Because I just did a Constant Gardener reread I also have to note that le Carré remains incredibly good both at writing people getting the ever-living shit kicked out of them - in all its brutal bewildering unglamorous physicality - and at writing apolitical (at least in their own minds) servants of the state developing ideological convictions:
