HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO DIRK GENTLY: ALL THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE REFERENCES I'VE NOTICED IN DIRK GENTLY'S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY (a.k.a. everything is connected)
(spoilers)
this took a good couple of hours and I tried to do this in order; buckle up!!
SEASON 1:
the posters on the windows as todd is walking by the convenience store place has a silhouette of a falling whale, what I assume is a reference to the infinite improbability drive whale, and an ad that says "zaphod," a reference to zaphod beeblebrox (s1e01 'horizons')
Tumblr media
(also todd's stance here is so funny to me)
the rowdy 3, consisting of four (and later five) members, could be a reference to how the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy is called a trilogy that happens to consist of 5 books ("there are four of them!" "I'm wildly aware")
one of the screens in the death maze has the number 42 on it (s1e04 'watkin')
Tumblr media
SEASON 2:
there are 42 blackwing subjects
Tumblr media
farah's awesome jacket with "D Adams" on it and the number 42 (multiple episodes)
Tumblr media
the boretons' dog is named agrajag, which is the entity that arthur dent accidentally kills in every incarnation. unfortunately he dies here too (multiple episodes)
in the tree car, farah remarks that "the odometer's only on 42 miles" (s2e02 'fans of wet circles')
Tumblr media
the book francis cardenas has by him as he's having the nightmare that says "PANIC!" on the cover (in what can only be large, unfriendly letters), with the subtitle "attack devil dolphins." (s2e07 'that is not miami')
Tumblr media
the executioner guy in wendimoor calling dirk a "hoopy frood" as he helps him unload the scissor blade things (s2e08 'little guy, black hair')
the blackwing phone number on the business card, "555-424-2424" with a wild amount of 42s (s2e09 'trouble is bad')
Tumblr media
dirk telling himself "don't panic" before jumping into the portal (s2e09 'trouble is bad')

hitchhikers guide to the galaxy for the fandom ask:)
AAA 100% was hoping someone would ask for this fandom so so so let's go let's go
favorite male character : judging by my blog theme, it should be obvious... marvin the paranoid android, my beloved... i feel so deeply for his character, i think about him all of the time...
favorite female character : favorite character of the entire series, the one and only tricia marie macmillan. my only gripe ever with the series is how it handles trillian in particular. by far, she was the smartest person in the entire main cast. the curse of being a female character in classic science fiction series 😔😔😔😔
least favorite character : i have no idea about this... I enjoyed every character in the series very wholeheartedly. the main cast of arthur, ford, marvin, zaphod and trillian, all the other side characters.
favorite ship : forthur, of course, never misses. but surprisingly, I really like zaphod x trillian as well, they have so much potential and they are worth developing. if i ever wrote a ship!fic for h2g2 (specifying ship!fic, because i have particular moods where i feel like writing a gen marvin-centric fic and one of these days, i might just give in), i would wrote for them.
favorite friendship : though forthur is my favorite romantic ship, i like their friendship too much. they are one of those parings that are compelling in both a romantic and platonic context. alternatively, i also like zaphod's dynamic with literally anyone.
favorite quote : h2g2 has such BANGER quotes, i have to make a top 3 list for this question. three of my favorite quotes in no particular order:
the obligatory "the story so far: in the beginning the universe was created. this has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
"now the world has gone to bed / darkness won't engulf my head / i can see by infrared / how I hate the night. / now i lay me down to sleep / try to count electric sheep / sweet dream wishes you can keep / how i hate the night - marvin."
"there is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. there is another which states that this has already happened.
worst character death : MARVIN'S DEATH. IT AFFECTED ME IN A WAY NO WILL EVER UNDERSTAND. bro was not present the entire so long and thanks for all the fish book and in the LAST FEW CHAPTER HE SHOWS UP. ONLY TO DIE. it was so tragic to me, "i think i feel good about it" right after "we apologize for the inconvenience." if i think too much of his death, i will cry.
this made me so happy you have no idea moment : an odd scene to be happy about but that marvin lullaby scene in life, universe and everything. for a non-marvin option, another one of my favorite moments is the one at the end of the restaurant at the end of the universe where the scrabble pieces spell out "what do you get if you multiply six by nine"
saddest moment : marvin's death but also the whale and petunia scene. that scene with the sperm whale should not BE THAT SAD. this series is one of my favorites and i will remember a detail from it and i will be more at awe and more in love with these books. like the thought process of the bowl of petunias like "curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was oh no, not again. many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.” AND NOW THAT IN LIFE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING, WE KNOW THAT IT WAS ONE OF AGRAJAG'S REINCARNATIONS.
favorite location : i have got to be 100% honest... i do not understand the different locations in this series at all. like the whole deal with krikkit and milliways just went right over my head. just to answer this question, let's just go with magrathea because that's really important.

Spoilers for the entire Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series
Got in a shit mood today, so I ended up re-reading some Douglas Adams.
"To make yourself laugh and cheer yourself up?"
Quite the opposite actually; this is pure wallowing.
Book One: the entire planet Earth gets exploded in the first few chapters, and one of the last surviving Earthlings discovers the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything -- and finds it is completely contextless. Book Two: Arthur eats at a tourist attraction set up at the literal end of all matter, then time-warps back to ancient Earth only to discover that true Earthling hominids were destroyed by the most useless invasive aliens. Book Three: Arthur discovers that reincarnation is real, and that a being named Agrajag has created an entire Cathedral of Hate because Arthur keeps accidentally killing every one of his incarnations. Book Four: Arthur finds love on an alternate version of Earth, and then watches a fan-favorite character die while reading God's Final Message to His Creation: "We Apologise for the Inconvenience".
But Book Five is particularly on my mind today (which is perhaps not surprising; it's a particularly bleak entry in the series, and Adams has admitted that he wrote it during a particularly miserable year of his life). With barely any ceremony, Arthur's true love is completely blipped away in a hyperspace jump. Left completely tetherless, Arthur travels to a planet of philosophers and oracles only to end up with completely useless homilies such as "Buy a beach house" or "Do the opposite of what I do so you don't end up in a stinking hut answering strangers' questions." He then tries to find a humanoid population to blend in with, but the first planet he discovers is filled with people who experience absolutely no desires, no wants, no passions. Realizing this is not his idea of peace, his travelling becomes more erratic as he desperately tries to recreate the accident that took Fenchurch away from him. Instead, he ends up in a different kind of accident and crashlands on Lamuella.
On Lamuella, the fraud prophet the Great Thrashbarg declares that Arthur had been sent by the Almighty Bob (trying to cover the fact that the spaceship has caused great destruction to the area). With an entire planet deciding to revere him as literally sent from the heavens, what does Arthur do?
He makes sandwiches.
He becomes the Sandwich Maker, and for multiple paragraphs Douglas Adams describes the skill and expertise with which Arthur Dent creates the perfect sandwiches (using the meat from the local fauna known as Perfectly Normal Beasts), and just how HAPPY Arthur is. After five books of travelling to every place and every time in the entire galaxy, after five books of being constantly shat upon and shat out by Life, The Universe, and the Whole Sort of General Mish Mash, Arthur Dent finds happiness simply as a Sandwich Maker. Uptight Earthman Arthur Dent actually sings as he makes his sandwiches. He is truly happy.
For one
fucking
chapter.
And then the rest of Mostly Harmless unfolds as it must, with Arthur meeting two alternate versions of Trillian and discovering the pocket dimension where Elvis is living and finally having his final showdown with Agrajag at Stavromula Beta, and then a gigantic conspiracy leads to the destruction of all Earths in all timelines (along with all Guides everywhere all at once) being destroyed not with a bang but a whimper, and then Douglas Adams dies before he can write Book Six.
At least the cast of the original radio show reunited to give the saga a more satisfying ending.
What does all this amount to?
I'm not sure if it does.
I'm making myself a sandwich.

[id: two pages of traditional sketches of various Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy characters. the top of the first page shows Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent. Ford is smiling widely and looking at Arthur. Ford's left hand is out to the side and his right hand is on Arthur's shoulder. Arthur looks upset and his hands are wrung together. beside them are the words "Happy Towel Day!". at the bottom of the page is a drawing of Zaphod Beeblebrox. both of his heads are smiling and looking to the left. Zaphod's right head is winking. Zaphod's right hand is making a fingergun while his first left hand is on his hip. his other left hand is out to the side. the second page features Trillian Astra at the top. she is pointing with her right hand and saying "Yes, that's a constant. Two to the power of two hundred and seventy six thousand, seven hundred, and nine to one against". below Trillian is a drawing of Random Frequent Flyer Dent. Random looks upset and she is crying. her makeup is running down her face and her right hand is gripping her hoodie. next to Random is a drawing of Marvin. Marvin looks angry and his left hand is out. Marvin is saying "Pardon me for breathing!" and breathing is an all caps. above Marvin is a small sketch of Agrajag as a fly and the number 42. at the bottom of the stage is of Fenchurch. she is smiling and looking to the right. her right hand is out and she is saying "My feet don't touch the ground!". next to Fenchurch is a drawing of a poster featuring Zaphod Beeblebrox. the poster shows his heads and reads "Vote Beeblebrox" in all caps/end id]
happy towel day !!! here are some sketches :-)

n00b next-day reactions
(still second episode drop - 3-6, but cut for possible spoilers? is there anyone who would be?)
1) Okay, so percy sold his soul to...something....for his vengeance. And the gun has the names of everyone he listed at the time he sold his soul as wanting vengeance on. You know, that bit isn’t the bit that bothers me? What bothers me is “am I going to watch this guy get his soul sucked out when all the names on the gun are gone”. That’s the bit that bothers me.
2) I find myself wanting to follow Pike’s journey more, just now. I want to understand more about what she’s fighting and why, and what her “Everlight” is and isn’t.
3) Scanlan is ...weirdly, the flattest-feeling character in the bunch? I mean, everyone else you can feel the weight of the Tragic Backstory, the many fights and battles and struggles. Scanlan, though, he’s one-note. And sometimes he can impress with his cleverness or sheer balls, but...mostly it feels like he’s not going to surprise me much. He wants to sleep with the whole world, as many times as possible, ideally on a very expensive bed with lots of custom made toys, and...that about seems to cover it.
4) I admit I’m kind of loving how characters sometimes come in with the most outrageously thick accents and nobody blinks. Like, sure. There’s scottish characters in a world that doesn’t seem to have a scotland, english characters in a world without an england, everyone just talks the way they feel like talking and it’s somehow just awesome instead of silly.
5) Please, someone, tell me that someone has or is in the process of writing a crossover of LOVM with Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Because all the Matt Mercer clones and the many ways in which they are abused and killed really gives off some serious Agrajag vibes.
6) I know they’re all voice actors. And that this, by definition, means I’ll run into their voices in other media. BUT IT’S ALL WEIRD NOW. It’s not like “oh, right, I know that voice, it’s [actor].” It’s now “THAT’S [character] FROM VOX MACHINA, WOW THIS FEELS WEIRD.” Which is great, because I have to watch a lot of anime for my work and this has made it much less boring.
