I’ve slept so much the past few days it’s unreal. Covid hit me like a train. I’ve had it a few times but never like this. Granted my chronic illness/pain/autoimmune shit is way worse now than it was the first times. (Round 1 I lost hearing though so 🙃) but gosh. Husband being the tea mvp and not being a dick about me sleeping. (He was a turd about my day 3 being awful after day two wasn’t so bad. Chronic illness whatmorecanisay) Forced me to get some much needed rest after working tirelessly since getting two jobs. Upset I lost so many days of work. But this week I get 8 hours of overtime so hopefully that makes up for it in some way.
I work the next 7 days so that won’t be great for me to get full recovery. But I don’t have to work at the clinic this week. So that’s good. Then again maybe I should pick up a day or two. After all it’s just 2 hours a day. Meh.
Got most of Christmas shopping done. What I can afford at least. Hoping to still snag a Lego table if Walmart online stops giving me a hard time. Fingers crossed.
I got nothing for my husband. I really only had two ideas in mind. But bleh. Money. Maybe I’ll just get him a bigger bday present this year.
Dental school reached out to me today to ask if I still wanted to enroll. Which means I need to ask parents if they can still help me like they said they would.
I really didn’t think this term would feel right for me. Timeline wise. Everything just felt so stressful. I’d already be graduated by now if I did the last course term. But now I’m at the cafe and I don’t plan on renewing my Rbt cert at the end of jan. So I’d be done with that and can just do cafe and school on saturdays. 🤷♀️ I’d be done before the end of March (which is when my lease is up) maybe I’d put us in a better situation to renew our lease or find something better. Internship would be easy peasy to find being that I’m done with cafe at 2 on weekdays. Hmm now that I’ve written all that out, maybe this is a great time for it. I would miss the cafe though. I’m having a lot of fun there and my stress levels have plummeted.
Trying to read more. Maybe that can be my ~resolution~ easy enough
I have a lot of big feelings about leaving aba. I miss my texas client dearly. I was so proud of the work I did with them. I made a difference. Ya know? I feel like I’ve done nothing the past year here. It’s definitely the bcbas. And the therapists. And the clinic in general. I miss inhome therapy. I’m not sure I’ll go back to aba. It’s just not the same. I just miss my baby bird.
If you made it this far..damn I should buy you a snack or something. Thanks this has been Brianna’s midnight word vomit.
Coming back an hour later to state that I can’t fucking sleep and I’m very annoyed by it. Just laying here with my eyes closed and nothin is happening.
Maybe I’ll go get a snack. Put on some YouTube sleep video in the living room. Of course my husbands slept on the couch the whole time we were sick and now that he’s actually in bed with me I can’t sleep and wanna go to the couch 🙃

Watch Somebody to Love on Tubi
Watch Somebody to Love on Tubi: https://link.tubi.tv/r7uqBHBCgOb
So thats the lie path of life tells that their here to be social control instead of go and tells the behaviourals to hit us
The new lady in the lower bunk of my bunk is Catholic so she can talk to me in ways I understand
She said I do things that remind behaviourals of their mothers need to beat them for societal demands and that's why I inspire aggression from people sometimes Im the world to behaviourals
I told her this shelter does really get to me so she don't have to apologize about anything to me passification is creepy and if it's a bad day in an bad situation you don't have to be on correction all the time
I didn't grow up with a lot of physical exertion I enjoyed....indigenous policy is to make indigenous people sedentary
Martin Luther King jr....finds white protestantism a separate civil category from white
So when I go through a hostage battery of having to stay still at an attempted fight later it gets repressed and I spas out a bit....but I'm finding help and I'm not going to freak out....
People try to poison people here some of the donated clothes are sick and the quarter pounder had knock ya out e.coli in here....but I think for someone quiet I'm not going to go through a multiple episode I'm pretty sure I'm so feminine that those creepy staff dudes will get anything they threaten
Tex this pastor I met outside of fort Worth Texas....told me to realize this is like a lawless western....and if that creepy key freak won't stop walking around threatening to whip us with his key strand the like town governor will take him and publicly bull whip him for refusing to stop taking things on an illegal citizenship
The behaviourals have personalities the Catholic Vatican calls Jew hatreds....they act like a Jew instead of a Sephardic or chassidic or a sectarian...
So I don't dislike your mother for shaking you if she didn't do it to you the surrounding congregation and secular heathen violence would have....and you maybe would have died if she wouldn't train you to have christian obsessive compulsive behaviours
Their he....thans in their history their ain't no women's history of achievement and responsibility and they have to accept their oppression and dance and prostitute for what a man will give
So your mother shook you so you would learn to dance and accept what a man would give those people would kill you if you weren't empathic and willing to mission and help
Well God represents terrorism also.....if you were too perfectly kept you would have called them unGodly and killed them in return think the awful mess
This pastor online said that homeless people have to be prophetic tribes....and even if their good people those people just want to call God a white lab rat
I have been around good people and people like purity better then mixed manifestations there would have been way more war if women wouldn't have decided on compromise
My mom's friend was Catholic with a military son and you if you have had a seizure do finally react to the male staff like classic films they called women beautifully handsome in if you don't seizure then mkultra you do really start acting like a sister and don't like people thinking your less disabled then you are
I was kind of scared for her about the seizure I thought she might die
I don't know if I'm gifted with divination or prophesy but if that staff won't stop threatening us with homelessness is illegal and they will chase and drive us out of town......then they are going to really chase and drive him out of anywhere he tries to go in Riverside
He is with that lady that survived in the Wisconsin cold and they are going to find him really illegal put him with her so he survives being driven out of anywhere he tries to go here
I think homelessness is more third scape....and it's these stories if your around so and sos shifts and they see that they will go up to you and beat you up because it's God.....and those people want to be greedy sex maniacs in a house of God....called the mission inn
Those people wanted to have sex in there? Im sorry but it's church it's just not arousing
Its people who can find church sexual?.......or desire things people find abnormal....so I think their on a lot of drugs....the Parisian room?....their on a lot of drugs
Foucault on inversion to find a lady cop willing to beat up the homeless is very wagnerian they are abnormally altered the head shape weirdoness etc
That's me about the gigantic jail being a fictitious company cops are people too and I don't think they like or want that to do much
I more fear that they will finally start binge training me the way they did the jail survivors they will do this anoerexic stuff to me like keep me at shelter 60 days then they will start trying to give me repetitious stuff
And from what I've noticed to other binge situations is if the behaviour is bad and off pope Francis they let the chaos go on till their shocked away from ever doing it again
Dont put that there I don't want a business district where a mission use to be.....they kept bothering peoples neighborhoods with justified commutes and there was this totalled accident on mission avenue and parking finally reduces
So I think it's more scary that cops won't get involved anymore so people realize what was stolen from them like shares and treaties.....they will just let it get chaotic till the behaviour is really shocked to stop
Thats what was apologized to me about a large homeless population here there was a Jesus here and they have a history migrating here to confess sins think the tents and carnivals and circus it was
Ya know if the mission inn was a basilica again and they could pilgrimage like wise men from the east and dutiful Muslim spectacles then pack up all business and go to the country to do strong forgiving things
Then instead of candy lane there could be a topcoder or other agency....and they would sell assistance ya know these people truly listen though and they can actually trouble shoot your problems for you and get those needed logistics and planning worked out
Heart of darkness was once again recommended to me....I always wanted to know why my technology habits became indigenous dance but pseudo religious weird and unstudied and it was simm theory and did hurt me in cognitive ways till I needed learning therapies
So Mary baker Eddy told me about the trespassing stuff that that basilica though maybe has a nun grave of an indigenous origin and they disturb it just to humanoid me
So if you ask me people that obsessive that they are able to design space in ways that curse other people out and revenge on them maybe has something cannibal about it like maybe kurtz stays in there regularly and has used lots of child blood and fetal stem cells
And all the black people if they dance yell and contort themselves quickly and the Columbus people keep shooting light into the back point of the center where your lower brain meets your cerebellum so you know where the vaccine virus lodged itself and why you get so crazy angry and want to shake the pain off in ecstatic dance also
Started with polio if you needle shoot it up though it can pass through the space your spine blocks it from your brain
He rants that way because he is a rapist and tries to scare you of police so you don't leave children of God cults to stay outside in regularly patrolled districts
That bus stop though every six hours or so a police comes by
And that's someone that hides poverty in the woods and rapes it or allows kills to happen they always want to inspire off monitoring

rewritting lurking for love bc i have nothing else to work on
The doorbell... I rub my eyes and wipe away the dry crust. Consciousness came flooding back to me as i lay on top of my sweaty bed sheets. Texas is pretty different from where I lived before. I’ve been here for a few months now, but everything still feels new. I attempt to slide myself off the bed, my legs almost putting me off balance from my drowsy state. As much as I'd like to continue relaxing under the covers, i still have errands to do today. Hm, let’s freshen up first...
I relieve myself and brush my teeth afterwards. I squint at the mirror. God, my hair looks fucking awful! I fix it rather quickly, wary of the sorry person ringing my doorbell once again.
“Ugh...” I go downstairs and make my way through the living room to reach the front door. Checking the peephole, it’s my blond neighbour.... what was his name again? Shit. “Hi, Vincent! I got your mail by mistake again.” he said with a shy look to his face, something almost proud in the shine of his eyes. “Damn, that’s the fifth time this month! I wonder what’s going on at the post office...” I questioned; I can’t keep causing this guy this much trouble. Honestly, I don’t know anything about him, other than that I’ve seen him work at a retail store close by.
“Thanks again for bringing me my mail, um... Ja- Jacob.” IS THAT IT? Oh, he seems a bit taken back! Score, baby. I’m a genius. “Uh, yeah... Here ya go.” After he hands over the package and envelopes, I place my mail on my coffee table to open, but then I noticed... Jacob is still standing there at my doorway. Might as well be friendly, right? I scratch my eyebrow, mindless, trying to come up with some kind of conversation. “So, Jacob, how’s your day been going?” Yeah, everyone loves a good, shallow small talk. Haha............. “Oh, uh... I’ve been doing OK.” He states plainly, a faint blush to his controlled shock. “I’ve been needing to check out this one movie for a while...” OK, cool, a topic. “It’s called ‘Revenge of the Jackalopes’.” That sounds actually awful, must be a funny horror movie. “Haha, sounds like some shitty old movie, must be fun.” I chuckle, crossing my arms as to get more comfortable standing up. “Yeah, it’s an obscure one from the 1950’s.” Jacob seems unphased by any of my input, cool. “It was directed by the same guy who made the movie ‘Invasion of The Shmangies’.” That also sounds awful but more interesting, maybe aliens? LOL.... “He also directed the movie ‘Attack of The Blorbo Worms’. I liked that one.” Oh, we got ourselves a rambler! I have no clue about any of these, but okay.
“That sounds cool but I really —” I was cut off, he is absolutely absorbed by his own train of thought. “’Invasion of the Shmangies’ had its positives, too; but I felt like the writing in ‘Attack of the Blorbo Worms’ was a little more consistent.” How fun it is to actually see someone zone out in real time. But I REALLY need to go. “Dude—” “I think if they balanced more of the pacing and change some of the dialogue, the details of why the Shmangies were invading would of made more sense.” “Jacob.” I stated, almost demanding attention. “Hmm?” Finally! He hummed as a recognition. “These movies sound super cool, but I really need to work, so...” My hands fall to my side. “O-oh! Uh, sorry ‘bout my ramblin’. Didn’t mean to hold you up!” Jacob’s face turned a nice mimic of his shirt, red. Hehe... That’s pretty cute. “No worries; see you, Jacob!” I grinned, eyes squinting and taking in as much as I could analyse. “Goodbye, Vincent.” His face fell flat. Hmm, not a fan of byes? “See you ‘round.” a small smile, now. I close my door and focus back to my mail. Let’s see............ Bills, blabla... Package!!!! My new band T-shirt came!
Now I must work... Having a remote online job has its pros and cons. It's nice I get to work from home, but sitting down all day does take a toll on my back. Most of it involves sending documents back and forth and occasionally having to print them. I wish ink cartridges weren't so expensive... Ugh, I NEED to eat something. I’ve managed to get a good chunk of work done for today. My fridge has been nearly cleaned out for a while; it's about time I go get some groceries. I hop into my car and go to the nearby market. Mental note to explore and see if there's any cheaper place.
The wheels on this fucking cart are horrible, I need to grab a cart that’s free... It wobbles with me through some aisles. I actually find an empty one! Nice. Goodbye broken wheels. I then repack what I had in my cart to the other, some canned goods, pasta, lots of snacks... I need some meat! Scrolling to the meat market, I see a familiar figure. It’s Jacob! He seems to be critically examining the fish cuts. Well, I need some cuts, and I don’t oppose a small talk. I stand a bit closer to the display and catch my neighbour’s attention pretty quickly.
“Well, howdy, Vincent. Nice seeing you again so soon!” The faintest blush on his curious expression. Hmmm, okay, I admit I find him handsome. “Hey! Still doing well? I’m just picking up some groceries— way overdue!” I smiled, looking at the display then back at him. Jacob seems to be staring intently at the fish fillets, again. “You like seafood?” I questioned, trying to start the conversation again. “I LOVE seafood.” Big fan, noted. “I’ve been in the mood for salmon lately.” Oh, yum! Jacob fidgets in his spot for a moment, seems to contemplate something. “Hey, uh, I plan on cooking the salmon tonight and I was wonderin’... maybe you wanna come over for dinner?” His green eyes sheepishly hide to the side, not meeting mine. “I cook so much that I always have leftovers, so it’d be nice to share this with someone else.” OH? “You can join me for movie night, too, while we eat together.” Well, I can’t refuse a nice meal and a pretty face at the same time. But how are leftovers a bad thing? I nod, smiling. “For sure! Sounds great.” “That’s great! How does 6 PM sound? I’ll be sure to have the salmon done before you get here.” I mean, hell yeah? I pay for my groceries, pack them and drive home. After putting all my groceries away, I sigh relief, having something light as I watch TV. Just waiting for the clock to strike 6.
Next to my house was Jacob’s bungalow. Once in a while I do see him sitting on his patio chair. Sometimes he’ll even wave to me after I come home. Knock knock. There's a plastic halloween decoration on the corner, nice. I hear some clicking and light budging until... “Vincent? Please, come on in!” And so, I do. “Thank you for inviting me in.” I bow my head, reverencing. “Make yourself at home, get cosy on the couch if you’d like.” Hmm, okay. I scan around the small living room. His modern TV sticks out from the rustic appearance of everything else. How nice! A fish tank! “I know I said the salmon was gonna be done before you get here, but I ended up forgetting one of the ingredients, so I had to make an extra trip back to the store.” I heard his voice from the kitchen; he’s crouching to check the oven. It already smells very nice... “Must’ve been a bother.” I stated, mindless. Watching him. “Yeah, but it was worth it. I wanted to make sure everything was perfect...” Aww, how sweet. Points up for team Jacob. He turned and his eyes peered deeply into mine. “...for you.” OH! Suddenly, the kitchen timer went off. “It’s just about done now! Let me set up our plates...” I’ll let that one go, the salmon sure smells nice.
He walked over to the counter, sliding on the oven mitts and the salmon, off. The aroma is even stronger now, and my stomach growls in response. I’m embarrassed.... “Heh heh, someones’s hungry! I can hear you all the way here!” Kill me. Jacob comes over to the couch and sits next to me, handing over my plate. “Thank you!” Wow, my food looks like it came straight out of one of those fancy cooking magazines. Fuck, it tastes even better. “Jacob, this is... SO good.” I hide my mouth politely with my hand, my eyes widen as to intensify my praise. “Better than I’ve ever had.” “R-Really!? That’s sweet of you to say, Vincent. I knew making that extra store trip was worth it.” He fixes himself in the couch, a little shy now, it seems? I can’t read him well. “Now, let me go start up the movie.” We both focus on the screen as we eat out dinner together.
This ‘Revenge of the Jackalopes’ movie did have cheesy acting and effects, as I expected, but I found it more charming than outright bad. This will definitely do some points on my diary. We both finish out dinner pretty early into the movie, but at least I can give my full focus on the plot now. From what I'm understanding, the jackalopes are tired of being hunted and experimented on, and now they're rampaging the Midwest. Pretty funny. Oh, wow, a guy got his eyes gouged out by a pair of antlers. “That was awesome.” I pointed. While I’m distracted, I feel weight shifting behind me. Then, something grazing against the back of my head. I shift my gaze carefully, Jacob’s arm is wrapped around the top of the couch. A smile to his profile. Under the soft glow of the TV, his scruffy style seems even more alluring... His hand’s resting on my shoulder... Is this an attempt to flirt? Because I take it. I shift ever so closer, I feel his hand rubbing my shoulder in a circular motion. As awkward as it is since I’m taller, I lay my head on his shoulder. He’s being sweet, so I will, too... I felt myself zoning out towards the end of the movie. Eyes heavy, fluttering against my attempts to keep awake. That’s weird, I never feel this sleepy. “Tired?” His hummed voice vibrating through his chest, it felt warm. “Hm.” I nodded, and he gently wraps his arm completely around me. That’s bold! So, he was flirting! But my mind’s almost gone, his body is warm... “Sleep well, sunshine.”
As I woke up, I couldn’t remember the moments of my last consciousness. I yawned, turning over... This is not my bed. This is not my house. “Mornin’, Vincent. Did you sleep OK?” Jacob’s voice greets me, it seems like it’s still dark outside. I sit up and look behind me, he's in the kitchen again. Back towards me, I watch him cook before measuring my words. “What... happened last night?” My voice is croaky and quiet; I cough to get it better. “Oh, you fell asleep during the end of the movie. I didn’t want to disrupt you, so I let you sleep here.” I then noticed the blanket placed over me, how nice of him. Jacob stepped closer and grabbed it, “I didn’t want you feelin’ cold in the middle of the night, so I sorta... tucked you in.” He carelessly folded the blanket. “I also made us some breakfast! It’s nothin’ special, just some eggs and toast.” “I, uhh... I’m sort of embarrassed, but thank you for being so nice, Jacob.” I look for my phone, it’s dim light registering that it’s 4:40 now. I have never in my life waken up so early. He walked back to the kitchen after placing the blanket... somewhere. I pat my hair, feeling strange. “Do you usually wake up so early?” I make some light conversation, I guess. The sizzling of oil is barely heard from where I sit. “My sleep schedule is kinda everywhere. I’m a night owl.” His monotone voice reminds me of... someone. Who was it again? I feel strangely nostalgic. “Plus, I wanted to watch the sun rise.” I will forever not get that. It’s pretty but you’d never catch me DEAD waking up early for trivial pleasantries. He walks over with two plates. He’s way too nice to me. What’s up? “Here, you’ll think better after you eat.” I’d feel worse if I declined his hospitality. I grab the plate in front of me and look it over. Sunny side up, toast. Yummers. “Thanks, Jacob... I really need to properly thank you sometime.” I almost want to wink, but it wasn’t necessarily a flirt. I felt bad, honestly. He comes to sit next to me with his own plate, silently. I take a few bites of my toast, crispy and buttery. Jacob cuts into his eggs and dips his toast into the yolk. It felt a little awkward only hearing each other's loud crunching in between bites... “So, uhmm, what do you do for fun? I saw the fish tank in the corner of the room.” I nodded to it; he nearly jolts up from his seat in response. My eyes curiously widen. “y-yeah. I really like fish-keeping.” “Awesome! I thought about starting someday, what got you into it?” “Well, I used to go fishing a lot with my dad. I remember being upset how I couldn't keep the fish I caught, then he introduced me to fish-keeping.” Daddy’s boy? That’s sweet... “It's a nice little thing... decorating the tank and choosing what kinds of fish you want.”
All that's left for me is play gay ass dress up. I don't want to play stupid dress up, I want LORE!!!!!!!!!!! I NEED SCRAPS YO WORK ON PLEEEESAAAAAASSSEEEEEEEEEEEE
#wip#whatever bro#what#after i do this i might add in new shit idk#what am i supposed to do with a few canon interactions

aw, South Africa didn't even place on the podium for this year's supercomputing competition. That's the first time that's happened, probably because this team didn't get to do training with Dell in Texas. In fact, they're competing 100% online this time, even last year's team got to do the first few rounds in person and go to Texas, even if they didn't get to go to Germany. Plus they had to share one pair of clusters so you couldn't get an advantage with a better designed or more more powerful hardware choice. South Africa has Government Funding so we usually bring top tier equipment.
I can imagine that motivation and focus is hard when you're just doing it all from home, being in a dedicated Space where it's All Supercomputing All Day really helps keep you on track, and that's essential since you effectively have gain the skills of a full time junior sysadmin in a year while still doing your degree. South Africa brings completely fresh students every year so they don't get the benefit of students with legacy knowledge

Challenge 144: 10 Years, Looking Forward: A-Frame Studio Life Buckle up-- this is a long one! Wow, ten years. It’s hard to believe a whole decade has passed since Square Carousel began, and since I graduated college. In some ways, it feels like another lifetime, and in others, it feels vastly shorter than the decade before that, from ages 12 to 22. Time is fascinating that way. College was such an incredibly impactful time period, but just a measly 4 years-- I could have done college 2.5 more times back-to-back in the years since I graduated, but somehow those four, from 2007-2011 were monumental. It’s hard to believe I’ll be in a post-college world without Square Carousel, since the group has been a constant in my life these last ten years. I’m really proud that we made it this far and are able to choose to end the journey, rather than it fizzling out or dying from lack of interest. Sometimes it felt like that might happen, but other times it felt like we were blooming. There have been many ups and downs over the course of this journey. And damn, it was a lot of hard to work to keep running, but I am so grateful for the learning experience. I know so much more about leadership now than I ever would have before-- the delicate balance of having rules to keep the group running (deadlines, participation requirements, our dreaded “strike system”) and keeping up morale (knowing when to forgive slip-ups, keeping challenges sufficiently entertaining and well...challenging, making sure the group feels like it’s a community). Elizabeth and I were reluctant leaders, just naturally having to take those roles as other original members of the group left and were replaced by folks who needed guidance. We definitely didn’t seek it out, but we knew that if the group were to stay alive, we had to put some structure into the system. Pretty early on we made our rules and guidelines, extended the challenges to 3 weeks from just 2, and worked on our visual image online. Our awesome logo was made by former member Casey Crisenbery, and we switched from Wordpress to Tumblr, purchasing a URL, and Casey using special code for custom organization on the site. Sketch critiques were now a halfway point through our 3 weeks-long challenge, which helped a lot with the community aspect and engagement. We started doing interviews for each member, reaching out to other illustration groups, blogs and submission sites and had our work featured on a few of them. Some of us even got jobs from the connections made through Square Carousel! There was a bad stretch several years ago when I wasn’t sure we’d make it through, with toxic behavior and a few folks petitioning for removing deadlines and structure, making everything optional. One thing I can tell you with certainty after ten years of working with artists is that 95% of us require deadlines to do anything, and incentives/obligations for meeting those deadlines, or it just isn’t going to happen! Elizabeth and I, along with a few other solid members, were able to keep the structure we’d worked hard to create, but the toxic culture had already killed group morale and we lost a lot of members simultaneously. That was a sad and scary time for Square Carousel, but I didn’t want to go out on a sour note. So the small group of us picked the pieces back up again, did a little refocus on our goals as a collective and created an “Admin” so Elizabeth and I didn’t have to carry the entire burden alone. I am forever grateful to Sayada and Jordan for stepping up into these roles to help us get the train back on track. Sayada especially picked up a lot of responsibilities that a newer member shouldn’t have to worry about, and was a total rockstar for Square Carousel. I wish we’d had her with us for the whole ride. I’m so happy that we’ve had a few really great years with some really loyal and talented artists to round out the experience at Year Ten. There is nobody I’m more thankful for than my Good Cop, Elizabeth, though. She was so reliable, always able to provide balance in our leadership roles, and such a wonderful shoulder to cry on when things got too stressful. Elizabeth, thank you for this journey and for being my SC Wife all these years! It’s so funny because of all the original members, you were one of the only ones I hadn’t really known from SCAD classes, yet you’re the SCAD Illustration friend I have remained most connected to most consistently. Nothing bonds you quite like running an illustration collective does! It also cracks me up that in all these years, we hadn’t ever facetimed or talked on the phone until a few months ago--I didn’t even know your mannerisms or voice, but knew you so well anyway. My greatest internet friend! I love you dearly and it truly won’t feel right, the absence of our weekly SC conversations. Thank you for all of the memories! As just a member and artist, this group has helped me grow so much professionally. It was my client when I didn’t have clients. It was my motivation to paint when I didn’t feel creative. It was my source of portfolio-worthy work, but also my safe place to experiment and fail when I was trying something new. The girl who started as a Square Carousel member freshly graduated in 2011 was working part-time at Urban Outfitters, had basically no money, and no clue how to promote herself. The “studio” was a corner of the bedroom and nobody took her seriously. But a stubborn dedication and the security, purpose and structure of Square Carousel helped the slow change from that lost girl to a full-time freelancing woman. Now, in 2021, I have been doing freelance illustration fully for six years, through contract jobs, editorial, publishing, advertising, commission and local work, as well as selling prints and products online, in local shops and events. I am not making the big bucks, certainly, and I still have goals I’m working towards, but damn, if that isn’t a glow-up, I don’t know what is. Thank you for helping me achieve my impossible dream, Square Carousel, and always being a place with the right amount of advice, support and critique. Ten years, 34 artist interviews, 38 artists, and 144 challenges. I’m the only member to have completed every single one. 144 illustrations through the years. Some were game-changers for my style and my portfolio. Some were total stinkers and I hope you don’t go looking for them. But all were an important step in my career. So, in ten more years? I’ll be 42 years old, which is very weird because I have never imagined myself that old before... it’s hard to honestly say what that would look like, especially considering the world we are currently living in and how the last 4/5 years have proven that anything (awful) can happen. Jordan and I have a goal to move to Colorado in the next 4 or 5 years, and I’d love to have a little A-Frame in the mountains with a loft studio, shown in my illustration here. Texas has become extremely problematic, especially after the winter storm in February of this year, and will be impacted greatly by climate change, both environmentally and economically. Right now, Austin is still booming, but at some point the lack of foresight in this state’s government is going to screw over the residents and it will be one of the places from which climate refugees run. Is that tomorrow? No, obviously not. But I want to already be settled someplace more stable, having grown some roots, before other folks start to roll in. But, to be able to do that, I need to rely less on my local jobs and connections and be able to have an “anywhere career.” So right now I am focusing on expanding in that way, particularly with book cover illustration and design. I’ve been doing a lot of portfolio work and self-publishing jobs, and hope to get an agent that can shop my work to big-time publishers sometime in the next year or two. Let’s say I succeed at all of those things in five years-- we’re in our Colorado A-Frame, I’m illustrating book covers (and I’ve also convinced my parents to come with me, and maybe a couple friends!). The next five years after that? I don’t know... hopefully a lot of adventures. Hopefully a lot of cool jobs, but also a lot of work/life balance. Right now, I don’t want kids, so the A-Frame will be filled with cats. Maybe we’ll have an old camper van for regular road trips around the western National Parks. I’d love for my work to reflect those passions-- more jobs with outdoor brands, parks, organizations. More book covers for stuff I’d personally love to read and keep on my overflowing shelf. That’s the vague goal for me in ten years, but I don’t want to plan any further than that, because life just also needs to happen the way it’s going to happen. There are parts of my current life I planned for in 2011... and there are parts I never, ever would have guessed. I hope there’s some fun surprises in 2031, too. Thanks for the decade, Square Carousel. Joining illustration collectives will always be the first bit of advice I give fresh graduates. Caitlin

All-In
Summary: Jace is nervous about coming out to Alec as grey ace, but Alec reassures him that he has nothing to worry about. He is, and always has been, perfect for Alec.
For @mewsiex
A/N: I hope you like it, Kissa <3 I tried to incorporate a few of your prompts into this. I'm really bad at writing smut and I'm terrible at doing it "on command" so I wanted to give you something that wasn't smut - read: something that isn't completely awful, lololol. I really hope you enjoy it, anyway! The title comes from my strange urge to put poker into this fic (which I did, for about a line aksfjks) after playing about three hours' worth of Texas Hold 'Em last night with family. No warnings within (for once)! I hope you enjoy this!
Read it on ao3: HERE
The noise at the table was comfortable, but Alec knew Jace sometimes wasn’t in the mood to deal with even the barest hint of laughter or the quietest of jeers, so he couldn’t say he was surprised when Jace excused himself to go to the bathroom and never came back.
Alec let him be for a few minutes; he knew Jace liked his privacy. But after a half hour passed and it became clear that Jace had disappeared with no intentions of returning, Alec was sent by Maryse to find him and check on him. It was rare that the family got a chance to play poker together, and Alec knew that Maryse knew Jace wouldn’t have left without a good reason. Secretly, Alec was worried, too, but his family didn’t need to know that.
Alec checked all of the usual spots first: his bedroom, the training room, Alec’s room, the ops center. When none of those turned up anything, Alec sighed and began to climb the stairs to the roof. It was rare, but sometimes, when he was upset or needed to think about something, Jace would find his way to the Institute’s roof and stay there, oftentimes for hours on end.
Alec reached the top of the steps and pushed the door open, revealing - not to his surprise, but still to his dismay - the hunched figure of his parabatai standing near the edge of the roof. He could tell Jace was tense by the set of his shoulders, and he was gripping the concrete so hard Alec feared it might crumble underneath his fingers.
“Hey,” he called, and Jace froze, his back going rigid. Alec frowned. Usually Jace was happy to see him, or at the very least relieved that it was Alec who had gone after him instead of someone else who understood him less.
“Are you okay?” Alec asked, moving closer to Jace in the frigid night air. His breath made little white clouds as he exhaled. “Dude, come inside. It’s freezing out here.”
Jace shook his head, not saying anything. Alec worried his bottom lip between his teeth and approached Jace cautiously. This wasn’t like him.
When he reached his parabatai, Alec placed a gentle hand on Jace’s shoulder, turning him around until they were facing each other. “Hey,” Alec said, his voice soft, tone inquiring. “What’s wrong?”
Jace shook his head again, avoiding Alec’s eyes. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides, but Alec could tell he wasn’t angry. Alec stepped forward and took one of Jace’s hands, unfolding his fist and tangling their fingers together. “I know something’s wrong, Jace. I know you. Talk to me.”
“It’s not - ” Jace broke off, sighing. “It’s not anything we need to be worried about yet.”
“That’s obviously not true,” Alec pointed out. “You’re worried about it right now.”
Jace rolled his eyes. “Yeah, but I’m just being stupid.”
“Hey,” Alec said, “I’m not saying you can’t be stupid sometimes, because you definitely can and are, but if something is bothering you? That’s never stupid, Jace.” He shuffled closer and wrapped his arms around his parabatai, placing one hand on the small of his back and moving it up & down his spine in a comforting manner. “I won’t think it’s stupid.”
Jace cringed, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth. “You might think it’s weird, though. You might not want to be with me anymore.”
“Jace, there is nothing you could say, short of ‘I killed your friend’, that would make me not want to date you anymore.”
“You might not feel that way after you hear this,” Jace cautioned him, his voice tight and unsure. “It’s, uh.” He broke off, pulling away from Alec and twisting his fingers together anxiously. “It’s just, not heard of in the Shadow World.”
“Being gay used to be unheard of in the Shadow World, too,” Alec said, rolling his eyes. “Trust me, Jace, whatever it is, I’m going to be fine with it.”
“Okay,” Jace agreed reluctantly. “If you say so.” He was clearly still unsure about it, and Alec was at a loss for what to do to make him feel better about the whole ordeal.
A sudden wave of guilt crashed over Alec, and he was suddenly filled with remorse. He hadn’t meant to force Jace into telling him something he wasn’t ready to speak about.
“You know you don’t have to tell me, right? Only if you want to. I’ll love you either way.” Alec sent Jace a reassuring look and gave one of his hands a little squeeze.
Jace chuckled, smiling a little. “Yeah, I know.” They were quiet for a few minutes, aside from the occasional cars driving past and the buzz of pedestrians’ chatter. Alec tried to communicate supportcarelove through their parabatai bond, resisting the urge to take Jace’s hand in his and kiss how much he loved him into the other boy’s palm. The ball was in Jace’s court now, and whatever he said, Alec knew it had to be his decision.
Finally, after a few long minutes, Jace inhaled shakily and began to speak. “So, uh, y-you know I’ve been with lots of people.”
Alec nodded minutely. Jace’s body count was impressive, and they both knew it, but it had never bothered him. Alec was the only one Jace had ever loved.
“Well, it’s helped me realise a few things about myself,” Jace continued. He took a deep breath, and then asked: “Do you know what it means to be asexual?”
Alec thought back to the LGBTQ+ articles he’d read online when he was first discovering he liked men, and he remembered one that had gone into detail about asexuality. “I think so,” he answered. “It means you’re not interested in sex?”
“Well, kind of,” Jace replied. “Not, uh, not exactly.”
“Okay,” Alec said, nodding. “Tell me more?” He kept his voice soft and free of judgement, hoping to communicate to Jace that he was listening and supportive and willing to accept whatever it was he had to say.
“See, asexuality is like, well, it’s kind of like a spectrum. Some people who identify as asexual or a form of it aren’t necessarily uninterested in sex. F-For instance, there’s a certain label called grey asexual, or grey ace, and it can mean, among other things, that there’s only certain parts of sex that you’re interested in. Like maybe you’re only interested in it when playing a certain role or in a certain position.”
Alec nodded, taking in the new information. “Yeah, okay, that makes sense.” Jace fell silent at that, avoiding Alec’s gaze. It took a few seconds for everything to click in Alec’s mind, but when it did, he grabbed Jace’s shoulder, searching for his golden eyes in the darkness of the roof. “Wait, are you trying to tell me that you’re grey ace?”
“Maybe?” Jace hedged, his voice small and vulnerable. “What if I was? Would you care?”
“Of course not!” Alec exclaimed. “The only thing I care about, Jace, is that you didn’t feel comfortable enough to tell me this sooner.” He wrapped his arms around his parabatai, one hand going to the nape of Jace’s neck to comb through the fine hairs there. “I don’t care about the sex, okay? I don’t care about...any of that. I care about you.”
Jace exhaled shakily, burying his face in Alec’s neck. “Good. I - thank you.”
Alec said nothing, pressing a light kiss to the top of Jace’s head instead. They swayed together for a few minutes, and Alec wondered how long Jace had been hiding that, waiting and hoping and praying that Alec wouldn’t turn him away because of it. The thought filled him with an overwhelming feeling of love for his parabatai, and he held Jace that much tighter for it.
“We should go inside,” Jace said eventually, sighing and pulling away. “They’ll be waiting for us.”
“Poker can wait ‘til next time,” Alec countered. “We should go inside - it’s fucking cold out here - but just...let’s ditch for the evening, yeah? I want to kiss you.”
“Yeah, well, what are you waiting for?” Jace teased, sidling closer.
Alec chuckled and obliged him, leaning forward and placing a soft, tender kiss on Jace’s lips. He rested his forehead against Jace’s, his fingers groping for his parabatai rune on instinct. “I hope you know,” he began, his voice thick with emotion, “that I’m in this for the long haul, Jace. I-I’m here for whatever life throws at both of us. You’ll never be alone. I’m here for it all.”
Jace nodded, too overcome with emotion to respond, and Alec tactfully ignored the tears that he felt dampening his jacket as they embraced one last time before heading to the door and towards home.
Eventually, Alec knew that they would have to talk more about it, establish limits and discuss what Jace was & wasn’t okay with, but for now, he just wanted to hold his parabatai and remind him that there was nothing wrong with him, and that Alec was all-in, no matter what, for as long as they both lived.

Hey there, so I really like history as a subject, and I'm pretty good at it. The thing is, I don't know what my career options would be if I studied it, or if I would be able to make money. My parents are heavily discouraging me from taking it as a major. As a 'historian' in training' what's your take? Thank you
Hi there! Sorry for the delay, ‘tis the hectic season…
Oh man, I have so many thoughts for you. Full disclosure: this is something I have worked on a LOT over the course of my graduate career both at my uni and on a national level; most of my advice, however, comes from a PhD candidate’s perspective and may not be directly helpful to an undergraduate, and I should also emphasize that everything I can say on this is very firmly based on the U.S. market only. That being said, a lot of what I can say can be universally applied, so here we go -
The number of history undergraduates in the U.S. has plummeted in the last decade or so, from it previously being one of the most popular majors. There are many interacting reasons for this: a changeover from older to younger, better-trained, energetic professors who draw in and retain students has been very slow to occur, partly because of a lack of a mandatory retirement age; the humanities have been systematically demonized and minimized in favor of the development of STEM subjects, to the occasional benefit of students of color and women but to the detriment of critical public discourse and historical perspective on current events; with many liberal arts colleges going under financially and the enormous expansion of academic bureaucracy everywhere, resources are definitely being diverted away from social and human studies towards fields which are perceived to pay better or perceived, as mentioned in the article above, as being more ‘practical.’ (We do need a ton more healthcare workers/specialists, but that’s a different conversation to have.) But now I feel like quoting a certain Jedi Master: everything your parents say is wrong. Let’s dive into why being a historian is a positive thing for you both as a person and as a professional -
You will be a good reader. As you learn to decipher documents and efficiently and thoroughly read secondary literature, you will develop a particular talent for understanding what is important about any piece of writing or evidence (and this can go for visual and aural evidence as well). This will serve you well in any position in which you are collecting/collating information and reporting to colleagues or superiors, and evaluating the worth of resources. Specific example - editorial staff at publishing houses either private or academic, magazines, etc.
You will be a good writer. This will get you a good job at tons of places; don’t underestimate it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been astonished (not in a punitive way, of course, but definitely with a sense of befuddlement) by how badly some of my Ivy-league students can write. Good writing is hard, good writing is rare, and good writing is a breath of fresh air to any employer who puts a high premium upon it in their staff. History in principle is the study of change; history in practice is presenting information in a logical, interesting, and persuasive manner. Any sort of institution which asks you to write reports, summaries, copy, etc. etc. will appreciate your skills.
You will be a good researcher. This sounds like a given, but it’s an underappreciated and vital skill. Historians work as consultants. Historians work in government - almost every department has an Office of the Historian - and in companies, writing company histories and maintaining institutional archives. A strong research profile will also serve you well if you want to go on to work in museum studies and in libraries public or private/academic. As a historian, you will know not just where to find information, but what questions you have to ask to get to the answer of how to tackle, deconstruct, and solve a problem. This is relevant to almost any career path.
You will provide perspective. Historians react to current events in newspapers and online - not just on politics, but culture as well (my favorite article of this week is about the historicity of The Aeronauts). Historians act as expert witnesses in court proceedings. Historians write books, good books, not just meant for academic audiences but for millions upon millions of readers who need thoughtful, intelligent respite from the present. Historians work for thinktanks, providing policy analysis and development (a colleague of mine is an expert on current events of war in Mali and works for multiple thinktanks and organizations because of it). Historians work for nonprofits or lobbying groups on issues of poverty, environmental safety, climate change, and minority and indigenous rights. In a world when Texas school textbooks push the states’ rights narrative, historians remind us that the Civil War was about slavery. Historians remind us that women and people of color have always existed. In this time and world where STEM subjects are (supposedly) flooding the job market, we need careful historical perspective more than ever. We need useful reactions to the 2016 election, to the immigration travesties on display at the southern border, to the strengthening of right-wing parties in Europe - and history classes, or thoughtfully historical classes on philosophy and political science, are one of the few places STEM and business students gain the basic ability to participate in those conversations. [One of my brightest and most wonderful students from last year, just to provide an anecdote, is an astrophysics major who complained to me in a friendly conversation this semester that she never got the chance to talk about ‘deep’ things anymore once she had passed through our uni’s centralized general curriculum, which has a heavy focus on humanities subjects.]
You will be an educator. Teaching is a profession which has myriad challenges in and of itself, but in my experience of working with educators there is a desperate need for secondary-school teachers in particular to have actual content training in history as opposed to simply being pushed into classrooms with degrees which focus only on pedagogical technique. If teaching is a vocation you are actually interested in, getting a history degree is not a bad place to start at all. And elementary/high schools aside, you will be teaching someone something in every interaction you have concerning your subject of choice. Social media is a really important venue now for historians to get their work out into the world and correct misconceptions in the public sphere, and is a place where you can hone a public and instructive voice. You could also be involved in educational policy, assessment/test development (my husband’s field, with a PhD in History from NYU), or educational activism.
If some of this sounds kind of woolly and abstract, that’s because it is. Putting yourself out there on the job market is literally a marketing game, and it can feel really silly to take your experience of 'Two years of being a Teaching Assistant for European History 1500-1750’ and mutate it to 'Facilitated group discussions, evaluated written work from students [clients], and ran content training sessions on complex subjects.’ But this sort of translation is just another skill - one that can be learned, improved, and manipulated to whatever situation you need it to fit.
Will you make money? That’s a question only you can answer, because only you know what you think is enough money. That being said, many of the types of careers I’ve mentioned already are not low-paying; in my experience expertise is, if you find the right workplace and the rewarding path, usually pretty well-remunerated.
Specific advice? Hone your craft. Curate an active public presence as a historian, an expert, a patient teacher, and as as person enthusiastic about your subject. Read everything and anything. Acknowledge and insist upon complexity, and celebrate it when you can.
And finally - will any of what I’ve said here make it easy? No, because no job search and no university experience is easy these days. It’s a crazy world and there are a lot of awful companies, bosses, and projects out there. But I do very firmly believe that you can find something, somewhere, that will suit your skills, and, hopefully, your passions too.
Resources for you: the American Historical Association has a breakdown of their skills-based approach to the job market, reports on the job market(s) for history PhDs collectively called ‘Where Historians Work,’ and a mentorship program, Career Contacts, which could connect you with professional historians in various workplaces. There is a very active community of historians on Twitter; search for #twitterstorians. For historians who identify as female, Women Also Know History is a newer site which collates #herstorian bios and publications to make it easier for journalists to contact them for expert opinions. ImaginePhD provides career development tools and exercises for graduate students, but could probably be applied to undergrads as well. The Gilder Lehrman Institute is one of the premier nonprofits which develops and promotes historical training for secondary school teachers and classroom resources (U.S. history only). Job listings are available via the AHA, the National Council on Public History, and the IHE, as well as the usual job sites. And there’s an awful lot more out there, of course - anyone who reads or reblogs this post is welcome to add field-specific or resource-specific info.
I hope this helps, Anon, or at least provides you with a way to argue in favor of it to your parents if it comes to that. Chin up!

How I Letterboxd #7: Cinemonster.
Hooptober’s head honcho opens up to Jack Moulton about his love for Texas-born horror director Tobe Hooper, the joys of running Letterboxd’s most beloved Hallowe’en community challenge, and the “terrifying, magical” experience of seeing Frankenstein at the age of four.
“You can’t spell October without Tobe.” —Cinemonster
Cinemonster, known to his family and friends as David Hood, is a restaurateur in Pittsburgh by day, and the head honcho of Hooptober by night. Now in its seventh year, the horror film challenge sees participants set their own 31-day viewing agenda of 31 films, curated according to a list of criteria set by its creator.

‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ (1974), directed by Tobe Hooper.
With over 5,000 films logged on Letterboxd and a growing collection of posters, DVDs, Blu-rays, laser discs and film memorabilia, Cinemonster is a literal monster of cinema. He has created more than 500 lists, including a ton of year, director, actor, actress, franchise and memoriam lists.
What brought you to Letterboxd? I found Letterboxd while I was doing a Google search for a horror film that I had forgotten the name of. I ran into a list that Hollie Horror had made and wound up starting a profile and it went from there. That would have been a little over seven years ago.
How freakin’ cool is last year’s Hallowe’en Easter egg with the dripping blood from our logo? [Pro members get this added to their pages by mentioning #horror in their bio.] I’m a fan.
Unfortunately I haven’t heard of a single one of your four profile favorites! What’s urging you to highlight these films? They are just lesser-seen and have something good or great about them. Eyeball is a great little underseen Umberto Lenzi film. Death Machines is an awkward, weird and wonderful film with kung fu and blood. Massacre at Central High is one of my favorite films and sadly lacking a disc release of any kind—anyone who has seen Heathers will recognize a couple of things if they watch it. Rituals is a criminally underseen stalked in the woods film from the ’70s.
In this this list description, you explain how the original Frankenstein (1931) hooked you into horror at four years old. Can you describe what you most remember about that life-changing experience? It was both magical and terrifying. The space, the creature, the little girl. I had trouble sleeping for weeks afterwards. No matter where I am in the world, if there is a screening of Frank, I’ll go. I watched most of the major universals by the time I was six or seven. I saw Alien and Jaws 2 with my folks and those stuck with me. Cable and a local UHF station showing Hammer films on Saturdays are what really allowed me to get sucked in.

‘Frankenstein’ (1931), directed by James Whale.
The horror films of 1980 and 1981 were the most impactful and are the ones that mean the most to me to this day; Fade to Black, Night School, Motel Hell, The Fog, Alligator, Altered States, Terror Train, Death Ship, Scanners, An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, The Funhouse, Dead & Buried, Hell Night, Wolfen, Ghost Story, The Pit and Evilspeak. I saw all of them five to ten-plus times on cable as a kid. They’re still all high on my list. I am glad that Fade to Black is on Shudder. People need to watch it. More relevant now than then.
What exactly provoked you to start Hooptober seven years ago? I moved into an old spooky house and had a backlog of Blu-rays to watch and the 4K of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was about to come out. I’d done some interactive stuff on Letterboxd previously and had a decent amount of people involved. I was also at a point in my life where 31 films in 31 days is tough, as it is for a lot of us now. So I thought ‘Why don’t I do something that starts a little early, clears some of my list out, and has some parameters that don’t feel like I am handing out an assignment?’ I grew up in Texas, Tobe [Hooper] is close to my heart, and with all the Hooper I owned and the 4K coming out, I decided to christen it with his name. You can’t spell October without Tobe.
What’s the most members that have participated in a Hooptober? The number of people who participated was a little more than I expected, but that wasn’t what I was surprised by. I never thought of it as a recurring event until I started to hear from people the following summer about ‘the next one’. I just kinda chuckled after about a dozen people had asked and I said out loud to no one, “I guess I’m doing another one of these”. We are well over 700 this year, and still climbing.

‘Fade to Black’ (1980), directed by Vernon Zimmerman.
Where do you get the ideas for the rules for films to consider watching? At this point, I look back at past years so that I don’t repeat myself. I look to the current year for inspiration. Is there a film from a sub-genre that was prominent? Was it a strong year for output from women, Mexico, Asia, Black filmmakers, something cultural, and so on? I may focus on effects creators, an actor or writer on a whim. I try to keep an eye out for blind spots I haven’t covered. Shudder, archive.org, the big streamers are all resources. Sadly, rarefilmm no longer exists.
In last year’s interview with Merry-Go-Round magazine, you mentioned plans to turn Hooptober into a film festival. How’s that going? In a post-pandemic world, how can we keep independent niche film festivals thriving? The world has not been agreeable, obviously. I’m not even sure how viable something like that will be next year. I’ve been taking a look at streaming options. Post-pandemic will require more creativity and outside-the-box thinking, and will probably continue to feed some drive-ins. Been a while since more than a handful of people wanted to put money into a drive-in, which is nice to see.
I’m going to do a tweet along to The Witch Who Came From the Sea in October, and I’ll give you an exclusive here: The George Romero Foundation and I are doing online Horror Trivia on October 11. I had been doing it live with them here in Pittsburgh until the pandemic.
Based on this year’s rules and conditions, if there was one essential you-can’t-miss film you could force all your participants to add to their challenge, which film would it be? Demons, Eve’s Bayou or The Witch Who Came From the Sea.

‘The Witch Who Came from the Sea’ (1976), directed by Matt Cimber.
What have been your own greatest film discoveries through your Hooptober adventures? A Tale of Two Sisters, I Drink Your Blood, Blood Diner, and though it is a bit of a cheat to list this one, The Amusement Park. It’s cheating because it didn’t exist as something that I or anyone else could have watched, prior to when I saw it.
Do you have any acclaimed horror movies still lingering in your list of shame? Eyes Without a Face, Upgrade, Cure and Scream 4.
Have you ever completed one of your own Hooptober challenges yet? Errrrrrrrrr, one. I’m on track this year.
What about the participants over the years—any Letterboxd friends you’ve made who would you like to give a shout-out to? Aaron, Sarah Jane and Chris Duck are people that I talk to outside of Letterboxd. There have been a few others over the years. Slappy McGee has helped me with Hooptober the last two years. They are great. Javo and David Lawrence are pretty great, too.
Before Hooptober, many of your lists invited discussion with your followers. In what ways is Letterboxd the ideal forum to foster a community of film fans? Fans exercise their fandom in so many ways. The platform is so flexible that it allows you to utilize it in a small and personal way, in a promotional way, or to dive into the community pool and see who’s out there that shares something with you or can show you something. The more people that we are exposed to and listen to, we are all the better for.
Which of your review—from any genre—are you proudest of? The Invisible Man or The Hustler, probably. I have a capsule of Hud that I like.
So, you’re the horror guy. Nobody is denying that. You are Cinemonster, after all. But when I look at your top movies list and see that Singin’ in the Rain is your all-time number one, I’ll need you to explain yourself. I go back and forth between that and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. They are 1A and 1B in some order. Singin’ in the Rain is a perfect film and the studio system at its best. I will ignore your implied insult. ;)

‘Fear of a Black Hat’ (1993), directed by Rusty Cundieff.
It’s true, even a horror aficionado needs some levity in their life. What other comedies pick you up from a dark place? Fear of a Black Hat always does the trick. Same with The Awful Truth, Murder by Death, Hollywood Shuffle, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Black Dynamite.
Who has been keeping you company during this tough year? I have watched thirteen Spike Lee films so far this year. I’ve taken a break the last few months, but I’ll probably knock out five or six more. With the exception of 25th Hour, everything is a revisit. It’s been a joy to go back through everything. Crooklyn is much stronger than I remembered, and Bamboozled just gets better and more impactful as time passes. I have loved Spike since the day I saw School Daze. His films have always connected with things that are important to me and to those that have been around me. Lee is still grossly under-appreciated as a narrative film director and a documentarian.
We’re bowing down to your epic Blu-ray and DVD collection. Which ones are your most prized possessions? Make us jealous. I have an Anchor Bay DVD of Dawn of the Dead signed by the cast and George A. Romero, a steelbook of Battle Royale, the first Slumber Party Massacre set before they had to reprint the box, the original Star Wars trilogy on Blu. I’m sure there are things I’m not thinking of. I have a lot of out-of-print and laser-only stuff. I’ll never get rid of my Holy Grail, Ghostbusters and Akira Criterion laser discs.

A selection of Cinemonster’s signed memorabilia.
I have a copy of Painting with Light signed by John Alton, John Waters and Steven Soderbergh I’ll send you a picture of. I used to collect movie posters, and I have the original Revenge of the Jedi one-sheet and the Drew Struzan Squirm poster. I do love those.
From your top directors list, let’s put one horror director on a pedestal. Who does the genre better than anyone else and why? George. They’re always topical, intelligent, thoughtful, personal and sometimes prescient. At their best they hold up both a mirror and a crystal ball. He was writing found-footage scripts in the early 70s, for god’s sake. Tobe is grossly under-appreciated. James Whale and Mario Bava could scare you in so many ways.
So, thinking beyond Ari Aster, Robert Eggers and Jordan Peele, which up-and-coming horror directors are you most excited about? Issa López, Gigi Saúl Guerrero, Benson and Moorhead, Shinichiro Ueda, Na Hong-jin, Julia Ducournau, Nia DaCosta, Jeremy Gardner and Leigh Whannell.
The 2010s were a great decade for horror. We have more money on-screen, moving away from the low-budget films of the 2000s. Which favorite horror film of the last decade inspired you the most? Get Out. What Jordan did for generations to come is unmatched in this century.

Chucky from ‘Child’s Play’ (1988).
Which probably-too-long horror franchise gets too much flak and is top-to-bottom a great time? Child’s Play. Chucky has always been treated generally as second tier. [That franchise] has tried a lot of interesting and out-there things during its lifespan that had no business working, but did.
I know it’s been a slow year but you haven’t logged many 2020 movies yet! Which is your most anticipated horror movie of 2020 or 2021? Peninsula, for sure; I love Train to Busan. Then Candyman, The Dark and the Wicked, Grizzly II: Revenge, Bad Hair, #Alive, After Midnight, The Platform, Bulbbul, Underwater, Shirley and Swallow.
