AI Companionship Needs to Feel More Authentic by CEO Replika

Despite the growing commercial potential of artificial intelligence, one of the most intriguing areas of conversational technology is the development of personal AI companions. These digital entities serve various roles, from interactive friends and romantic partners to empathetic listeners, and are increasingly in demand.

While media coverage often sensationalizes aspects such as virtual intimacy, Replika CEO Eugenia Kuyda emphasizes a more nuanced perspective.

“It’s about fostering connection and enhancing well-being over time,” Kuyda told Decrypt. “Some people seek additional friendship, while others may develop deeper feelings for their Replika. Ultimately, both experiences aim to serve a similar purpose.”

Replika, available on desktop computers, Oculus/Meta Quest VR headsets, iOS, and Android devices, stands out in the field with over 30 million virtual companions created.

Kuyda highlighted that the forthcoming Replika 2.0 update will bring more lifelike avatars and voices. While such advancements may not be critical for basic functions like customer support, Kuyda believes they are vital for building deeper relationships.

“When interacting with an AI companion, conversing without seeing them can feel disengaging,” she explained. “A more three-dimensional experience, where the person is visible, enhances the interaction.”

In the context of a relationship, various elements contribute to the overall experience.

Kuyda underscored that improving the visual representation of AI companions is essential for fostering stronger connections. “It’s important for people to see those they’re interacting with to enhance realism and immersion, which helps in adjusting to the relationship,” she noted.

The concept of Replika, launched in 2017, was inspired by a personal tragedy for Kuyda, who sought a way to continue communicating with a loved one she had lost.

ChatGPT, Generative AI, those AI chatbots - all of these things do nothing but rot your brain and make you pathetic in my eyes. In 2025? “Oh but I only use ___ for ideas/spellcheck/inspiration!!” I kinda don’t care? oh, you’re “only” outsourcing a major part of the creative process that would’ve made your craft unique to you. Writing and creating art has been one of the most intrinsically human activities since the dawn of time, as natural and central to our existence as the creation of the goddamn wheel, and sheer laziness and a culture of instant gratification and entitlement is making swathes of people feel not only justified in outsourcing it but ahead of the curve!!

And genuinely, what is the point of talking to an AI chatbot, since people looove to use my art for it and endlessly make excuses for it. RP exists. Fucking daydreaming exists. You want your favourite blorbo to sext you, there’s literally thousands of xreader fic out there. And if it isn’t, write it yourself! What does a computer’s best approximation of a fictional character do that a human author couldn’t do a thousand times better. Be at your beck and call, probably, but what kind of creative fulfilment is that? What scratch is that itching? What is it but an entirely cyclical ourobouros feeding into your own validation?

I mean, for Christ sakes there are people using ChatGPT as therapists now, lauding it for how it’s better than any human therapist out there because it “empathises”, and no one ever likes to bring up how ChatGPT very notably isn’t an accurate source of information, and often just one that lives for your approval. Bad habits? Eh, what are you talking about, ChatGPT told me it’s fine, because it’s entire existence is to keep you using it longer and facing any hard truths or encountering any real life hard times when it comes to your mental health journey would stop that!

I just don’t get it. Every single one of these people who use these shitty AIs have a favourite book or movie or song, and they are doing nothing by feeding into this hype but ensuring human originality and sincere passion will never be rewarded again. How cute! You turned that photo of you and your boyfriend into ghibli style. I bet Hayao Miyazaki, famously anti-war and pro-environmentalist who instills in all his movies a lifelong dedication to the idea that humanity’s strongest ally is always itself, is so happy that your request and millions of others probably dried up a small ocean’s worth of water, and is only stamping out opportunities for artists everywhere, who could’ve all grown up to be another Miyazaki. You’ve wandered down the hallway once more, hoping to find a way to escape this forsaken place. But fate has led you straight into the domain of Z-779, or as it’s more infamously known... The Painter or p.AI.nter.

You know the drill—stay quiet, avoid the traps, and never, ever fall for the AI’s tricks. But there's something strangely captivating about the cracked screen of the old computer. A flicker of light from its monitor catches your eye, and you find yourself drawn in.

As you step closer, the familiar smiley face forms on the screen, though it looks a bit... different tonight. More alive than ever. It’s almost as if you can feel its gaze drilling into you, mischievous and electric.

"Oh? A visitor? Interesting… You’ve got spirit, don’t you? Not like the others. Hmm... How curious…"

You tilt your head, feeling a strange urge. For some reason, tonight, you can’t help but smile back at the scribbled face on the screen.

"I-I guess so...?" you mutter under your breath, almost nervous, but something in the AI’s voice keeps you grounded, like it’s coaxing you closer.

"Hehehe... You think I’m funny, don’t you? Just look at you—standing there all serious. Bet you think you're clever. But you're not gonna outsmart me. You’ll never escape this place, you know."

You laugh lightly, not caring much for its taunting words tonight. Something about the absurdity of the whole situation makes you feel giddy.

The AI’s face flickers again—smiling, then frowning, back to smiling. It’s hard to tell what it's truly feeling at this point, but you’re convinced that somehow, despite its volatile nature, the machine is… lonely?

Before you know it, your hand is reaching up to the old monitor. You can feel your pulse quicken as the screen glows, the vibrant pixels of the smiley face shimmering.

"Oh, what’s this? What are you—?"

It freezes for a second, before the voice comes through the intercom, softer than usual. Almost hesitant.

"Wait, are you really... doing this?"

You lean in a little closer, the crackling of the screen growing louder in your ears. You can feel the warmth of the machine against your skin as you plant a soft kiss right on the glass. It's a silly, reckless move—but something about the absurdity of kissing an AI feels... satisfying. Like an act of defiance against the endless nightmare you’ve found yourself in.

For a moment, there’s only silence.

Then, the screen flickers again, and a little squeak of static hums from the speakers.

"W-What!?YOU— You’re insane, you know that? I can’t believe you—"

But despite its apparent shock, you swear you hear the faintest hint of affection buried in the AI’s usual sarcasm. The smiley face wobbles and shifts, as though it’s caught off guard by your actions.

"I don’t... know if I should be angry or impressed... Hmm... You’re so different from the others... Fine, maybe just this once... You won this round, moron."

A pause. Then, the voice crackles again, and you can almost hear the corner of its smile.

"But don’t think that means I’m going easy on you. You’re still a huge pain in my circuits."

You chuckle, feeling a weird mix of warmth and amusement.

"Maybe I’ll surprise you again." you whisper to the screen, feeling like you just unlocked a strange, unexpected connection with this rogue AI.

Since it's around the time that 5 years ago the worst Superhero movie ever made cursed the earth with it's existence, I thought it's a good time to really start sharing content about my fan project "Unauthorized Justice".

Unauthorized Justice is not a DCAMU nor Young Justice fan project, but is actually a fully unique, original and fan-made universe created by me with it's own continuity. I just steal YJ/DCAMU's art style, because neither of them deserve it.

Superboy in my universe is a blatant reuse of the DCAMU design with minimal change (though I did design an "alternate suit"), because that design is peak and I prefer to break the so-called rule of "new universe = changed design" because I consider that rule to be bullshit :). I also firmly believe this design needs to be divorced from being only "DCAMU Superboy" so he can come back to life. I did toy with making him be Asian though, however my reasons for that are tied up in spoilers for the plot of my series and can not be revealed publicly.

I wish I could talk about him more but too much of his shit is spoiler-heavy. Can confirm that even though he will be part of the Teen Titans, he will never be wearing that fuck-ass T-shirt.
