Kate laughed softly. Yelena, in turn, glared.

“Why do you find this hat amusing?”

 She understood the Santa mythology well enough, even if she herself had never celebrated Christmas in the typical way. Kate had believed in Santa, however, as a child, so maybe that was why she found it funny when she dropped a Santa hat on Yelena’s head. 

“Because you could kill me in a heartbeat and I just put a Santa hat on your head,” Kate pointed out. “You gotta appreciate the little things.”

Yelena rolled her eyes, but didn’t take the hat off.  When she didn’t speak, Kate continued.

“I’m dying to see which one of them manages to pop the question first.” She looked towards the kitchen, where Natasha and Clint were baking. “I think it’ll be Natasha. It doesn’t matter if Clint’s been with her a billion years, he’s nervous.” 

“Of course it’ll be Natasha,” she said knowingly. “Barton doesn’t have the guts.”

Just in that moment, Clint popped his head out of the kitchen. 

“What’s going on?” he asked. “Hey, nice hat.”

Yelena then did take the hat off and tossed it at Clint. He caught it without flinching. 

“Secret Santa things,” Kate said, bursting into giggles. Yelena wondered then what would happen first: a) Natasha proposing b) Barton getting the guts and proposing or c) Kate Bishop ruining the whole thing with her big mouth.

Gruß vom Krampus! 

December 5th is Krampusnacht, and I've done some pieces related to that over the years. This year I decided to update my depictions of Stan and Ford in the older two pieces (from 2016 and 2017 respectively), and to put the three all together. The original piece from 2016 was done for the 2017 Hunkles calendar (December of course), and the sequel was done for New Years the following year, with the final pic in the sequence appearing in Dec. 2020.

As I said in the original post, my version of the Krampus is based on looking at traditional folk costumes actually worn by krampus figures in Austria for the Krampusnacht festival.

And finally, just to keep it all in one place: after posting the 2020 piece, I got an ask about the little collection of Pines dolls that hang off of Krampus's basket in the second pic, and that Stan is holding in the last pic. I went into a long explanation (including an overview of the Krampus tradition and celebrations), so I'll put it below a cut here:

Okay so like… the explanation is probably kind of dumb.  And it’s me making stuff up, rather than relying completely on the actual folklore.

So the Krampus figure is actually a collection of figures from Central Europe, particularly in the Alps, and the specific traditions associated with the Krampus can vary from region to region and town to town.  Thus, while a set of the Krampus tropes have kind of been exported and caught on in popular culture, that pop culture figure now only resembles *some* Krampus traditions.  I don’t think it’s accurate to talk about “a” Krampus or “the” Krampus, exactly, because of that regional variation.  It’s also worth noting that Krampus celebrations are very much alive in various towns in the Alps.

Generally speaking, though, Krampus is a “wild man” figure, often with a demonic face (mask), a furry body, and goat-like features (especially horns). There are some theories that the basic figure itself is pre-Christian (like a lot of the wild-man traditions of Central and Northern Europe).  (I personally think that’s pretty plausible, given the range of costumes we see.)

After the advent of Christianity, though, the Krampus became associated with “the devil” or demonic figures.  And eventually, in a lot of traditions within the Central European mountain area, Krampus got paired with St. Nicholas, as a kind of tag-team.  St. Nicholas in those traditions is almost certainly one of the origins of Santa Claus, in that he rewards well-behaved children with presents.  (But, traditionally he dresses like a bishop, and not in the outfit that a lot of Americans are familiar with.)  The 6th of December is the Feast of St. Nicholas, so Krampusnacht (”Krampus night”) is the 5th of December.  And Krampus acts as the opposite of St. Nicholas – if presents are a means of encouraging good behavior, then Krampus is the threat used to discourage bad behavior.

So, some of the accreted trappings of the Krampus are a whip and a bundle of birch branches, for beating children / people, and a basket that he carries on his back, into which he puts the naughty children he finds, to carry them off for punishment.  (Obviously, the message there is: don’t be naughty or the Krampus will get you.)  A number of the Krampusnacht traditions involve men costumed as Krampus running wild through the streets, threatening people with their birch branches or whips and so on, making noise (thus all of the bells worn around the neck) and kind of terrorizing people (not just kids), as a set-up for St. Nicholas to come in the next day and reassert order.  (Sometimes it’s only “terrorizing” in an “all in good fun” sense, similar to Halloween scariness; but apparently in some towns, it can get kind of rough.)

So with all of that background… I was originally just looking for a sort of “crytpid” or monster for Stan and Ford to be fighting, with a December theme, for that 2017 calendar piece.  They are encountering more of a magical, “real monster” version (rather than the folkloric ritual version), and therefore I took some liberties with the idea, even though I incorporated a lot of design elements from a variety of real Krampus costumes.

I didn’t want to put any actual children into Krampus’s basket for Ford and Stan to rescue, though (in the original calendar piece, they wouldn’t have been that visible).  But when I did the second piece, I included the doll versions of the four Pines, hanging from Krampus’s basket, as a sort of… symbolic magical threat, an expression of the idea that the Pines are its supernatural targets.  The dolls act as kind of representations of Krampus’s targets, and I also thought of them, in that sense, as a darker reflection of the St. Nicholas gift-giving tradition (still toys, but toys with a sinister meaning). If Krampus was a “real” supernatural being that goes around punishing the “naughty” or “wicked”… then what is its definition of “wicked”, and would it be a fair one, or unfair? 

In this scenario, Stan and Ford are not in the mood to debate with it over whether it is fair to take them to task for being “naughty”, but they are DEFINITELY not going to stand for the idea that the Krampus might go after Dipper and Mabel, so – time to take it down!

Anyway, for more about the actual Krampus, I recommend taking a look at the Krampus article on Wikipedia, or listening to this excellent podcast (which I was listening to as I finished the piece the other day; am very interested in getting that guy’s book!).

Hello! I'm currently trying to find every variation and reference to the "do you recall" poem within the game. Needless to say, this is difficult work especially because some may be hidden in the different ambitions or in non-repeatable stories that I already passed up. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be much appreciated, as would sharing screenshots of text I'm unable to access. I'm pretty far down Hearts desire and have completed Seeking on a previous account but didn't get screenshots, so anything from other ambitions or SMEN would be helpful.

Live Reading: The Salt Miracles

I am only doing this for The Salt Miracles and not the other stories in The Winter Spirits because it's too much effort and I'm already going insane. I'm also going in 100% blind, I have absolutely no idea what it's about or whose perspective it's following, but my lord am I nervous.

I haven't even started yet but I just realised I've been calling it The Salt Mines by accident and put it in a twitter post oops-

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was mentioned and now I'm 1.) thinking about tlfop again, and 2.) am fairly certain that this story takes place not far from the events of tlfop, because the first Sherlock Holmes book was published in 1887 and he references them as being "new:

I can finally use my insanely eurocentric art history class notes to explain the imagery of what Flint describes in Ezekiel's angels; each of the four creature's heads is representative of the four apostles who wrote the bible, and that coupled with the biblically accurate angels coming down from on high are clear indicators of the second coming in art, meaning the previous priest was preaching the end of days to these people

I've always been such a sucker for Catholicism in gothic media, especially when it comes to imagery, so this all is right up my alley

Hmm.

Fliny's whole color metaphor for logic + Thaniel's synesthesia sounds like another essay for me

The optimism of Flint and the pilgrims is really going to make the horror aspect of this all hit so hard I'm excited

On that note, I love how the stones that looked like beehives so readily became cairns as the tone got darker

It took this short story for me to realise that that scene in twofs where Mori is giving his side of the argument with the priest in the future where he actually did go to the wedding, he's arguing about the story of Lot, which likely was derivative of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Wonder why that would come up. Hmm. A mystery.

Day 4 | Advent Calendar Masterlist 🎄

Lying in bed with Kate snuggled warmly against you was something you'd never get over, the way her body seemed to fit perfectly with yours always brought a sense of home to you. Even though you were loving every second of hearing Kate's soft and adorable snores, you could see flakes of snow falling from the crack in the curtains. A smile tugged at your lips with Christmas being one of your favorite holidays, you couldn't wait to be outside in the snow. Gently you slipped out from under Kate, replacing your body with your pillow careful not to wake her as you crept around the apartment grabbing your coat. 

The fresh smell of cold air oddly made you feel warm as you took the first steps outside with fresh snow between your toes, you didn't mind so much that you couldn't find your slippers. Spinning around as snowflakes freely fell from the sky, Kate's raspy morning voice startled you. 

"Baby, where the hell are your slippers?!" She spoke with concern that your feet would freeze. "Shhh" you hushed with a finger to your lips, "come here" you added with now open arms. Kate shook her head and quickly headed back inside where it was warm, grabbing your slippers that were left by the sofa last night after watching cheesy Christmas films on Netflix. "Put your slippers one because I'm not taking you the emergency room when your toes go black" she returned with your Christmas themed slippers in hand, but you were too distracted by making a snow angel to even look in her direction. 

"Come make snow angels with me!" You smiled as you continued moving your arms up and down and your legs side to side, "you're crazy!" Kate giggled as she walked over to you and laid down in the snow beside you, "please put your slippers on" she begged as you turned to face her. You smiled and sat up, taking the slippers from her hands and putting them on. 

"Happy?" You smiled as you leant over to her, capturing her lips with yours, "now I am" she smiled against your lips. Her eyes sparkled as snowflakes landed in her hair, a beauty so strong you couldn't help but admire her as she made her own snow angel next to yours. Kate blushed when she noticed you couldn't keep your eyes off her, smiling once more to hide the redness in her cheeks.

 "SNOWBALL FIGHT!" You called as you made a snow ball and threw it gently at Kate, "Really?! I wasn't even ready!" She jumped up with a wide smile. "You're an avenger, aren't you supposed to be ready at all times?" you chuckled before balling up another snowball. "Careful what you say baby" Kate replied as she kneeled down and grabbed a hand full of snow. 

The snowball fight was full of laughter as you both tried to dodge each other by hiding behind cars parked on the street, trees and light posts but by the end, you both were covered in snow and crying of laughter. "You really do have great aim!" You walked over to Kate with your hands up in defeat, "And to think I was going easy on you" she smirked, dropping her last snowball to the ground. "You call that easy?!" You cocked a brow, walking closer to her as your hands landed on her hips. 

"I don't want to hurt your feelings" Kate playfully pouted as she wrapped her arms around the back of your neck. Snowflakes continued to fall freely from the sky, covering the pair of you tiny ice chips as you looked into her eyes, "I think you just don't want to admit defeat" you replied cheekily, Kate chuckled, "shut up and kiss me" she said, her eyes falling to your lips. 

"Admit defeat" you smirked. "Fine, I'll do it myself, because it's cold as shit out here" Kate lent in, kissing you so softly that you almost felt the snowflakes falling into your hair. As she pulled away you couldn't help but pull her back in, "More" you mumbled before kissing her once more. 

"I admit it" Kate smiled, "you won, now can we please go inside?" She added.

"One more, please?" You smirked knowing she couldn't say no to how adorable you looked.

Waking up to the sun shining through the blinds, you turn around to find Bishop sound asleep. His face was relaxed as he took even breaths.

You wanted to reach your hand out and touch his face, but you didn't; he needed all the sleep he could get after such a long time from home.

Admiring his beauty for a few more minutes before you got up, trying not to wake him on the way to the kitchen.

Deciding to make some breakfast as he most likely hadn't had a good breakfast in a long time, and you were also quite hungry after your little... adventure last night.

Making some simple scrambled eggs and bacon with toast, you heard footsteps approaching the kitchen. It was Bishop, and you could tell that Bodhi was on his way to, the sound of the tag on his collar jingled lightly.

You turned towards the door to greet them both. “I see you two are getting along.” Bishop entered the kitchen with Bodhi bouncing along right beside him.

“I was hoping to find my beautiful wife in bed with me, but instead, I was greeted by this guy.”

“Woof.”

“Good morning. How did you sleep, babe?”

Bishop came to your side and kissed you on the cheek. “Like a baby.”

Traveling your hands from his naked chest till you wrapped your hands around his neck as he went around your waist. “I made you breakfast.”

“I would rather you stayed in bed so I could have you for breakfast.” Leaning his head down to your neck and leaving kisses across the skin there.

You closed your eyes for a second, enjoying the feeling of his lips on your skin, but after a while, you pulled him away.

“As much as I would love for this to continue, Bishop, we should eat something! I'm pretty sure both of us are pretty hungry after our... activities from last night.”

He leaned his head on your shoulder, letting out an annoyed groan. “But I'm having you later.”

Bishop ate his full plate of breakfast in a matter of seconds. “Jesus, slow down, you are going to choke.” “This is the best breakfast I've had.” “It's just eggs and bacon...” “It's the best eggs and bacon in the whole of Santo Padre.” Rolling your eyes at him. He could be a bit dramatic sometimes.

You already decided to give him one of his Christmas presents a little bit earlier, and you were so nervous.

“Uh... Bishop... I want to give you one of your presents now.”

“Now?”

“Yes, now! Just wait here.”

You got up to retrieve the gift from its hiding spot, your hands shaking slightly as you walked back to where he was sat.

Looking down at the wrapped gift in your hand. You were so nervous and scared about what was going to happen and so excited at the same time. Lifting your head and finding his eyes. He was waiting for you to give him the gift.

“Here.”

You sat down in your chair again, bouncing your leg up and down as he unwrapped the paper and took the lid of the box.

He held up his gift, his brows furrowed in confusion at first until it clicked in his head at what he was looking at, and then you could see his face light up.

“Your pregnant?!”

Nodding your head, yes.

“Are you serious?!”

“Yes, this is not a joke. We are having a baby Bishop.”

“We are having a baby...” “WE ARE HAVING A BABY!” He screamed at the top of his lungs, jumping up from his chair and coming to your side and pulling you up from the chair in a hug.

Grabbing the side of your face with his hands as you leaned your forehead on his.

“You just made me the happiest man in the world,” he whispered as he laid one hand on your stomach that was carrying his unborn child.

Bodhi got up from his place on the floor, getting excited about the commotion that was happening, and he wanted to get in on the fun.

You picked him up from the floor, holding him between you and Bishop, as he licked both of your faces.

“And you let me do all those things to you last night while you were carrying my child...?” You both burst into laughter at that.

This was all Bishop needed in his life. This was what he would kill and die for. His family. His child, his beautiful, caring wife, and we can't forget about Bodhi either, of course.
