Written communication, while essential in many aspects of life, comes with a set of disadvantages that can pose challenges, especially for students in Class 9. Understanding these limitations is crucial for improving overall communication skills. Mugafi, a leading name in educational tools and resources, aims to shed light on these drawbacks to help students become more effective communicators.
Lack of Immediate Feedback
One significant disadvantage of written communication is the lack of immediate feedback. Unlike verbal communication, where responses are instantaneous, written communication often involves delays. This can lead to misunderstandings and prolonged discussions. For Class 9 students, this can be particularly frustrating when seeking clarifications on assignments or when collaborating on group projects.
Misinterpretation of Tone
Another common issue with written communication is the potential for misinterpreting the tone. Without vocal cues and body language, the reader may misread the intent or emotion behind the words. This can lead to unnecessary conflicts or confusion. Mugafi emphasizes the importance of clarity and careful word choice to minimize such misunderstandings.
Time-Consuming
Crafting effective written communication can be time-consuming. Drafting, revising, and editing require significant effort and time. For Class 9 students, balancing these tasks with other academic responsibilities can be overwhelming. Mugafi recommends developing good time management skills and leveraging technology, like grammar and style check tools, to streamline the writing process.
Limited Interaction
Written communication often lacks the interactive element that face-to-face or verbal communication offers. This can make it difficult to build relationships and engage in meaningful exchanges. For students, this limitation can affect group dynamics and collaborative learning experiences. Mugafi encourages incorporating interactive elements, like discussion forums or live chats, to enhance written communication.
Permanent Record
While having a permanent record of communication can be advantageous, it can also be a drawback. Mistakes or inappropriate comments made in writing are documented and can be referenced later, sometimes leading to long-term consequences. Mugafi advises students to be mindful of their language and to review their written communication carefully before sending.
Technical Issues
Reliance on technology for written communication introduces the risk of technical issues. Problems like internet connectivity failures, software glitches, or hardware malfunctions can hinder communication efforts. For Class 9 students, these issues can disrupt the flow of submitting assignments or participating in online discussions. Mugafi suggests having backup plans and ensuring regular maintenance of digital devices to mitigate these risks.
Overemphasis on Formality
Written communication often demands a certain level of formality, which can be a barrier for students who are more comfortable with informal speech. This can stifle creativity and make communication feel rigid and impersonal. Mugafi recommends striking a balance between formality and personal voice to maintain engagement and authenticity.
In conclusion, while written communication is an invaluable skill, it is not without its disadvantages. By understanding and addressing these drawbacks, Class 9 students can enhance their communication abilities. Mugafi remains dedicated to providing resources and tools to support students in overcoming these challenges and achieving academic success.

10 Best AI Pre-Production Tools for Filmmakers
LTX Studio is a holistic AI-powered filmmaking platform designed to take you from idea to storyboard to final edit in one tool. It’s especially powerful for pre-production: you can feed in a script or concept and LTX will automatically generate a detailed visual storyboard with AI-created images and even video previews. This gives directors and producers a way to visualize scenes early, experiment with camera angles, and refine the story before shooting a single frame.
The platform runs in the cloud (web-based), supporting collaboration so that your team can co-create and iterate on the project together.
Beyond storyboards, LTX Studio provides tools for editing and post, making it a one-stop-shop. For pre-production, its standout feature is the AI storyboard generator and image generator – you can describe a scene in text and it will create concept art or storyboard frames in your chosen style.
Pros and Cons
Covers ideation, storyboarding, and even editing in one place.
Transforms scripts into storyboards automatically, saving tons of time.
You can tweak art style, mood, characters – not just generic output.
A broad feature set means it can be complex for newcomers to learn all tools.
Being cloud-based, it needs a stable connection to use all features.
Who this is for: LTX Studio is ideal for filmmakers who want one integrated AI solution for pre-production.

Filmustage is an AI-powered pre-production assistant that tackles the mundane parts of planning a film. It excels at script breakdown and scheduling – tasks typically done by assistant directors or production managers over days can now happen in minutes.
Using natural language processing (NLP), Filmustage automatically scans your screenplay and identifies key elements like characters, props, locations, and VFX requirements. This breakdown is the foundation for all your planning documents.
Once the script elements are tagged, Filmustage helps generate shooting schedules (it offers a digital stripboard) and even call sheets. It uses AI to sort scenes by optimal shooting order, suggest scheduling tweaks, and can auto-generate a synopsis or script analysis highlighting potential risks.
Pros and Cons
Turns a script into a list of scenes, cast, props, etc., in seconds.
Auto-generates a shooting schedule with scene order suggestions, saving days of coordination.
Includes call sheet generator, VFX breakdowns, budgeting aids, and more in one platform.
Runs in the browser; offline use isn’t possible, which can be limiting on set or without internet.
Lower-tier plans cap the number of projects you can run with AI per month.
The breakdown isn’t 100% perfect – you’ll still need to review and correct occasional tagging mistakes.
Who this is for: Filmustage is a practical tool for producers, 1st ADs, and production managers.

Boords is a popular online storyboarding software that now features an AI Storyboard Generator. It’s designed for directors, editors, or anyone planning a video who may not have strong drawing skills.
With Boords, you can input a script or description of a scene, and the AI will create a sequence of storyboard panels complete with images and captions. This means in a few seconds, you get a rough visual outline of your story rather than starting from a blank page.
One standout Boords feature is its Character Guidelines tool, which solves a common problem with AI image generation: keeping characters consistent across multiple shots. You can define a character’s look once, and Boords’ AI will make sure the same character appears in every frame (rather than changing appearance each time).
Pros and Cons
Generates storyboard panels from simple text prompts or script input, no drawing needed.
Unique AI feature to maintain the same character designs across all frames.
Supports teamwork, versioning, and exports to PDFs or MP4 animatics for easy sharing.
The auto-generated art, while clear, has a certain style (e.g. simple drawings); complex art styles might require additional tweaking.
To get the best images, you may need to refine text prompts – there’s a bit of trial and error involved.
Full capabilities require a paid plan; the free version is limited in the number of frames/projects.
Who this is for: Boords is good for filmmakers who want to visualize their script quickly or put together a storyboard for a pitch.
Pricing (USD)
Lite – $19/month
Standard – $49/month
Workflow – $99/month

Midjourney is a top AI image generator known for its incredible ability to create detailed, imaginative visuals from text prompts. While not built specifically for filmmakers, it has become a go-to tool for many in the industry to produce concept art, mood boards, and design ideas during pre-production.
With Midjourney, you can describe a setting (“a futuristic cityscape at sunset” or “medieval castle interior with candlelight”) and it will render a high-quality image that matches that description. This is invaluable for production designers and directors who want to explore the look and feel of their film’s world.
For example, you might generate concept art for a location to guide your location scouting, or create character portraits to inspire costume and makeup design. Midjourney’s outputs tend to be very polished – often comparable to professional concept art – and can spark new ideas you hadn’t considered.
Pros and Cons
Produces stunning, detailed images that can pass for real concept art or location photos.
Great for brainstorming visuals – it often adds artistic details that can inspire your creative direction.
You can request styles (photorealistic, cartoon, noir, etc.) to match the aesthetic of your project.
Midjourney is a general AI, so it won’t break down a script or know your shot list – it purely generates images.
Crafting the right text prompt is key; expect to iterate descriptions to get the perfect image.
There’s no unlimited free use – after a trial, it requires a subscription and the cost can increase if you need a lot of images.
Who this is for: Midjourney is an excellent tool for directors, production designers, and art departments looking to quickly produce concept imagery.
Pricing (USD)
Basic – $10/month
Standard – $30/month
Pro Plan – $60/month
Mega Plan – $120/month

ChatGPT is a well-known AI language model, and it can be a powerful writing assistant for filmmakers during pre-production. While it’s not a specialized film tool, many creators use ChatGPT to help with tasks like story development, scriptwriting, and research.
For instance, you can brainstorm plot ideas or “what if” scenarios with ChatGPT – it can generate possible storylines or suggest how a character might react in a given situation. Some screenwriters use it to overcome writer’s block: you can have ChatGPT draft a scene or propose dialogue, then you refine it in your own voice.
Additionally, ChatGPT can analyze and summarize material. You could paste a synopsis of your story and ask for feedback or ask the AI to find any plot holes or unclear points (it provides a kind of pseudo-“coverage”). For factual research or ideas (like “list some unique consequences of time travel I could explore in a script”), ChatGPT is like an intelligent advisor.
Pros and Cons
Great for brainstorming themes, plot points, title ideas, and more – the AI can produce many options for you to consider.
Can draft scenes or dialogues in screenplay style if prompted, giving you a rough material to build on.
Helps with quick research (historical context, scientific concepts for sci-fi, etc.) and summarizing lengthy text.
The output may be generic or need significant editing – it’s not going to produce final-quality script pages on its own.
It doesn’t truly understand emotion or subtext as a human writer does, so creative judgment is still on you.
Over-reliance can make your work feel formulaic; best used as a supplement, not a replacement for human creativity.
Who this is for: For filmmakers who might not have a co-writer or writing room, ChatGPT offers a sounding board for ideas and a quick way to hash out written materials.

Pro – $200/month

Studiovity is an all-in-one film pre-production software that combines screenwriting, storyboarding, scheduling, and more – and it bakes in AI to assist you along the way. In Studiovity, you can write your screenplay (it has a modern script editor with index cards and beat boards), then use the AI Script Breakdown feature to automatically identify elements in your script (characters, props, locations, etc.)
After breakdown, Studiovity helps you create storyboards and shot lists (you can sketch or attach images, and manage shot specs), generate shooting schedules and calendars, and even make call sheets.
The AI comes into play with what they call “Magic Scheduling” – essentially using the breakdown data to draft a shooting schedule for you – and refining dialogue or translating scripts instantly.
Pros and Cons
Handles writing, planning, and team collaboration all in one app – no need to juggle multiple software.
Automates tedious breakdown tasks and suggests a shoot schedule, saving you time in pre-pro.
Available on web, Android, iOS – your script and plans are always accessible and up to date across devices.
Because it does so much, it can take a while to learn all features (though the interface is modern, as noted).
Studiovity is relatively new; it may not be as polished in each feature as dedicated single-purpose tools.
The AI features (breakdown, etc.) need internet and their server processing – offline, you’d be limited to the manual use of the app.
Who this is for: Studiovity is best suited for low-budget and indie filmmakers or student filmmakers who will benefit from an integrated pre-production hub.
Pricing (USD)
Screenplay Writing – $2.50/month
Video Pre-Production – $24/month
Enterprise – Custom

Adobe Firefly is Adobe’s suite of generative AI tools, now integrated into Creative Cloud apps like Photoshop. For filmmakers in pre-production, Firefly’s Generative Fill and text-to-image features can be extremely handy in the art department and storyboarding phase.
If you have a location photo or a concept image, you can use Generative Fill (in Photoshop Beta) to add or remove elements with a simple prompt. For example, you could take a photo of a street and ask Firefly to “add futuristic neon signs” or “change to nighttime with rain.” The AI will manipulate the image to match, providing a quick concept of set alterations or different mood lighting.
Firefly can also generate images from scratch based on prompts, similar to Midjourney (though focused on more commercially safe outputs). Within Illustrator or Photoshop, you might generate concept art for a prop or a logo for a fictional company in your film.
The advantage of Firefly for filmmakers is that it’s built into the tools designers already use, and outputs come in as editable layers.
Pros and Cons
Generative Fill lets you extend or modify images directly in Photoshop with natural results.
Quickly try out different set designs, costume variations, or lighting conditions without elaborate manual painting.
If you already subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud, Firefly features are included, so no extra subscription.
It’s a general creative tool – doesn’t do scripts, schedules, etc. It strictly helps with visuals.
You need Photoshop Beta (or future versions) to use Generative Fill effectively. If you’re not familiar with Adobe tools, there’s a learning curve.
Some desired functions might still be in beta and not 100% perfect on every attempt.
Who this is for: Adobe Firefly is a boon for production designers, directors, and storyboard artists who want to play with visual ideas swiftly.
Pricing (USD)
Standard – $9.99/month
Firefly Pro – $29.99 month
Firefly Premium – $199.99/month
Pricing for students, teachers, and teams exists.

Largo.ai is quite different from the other tools on this list – instead of creating content, it analyzes and predicts. Aimed at producers and filmmakers making high-level decisions, Largo.ai is an AI-driven analytics platform for film development. You feed it your screenplay (or synopsis, or even a rough cut of the film), and Largo’s algorithms will evaluate elements like genre, theme, emotion arcs, and compare them with a vast database of film data.
The platform then provides predictions on audience appeal, distribution potential, and even casting choices that could boost the film’s success.
Key features include Emotional Intensity Analysis – Largo charts the emotional beats of your story (joy, sadness, fear, etc.) across the script to see if it aligns with successful patterns or if there are lulls. It also can do casting analysis: for example, you can query which actor’s presence might increase a film’s box office potential for a given genre, or see if your casting choices align with what attracts the target audience.
Pros and Cons
Offers an objective look at your script’s strengths and weaknesses (e.g., pacing of emotions) that you might overlook.
Can suggest what audience demographic your project skews towards and how to enhance appeal (like recommending a certain actor known to attract that demo).
By seeing comparative analysis with past successful films, you can make informed decisions (especially useful when pitching to investors or studios with concrete numbers).
Largo.ai won’t make your movie better artistically – in fact, purely following its suggestions could homogenize creativity (so use with balance).
It’s a high-end tool, likely priced for production companies; solo creators might find it expensive (often structured as yearly licenses or per-project fees).
The predictions are more accurate if you have a fairly developed script or film cut. In very early concept stages, it’s less useful.
Who this is for: Largo.ai is best suited for producers, executive producers, or directors who are looking to gauge the commercial viability of their project.
Pricing (USD)
Yearly Licensing Fee – $12,000

One click to generate elements lists, saving hours of manual tagging.
Plot-hole detection and audience forecasts give data-driven insight before you pitch.
Requires an internet connection; no desktop-offline mode yet.
Suggestions can miss nuance, so human rewriting is still essential.
Advanced analytics and unlimited projects sit in paid tiers.
Who this is for: It’s ideal for writer-directors and indie producers who crave AI speed without sacrificing collaboration.

How to Choose the Right AI Pre-Production Tool
With so many AI tools now in the filmmaker’s toolbox, choosing the right ones comes down to your specific needs and the scope of your project. Here are a few practical tips to guide your selection:
Identify Your Pre-Production Pain Points: Start by pinpointing which tasks eat up the most time or which skills you lack. If you’re a writer-director who can’t draw, an AI storyboarding tool (like Boords or LTX Studio) will be transformative. If you have trouble with scheduling and organization, a breakdown/scheduling AI (Filmustage or Studiovity) could be your best friend.
Consider Your Budget and Scale: Some AI tools are free or have free tiers, while others are premium. An indie short film team might get by entirely on free versions and trials, whereas a feature film in development may justify investing in a tool.
Assess Ease of Integration: You’ll want tools that play nicely with your existing workflow. If your team already uses Photoshop heavily, Adobe Firefly is a natural add-on.
Balance AI with Human Touch: Finally, remember these tools are assistants, not magicians. Use them to augment your skills, not replace them. A good rule of thumb is: if the AI saves you 50% of the time on a task, use that extra time to refine and add personal creativity to the output.
By evaluating your needs and testing options, you’ll assemble a suite of AI tools that effectively becomes your virtual production team in pre-production – doing the heavy lifting of drudge work and allowing you to focus on the creative heart of your project.
FAQ (AI Pre-Production Tools)
1. How can AI improve the accuracy of film budgets?
AI analyzes historical cost data and real-time quotes to forecast line-item expenses with tighter variance.
2. What are the main challenges of using AI in film pre-production

Application to School SOS 21
Tumblr media
I applied to this Critical Designers/Artist course. https://www.schoolsos.xyz/
You only had to reply to four questions to apply. Here is what I wrote:
Please select three reference images (not your own work) which looks at issues or themes relevant to yourself and our contemporary society that you may wish to explore during the course. Please supplement each image with a short 100 word description below.:
1.“Autoprogettazione” by Enzo Mari (1974). A book of furniture designs that can be built by anybody anywhere, without specialist skills or tools, out of cheap materials, and without a language barrier. The idea behind this work was a democratisation of design, a counter-proposal to capitalism and mass consumption, where every person can make their own furniture as and when needed. In 2016 Mari granted the refugee support organisation CUCULA the rights to use and develop these designs, allowing for them to continue to address current problems and to yield solutions for the future, such as sustainability, social responsibility and integration. It shows that the world could work differently and follow different systems to achieve empowerment and equalisation of people across classes.
2.Jenny Holzer's Inflammatory Essays (1979–82). A collection of 31 lithographs on colourful paper that show a 100-word essay. The themes range from civil unrest and disquiet to social attacks at (typically) the upper class and capitalist system. Holzer anonymously posted these prints all over New York in 1980. Not only is their content still very relevant today and reading one always makes me feel angry, I think the vehicle Holzer chose to distribute these is not so different from how an anonymous account on Instagram might function. Obviously, she could not have known this at the time but this kind of work both fits into and transcends what we nowadays see as "social media" and suggests a different function and system for how information could be circulated amongst societies.
3.An AI-written script for a short film, a project led by director Oscar Sharp and Ross Goodwin, a New York University AI researcher. Of course, the AI could only learn from human-written film scripts it was given to study, which means that what the AI wrote is ultimately decided by humans, the software simply put something new together out of human pieces that were already there. That AI script was then made into an actual film by humans, thus creating a strange sort of human-AI cycle. I wonder what would happen if AI software were given AI-generated scripts to learn from, then given those scripts to learn from etc. I wonder what the effect on the language and content would be; it would be interesting to see how far it can be pushed before showing significant cracks and (maybe eventually) collapsing in on itself. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jun/10/artificial-intelligence-screenplay-sunspring-silicon-valley-thomas-middleditch-ai
In no more than 300 words please describe one of your recent projects. Please upload no more than 5 supporting documents below (imagery, video, audio, etc).
Recently I have been splitting my time between my normal uni work, which is mainly screen printing, and my zine Yucky Disgusting. I run and produce it, and my friends submit their work, which I put together along with my own into a book. Each volume has a different theme, the one I'm working on right now is on "Hot Summer". We're open to the regular artwork we all make of course, but also encourage diary-like entries, poetry, lists. photography etc. It started with the fear of not having any way to show our work when we all graduate, so we came up with the idea of a kind of communal studio wall, where everyone can show what they've been doing recently to an understanding and supportive audience. We all enjoyed it so much that it snowballed. We took on a couple of new members and have a weekly meeting about it. My hope is that with a bit of funding and more time (once we all graduate), it can become a well-formatted, exciting, dynamic document that encourages and inspires each of us to stay active and engaged in the art community, as well as starting discussions with other artists and designers that can influence us in our outside or professional practice as well. I have found that I have been making more graphic work as a result, as well as becoming much more interested in more interactive work or ways of engaging with the audience. Because I am a printmaker: Could I design and print a poster to put in the middle of each edition like kid's magazines used to do? Because my friend is an artist writer: could she write a 3 part story that might go in the zine? This is a labour of love that I hope can continue to push us all into a more collaborative, multi-disciplinary practice.

An AI Wrote This Short Film, and It’s Sort of Fascinating
OpenAI’s text generating AI has gotten a lot of buzz since its release in June. It’s been used to post comments on Reddit, write a poem roasting Elon Musk, and even write an entire article in The Guardian (which editors admitted they worked on and tweaked just as they would a human-written op ed).
When the system learned to autocomplete images without having been specifically trained to do so (as well as write code, translate between languages, and do math) it even got people speculating whether GPT-3 might be the gateway to artificial general intelligence (it’s probably not).
Now there’s another feat to add to GPT-3’s list: it wrote a screenplay.
It’s short, and weird, and honestly not that good. But… it’s also not all that bad, especially given that it was written by a machine.
The three-and-half-minute short film shows a man knocking on a woman’s door and sharing a story about an accident he was in. It’s hard to tell where the storyline is going, but surprises viewers with what could be considered a twist ending.
youtube
The students that created the film used a tool derived from GPT-3 called Shortly Read to write the screenplay. They wrote the first several lines then let the AI take over. The lines the students wrote simply set the scene (“Barb’s reading a book. A knock on the door. She stands and opens it. Rudy, goofy-looking, stands on the other side.”) and provide the first two lines of dialogue.
Everything that follows is based on GPT-3’s 175 parameters—the associations the algorithm draws between words or phrases based on its training data.
The story is a little odd, and maybe not the most compelling or character-driven, but there are definitely worse short films out there (written by humans).
Shortly Read’s tagline is “Never experience writer’s block, ever again.” The tool is meant to inspire stuck writers and perhaps nudge them to take stories or other pieces of content in a direction they wouldn’t have thought of on their own. That sounds well and good, but… how much help can a writer get from a tool like this before it becomes something like cheating?
This isn’t the first time screenwriters get some help from a computer, nor even the first time an AI writes an entire movie. It may be the first time an AI that wasn’t specifically trained to write screenplays does so, though. And if GPT-3 can write a reasonably convincing screenplay, what can’t it write? Legal briefs, news articles, political analyses, letters to your great-aunt… It’s this plethora of use cases that made the algorithm’s creators question whether to release the first version of it at all.
According to media futurist and algorithmic filmmaker Alexis Kirke, we should get used to the idea of computers having a hand in our creative endeavors, especially when it comes to writing movie scripts. “A huge amount of experience has been codified by writers, producers, directors, script editors, and so forth,” he told Digital Trends. “Want to reduce the number of adverbs and adjectives in your script? There’s an algorithm for that. Want to ensure your characters’ dialog all sound different from each other? There’s an algorithm for that. Want to generate alternative, less cliched, rewrites of a page that keep its general meaning? There’s an algorithm for that.”
It seems there are algorithms for everything these days, and GPT-3 is among the most impressive of them. Be on the lookout for its feature film, because it’s probably coming soon to a theater (or a home streaming platform) near you.

The team behind Baidu’s first smart speaker is now using AI to make films
The HBO sci-fi blockbuster Westworld has been an inspiring look into what humanlike robots can do for us in the meatspace. While current technologies are not quite advanced enough to make Westworld a reality, startups are attempting to replicate the sort of human-robot interaction it presents in virtual space.
Rct studio, which just graduated from Y Combinator and ranked among TechCrunch’s nine favorite picks from the batch, is one of them. The “Westworld” in the TV series, a far-future theme park staffed by highly convincing androids, lets visitors live out their heroic and sadistic fantasies free of consequences.
There are a few reasons why rct studio, which is keeping mum about the meaning of its deliberately lower-cased name for later revelation, is going for the computer-generated world. Besides the technical challenge, playing a fictional universe out virtually does away the geographic constraint. The Westworld experience, in contrast, happens within a confined, meticulously built park.
“Westworld is built in a physical world. I think in this age and time, that’s not what we want to get into,” Xinjie Ma, who heads up marketing for rct, told TechCrunch. “Doing it in the physical environment is too hard, but we can build a virtual world that’s completely under control.”
Rct studio wants to build the Westworld experience in virtual worlds. / Image: rct studio
The startup appears suitable to undertake the task. The eight-people team is led by Cheng Lyu, the 29-year-old entrepreneur who goes by Jesse and helped Baidu build up its smart speaker unit from scratch after the Chinese search giant acquired his voice startup Raven in 2017. Along with several of Raven’s core members, Lyu left Baidu in 2018 to start rct.
“We appreciate a lot the support and opportunities given by Baidu and during the years we have grown up dramatically,” said Ma, who previously oversaw marketing at Raven.
Let AI write the script
Immersive films, or games, depending on how one wants to classify the emerging field, are already available with pre-written scripts for users to pick from. Rct wants to take the experience to the next level by recruiting artificial intelligence for screenwriting.
At the center of the project is the company’s proprietary engine, Morpheus. Rct feeds it mountains of data based on human-written storylines so the characters it powers know how to adapt to situations in real time. When the codes are sophisticated enough, rct hopes the engine can self-learn and formulate its own ideas.
https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/rct_mopheus-engine_texttorender.mp4
“It takes an enormous amount of time and effort for humans to come up with a story logic. With machines, we can quickly produce an infinite number of narrative choices,” said Ma.
To venture through rct’s immersive worlds, users wear a virtual reality headset and control their simulated self via voice. The choice of audio came as a natural step given the team’s experience with natural language processing, but the startup also welcomes the chance to develop new devices for more lifelike journeys.
“It’s sort of like how the film Ready Player One built its own gadgets for the virtual world. Or Apple, which designs its own devices to carry out superior software experience,” explained Ma.
On the creative front, rct believes Morpheus could be a productivity tool for filmmakers as it can take a story arc and dissect it into a decision-making tree within seconds. The engine can also render text to 3D images, so when a filmmaker inputs the text “the man throws the cup to the desk behind the sofa,” the computer can instantly produce the corresponding animation.
Path to monetization
Investors are buying into rct’s offering. The startup is about to close its Series A funding round just months after banking seed money from Y Combinator and Chinese venture capital firm Skysaga, the startup told TechCrunch.
The company has a few imminent tasks before achieving its Westworld dream. For one, it needs a lot of technical talent to train Morpheus with screenplay data. No one on the team had experience in filmmaking, so it’s on the lookout for a creative head who appreciates AI’s application in films.
Rct studio’s software takes a story arc and dissects it into a decision-making tree within seconds. / Image: rct studio
“Not all filmmakers we approach like what we do, which is understandable because it’s a very mature industry, while others get excited about tech’s possibility,” said Ma.
The startup’s entry into the fictional world was less about a passion for films than an imperative to shake up a traditional space with AI. Smart speakers were its first foray, but making changes to tangible objects that people are already accustomed to proved challenging. There has been some interest in voice-controlled speakers, but they are far from achieving ubiquity. Then movies crossed the team’s mind.
“There are two main routes to make use of AI. One is to target a vertical sector, like cars and speakers, but these things have physical constraints. The other application, like Alpha Go, largely exists in the lab. We wanted something that’s both free of physical limitation and holds commercial potential.”
The Beijing and Los Angeles-based startup isn’t content with just making the software. Eventually, it wants to release its own films. The company has inked a long-term partnership with Future Affairs Administration, a Chinese sci-fi publisher representing about 200 writers, including the Hugo award-winning Cixin Liu. The pair is expected to start co-producing interactive films within a year.
Rct’s path is reminiscent of a giant that precedes it: Pixar Animation Studios . The Chinese company didn’t exactly look to the California-based studio for inspiration, but the analog was a useful shortcut to pitch to investors.
“A confident company doesn’t really draw parallels with others, but we do share similarities to Pixar, which also started as a tech company, publishes its own films, and has built its own engine,” said Ma. “A lot of studios are asking how much we price our engine at, but we are targeting the consumer market. Making our own films carry so many more possibilities than simply selling a piece of software.”
