really good at what they were doing, and two of them were sitting in that room.”
What Nile Rodgers said:
Rodgers not only affected the music, but he had a big say in the lyrics for the song's iconic chorus too.
“The original lyrics were, 'Dream on white boy, dream on white girl,' Rodgers told AdelaideNow in 2012. “I said, 'Why not make it 'black boy, white girl?' I come from an inter-racial couple. Psychologically that makes it a bigger statement.'
“Even when I rang up Daryl Hall from Hall and Oates to sing on it, his manager thought it was too controversial. I think the record would have been bigger had I not talked them into changing the lyrics.”
What the press said:
In a glowing review of the song for AllMusic, Ned Raggett particularly outlined the influence of Rodgers' production as a high point of the record.
“It's the monstrous groove and punch of the song that counts first and foremost,” he wrote. “With its stuttering drum breaks, the dark chime of the lead synth line matched by droning guitar, Kirk Pengilly's brisk sax, and the relentless, straight-up rhythm driving everything along.”

when we wonder how political shows wíll get, folks tend to think along the lines of, like, are they gonna tackle freedom of the press? defamation laws? equal marriage? corruption? gender equality? and then here's only friends ep 1, and Cheuam comes in with this absolutely sick burn--
pm 2.5? yeah, air pollution, it was really bad this year, people sued the then-PM over it.
covid? We know. We know. (killed ~35000 people in Thailand directly according to WHO stats and ruined millions of lives because of the economic dip due to the tourism slump, and fuck knows how many more severely impaired by long covid or other covid-related issues)
But radioactive cesium?? surely … oh.
have some international headlines:
nyt - bloomberg - abc.net.au - cnn.com
and here's the whole sordid saga in Bangkok Post Headlines
Radioactive caesium missing from power plant (2023-03-14) Missing radioactive tube sparks concern (2023-03-15) Search yields no sign of radioactive hazard tube (2023-03-16) No tube in truck, guard tells cops (2023-03-19) Steel melting plant closed, hazardous isotope detected (2023-03-20) Caesium-contaminated factory dust now safely contained (2023-03-20) Toxic dust contained at steel plant (2023-03-21) Caesium concerns remain, says Greenpeace (2023-03-21) Prayut says no risk from furnace dust (2023-03-22) Radiation 'poses no threat' to local food produce (2023-03-23) Prachin Buri people demand probe into caesium disappearance (2023-03-23) Sick kids prompt 'urgent' tube probe (2023-03-25) Locals urge action over caesium saga (2023-03-28) Lack of plan for radioactive dust worries experts (2023-04-05)
so I think if we want to speculate just how political Jojo's gonna get with this? the answer is "yes, and"

Abc.net.au reports: Other adverse reactions included “the death of one animal” and reports of pain, vomiting and diarrhoea in seven others, according to a recall notice published on the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) website.
It said the animal that died had “experienced a suspected anaphylactic reaction soon after vaccine administration and died approximately five hours later, despite treatment”.
The voluntary recall comes in the wake of an ongoing national shortage of the leptospirosis vaccine, which started late last year.
Dr Brightman said the recall is another disappointing setback.
“We’ve had months and months of delays with re-getting it out to market, and then we just started receiving initial stock last week,” he said.
“We just want to make sure that we’ve got a safe, effective vaccine back available to pet owners as soon as possible.”
The adverse reactions have been linked to batch number BN23-126, which was sold to clinics across Queensland and the Northern Territory, as well as the Australian Border Force, between November 6 and 8.
The recall will also extend to three other batches of the vaccine: BN23-131, BN23-132 and BN23-133.
Veterinarians have been urged to contact Treidlia Biovet to arrange the return of unopened and partially used vials.
Treidlia Biovet, which manufactures the vaccine and initiated the voluntary recall, has been contacted by the ABC for comment.

Richard Mockler abc.net.au
When Malcolm marched in 1988, attitudes were different.
Homosexuality was far less accepted than it is today, the HIV epidemic was raging and an apology to Indigenous Australians from a prime minister was 20 years away.
Sydney was busy preparing its bicentenary celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the First Fleet arriving at Botany Bay.
On January 26, 11 tall ships arrived in Sydney after retracing the original convict voyage from the United Kingdom. Performances of British expeditions were staged in period costumes across the city.
Prince Charles addressed the nation on the steps of the Sydney Opera House.
While that was happening thousands of Indigenous people travelled to Sydney to protest the celebrations, and Malcolm was brainstorming ideas for a float.
Panos Couros was a young gay man who took part in the protest and later met Malcolm at a Mardi Gras workshop.
Together they came up with the concept for the float.
On a tall ship, pulled by a group of white people, Malcolm would dress as Captain Cook, the British explorer who claimed New South Wales for the British Crown in 1770.
Narungga and Kaurna man Rodney Junga-Williams would dress as Sir Joseph Banks, a botanist who arrived in Australia with Captain Cook and who was key in justifying the legal dispossession of First Nations people from their land.
Panos stepped back from marching with the float and filmed the moment.

media list (26.02.2024 - 26.03.3024)
👂 Listened:
Albums:
Speak Now (Taylor's Version) by Taylor Swift (2023) [8/10, probably my favourite of her re-releases, Timeless and Electric Touch are amazing vault songs.]
Red (Taylor's Version) by Taylor Swift (2021) [7/10, I don't really love any of the vault songs in this except for the 10 minute version of All Too Well, and while I like the tune and vibe of I Bet You Think About Me, I find it lyrically awkward.]
D-Day by Agust D (2023) [5/10, musically I just don't vibe with Yoongi's solo stuff a lot of the time, so it always ends up being a very distant appreciation, and I'll be honest and say I probably wouldn't listen if I wasn't already a fan.]
Indigo by RM (2022) [8.5/10, really really solid album, though it couldn't quite overtake mono. for me in terms of how much I loved it - considering if I were to rate mono. it would absolutely be a 10/10.]
Podcasts:
Morbid Episodes: ⤷ EP 502: The Highgate Vampire ⤷ EP 503: The Torsaker Witch Trials ⤷ EP 541: The Unsolved Murder of Georgette Bauerdorf
📖 Read:

Too close for comfort: Aussie filmmaker’s accidental portrait of a psychopath by Karl Quinn from Sydney Morning Herald [As made obvious by this list, I do tend to watch something then immediately seek out more information - a lot of the time it just leads me to reddit threads, but other times I do find articles and read those.]
The Bible Says Jesus Was Real. What Other Proof Exists? by Christopher Klein from history.com
What is the historical evidence that Jesus Christ lived and died? by Dr. Simon Gathercole from Guardian [I was dragged to church by my other and it hit me that I'd never even tried to find proof on whether or not Jesus wasn't fiction, so I started reading what people had to say. tldr; no archeological proof, though people of Jesus' class at the time didn't tend to leave archeological proof of their existence, and it seems there are accounts of Jesus starting 30 years after his death from non-Christians, so. Probably a real guy. Whether or not he's actually the son of God is, of course, unable to be proven.]
Books:
Stalking Darkness by Lynn Flewelling [finished! Another 10/10.]
Pine by Francine Toon [dropped - couldn't continue this one anymore, it's slow and filled with details that had nothing to do with the actual mystery or the characters themselves - I think other people might have appreciated it for the way it allowed you to visualise the setting so vividly, but to me it was just incredibly boring.]
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen [in progress, told myself I'd read more classics and thought I'd start with one I was supposed to read in high school.]
Spy x Family vol. 1 [finished! 10/10. Immediately bought the 10 volumes out on Amazon after reading this because I enjoyed it so much. Loid Forger is a goldmine of a male character, the kind that's easy to fall for and to root for. Anya is sweet and funny and interesting, and Yor is just the icing on the cake of their dynamic.]
Spy x Family vol. 2 [finished! 10/10 - my goodreads rating system is going to be SKEWED after reading this manga.]
Spy x Family vol. 3 [finished! 8/10 mostly because I didn't love Yor's brother at all.]
📺 Watched:
Movies:
Dune: Part Two [8/10 - this really revitalised my love of going to the cinema! I've watched it twice, and I've made plans to see some other movies in theatre and it's really all because this was such an experience to see on the big screen. Highly recommend.]
YouTube:
The Deranged Arsonist Who Filmed Their Own Crime • Mystery Files from Watcher
The Perplexing Legend of Vermont's Sea Monster • Mystery Files from Watcher
True Crime Cases with Disturbing CCTV Evidence from Lazy Masquerade
Documentaries:
Our Planet II [This was gorgeous and informative and also eye-opening in how it shows you the direct impact of human carelessness on so many creatures, to the albatrosses choking on plastic and the walruses unable to find ice to leave its baby. At the same time, there's hope! There's humans helping crabs cross roads, and bridges being built for animals who've used the same paths for hundreds and possibly thousands of years.]
Life In Colour with David Attenborough
Worst Roommate Ever EP 1-2: [the first episode one was WILD, especially because I had no idea this was a true crime when I clicked on it, and so did not expect it was going to involve several dead bodies buried in a little old lady's backyard. I do feel like this was such an intriguing case that I had a hard time finishing the second episode, since it feels so much more ... dull in comparison, as terrible as that is to say about murders.]
David Farrier's Mister Organ [I'm a long-time fan of David Farrier, but didn't get a chance to watch this for a while. This one is a dark, dark tale that has nothing to do with murders. It's all psychological. I'm always amazed with how well Farrier can explore the darkness of humans without turning to the usual things we think of when we think of 'bad' people. I'd also recommend reading this article - which I'll also read on my read articles list - after watching this documentary, just so you know how insidious Michael Organ truly is.]
Into The Deep: The Submarine Murder Case [I don't give the things I watch ratings, but if I did, this would be a 10/10 - it's a unique experience to be able to see footage of how the people close to a murderer react as they realise the kind of person their friend is.]

it should be noted that abc.net.au (australian news agency, funded but not owned by the aus government) has the full speech uploaded and uncensored in their articles on it
what do you mean elon musk did a nazi salute on live tv at the united states presidential inauguration twice and is now erasing the evidence off the internet by replacing the footage with the crowd cheering instead?
would be a shame if people reblogged this, wouldn’t it?

Week 6: What is Digital Citizenship? Hashtag Publics, Political Engagement and Activism

Hey again!
It’s the second post of this blog, and after diving into fandom and reality TV last week, we’re shifting gears a little but not too far off. This week we’re going to explore digital citizenship, and honestly, it really got me thinking about how we show up as citizens, not just in real life, but online. We hear so much about “digital citizenship” but what does it actually mean?
At its core, digital citizenship is about how we behave and participate in online spaces. It’s not just about avoiding scams or protecting your privacy, it’s also about being aware, responsible, and active in digital communities (Ribble 2011). A big part of that includes how we engage with political and social issues through social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

That’s where hashtag publics come in. According to Bruns and Burgess (2015), these are temporary communities formed around a shared hashtag. Unlike traditional publics that gather in physical spaces, hashtag publics form quickly, often in response to breaking news or rising social issues. And even though they’re temporary, they can be incredibly powerful like creating awareness, pressuring leaders, and building solidarity.
This ties closely to political engagement, where people use social media not just for self-expression but to join conversations, challenge injustice, and demand change. It’s activism that lives and breathes online.

A great example of all this in action is the #MilkTeaAlliance. It started in 2020, when Thai Twitter users defended a Thai celebrity who was attacked by Chinese nationalists online. But what started as a small clash over freedom of speech quickly grew into a powerful transnational movement. Activists and citizens from Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and later Myanmar, came together under the #MilkTeaAlliance banner to support democracy and push back against authoritarianism.
What makes this movement so unique is how it crossed borders. People from different countries, each with their own political struggles, found common ground in their shared love for milk tea, a cultural symbol and their shared desire for freedom. The hashtag became a space for protest art, videos of demonstrations, infographics explaining political situations, and powerful messages of unity. It wasn’t just trending, it was connecting people across Asia.
How the Milk Tea Alliance Is Brewing Solidarity Among Activists in Asia and Beyond
And this wasn’t just “slacktivism.” The hashtag helped shine global attention on pro-democracy movements, especially in Hong Kong and Myanmar, where traditional media often failed to capture the full story. The alliance turned Twitter into a global protest square, accessible to anyone with a phone and Wi-Fi. People weren’t just speaking out; they were creating a collective identity as digital citizens pushing for regional change.
The #MilkTeaAlliance shows us that political engagement today doesn’t always require a protest sign or a speech. Sometimes, it’s a tweet, a shared post, or a digital artwork that starts the wave. Being a digital citizen means knowing how to use these platforms not just to scroll but to stand up.
The Milk Tea Alliance now has an emoji on Twitter.
