Mha Guys And Their Love Languages Pt.1
———————————————————
Featuirng: Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, Shoto Todoroki, Eijirou Kirishima, Keigo Takami (Hawks), Shouta Aizawa! —————————————————————————————
Tumblr media
I.Midoriya: •Words Of Affirmation•
he loves encouraging and motivating others so it’s no surprise he gets all warm and fuzzy inside when the roles are reversed and your the one peppering him with motivational words letting him know what a good job he’s doing even if it’s something small, whisper sweet nothings in his ear and you have this boy on his knees. after all he’s been through with being told he’ll never make it as a hero being quirkless and what not having someone by his side to tell him that he is worthy and can do it makes his heart swell.
Tumblr media
K.Bakugo: •Acts Of Service• bakugo isn’t the best at expressing himself verbally so he shows you he cares instead, you need help with dishes? he might fake pout and say your more than capable of doing it yourself but helps you with relatively no complaints, left your bag at home? he’s already dashing down the block . in turn he likes when you reciprocate the same for him wether it’s helping him train, or carrying his bag for him when his muscles get tired.
Tumblr media
S.Todoroki: •Quality Time•
coming from a family as broken as his he’d never really experienced spending time with people he’d cared about other than his classmates so when you waltzed into his life he’d like to spend every moment possible doing stuff with you wether it’s watching TV, feeding the ducks at the lake, or eating takoyaki he’s just happy to bask in your presence and enjoy each others company.
Tumblr media
E.Kirishima: •Acts Of Service• he’s a high believer in chivalry so it makes sense that in a relationship he tries to be the most chivalrous of them all! opening doors, fetching you things, getting stuff off the top shelf for you this man does.it.all! though in turn he loves it when you do the same for him, prepared to be called ‘so manly’ regardless of your gender.
Tumblr media
K.Takami: •Quality Time• let’s face it, being a pro hero is stressful especially if you’re number 2, so after long hours of patrolling keigo thinks there's nothing better than spending quality time with his partner. with you his facade can drop and he can just be and he adores that most, so expect a lot of lazy days in bed when he’s not on duty and lounging around his hero agency -when he has a rare break- playing a dumb mobile game together.
Tumblr media
S.Aizawa: •Quality Time• sleepy boy just lovessss spending time with his S/O and what better way than napping with him after a long day of teaching? or perhaps indulging in book together you nestled in his lap like a cat. quality time together is uhow he shows he cares even if he may be away teaching during the day, when he comes home for the night he’s all yours! (if he doesn’t fall asleep right away that is!

Genshin Men: How They Show Affection (Cyno, Thoma, Kaeya)
Mobile sucks so bad for trying to find gifs for some characters I said fuck it and used still images instead. Anyway, enjoy!
Tumblr media
Cyno:
His affection primarily comes in the form of spending time with you. As the General Mahamatra, he doesn’t have a lot of spare time. It’s significant that what little free time he does have, he spends it with you without a second thought.
He doesn’t like going out too much; his job keeps him constantly moving, and being the General Mahamatra he always has a target on his back. Cyno likes to finally slow down when he’s with you. This isn’t to say he wouldn’t take you to get a nice dinner or anything, but he is at his happiest when it’s just you and him.
He will teach you how to play Genius Invocation TCG, but he will always go easy on you when you play, admiring how your face lights up when you win. He also wants an excuse to show off the card art he commissioned from Albedo
On the rare occasion that he has more downtime than usual and he’s feeling particularly affectionate, his favorite thing to do is just lie down and hold you for hours on end
This seems like a blessing; his warm, strong arms wrapped around you, the comforting rhythm of his heartbeat in your ear, his lips occasionally ghosting over your exposed skin….that is, until he breaks out his jokes
For Cyno, this is the perfect opportunity to try out some new material, and you’re his unwilling audience
Cyno: I have a joke that I would like to tell you, (Y/n). Waking up this morning was an eye-opening experience.
Y/N: …
Cyno: No? How about this one: Never discuss infinity with a mathematician, they can go on about it forever.
You have to kiss him as a distraction if you want him to stop, otherwise he will literally go on all day with his jokes
After the first couple of times, Cyno learned that telling jokes to you won him kisses. He totally doesn’t use this fact to his advantage

Tumblr media
Thoma:
This man is the walking definition of acts of service
Need help reaching something? Thoma is doing it before you even ask. Hungry? He’ll have a five course meal prepared for you with all of your favorite things. Tired from work? Don’t worry, he’ll have all your chores taken care of so that you can relax
He likes giving physical affection too, but in public it’ll just be a gentle squeeze of your hand or a kiss on the cheek. In private, he’s a bit more touchy; holding you by your waist, peppering kisses anywhere that you will allow, etc
Thoma’s work with the Yashiro Comission always comes first, but he’s very good about balancing his work and your relationship. He never makes you feel like a second choice
He’ll love being able to take you to his favorite spots in Inazuma (that is, if he can go a minute without someone asking him for a favor). He shows you all of the well known sights as well as the unknown ones as well. When he shows you special places that only he knows about is how you know that this man is so in love with you
Thoma will definitely take you to feed the stray animals of Inazuma City weekly. You really get to see his nurturing side come out then with the animals. It almost hurts to watch him, he’s just so sweet.

Tumblr media
Kaeya
Despite his flirtatious behavior, Kaeya is a little reserved in his affections with you. A lot of it stems from his own personal trust issues
Even so, in public he WILL have an arm around your shoulder or waist, and straight up pout if you won’t let him
In private he’s more carefree with his physical affection, but you can tell that some of it is just surface level actions, a force of habit as he is a natural flirt
It’s not until you manage to melt the icy wall around his heart that you see the real depth of his affection; his eyes linger on you, smoldering. He gives gentle caresses to your hair, and holds you against his chest as though he were scared of you disappearing if he let go
Despite is initial reserved nature, Kaeya always gives you words of affirmation, although they often come in the form of incessant teasing
Dates with him are actually pretty common. Being the Calvary Captain without calvary, his schedule is pretty flexible. This isn’t to say he doesn’t work hard, but his hard work is always done behind the scenes. He doesn’t want to give you a reason to worry about him anymore than he already does
His favorite thing to do with you is to go to the Angel’s Share and gossip. Yes, gossip, and you two are like old ladies together in the thrill of unravelling the drama around Mondstat, and there is a lot of it to go around.
You two never bring about any harm with this, but it’s fun for him to teach you ways on how to read people and collect information, and he gets to have both work and pleasure rolled into one as he listens into conversations for any intel he may need

I'm so tired.
My Dad has...let's call them serious medical issues. They don't threaten his life on the day-to-day, but they can when they suddenly flare up. He also has what I would call "inconvenient issues," such as weight and incontinence, that instantly cut off a lot of health and transport services.
I can't drive. I spent 10 years trying in my 20s. I'm so tired of having to explain this to people who can't comprehend an inability to drive. I have no other family living here who can help. I have one sister 2000 miles away with her own elder care issues, and that's it. I don't have close friends that I can just randomly impose on.
Dad's docs sent him to the ER today. A non-emergency ambulance ride was helpfully arranged. But the ER just discharged him after a few hours. "Treated and released."
He has no way to get home. It's Friday night, all of the transport companies that *could* handle his weight and lack of mobility refused. His usual service requires 24 hour notice, and doesn't take reservations after 5pm. The same ambulance service *will* bring him home...tomorrow afternoon.
He's stuck sitting in the ER. I can't get to him. I've been assured he'll get basic care, but I can't get confirmation that they'll, y'know, give him his meds, because they don't do that when you're discharged. The patient care coordinator is "looking into it." At least I had her help, because I honestly don't know where to even start. I've looked into transport services before and had absolutely no luck in even finding them, much less getting their service.
I'm constantly told by random "helpful" people about all these wonderful services that exist to make all of this easier, and to care for people like Dad. They INSIST there's help. But if you look into it, the services either flat don't exist, or they do, but they won't help YOU, because you don't qualify. You need too much assistance they can't help with. Or they only offer care that doesn't actually help your issue.
Sometimes you're told that you have to be "persistent." You have to keep badgering people and ignoring the no until they cave and help you. Which one, is utterly insane. And two, has never fucking worked for me. When I get emotional, I get *nothing*. People won't deal with me if I get too angry or upset. And they certainly won't explain how I'm supposed to do what they expect me to do to unlock the magic cheat codes that will solve all my problems.
You can't help but feel the cruelty of it all. How you don't fit into the overall fantasy everyone else lives in. How people just shrug and decide that you must not be doing enough, therefore it's all your fault you couldn't get help. Just learn to drive! How? I tried, it didn't work, what am I supposed to do to get past the repeated failure? Just do this, just do that. I don't know how. Nobody is going to show me the 'how', you're just supposed to magically figure it out. It's supposed to just work out, somehow. Oh, it didn't? Well, you fucked up. You shouldn't do that. Do it right, and things will be okay. Why can't you just do it right, why do you expect others to hold your hand and help you? You shouldn't need so much help! Oh, things got really bad, didn't they? Why didn't you ask for help?
I know we're not the only ones. There are people "slipping through the cracks" all the time. Often they die from it. I suspect I'll die from it when I'm older and more disabled, because I won't even have someone as bad as it like me fumbling to help me like I fumble to help my Dad.
Don't get me wrong, I've had some shocking acts of kindness in dark moments. People going above and beyond to help out a stranger, often without even being asked. There *are* people who do try to help. But those are individuals, and they *are* going above and beyond. Our society as a whole is cruel, it's set up to be cruel and unhelpful, and it's masked by the firm belief in the fantasy that help is always there for you if you need and deserve it. When it's not, you wake up to the lie. But nobody will actually believe you until they're up shit creek with you.
Thank you for reading my wail. But please, don't start suggesting I look for help from services you assume must be there, somewhere.

Do sirens use weell chairs to get around on land
Sometimes they do! They actually have a few different mobility options.
Riding a small beast is one of the most popular options. There are usually services near busy shorelines that offer animals for rent. These animals can be ridden by sirenes if they need to go further inland. Donkeys, ponies, large dogs, ala-beguzo, and horses are most common. Sirenes are not the only ones who rent these beasts though, sometimes Terrian tourists will rent them when their feet get tired from walking around. It's a lucrative business.
Sirenes can also buy potions of levitation to fly around the city. Now, there are some safety regulations regarding this in most places. For example, you're not allowed to levitate more than X number of feet off the ground at any time or you'll be fined by police. So while it may be tempting to soar around the rooftops, it is not permitted in most cases. Potion use is illegal or heavily restricted in some regions, so it's not always an option depending on where you are.
The price of these potions varies based on how long the effects last. 30 seconds to a few minutes is cheap. A couple hours is doable for most people. More than a day is where it gets too pricey for the average person. There is also a risk of getting a bad potion, which may give the patron a different effect entirely, not last as long as advertised, or just do nothing at all. And good luck getting a refund after you've already drank it!
Sirenes can also simply hire rickshaws/carriages/cart operators to take them inland for a fee.
No matter which option they choose, all Aquarian species must be sure to pack enough water for their trip. They dehydrate very quickly, so they have to periodically splash water onto their scales and drink as much as they can while they're out. Usually they'll wear a large canteen like a backpack and keep refilling it whenever they have the opportunity.
Alaine wears one of these in a few stories, most notably in "The Wretched Forge".
And like you mentioned, they can also use wheelchairs to get around, which they might own or rent from vendors near the shore. Depending on what kingdom they're in and how much they're willing to pay, they can get a self-propelled chair, a magic-powered chair, or a battery-powered chair. These chairs might have wheels, mechanical legs, or hovering capabilities.
I will also mention that sirenes can move around on land with just their flippers. They move with the same speed and grace as a seal on land, which isn't very fast, but if their destination isn't too far inland they'll just travel by flipper.

Lost and Found
Some purely self-indulgent stuff this time; I randomly wrote out the “Reina gets drunk and confesses” scene for my Emmet x OC... Not Fic??? called Watching the Earth Rise.
Not completely relevant to the scene, but this one’s set in the AU version of their story, briefly described here, (though the text doesn’t seem to show up on my blog unless I’m on mobile? 😕 Idk why.)
Tl;dr - Ingo's been missing a decade, Emmet is 39, Reina is 29 and works at Grear Station. They are both Very Fucking Tired™️; emotional hijinks ensue. (Inspiration heavily by leggerefiore's SilverFox!Emmet au.)
So yeah, uh. Enjoy~
CW: depression, grief, alcohol, allusions to past tragedy.
(Sort of hurt/comfort; mutual pining, love confessions, pre-romance.)
===
It’s well after midnight by the time her last bottle runs dry, but she’s still sober enough to feel the crushing weight of the silence in her empty, unfurnished closet of an apartment. Stupid, cheap, watery vodka; it had tasted like nail polish remover, the smell strong enough to make her sinuses burn, but she’s now two bottles in and it still it hasn’t been enough to get her so drunk she can forget. It’s not even tomorrow yet, not properly, because even though it’s not technically today anymore, there’s still enough of it left, spilling over despite the clock turning the hours from night into morning, that it doesn’t feel like tomorrow - and that’s the part that really matters. All she’s left with now is the aching quiet and the chemical taste of regret lingering on her tongue.
She needs something - a movie, a song, a voice, anything, because the booze isn’t doing its job, the night isn’t passing like it needs to, the 12th won’t end - but right now there’s nothing. She can’t rewatch The Kids on the Bridge for the hundredth time, she knows, because the music and the story, (usually things that keep her sane, keep her going, keep her alive,) will wreck her. Even the musical's 'darkest before the dawn' message won't be enough to help; the 12th isn’t the day for things she keeps close, it’s not the day for the pieces of herself that manage to stay afloat, taking in water but still hanging on for dear life. It’s the worst sort of irony, to have something she can turn to but only on any day that she doesn’t desperately need it.
Anastasia is out, too, for the exact same reason, though amplified because of its deeper tether to her past - too much of a reminder of the too-few happy childhood memories when people now gone were still here.
She doesn’t trust herself in her drunk-but-still-too-sober state to go digging through her music, either; the heavier stuff will just fuck with her head right now, too much all at once, and the rest, well. She made the mistake once of trying to put her playlists on shuffle so she didn’t have to choose a song. The resulting mental rabbit hole had almost been worse than the hollowness she’d been trying to drown out in the first place.
She doesn’t want to wake her pokemon up, despite how much she desperately wants Cloak to wrap her up in her wings. Reina could use the cuddles - alarmingly so - but her team worry enough over her as it is, and they’re all probably asleep by now. She can’t burden them with this. Not again. Not for the tenth year in a row. They deserve to move forward in the way she can’t - or to properly mourn without having to babysit her, too.
Near to tears at the feeling of utter desolation slowly creeping in from the back of her skull, Reina reaches for her phone. She could call someone, maybe? Surely she knows someone still awake at this hour?
Reina pauses, her tipsy mind defogging for a second, reminding her that she does not, in fact, know anyone. Other than her one friend back in Galar, (who is most assuredly either dead asleep or just barely waking up for work right now) her contacts list consists of the PokeCenter, two numbers that are no longer in service and never will be again, and name that never had a number to begin with, and her boss. Her workaholic, insomniac boss.
Whom she has the stupidest fucking crush on.
(Let it be said that poor states of mind, coupled with desperation, mixed with alcohol and budding affection, will dampen even the shrudest of impulse control. It is a formula to be feared.)
Reina’s holding her phone against her ear before she even fully processes she’s hit ‘call’. It vibrates the side of her head, the dull ringing on the line making her feel dizzy as the tipsiness rolls back in. She can’t tell if she likes it or not.
The phone rings twice, three times, then picks up with a muted ‘click.’
“Miss Kageyama?”
Reina sucks in a deep, sharp breath at the sound of his voice. It’s like ice being pressed over a patch of scalded flesh, a soothing balm in auditory form, and for a moment she feels the horrible jitters subside just a little.
But then she realizes what he’s said and her mouth pulls into a frown.
“...Helllllllo?”
“Yoooooooooou,” she slurs accusingly, “are still at work.” She huffs. “Why are you still at work?”
There is a moment of silence, wherein her boss is likely blinking at his phone screen in confusion. He chuckles, just once. It’s a tense, unsure sound that doesn’t seem to hold much humor, just exhaustion. It still sends a tingle through Reina’s core to hear it so close to her ear, and she unconsciously presses her thighs together for the span of a heartbeat.
“You don’t know that,” he says, and it might be either a deflection or an attempt at teasing, but Reina is too far into the bottle to be able to tell right now.
Instead of picking one, she settles for responding with a, (perfectly mature) “Yuh-huh. Do, too.”
She hears him take a breath on the other end of the line, readying a reply, so she cuts him off before he can make it. “You said ‘Kageyama.’ Kageyama is what you call me at work. Off the clock is Reina.” Another huff, this one morphing into a faint whine at the tail end. There is a small, quiet pout to her voice as she adds, much softer, “...I like it when you call me Reina…”
More silence follows; then, finally, there comes the muted crackle of a shallow exhale. “...Reina…”
But she cuts him off a second time with a hum that, again, is more of a whine. “No.”
“No?”
“No.” Reina sits back against the bare wall she’s been cuddled up to this whole time, defiant despite him not being able to see her. “You can’t call me that yet because you’re still at work.” She pouts, harder this time, petulant like a child and just as stubborn. “Go home. You need to sleep.” Her tone shifts, some old protective instinct half-remembered drifting up and out from its dank little corner and coloring her words like a scold. “And… and probably eat something, too. And water. You need to…” She pauses to get a better grip on her words as they get heavier on her tongue, thick with alcohol. She ‘hnn’s through her teeth in frustration. “Mm. Don’t… You’re gonna say you already did, and you’re a bad liar, so I’m gonna know.” A third huff - something that has evidently become a good part of her vocabulary tonight. “You need to clock out and… I care about you, you fucking… you dumbass. Okay? Take better care of yourself.”
As much as she would (and inevitable will) be appalled at herself without the haze of shitty vodka, any and all thoughts of her own plight - of the 12th - have been successfully, albeit temporarily, pushed from her mind as her bottled-up affection and concern for one of the only living contacts in her phone begins to pour out in ernest. She frowns, almost scowls, and feels hot tears prickle behind her eyes. She grimaces; they do not fall.
“...Reina,” Emmet says softly. It’s patient, ever-so-slightly frosty, like his guard is up, professional mask crooked but in place - but it’s still kind, still that same quiet sort of comforting that’s been wrapping Reina’s heart tighter and tighter around his little finger for months. “Are you drunk?”
She barks a bitter laugh. “Not drunk enough.”
“Oooooookaaaay…” He sounds… worried? Reina isn’t entirely certain since she can’t see him, but from the way he draws out the word, she can picture the little furrow of his brows that Emmet does when he’s out of his depth.
He pauses. Reina waits.
“I am Emmet. You sound… Not. Alright.”
She can’t think of a lie, and it doesn’t register as important to do so, so she simply tells him, “I’m not.”
She hears him exhale. Not a sigh, just an exhale. (There’s a difference, she’s noticed.)
“Can I help?” he asks her, voice quiet.
Reina wants to sob. He’s so kind! Even now, at quarter-to-one in the morning, when she’s most likely breached half a dozen boundaries - both professional and personal - by calling him while drunk, and calling him names. She can’t even fathom it, can’t comprehend it; there is no way this man is real, and certainly no way she deserves to be anywhere near him. (Her chest aches as she reminds herself that her love for him has been doomed from the very start, that she’ll never be worthy, will never have anything to offer him besides the tattered remnants of a person long broken past repair.) A tear finally falls, and Reina is suddenly choking. She shakes her head, both forgetting and grateful for the fact that he can’t see her through the phone.
“N-no,” she hiccups. Her whole body shudders. “No you can’t. It’s… today is bad.”
“Bad?” he repeats.
She nods again, sucking in a watery breath. “Uh-huh. The day is bad. The… the 12th. It’s bad.” Another hiccup catches in her throat as she reaches up to scrub her sleeve against her eyes.
Emmet stays quiet as she sucks in another breath that doesn’t fill her lungs. Suddenly she remembers what today is, why she’d called in the first place, why she’d needed to hear his voice. She coughs on an exhale; it becomes a low, pained whine.
He calls her name softly, gently, Emmet the Subway Boss now replaced entirely by Emmet her friend, Emmet the man she’s fallen head over heels for so hard that she’s surprised she didn’t break something.
She coughs again, giving him an, “Uh?” to show she’s heard him.
“Why is the 12th bad?”
Reina makes a sound low in the back of her throat. She doesn’t know what it is, exactly, but it rattles at her chest, leaving her feeling scratchy and raw. Her back bows and her neck bends until she’s folded so far forward that her forehead nearly touches the boring carpet. “I… I can’t,” she chokes, “I can’t. It’s just. It’s bad. Today is bad.” She emphasizes the word again and again, as if that alone will tell him what he wants to hear, what she can’t bring herself to say lest it break her down more than a single night’s sleep will be able to fix. Or at least, tape her back together.
But she keeps going.
Reina takes another wobbly, tearful breath. “But you’re not. You’re not, and that’s why I needed…” She sniffs. “You’re so nice it hurts.”
Emmet gives an airy, vaguely nervous giggle, unsure. “Uh. Thank you?”
Reina shakes her head until she’s dizzy. “Nooooo, you don’t - don’t get it. I have to tell you I love you. I have to. That’s what… I have to tell you today because… because…” She can’t get it out. No matter how she tries, she can’t tell him why it has to be today. She can’t tell him that today is the day she needs to cling to the memory of the people she loves and can no longer tell. She can’t give him the words to say that she needs to cling to him now, as well, because he’s the one person she can tell, and it feels like she’ll die if she doesn’t tell him before it’s too late to say it to him, too.
And yet.
“...Because today is bad?” he asks. And it’s so, so gentle, like he knows anyway - or if nothing else, he can guess. He knows there’s something important, something painful, even if he doesn’t know what it is.
“Yeah,” she whispers. And it’s enough.
Neither one of them says anything for a while after that. Emmet simply stays on the line as she cries openly into her hand. She can hear him breathing faintly, and it’s comforting to know he’s still there despite it all. Eventually, eventually, her sobbing slows, and Reina hears his voice once more softly calling her name.
“Reina? Still with me?”
She takes a deep breath and lets it back out. It only quavers a little bit this time.
“...Yeah.”
Emmet hums. “Good.” There’s a pause, like he’s thinking. “You should go to bed,” he says, and though it’s kind, there’s a slight edge to it, the barest hint of an authoritative tone. “Drink water first; you’re going to be verrrry dehydrated after this. Can you do that for me?”
She’s too wrung out to argue anymore. Besides, it’s… nice. To hear him say that; it stirs the same echoes that her own scolding had before - all that remains of a time long past. “Yes, Sir,” she breathes, already feeling the exhaustion settling in.
“Good,” he says again. Then, gentler, “Do you need tomorrow off?”
Reina feels her stomach sink. “N-no. Please no, I don’t want–”
“Okay,” he shushes (kind, so goddamn kind.) “No tomorrow off. No leaving you alone. It’s okay.”
She settles back against the wall, relief flooding her veins to drive out the panic. “Thank you.”
He just hums.
A moment passes before he speaks again. “Reina?”
“...Yeah?”
“Go to bed now.”
She swallows the sticky, scratchy lump in her throat and wipes at the tear tracks on her face. She can do that, she thinks. She can do that now. “...Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Okay,” she agrees. “But… Only if you do, too.”
That earns her a quiet chuckle, this one much more like an actual laugh. It’s tired, breathy, but real.
“I am Emmet. It’s a deal.”
Reina giggles faintly in return. “Cute,” she whispers.
“I… mmm.”
Reina giggles again at his obvious attempt to stifle the familiar verbal tic - it’s a sign he’s flustered, and it makes her body feel warm to hear it. “Hee. Cute.”
There is an exasperated (flustered) sigh. “Good NIGHT, Miss Kageyama," he huffs, but it’s a bit less stern than it’s likely meant to be.
“Reina,” she corrects.
“I am Emmet. Go. To. Bed.”
She snorts. “Going.”
Her smile fades then, slowly melting into something… not quite peaceful, but calmer than she’s felt in a long time. It’s better, even if it’s not completely better. It gives her the strength to whisper one last thing before she heeds her boss’s orders and passes out on the carpet, wrapped up in her travel blanket.
“...I love you.”
(And if, right before she hangs up, there’s a too-quiet whisper in return, she just chalks it up to her imagination, not so far gone in the last dregs of her intoxication to believe she’s heard him say it back.)

Back to Uganda
25-26th February 2023
Tumblr media
Leaving the house at 2.45 a.m. and arriving in our Entebbe guesthouse at 11.30 p.m. made for quite  a long day. But all the documents were present and correct and our baggage came with us all the way to Uganda, unlike last year when we had quite a challenging start.
Some of you will be familiar with the necessities that need to be obtained  - visas are much easier because you can do most of it on line. Currency – Millions of Uganda shillings needed to pay for our transport and fuel apart from anything else, because you can’t rely on paying by card on this kind of safari.
Then it’s worth changing the SIM cards on our mobiles to make communications slicker within Uganda. That process is quite fun, as once in the relevant shop you have a session with several different people (the equivalent to “Cashier number 3 please”) before the ceremonial insertion of your Uganda card and then working out where to stash your removed very small UK SIM card for safekeeping.
After a quick sortie into the local supermarket for safari sundries – a surprisingly wide variety of goods for sale – we had a quick lunch and headed south to Nkima Forest Lodge. The weeks preceding our departure had been quite complicated and tiring,  and Ewan decided we should begin the safari with a day off.
As we came to the lodge the owner was sorting out “a little water problem” – there was none. Dry weather meant the water table had dropped, affecting the supply. And the sun had not been shining so the water was not being heated!
Tumblr media
But we were glad to arrive, and the water problem was duly sorted. We’ve been especially pleased to find we had some very congenial fellow guests: four young civil servants from UK.
I don’t know your views on civil servants but having worked in government service in both UK and Africa, we rather approve of them and recognise their importance. After all, they are the ones who try to give good information and advice to government ministers and a great deal depends on that.
The group currently at Nkima are working in conflict resolution, humanitarian relief aid, and secret projects they couldn’t name…..all fascinating and we found them irresistibly interesting and admirable. How refreshing.
Nkima is an eco-lodge, powered by the sun.
Tumblr media
Solar lights recharging.
Nkima lodge is famous especially for the chance to see shoebill storks, very rare, in the swamps around Lake Victoria. And that’s just what we did this morning, travelling in a small boat along the channels through the reeds, water lilies and hyacinths, with a marvellous variety of birds along the way.
Tumblr media
Wonderful to see so many malachite kingfishers, one of our very favourites, and exquisitely beautiful.
Tumblr media
Pied Kingfisher and a Malachite King fisher
And finally, we did indeed meet a shoebill stork, huge and impressive with quite a presence. He apparently stays in one place for 3-4 hours, catching a very occasional lungfish for a snack. We can see why people get excited about such a sighting. We were delighted later to see one on the wing, soaring, as our guide announced, “up to the clouds”.
Tumblr media
Shoebills: notes for enthusiasts. You don’t have to read this bit, but some of the info we’ve found is so fascinating we thought we’d give you the chance to share in it.
Shoebills: “perhaps the most eagerly sought of all African birds” by anyone with even the slightest interest in birds.
Two things combine to give the shoebill its striking appearance
It’s huge! An adult might stand more than 5 feet (150cm) tall. Seeing ours standing in the swamp it could easily have been a human.
Its clog-shaped hook-tipped bill, 20cm wide and almost as long, the largest of all living bird species. Perhaps not surprising that it's part of the pelican family. The bill is held in a permanent Cheshire cat smile, and the bird can look both sinister and inane. One of our young civil servants was eyeballed by a shoebill in the swamp yesterday and wondered if it was going to attack, but it just kept on smiling.
Tumblr media
More fun facts about shoebills
Shoebills live for ages in bird terms – up to 50 years. They are faithful partners for life, male and female building a grassy nest up to 3m wide on a floating island.
Parents share incubation duties. In hot weather they fill their beaks with water and spray the eggs to keep them cool. How cool is that? Eggs hatch after a month, and the dedicated parents continue to feed them for another two.
The adult birds spend a lot of time standing around semi-frozen for several hours before suddenly plunging with great drama, speed and power to make a successful kill of a favourite lungfish, a tasty toad, or perhaps a baby crocodile.
Shoebills are remarkable birds of distinctive appearance and with fascinating characteristics. Not surprisingly they come with a number of myths, legends and superstitions, and remain under threat as their habitats are being destroyed
Here in the Mabamba swamp in Uganda it really pays the local community to protect the environment and the special shoebills. Tourists, particularly birding enthusiasts but not only them, pay local people significant sums for the privilege of a boat ride through the swamp with a knowledgeable guide and a reasonable chance of seeing a shoebill.
We had a wonderful morning, and along with so many brilliant birds almost within touching distance, seeing the shoebill both on land and in the air was a precious privilege. We felt much restored.

Note
Sleepy, I figured out two things today: how to leave comments on Docs Mobile and that Docs is a fun thing to do on the subway.
Years and years ago, I moved to the city for work. I started off doing an internship just a few blocks from NYU, then landed a job at an indie northward. The summer that all started was, well. Not perfect, but I remember the long subway rides. It takes a half an hour minimum to get anywhere in the city—long stretches underground with no cell service. You had to take things to do to keep yourself stable, assuming of course you weren't dead tired or packed in like sardines (which was likely). I wrote. And read. Sometimes got brave enough to sleep.
Which is to say I understand why working from home is necessary. I'm an advocate for that being a permanent option, actually. But as I'm on minute fifteen of a thirty-minute ride, just now approaching Lexington and 63rd, I'm realizing I miss this being a regular thing. The roar of the subway. Faint chatter from the other end of the car. The smell of stale air and weed through a mask.
I'm not sure if you go to the city all that often, but the older cars have poetry and art in them. Not graffiti, sadly, because they clean that up, but ad posters with poems about the exhausted spirit of the city or something. Feels a little manufactured saying that out loud, but I appreciate there are people like us, tired and cat-napping on subways between scribbles of fantasy ball-pointed in beat-up notebooks. When I first moved to the city, I didn't think I'd like it. I still don't; it's just a city, an object. But it's the people. Shades of them everywhere, just like us.
Which is all to say finally, after many distractions, really getting into dirt in the doing.
But oop, here's my stop. :')
In December, 2014, my college cohort spent 4 weeks in Italy.
I've been to big cities, I've been to small ones. I've roamed old streets and new ones. I've been surrounded by languages I do not speak and foods I've never tried. And in 2014, I spent 3 weeks in Florence, and it felt like coming home.
I had never been, but it felt like I had. Cobblestones and cathedrals, markets and museums. We saw so many antique things, so many beautiful things. On a typical day, we wandered around a gallery with our travel group, admiring and learning. We drank cappuccinos and ate so much pasta. The Christmas decorations were up, a massive tree beaide the Duomo, and large snowflakes of light hung over street signs. Sometimes we'd walk back to the bus in the dark, in the light of snowflakes and angels, holding hands to keep warm, laughing. It felt like home.
Often, I'd break away from the group after we finished the day's outing, and would wander on my own. I had a bus pass and a map, and I never feared getting lost. I've always been good at finding my way through cities when armed with a map. I'd memorize corner shops and street names and stop at the It Cafe for a chocolate muffin on the way back. I'd listen to music on the bus, surrounded by strangers reading or sleeping, and it felt like home.
I don't like cities, as a rule. I live in the country and I love it. I don't prefer the closed in bustle or tall, tall buildings. But for a little while, for enough time to memorize bus stops and find a favorite café, and for the stones under my shoes to feel familiar in the unknown, I do love it, because it feels like coming home.
Do you know what writing letters with you feels like? It feels like coming home.

25 Nov 2022: Could membership be much more radical?
Newsletter news
It has had an excellent and enjoyable run but the Co-op Digital newsletter ends next month. We’re going to wrap up with 3 newsletters considering questions about membership, shops, and the material world.
Thank you all for reading and sending ideas. The Co-op story continues on the brilliant Co-op Digital blog. Rod will be writing about climate change and carbon transformation at Holdfast and about money at Checksies. See you there?
Tumblr media
Could membership be much more radical?
Local stores offer a convenient geographic proximity - they’re just round the corner.
Could they offer a second kind of proximity, and be a critical part of communities? Could they help communities thrive with services, support, infrastructure as well as just the shop and the local causes bits?
Can a shop turn into a true member organisation? Can it help repair and maintain community?
These questions matter because the world is changing ever faster, and everything (products, services, institutions, infrastructure, jobs, cities etc) will need looking after, improving or remaking.
2030
“Can you fix it? Because this bike and I have been through a lot.” says Reenie at the bike shop.
Jim, behind the counter, nods. “Your battery has done a lot of kilometres and it is very tired now. I can swap it out for a new one for 499 which is the battery and the labour. Or I can sign you up for this Gobattery service which is a new battery every year for 199 annually and the labour’s free.”
“Which would you do?”, asks Reenie.
“Um, probably not Gobattery”, Jim murmurs quietly.
“OK. What happens to the old battery?”
“And your old battery will go have a relaxing retirement doing grid backup for a shopping centre or somewhere like that.” Then more brightly, Jim adds: “We’re a member of The Co-op, are you? I can add you in the app, it only costs 20. You get discounts in shops, vote on decisions, and help each other out. I can give you a 50 discount right now, so the card will cost you nothing. But it’s like you’re part of” - Jim’s hands wheeling - “you know, a… Thing.”
“Yeah OK, sounds interesting? Thanks.”
Jim taps at the terminal and there’s a quick transactional handshake of lights and bings. An app downloads to Reenie’s mobile, which briefly pops a green tick saying that the app is properly signed and isn’t hoovering up too much personal data. Reenie opens the app - it has already onboarded her - which says both of their Co-op memberships have earned 200 points for the transaction, and a green leaf grows on the screen: a small but positive update to the carbon budgets of Reenie, of Jim, and of the Co-op itself.
“Nice. It all adds up, you’ll see”, says Jim.
Several weeks later, and late in the evening, Reenie’s Co-op app bleeps out a red alert. A fellow member needs help: their premises is flooding. Reenie shrugs, grabs a coat and heads for the bike. The map takes her back to the bike shop.
Before she can make a joke about the emergency services arriving, Jim shouts: “The river burst its banks! Move things up, or put sandbags here, please?”.
And Reenie and a couple of others get to work, placing sandbags, lifting everything onto higher shelves, bailing water out of the shop. The culvert is cleared and the flood water starts to recede. It takes two hours. The bottom layer of the shop is now a landscape of grey mud over unidentifiable product shapes. The same mud that coats them.
Jim says: “Thank you so much. This stuff needs to dry out but some of it’ll be ok. Hey, take anything you want too, seriously, thanks. And I’ll update the app and send you points tomorrow.”
“OK cool. But it’s not about the points.”

The Rise of Mobile Auto Repair: Convenience and Expertise at Your Doorstep
Tumblr media
In an era where time is often the most valuable resource, mobile auto repair services have emerged as a game-changer for vehicle owners. These services bring the expertise of traditional auto repair shops directly to your location, whether it’s your home, office, or even a parking lot. With the increasing demand for convenience and efficiency, mobile auto repair is rapidly becoming the preferred choice for many.
What is Mobile Auto Repair?
Mobile auto repair refers to a service model where certified mechanics travel to the customer’s location to perform a wide range of repairs and maintenance tasks on-site. From routine oil changes to more complex diagnostics and repairs, these services offer a comprehensive solution for vehicle maintenance without the need to visit a traditional auto shop.
Key Benefits of Mobile Auto Repair
Unmatched Convenience
One of the most significant advantages of mobile auto repair is the convenience it offers. There’s no need to take time out of your day to drive to a repair shop, wait for your vehicle to be serviced, and then drive back. With mobile services, the mechanic comes to you, allowing you to continue with your day without interruption. Whether you’re at home, at work, or even out running errands, mobile auto repair fits seamlessly into your schedule.
Time Efficiency
Traditional auto repairs can be time-consuming, often requiring you to drop off your vehicle and wait for hours, if not days, for the work to be completed. Mobile auto repair eliminates these delays by providing quick and efficient service on-site. Most minor repairs and routine maintenance tasks can be completed in under an hour, meaning you can have your vehicle back on the road with minimal downtime.
Personalized Service
When you choose a mobile auto repair service, you’re often dealing directly with the mechanic who will be working on your vehicle. This direct interaction allows for better communication, ensuring that your specific needs and concerns are addressed. Additionally, many mobile mechanics offer a more personalized approach, taking the time to explain the work being done and providing tailored advice on maintaining your vehicle.
Cost-Effectiveness
Mobile auto repair services are often more cost-effective than traditional shops. With lower overhead costs—no need to maintain a physical location—many mobile mechanics can offer competitive pricing for their services. Additionally, since the service is performed at your location, you save on towing fees and the potential costs associated with leaving your vehicle at a shop for extended periods.
Wide Range of Services
Despite being mobile, these services are equipped to handle a wide range of repairs and maintenance tasks. Common services include oil changes, brake repairs, battery replacements, diagnostic checks, tire changes, and even more complex repairs such as alternator or starter replacements. Many mobile mechanics also carry diagnostic tools that allow them to quickly identify and resolve issues on-site.
How Mobile Auto Repair Works
The process of using a mobile auto repair service is straightforward. Typically, you’ll start by contacting the service provider to schedule an appointment. During this initial contact, you’ll describe the issue you’re experiencing or request specific maintenance services. The mechanic will then arrive at your location at the scheduled time, fully equipped with the necessary tools and parts to perform the work. After the repair or maintenance is completed, the mechanic will usually provide a detailed report of the work done, along with any recommendations for future maintenance.
Conclusion
As our lives become increasingly busy, the demand for convenient, time-saving solutions continues to grow. Mobile auto repair services meet this demand by offering a flexible, cost-effective alternative to traditional auto shops. By bringing professional, personalized vehicle maintenance directly to your location, mobile auto repair allows you to keep your car in top condition without sacrificing your valuable time. Whether you need a simple oil change or more complex repairs, mobile auto repair is a reliable and efficient option that’s quickly gaining popularity among vehicle owners.

it's me - a flaming trash pile! flaming as in gayer than you. you welcome.
i had things to write about but depression my brain and demanded seconds.
this post is to say that i might be offline for a few days, because i'm finally able to solve a phone issue. for once it isn't me overusing technology and setting it on fire but it's my mum who kills mobiles for breakfast. i mentioned it before - her device kicked the bucket a year or so ago and we had to buy a whole arse newish phone as a backup because our drawer of nokias can't run whatsapp. hotels in glasgow would collapse without that precious app where everyone sends passive-aggressive emoticons or david beckhams and babies (like my mum).
she broke the backup phone without even trying. it sort of works but the cpu is very close to leaving for greener ... silicone pastures (i'm so funny). sounds simple right? yeah, not if you're your average group of people and we know what happens with those... we created an unholy ouroboros of phones. i can't even tell why we ended up like this, because it sort of doesn't make sense. the dead piece of fancy metal and glass was actually my mobile and i know that i didn't have it for long, because ... my mother had murdered her older phone which had been replaced after she had brutally killed her ex's spare phone. and why did she have that? my older device was with my own ex's dad while he was with his stepfather. anyone understands any of this? you're better than me, because i was using my mum's phone for the last two years :) . if anyone wonders why would we buy a spare phone if there was one - i dunno. did i have two phones and give her one while i retained the other one, which later was replaced?
maybe. all i know is that it was around the time i had a heart failure. neither me nor my mum remembers much from that riveting time and yet we somehow managed to buy a car at some point or rather - we stared at the walls while the staff at the local garage did everything. i would side-eye that to as who in their right mind would switch off thinking when doing business with the scammiest industry? we happen to have a garage with a good dealership and i shit you not - people there are honest and helpful, which means that we are spoiled.
back to my boring rambling - the missing phone from the circulation was my own. mum had a contract glitch last year when her phone died and everyone was too tired to fix it while mine was fine. we fixed it last month. so, have i been procrastinating for a month? nope - my missing phone got properly lost in the mail. i ordered it with a load of parts to replace, because i used mum's phone like a computer and it overheated loads therefore i need to replace the casing and the screen. i have em and i have spare ones and all those dull protective bits and bobs. did not have the unit, though and it took hours of weeping to customer service but finally managed to resolve it and now i have everything with me in bed. yes, i'm sleeping with all of that. i deserve a little treat - a little victory nap.
in other news - my left eye decided it dislikes astigmatism and half-fixed itself by reversing in the direction it is meant to be on (the lens did). it's weird. it never happened to me that my eye was better. i'm waiting for it to explode.
and we're meant to have guests in september. double-guests as friend i saw few posts ago will also be in town.
i'll see you soon internet. hopefully. did i mention that i was meant to update the router because bt said so and the new one is just ... in the hallway? still laminated and boxed along with half of my life that exists in other boxes. me and my mun will just throw them out (not the router!) as glasgow lacks any honest and transparent donation centres. mcmillian is okay in england but dunno how it's in scotland. there's thing there that i like but ... i'm too traumatised - if i gave up on a whole pc (it also had industrial cooling), then it says something.
we also currently work the best at 4-5 am, because. my mum yesterday exclaimed that what ex done was actually illegal (overall, i don't mean anything related to stuff - i did write to his family to just take it and use it or sell it or burn it. things are just things) and without getting into even more details - yeah, she's right and I knew that. considered it at my worst, before i confirmed that he is alive - if he had a court summon, he'd need to respond to it, so it was a method that i thought about but even if his actions were beyond horrid - i'd feel petty. i have a tiny, tiny, little pixel of pride left. not that i'm nice - i just want to have that classic revenge of being fabulously happy and making him jealous. i wouldn't need to see it, i'd just know. it is unlikely but maybe one day... when i am 99.
okay, the invisible audience of mine - signing out and resting my frizzy hair. it needs its beauty sleep.
