the true original name of the aether breed has long been lost to time.
it died with those of their civilization that remained on the ground. the name "Aether", adopted by the long distant descendants of the ship's original crew and survivors of what remains of their species, did not originate as their race's name but instead as a shortening of the original occupants of the station's job title- Aethernauts.

Pocket Guide to Intercosmic Travel
So, you've just become aware of the multiverse! Eternity, reality, omnicosm– no matter what you call the largest unit of existence that supersedes mortal notions of time and space, you're going to need to reframe your perspective on it. Here's a handy guide to get you started!
Multiversal Structure
The multiverse is composed of two aspects: universes (aka cosmoses or yggdrasili) and nullspace (aka aether or ginnungagap).
Universes
A natural-born universe, also called a “cosmos” or “yggdrasil,” originates as a single infinite point containing all of the spacetime and mass-energy of its existence in compressed form. This is called a “seed singularity” or just a “seedling”: a singularity of infinite potential. This seedling sprouts infinitely-branching possible spacetimes after initial expansion; any possible split fork moment in probability down to the quantum level creates a new timeline (or “branch”) extending off of the previous one.
Once a universe has grown out its branches all the way to the very end, after entropy has rendered every single worldline into a uniform smear of cold, stable, subatomic matter, gravitational force is absolutely uniform across the entirety of spacetime. This causes the ends of the branches to collapse into new seed singularities and pinch off, drifting free through nullspace until accumulated exposure to the primordial background energy triggers germination through quantum flux. Because time and causality don't apply outside the spacetime of a universe, the reproductive cycles of universes form an infinite chain of reincarnation.
Pseudocosms
A pseudocosm or pseudoverse, colloquially called a “Haven,” is an artificial cosmos created by one or more godlike hyperichal beings. Usually created by heavily altering a harvested seedling, these constructs often defy standard universal structure, existing in stable localized monocausality with deliberately maintained (cyclical) entropy. They exist effectively as sandboxes for the transcendent hyperichals, allowing them to “play god.”
Nullspace
Nullspace, also called the “aether” or “ginnungagap,” is the “space” in which universes exist, though it is impossible to actually conceptualize as a “space” because it doesn't technically exist. Nullspace is both infinite and imaginary, meaning that there is no relative position in it: every cosmos exists both adjacent to and far apart from each other. Nullspace is uniformly suffused with a unique form of energy, called primordial or aethereal energy, which has no carrier particle and contains infinite potential. This infinite raw energy is thought to be the driving force of the quantum vacuum fluctuations in each causal universe, which also serves to trigger singularity expansion in newborn universes.
Intercosmic Travel
When an object native to a cosmos exits its branch without a protective pocket of spacetime, its waveform collapses. An object removed from its original spacetime becomes detached from its native past, future, and alternate instances (its “worldline”), inhabiting a new causal lineage tethered to itself alone. When sapient beings accomplish this (except in the case of hyperichal transcendence), their new causal lineage is often called a “personal timeline” or, more succinctly, “lifeline.” Material beings who are capable of intercosmic travel are called, among other things: “Travellers,” “aethernauts,” or “planeswalkers.” Non-material, transcendent beings who have converted themselves to a causality-free post-cosmic format and, effectively, achieved “godhood” are called hyperichals, or simply “Drifters.”
Hyperichals
Hyperichals are sapient beings who have converted themselves into stable, complex superstring resonance patterns which exist outside the spatiotemporal limits of their cosmos of origin. They have attained final and complete knowledge of physics, and have total mastery over the workings of reality through post-singularity thaumatech. This allows them to not only travel freely across the multiverse, but control the structure of reality itself. It is the most literal form of godhood there is; in fact, most universes with known gods are actually the subjects of hyperichal influence.
Cosmography
The best system yet conceived for cartographing specific instants in a given universe is that of the Cosmos Index in the Gardener's Eternal Archive; available in physical, metaphysical, digital, gravirtual, hyperwave, psychonic, superstring compact resonance, and other formats for convenience. Its method is quite similar to that of the hypothetical Library of Babel: a primary starting point followed by a long string of increasingly specific divergence points in time and space. The end result is that the full address of any point in the multiverse is a large paragraph of absolutely eye-watering numerical gibberish, punctuated by the occasional semicolon. Fortunately, the index includes a spot for a cosmic prime-branch's colloquial names as well, making things easier for all Travellers. This is also useful for including pseudocosms, such as the notorious realm of “Crundle.”
A parallel to this project is the Traveller Index, which functions essentially as a “multiverse phonebook” - it is a compendium of all known beings who are capable of intercosmic travel. Each entry consists of a being’s preferred identity, cosmos and specific instant of origin, and a superstring code –much like a hyperichal consciousness, a “superstring code” is a sub-quantum resonance pattern unique to each individual Traveller’s “lifeline.” There are technically infinite entries in the full Index, but its natural form exists in a superimposed state unbound by time or space. When it is localized for active reference, it can have anywhere from a dozen entries to trillions of entries.

Entry Four: Horn of Jurgen Windcaller
Alright, feet, time to get up and get a move on! Upon waking up, there was a scrap of paper flying about in the wind. After looking like an idiot for five minutes, I finally caught ahold of it. It looked to be a page from a journal detailing something called Aethernautics. I would have to look into this later. My pile of quests were starting to pile up and I had no idea when I'd be able to deal with it all.
We had gotten back to Riften a few hours later and I was stopped by a courier, who gave me three letters. One from a Mandyn Hlaalu requiring my assistance in Riverwood. The second from Jarl Siddgeir of Falkreath, asking for my aid. And the last was an unsigned letter asking for me in Winterhold. Looks like word spreads quickly of my title of Dragonborn.
Anyway, back to the task at hand. My party and I spoke with the carriage driver and made our way over to Morthal, as it seemed to be close to Ustengrav. Inside were your typical bandits and draugr. The bandits and necromancers were easily overwhelmed by the undead, serves them right, honestly.
Continuing through Ustengrav, there was a familiar wall structure inside with the dragon tongue written on it. I absorbed the knowledge of the word of power, like I have done in the past and we went along on our journey.
Tumblr media
There was some sort of speed puzzle across the bridge. Seemed simple enough, thanks to my Whirlwind Sprint shout. As I passed each of the stones, they glowed a brilliant red color. Just as I ran through the last stone, I shouted and made it through the gates before they closed. When finally on the other side, all three gates opened back up to allow my companions a way through.
We were finally at the end when we found no horn, but a sword. My party grumbled about stinking of draugr for days and no horn to show for it. I could hardly blame them, as I was also peeved at the absence of the Horn.
Tumblr media
In the palm of the hand was a note from a mysterious writer, claiming to have the Horn. It would take all of my power to not shove my swords into the spine of whoever made us waste all this time.
Tumblr media
With our mood severely dampened, we made our way back over to Riverwood, like the note directed. On our way to the inn, we were stopped by two cultists who attacked us.
Tumblr media
Once dead, I looted their corpse and found a note, asking for my death in the name of their leader, Miraak.
Tumblr media
Apparently, they came from a place called Solstheim, which is an island north of Morrowind, if I recall correctly. I would have to speak to the captain of this Northern Maiden and find out more later. After all, I'm already on a quest. I don't need to juggle this on top of the journey I'm already on.
Inside the Sleeping Giant Inn, I spoke with the innkeeper, asking for the attic room as discussed in the note. Apparently, there was no attic room, which made my blood boil even more. Was this "friend" just here to waste my time?
In the room directed to me, the innkeeper had followed me inside. Turns out, she was the "friend" discussed in the note. I reached for my blade, but stopped. What good would come of killing her? She clearly has information I need and she could prove useful.
She told me to follow her, then close the door. After following her directions, she open a secret passage being a wardrobe. Clever, yet paranoid. I shook my head and followed her down the steps.
Tumblr media
Once down the steps, that was when she dropped important information onto me. Not only were dragons returning, they were coming back to life. At first, it seemed like a silly idea. But, she explained to me that she was looking at, now empty, dragon burial sites. What other answer would explain their burial sites being empty?
She said our next stop was Kynesgrove, but I had to finally deliver the Horn to the Greybeards. After all, they were my teachers. They were the ones who could teach me more about my abilities. So they were of higher importance to me.
The journey was long, but we had finally made it back to High Hrothgar. Our feet were killing us after the long trek up the mountain again. When inside, I gave the Horn back to the Greybeards. Gods only know what they were going to do with it.
Tumblr media
They taught me the final word of power: Dah, for my Unrelenting Force shout. I knew this would come in handy and would be a go-to in my arsenal. Arngier then told me they would speak to me in the dragon tongue.
Tumblr media
They did as they said and once done, they seemed surprised. Arngier mentioned that not many could take the combined force of their voices. As for why they'd shout at me, thinking it would kill or injure me, I have no clue. Now I was officially Dragonborn in the eyes of the Greybeards.
Now to prove it to Delphine....
The journey to Kynesgrove was a long one. We had made our way back to Riften and caught a carriage over to Windhelm as that was the closest city to the small village.
Once there, there was a familiar sight. A black and red dragon overhead. I got flashes of the sight at Helgen and I grew worried. Was this dragon going to burn down this village too?
Tumblr media
I finally caught up with Delphine and the two of us witnessed the dark dragon raise another dragon from the dead. Great! A necromancer dragon! All we needed....
Tumblr media
Sahloknir was the dragon's name, according to the other dragon. We had to kill it before it lay waste to the village below. I rushed out and began attacking it, as the other dragon flew off. Delphine and my party were right at my heels as my blade made contact with the dragon. It had almost slaughtered us, but we were able to put the flying lizard down, hopefully for good.
Upon its death, I sucked up its soul, with Delphine standing there with her mouth agape. She was finally ready to answer all my questions.
Apparently, she was one of the last members of the Blades still alive. I should have guessed, due to all the Akaviri weapons in her hidden room. And a copy of The Rise and Fall of the Blades on the small table. Now that I'm thinking about it, it was obvious from the start.
Her theory was that the Thalmor were behind the dragons coming back. She seemed so sure of it, but I wasn't really following. It would make no sense as there was no proof. Even Xelzaz agreed. This led her to her next task.
We had to get inside the Thalmor Embassy. How we'd do that is a mystery to me, but she said she'd get in under control. She just needed time.
Tumblr media
Time was something I've wanted since I was approached by the Companions woman. I needed this time to get stronger and face these dragons. I'm sure Delphine would send word for me once she was ready. So until then, my next priority was the Companions. Something told me that they'd be my way of getting physically stronger.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Author's Note: Hello everyone! Thanks for reading, I greatly appreciate those who do! This one was a small one due to being the conclusion of Act 1 of the Main Quest. As mentioned above, I will be completing the Companions questline next!
Also, sorry for my lack of posting the last two days. Tuesday was just an off day for me. And Wednesday was my partner's birthday, so we went out and celebrated.

Still very proud I:
- Among others I felt were important to add to what the core established, made it so we added Carmilla to Aether the moment I got the chance to be a dev in The Aethernaut Collection (and thanks to her author for the great work!)
- Came up with the fake name "Millicent Karr" for her in a one-shot I ran, which is very suspect (Millicent Karr, Karr Millicent, Karr Mille, Carmilla) and thus totally on brand for Countess Mircalla "Carmilla" Von Karstein.
...I like to think I was a good fit and did good work developing for Aether books.

*slams face on the doorframe when running back in the room* HI CAN WE CONTINUE THE PREVIOUS CONVERSATION? Please. Humor theory is fascinating to me. If not ignore this and go listen to Minnie The Moocher from Oingo Boingo. It's a good cover.
What you were taking about is self referential humor. A running gag or acknowledgement of a prior event is vastly different reference humor. In It's Time For The Refill Station says "watchers are wannabees." as a direct reference to another franchise. Mephone talks about leaving a knife behind referring to season 2 of the franchise. Only one of those requires knowledge of another outside piece of media. For someone who only would know, let's say Inanimate insanity, only one of those would land properly. It's time for the compensates for the deficiency by having the statement be so off the cuff it becomes ludicrous. In inanimate Insanity the compensation is that everyone who doesn't understand guesses he is taking about killing people. Misfortune humor mixed with taboo. In both of these there is a backup cushion. If the joke doesn't land one way it could the next. Having someone say "this is just like among us" only remains as funny as among us is relevant. Replace the game with bio-mutant and then the humor becomes irrelevant without it's cushion. The structure is rigid and needs padding to take off and familiarity to land. The more types of humor you can pack into a single joke, the better. Simply saying "chao from sonic" will not get me to laugh. EEE made an episode where the punchline was raising them was stupid and they were all dying. Sound a bit familiar? II did this same plotline with it's own little critters. You don't need familiarity with monster raising or sims in general to appreciate the plotline or it's jokes. Many of them rely on misfortune humor, absurdism, misdirection and...
I started to rant for thirty minutes. Sorry.
Very true!! Surprisingly not a lot of these apply to me, though that may be because I am what one would describe as "easily pleased" (just saying "chao from sonic" would in fact get me to laugh). It's true though that a good quality joke needs some effort behind it besides just "hey look! Funny reference", and lots of writers can forget that since they mostly put in a joke for the sake of a joke. And dw about ranting, I enjoy rambling!

no but seriously. can you hear how slowing this down ca. 60% would make a great waltz
(album lives rent-free in my head in general. I've already got the whole fictional videogame to it half-planned out and then second-order fanfiction to that including repurposing an OC from the 00s and —)
anyone else with a strange hankering for accordion waltz covers of 2010s chiptunes or is it just me?

Look, I'm not perfect. I'm not the best. My self-esteem never did well as far as I can remember, but in the last period it fell off badly and hasn't recovered yet.
Still, sometimes I can cling to stuff. My trust in my professional skills as both writer and dev... isn't doing great.
But I know for a fact Cyclops's Cave gets consistently praised for its style, ideas, and "the strongest crunch of all They Came From". I know for a fact that Witchford Academy refines that even further, no matter what. People will adore to combine concepts, Tropes, and Cinematics of both.
I know the characters in The Aethernaut Collection are clean as hell, and that everything the Aether Companion introduces is sharp and cool.
I know the God Companion is so packed with content it's a miracle its small frame can hold all the awesomeness in.
I know I work so hard on stuff. And that at least a bit of that I can't doubt.

Dwemeri Aethernaut, weapons artificer Szard. He maintains and manufactures Nzhavananear's cannons and its crew's harquebuses. Also, he likes to change the color of the beads in his beard often. One day they'll be white, the next they might be pink. You can usually identify him by his hat though, he is the only crew member to wear one traditional style.
