Mini-review:

I love Hirokazu Kore-eda's style, and you can feel his hand throughout the nine episodes, even if he worked with more people. This show is such a lovely, soothing and relaxing experience. Nothing much happens (it's a classic slice of life story), but if you enjoy its vibes, it never gets boring. Sure, maybe it could have used a doses or two of drama, but at the same time I feel like that would have shattered the peaceful atmosphere it carefully builds from the first episode. I do wish the show would have delved into the many controversies and problems that surround the maiko/geiko industry, specially considering Kore-eda has strongly supported the #MeToo movement within the Japanese film world, but, once again, I get that something like that would have gone against the whole point of the show.

Anyway, I feel like I'm rambling here. The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House is quite lovely and as well acted and sensitively written/directed as one could expect from Hirokazu Kore-eda. Also, make sure to watch it on a full stomach, cause there's a lot of delicious-looking food here that will certainly make you go hungry.

I wonder what the wild dog reference was about. It seemed Kazune did not make that bit up?

Even though this is the superior story of the two, I recommend first watching the companion movie, To Me, the One Who Loved You, to fully understand the whole story.

To Every You I've Loved Before is a 2022 Japanese animated film based on the novel of the same name by Yomoji Otono. It stars Hio Miyazawa, Ai Hashimoto, Aju Makita, Mutsumi Tamura, Kenji Hamada, Mie Sonozaki, Tomomichi Nishimura, Fumi Hirano, Miki Mizuno, Kimiko Yo, and Tokuma Nishioka.

The DMMd Stage Plays

No one asked, but I can’t shut up about them, so I thought I’d talk a bit about these.

There’s a tradition, it seems like, of making stage plays about just about every subject imaginable in Japan. Search any anime you’re into on youtube and add “stage play”, and you will find everything. There are stage plays for Haikyuu!, Demon Slayer, SK8 the Infinity, Sailor Moon, Persona 5, Sarazanmai, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Given, Ace Attorney... that’s just off the top of my head. The productions are always creative and interestingly staged. If you’re into theater at all, I do recommend investigating.

It was a bit of a surprise, no doubt, that a stage play for DMMd ran in 2019, given that the game came out seven years prior; still, it did well enough to warrant another run, so we can’t argue with that. The production ran over a two-week period (stage plays don’t seem to be long-running; following any of the actors on social media, you’ll see they do several plays a year), and what’s particularly fascinating is that they did all of the love interest routes in that time period on alternate days.

The cast is rounded out by four dancers who added to the background in a variety of ways; Hayato Moriya also played multiple roles as a member of Bug Bomb, the person welcoming Aoba to Platinum Jail, and so on.

This was apparently not the highest-budget production out there, but they got around that with a stage resembling a generic Rhyme field onto which could be projected a variety of images, using that and lighting to make its appearance change significantly to the plot.

Unfortunately, due to (I believe) contractual issues, DVDs were not released for this production. They were livestreamed, and the final route was pro-filmed and can be rented on JP Hulu and U-Next, but that’s all we got. Sadface. However, there was a special after-show “curtain call” segment where the audience was allowed to film on their phones, resulting in a wave of clips that can be viewed here. In a couple of cases, Goatbed also performed “AI Catch” for this segment.

There was a wave of merch released for the plays, including bromides (postcard-size, collectible pictures, many of which can be found on secondary markets), a pamphlet, can badges and such. One presumes we will have another round of these with the new production.

Now the new production is coming up at the end of April 2023, and in addition to being “evolved” from the last one, a Virus/Trip route has been added. It’ll be interesting to see how this goes down, since before, it was only hinted at during the final route.

Recently and devastatingly, it was announced that Seiichiro would not be able to perform as Aoba again. While he was part of the initial lineup for this new cast, the official twitter stated that due to illness, he was being forced to step down and the role was recast with understudy Tsuchiya Naotake. I sincerely hope that Seiichiro is getting better and wish him all the best. Hopefully this is something he’ll be able to bounce back from. What’s particularly shattering is that Seiichiro has been working with Shogo on the recent run of Touken Ranbu in whatever incarnation it’s on now, so to have them not be reunited again absolutely sucks.

In other casting news, both the roles of Trip and Akushima were recast. Trip is now being played by Isono Dai, and Akushima by Makita Tetsuya. Presumably the dancers are all new as well; at the very least, I don’t recognize any of their faces, though as all the cast photos have everyone masked for safety, that makes it more of a challenge. The play is being directed by the same person as before, however.

As to whether DVD/BRs will be released this time, we can only hope that the legal issues have been worked out and we’ll get actual releases. If not, I’m sure there will at least be livestreams, though I haven’t seen anything announced yet. We will no doubt need a VPN for them at minimum; beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see.

Couple of dorama notes to help me keep track of things, woop!

1) THE NEW EMPLOYEE NEW EPISODE, EEP!: I’m not going to peep the tag until after I watch it tonight. Now that I binged the manhwa, I think I know the direction of this episode, but I’m still looking forward to the NYS flashbacks and seeing how Jong Chan handles it.

2) The Makanai: Cooking For the Maiko House: A couple of IRL friends recommended this to me because they know I love shows about food -- I started it yesterday and I’m in full binge mode. It’s directed by the legendary Koreeda Hiroyuki, who directed After Life in the late 1990s and who now has the film Broker out (which is making its way around the awards circuit).

I hadn’t heard of this manga (Kiyo in Kyoto) before, but I understand it to be quite popular -- I even think NHK aired an anime of it. I want to take some time, if I can find it, to research the background and popularity of the manga, because I think the drama is a bit darker than it’s set up to be on the surface. Quickly: two 16-year-old girls leave Aomori Prefecture to apprentice as maiko, or junior geishas, in Kyoto. One of the teens is a natural at her training; the other teen (Kiyo) is expelled from the school and becomes the cook for the okiya (lodging house) (wild wild wild).

I admittedly know next to nothing about maiko/geisha culture, but it struck me as surprising that young teenagers can still leave school to apprentice and live in an okiya. (EDITING TO ADD: Phew, okay, this part is fictional, according to this interview.) I think there are a few stories being told underneath the surface (but I’m only on episode three) -- rivalries between friends and students, unrequited loves, and this undercurrent about young girls doing labor for the lodging house and for clients, including teenage maiko accompanying clients to bars.

I’m kind of in a whirlwind headspace to understand it all. BUT: THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS SPECTACULAR, and there are some great names acting in it, including Lily Frankie (I love this guy’s name so much), Morisaki Win (a darling from Three Star Bar in Nishi Ogikubo), and Makita Aju, who is simply killing it as an antagonist against maiko culture (and who also played an amazing foil as Micchan in Okaeri Mone). Also, Hashimoto Ai and Matsuoka Mayu going head to head -- their competition is totally sizzling.

I’ll have a bigger review of this, but it looks like this dorama is extremely popular in Japan, so I’m glad I’m catching up with it in real time. 

3) Besides my real-time BLs (The New Employee, Ameiro Paradox), I’m going to start on Bad Buddy later this week as part of my essential BL series, once I’m done with The Makanai. 

4) But ALSO: I found a three-part NHK miniseries called Ototo no Otto (My Brother’s Husband), from 2018 -- and I’m seriously excited for it, because I am a huge stan for NHK’s boundary-pushing work on discrimination. The show is about a Canadian man who comes to Japan after his same-sex Japanese partner passes away. The “widower” meets his late partner’s twin brother and the twin brother’s kids, all to learn more about his late partner’s life in Japan.

The show looks like it focuses on current issues regarding LGBTQ+ discrimination, including the homophobia that the late partner’s brother himself has -- which may have led to estrangement between the twins.

There’s only a few posts about this show on Tumblr, but the posts say the show was seriously good. I’m so glad I found it, and I think I’ll need to watch it before diving into Bad Buddy.

And after Bad Buddy: Dark Blue Kiss, to prepare for the eventual GMMTV adaptation of Cherry Magic, which damn it -- I still can’t shake. 

5) FINALLY: Um, we may be getting new The Novelist/The Pornographer material?! (cc @gillianthecat). According to Twitter, there will be an announcement about something related to the franchise on 1/24. Let’s see -- the very last short film hasn’t been translated or released internationally, so maybe that’s the update? Give us SOMETHING, FUJI TV.

How do you sum up your life story in one line today, just in case your expiration date is tomorrow?

While Carrerrra is playing so early in June 2024's last Monday, I remember the tears that fell each time I visited mother dragon. The lapida is like a marker that bears her name and how she is best remembered. Walang halong kemikal at natural lang pagkatao niya. Unapologetic pa.

-It's French kasi 'yung maiden name niya (last name) is Frenching talaga and feeling ko talaga andun ang roots ko

-It's both good and bad which is what mom is (like the rest of the world).

While anhedonia is my default state of mind and being, seeing mom's final destination visually means shedding a tear or two. Yes. We don't ngalngal in public as much as we can po, opo. Ego e. Pride e. Last Saturday, I found myself walking a familiar path but this time, Dad is downing his daily steps. OPAK. Character arc development right there. Not bad for this 64-year-old pakitong-kitong, right? On a good day, he does 6K.

However, his hips and legs are starting to shake. I could have gone 10K with him as a wing girl even when it's friggin' hot outside. I've been checking his walk. May mali. May super mali. His form is not forming. I egged him and challenged him to gun for 20K steps. Anak, 2K tama na. Sakit e. Hahahaha. There, there, there. He still doesn't want to go all out in his PT sessions. FUCK. Ang lapit sa puntod ng nanay ko. However, it's super curious because ka-vibe niya mom ko. Inis na inis ako nung una kong nakita. Pero, ayun na e. Iba pa rin ang OG. LELS. 'Di rin maganda layout so, keep up. When my lola died, my dad requested me to customize the design of lapida. Wala kasi kasing pantiyong na sarili lola at lolo ko. LOL. Literal na nakikilagay lang kami ng sa ancestors nung lolo ko. And hassle puntahan kasi need mong mag-over the nitso ng slight. Sabi ni dad, naggawa ko naman ng mom ko, so dapat mas pak sa lola at lolo ko. LOL. In fairness, may pa-masaleo na sila ngayon. How po? From the hati ng family namin sa lupa sa Nasugbu na nabenta sa isang old couple in cash. Hahahahaha. Imagine, that had to wait for so many years? As a middle class from the gutters, syempre palakpak tenga na naman tatay ko. 'Di daw niya sukat akalain magkaka-masaleo sila. With pigil luha at tulo uhog pa 'yan, bitch.

Me: Wala namang difference 'yan. Ending, patay pa rin naman. Memorial parks are for the living. For posterity lang 'yan, honestly. It does not make sense at all. Periodtzzz. Since it's a collab between me, dad and his boomer siblings, mhieee, jusq. Mga 3 weeks na yata kaming nanenegosyahon. And hindi naman din bayad so 'yung pake ko, wala. CHOZ. Dad actually came up with my lolo and lola's one-liner. Pasado sa akin for the first time with tiny tweaks here and there. SIMPLENG PAGMAMAHALAN, NGAYO'Y MAGKAPILING NA SA WALANG HANGGAN. Opak. ± A slice of a different kind of life. Thus, not very predictable and i was a little lost but the characters and the heart is where it's at. The final episode was an unexpected tear jerker. Just something about achieving things with that kind of support and the bond between soulmates just pulled the happy tears from me. Or maybe sad tears of missing my own best friend ahead of when she was going to leave the country.

Prompt: Red comes home to purok onse from the prison and Tox runs to him to welcome him back

Pagkarating namin sa Purok Onse, agad na sinabi ni Lola Heart sa namamasada, “Dito na lang.” Pagkahinto nito, saka kami nagpasalamat kay kuya.

Ahh, nagbabalik na ang pinakagwapong blondie ng Purok Onse!

Binalik ko ang tingin ko kay Lola Heart. “Lola Heart, salamat ah? Hindi niyo ako pinabayaan.” Kadiri, pero totoo naman ‘yon. Hindi ako sanay na ganito pa-sweet kahit kay Lola Heart kaya dinagdagan ko ng biro, “Alam ko naman na… mahal niyo ako eh.”

Pabiro niya akong sinampal sa mukha. “Hanggang ngayon, nagdududa ka pa rin?! Samantalang nung bata ka pa, nung tinuli ka, ako ang naglalanggas ng ano mo—”

Pinigilan ko si Lola Heart sa sasabihin niya dahil sa lakas ng boses niya. Tila namula ang mga pisngi ko dahil paniguradong rinig na rinig ‘yon ng mga kapitbahay namin. “H’wag kang maingay! Nakakahiya!” I hissed.

Nanatili ang tono niyang pagalit. “Basta ikaw! H’wag kang aako-ako ng kasalanan nang may kasalanan!” patuloy na parangal niya sa akin. “Nako! Tumaas ang dugo ko sa ‘yo!”

Hindi ko mapigilang ngumisi dahil sa mga parangal ni Lola Heart sa akin. Kahit hindi ko siya kadugo, ramdam ko ang pagmamahal niya sa akin bilang apo. Kaya naman agad ko siyang nilambing, “Sorry na, ‘La.”

“H’wag mo nang uulitin ‘yon, ha?” bilin niya sa akin.

Syempre, um-oo na lang ako kasi baka mas uminit pa ang ulo niya sa akin. Pero kung tatanungin man ako kung uulitin ko yung ginawa ko para kay Eloy… sasabihin kong oo. Para ko na ring kapatid si Eloy eh. Sa lahat ng pagkakataong kinailangan ko ng tulong, sinalo niya ako. Kaya ganun din ang gagawin ko sa kanya. Kahit paulit-ulit ko pang gawin ‘yon.

Habang pinapagalitan ako ni Lola Heart, naaninag ko si Daddy Ays na suot ang isa sa mga paborito niyang red polo shirt. Masaya niya akong binati saka nakipagkamay.

Kaunting lingon ko lang sa kanan ay nakita ko si Tox. Ewan ko kung bakit nung si Tox na yung nakikita ko, biglang bumagal ang ikot ng mundo. Hindi nagbago ang itsura niya. Ganun pa rin—maikli pa rin ang buhok niya, may maliit na nakatali sa tuktok niya. Ganun pa rin ang kulay ng buhok niya—black sa roots pero blonde sa may tips—tulad ng akin.

Unti-unting nagliwanag ang mukha niya nang makita niya ako. Malaki ang ngiti niya habang tumatakbo papalapit sa akin. Rinig ko ang bigat ng tibok ng puso ko sa bawat hakbang niya papalapit sa akin.

Tama bang nararamdaman ko ‘to sa tropa ko? O baka conscious lang ako kasi alam kong crush niya ako?

Sa pagyakap niya sa akin nang mahigpit, para bang nagkaroon ng sariling utak ang mga braso ko dahil agad ko rin siyang niyakap. Sa liit niyang ‘to, pwedeng-pwede kong isandal ang ulo ko sa ulo niya.

Sa ikli ng braso niya, kinailangan niya akong yakapin gamit ang dalawang kamay niya para mayakap ako nang buo. Samantalang kasyang-kasya na siya sa isang kamay ko pa lang, pero hinayaan ko na lang din yung isa kong kamay na yakapin siya.

Hinayaan kong tumagal ang yakap naming dalawa dahil… basta! Eh kasi… baka na-miss niya ang crush niya, ‘di ba?
