It took me a week to watch this movie and it wasn’t because it’s a 3-hour long commitment. One of the first Terrence Malick movies that I’ve seen, A Hidden Life is like a beautiful book, a journey so poetic that you have to stop after every page to take it all in. 

I do not wish to waste my words on the whats and whos of the film because the essence of this story was not the events but the intention behind them. 

It prompted a question that one must ask oneself: what is a man without his values? 

This story is about a man who sacrifices everything to stand up for what he believes in, it’s an act of resistance against the evil (up for debate, sure) side of man.

Almost every dialogue required further philosophical meditations and told stories that went beyond the apparent. As I was watching the movie, I paused after every minute to write.  And I cannot stress enough how beautifully this movie has been shot. Wide-angles in natural light, it is all-encompassing, moving, breathtaking, honest, and intentionally uneasy sometimes.  Looking forward to watching this again after a few years.

I did not know the story of Franz Jägerstätter. He was a man who when faced with the evil of Hitler said “No” when everyone around him was saying “Yes”. What courage. This film is thought provoking, beautiful shot, and deeply sad. August Diehl was truly powerful in his performance. Thank you Terrence Malick for bringing this story to our attention.

I don’t usually make film recommendations . . . But after seeing A Hidden Life, I could not NOT do it. This is the best movie I have seen in so very long. It is perfect. The cinematography is sublime, breathtaking in the vast beauty of a village tucked above the clouds in the mountains of Austria. There are simple, solitary moments when the camera hesitates on tender scene after tender scene…cinematic still life that crack open your heart & emotions. Terrence Malick’s directorial genius is evident with the same gritty beauty as in At Heaven’s Gate. He is a thinker & the real-life protagonist of this film seem to beat with the same heart, the same love, the same courage, the same respect for life & with a quiet heroism. This film rocked me to my core in so many ways. The acting is incredible, as if the actors channeled the characters, who lived on real life. This is a true story. One our world should see. Maybe that one act could change the world. Hidden with and in the people these deeds are about. For most men this means that our manliness will be fashioned and exercised primarily by what we do for and with the persons of our household. Starting with our wife. This does not minimize our profession and work outside the home; rather, it gives it proper direction and focus.
