My Sera Myu project continues with Miyuki Kanbe

As a lifelong Sailor Moon fan, it is sometimes difficult for me to believe that there are whole corners of the fandom that I did not explore until recently.

I skimmed the surface, sticking to the anime and manga, while missing out on wonderful additions to the franchise like PGSM and the Sera Myu. Thankfully, I’ve started to rectify that oversight.

In the course of my little Sera Myu “side project”, I’ve finally encountered Miyuki Kanbe, who performed as Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon in a series of vampire-themed musicals. It’s so wonderfully out there; I love it.

Kanbe has proven to be a personal favorite; she really nailed Usagi as a character. Her voice and cadence is instantly iconic. I was heartbroken to learn that she passed away in 2008.

What’s particularly frustrating is that her wonderful performance is stuck on VHS, of all places. The Dracul series of musicals has never been released on DVD and has been out of print for decades.

So…about that “special project”…

VHS poses a particular challenge for a hobbyist like me. Turns out, there’s not a whole lot of THERE there. I spent a week just experimenting with various approaches, poking at the edges of what could be done, trying to find the limits of what is possible.

Ultimately, I settled on an approach. Is it perfect? By no means. Is it better?

They were already the Inner Senshi in the musicals from 2021 to 2022. Tuxedo Mask has played the role since 2018 and has been with Sera Myu since 2014. Sayaka Okamura once again takes on the role of antagonist. Previously, she was Snow Princess Kaguya. Misato Matsumoto is one of the Luna puppeteer from the Nogizaka Musical. Her voice was also heard on Shining Moon Tokyo.

Luna Throughout Different Media

As Usagi's mentor and close friend, Luna has been through some changes (design-wise) over the years in Sailor Moon history. Her noticeably big eyes in the manga, her plush form in PGSM 2003 until she later becomes part of the sailor senshi, her costuming in the Sera Myu musicals, her look during the Sailor Moon Crystal era, and her famous human form. Some people will say that they've seen it from Sailor Moon S: The Movie along with Sailor Moon: Eternal & Cosmos, but her human form was also seen in the manga along with Artemis and Diana. A part of me feels like the crew along with Naoko Takeuchi have a lot of fun with Luna and yet still give her a prominent role in the story.

the Outers are the funniest dramatic bitches out there because they're always 100% on the same page with everything immediately, no matter how weird or unexpected. like there is no question or hesitation from any of them in whether they're gonna steal baby Hotaru and run off with her and raise her as her lesbian throuple parents, its as if they had all discussed this as a possible outcome already and its just all going according to plan

but also they will be 100% on their same page with their actions and have also reached the character growth that makes them accept they are on the same team as the Inners and they need to work together rather than sacrifice themselves needless.

I based her more on the Nelke version of the musicals rather than the Bandai she's supposed to represent because I don't like the black bows much. I really need to do her eyes, paint all the details and add some glitters and pearls!

How old are the Witches 5?

After my "how tall are the Witches 5" here's a post trying to find out how old they are.

I'd like to start by saying their ages are probably not consistent among the different versions (manga, 90s anime, sera myu, crystal) but I still think the range is similar.

Manga

Given the format being in black and white, it's hard to distinguish which colour are their respective bows. The only picture in color in the Mugen uniform is Mimete, and her bow is green, meaning she should be in high school (so around 15-18 years old). I would assume it's the same for the others.

90s anime

Just like a lot of characters (especially villains), the Witches 5 look significantly older in the 90s anime. But I do think it's only because of the art style and their age is still close to their manga counterpart. Unlike the manga, only two witches were shown wearing the Mugen uniform (mainly Viluy, Tellu only when her student ID is shown). In both cases, their bows were both green. This should mean these two are in high school (again 15-18 years old). I would assume most of the other witches are probably in the same age range, but I think Eudial is probably 18 (or more) and the oldest. First, driving a car is 18+ in Japan, and the other witches called her old behind her back so it seems fair to assume she's older than them.

Crystal

Meanwhile in Crystal, except for Eudial, every witches wear a blue ribbon, meaning they are in middle school (and Eudial is in high school, making her the oldest). This means Mimete, Viluy, Tellu, Cyprine and Ptilol are around 13-15 while Eudial is 15-18 (possibly closer to 15-16 so she wouldn't be that much older than the others). It also makes them all (minus Eudial) around the same age as the inners, who were 14-15 around that time and still in middle school.

And let's add the musicals for good measure. I just want to precise that the green bows are not the default in the musicals, Hotaru is wearing her blue bow in all versions, and there were elementary school girls wearing the red bow.

Bandai Myu

Eudial, Mimete, Tellu and Viluy are shown wearing the green bow with their uniforms, so it's fair to assume they are high school age. Cyprine isn't shown with a school uniform in this musical but I think it's reasonable to think she'd be around the same age as her fellow witches.

Nelke Myu (Un Nouveau Voyage)

This time, all the Witches 5 are shown as Mugen students. And just like for the older musicals, they wear the green bow. In one scene in particular, Eudial is referred to as "senpai" by Mimete, which may indicate she is the oldest (or a reference to the 90s anime where Eudial is called senpai by Mimete). Mimete is also referred to as "senpai" by Minako, seeming to confirm that they are indeed high schoolers (as opposed to Minako and the other senshi being middle schoolers).

In conclusion

In most continuity, the Witches 5 appear to be of high school age (15-18) except for Crystal where most of them are of middle school age (13-15) while Eudial is in high school. In either case, it appears that Eudial is depicted as the oldest.

My personal headcanon is that, if they are in high school, Mimete and Tellu are in first year, Viluy and Cyprine/Ptilol are in second year and Eudial is in third year. Similarily as the Spectre Sisters who the order of youngest to oldest is the reverse of the inners (Petz being the oldest while Jupiter is the youngest etc), my headcanon would follow that logic but with the Witches 5 following the order of the inners age. So Tellu would be the youngest just like Jupiter (15), followed by Mimete (15-16), Viluy (16), Cyprine (16-17) and then Eudial (18).

Sailor Stars Best Song Collection. It has always bugged me Setsuna is missing. Maybe she had to go to the Time Streams? First CD I bought in complete Japanese with zero clue of what any of it meant... but it was Sailor Moon. Turns out this is the bootleg version since it has 16 tracks instead of 10... My sixteen year old self surely didn't know!

Kaze mo Sora mo Kitto… Confession about this song. This is the song that inspired my penname. Years later I heard there was a character in Digimon with the same name. I was not thrilled since I don't like Digimon.
