Remembering the early days of the DW revival in North America
Tumblr media
(You never saw this in the UK or US) (Source)
With the return of Russell T Davies upon us, there’s a lot of nostalgia for the early days of the Doctor Who revival, the years before ... well, name a controversy. Lots of hope in the fanbase that RTD will be able to bring back the feels of the early days (and not just among those who were too young to remember the heady days of 2005-2010). There’s also a lot of hand-wringing over the fact that outside the UK the series will be part of the Disney+ family. But non-UK networks have always influenced the show in a lot of ways.
Not everything was good - I have some real negatives below - but here’s a quick list of memories of the early years of the revival, which began at a time the mainstream in North America was still very much of the mind of “Doctor who?” and dismissed it as a grainy old series that usually aired after Monty Python on PBS after midnight on Saturdays.
I remember:
* When we had to wait months between UK and Canadian broadcasts. Just imagine trying to avoid spoilers today!
* When the Sci-Fi Channel in the US allegedly rejected the show for quality reasons. So many American fans didn’t get to see the first series with Eccleston for about a year (or had to order the DVDs).
* When Series 1 did air in Canada, the CBC had Christopher Eccleston record intros, commercial bumpers and “final comments” that included a mixture of trivia and promos for a “visit the set of Series 2″ contest being done with the Canadian edition of TV Guide (ironic, I know). By the time Christmas Invasion aired, Chris had left so they had Billie Piper do the intros and bumpers for it. They dropped the gimmick for Series 2. Thanks to the TV Guide tie-in, Doctor Who also got its first-ever cover on the iconic magazine, albeit only in Canada.
* When most episodes of Series 1 ended on the CBC with short documentaries and interviews with the Canadian DW fan club; one of them I believe was responsible for spreading the notion that the 1996 TV movie was titled “The Enemy Within” (which was just a suggested title apparently).
* The difficulty in getting the Series 1 DVD sets in Canadian stores due to the “Doctor who?” factor. I recall I had to special order and it cost me close to $100 in 2005 or 2006 money. And at the time only one DVD retailer (back when they could be referred to in the plural sense) would touch it. Amazon wasn’t a thing yet.
* The CBC not airing the part of “World War III” that resolved the cliffhanger of “Aliens of London”. For the CBC that was their “dancing animated Graham Norton” moment.
* How the CBC, after the initial flurry of interest, seemingly forgot about the show (a charge made by the main Canadian DW fan club a few years later), resulting in Runaway Bride airing after Series 3 began, the main CBC never airing Voyage of the Damned at all (leaving the Series 3 cliffhanger unresolved), and airing a 42-minute edit of “Journey’s End” that was totally incomprehensible (and delaying the broadcast until after the DVD release of Season 4). Torchwood likewise was bounced around. Soon after, the CBC cancelled Doctor Who and Space Channel (now CTV Sci-Fi) picked it up, eventually airing Voyage of the Damned and moving to same-day broadcast with the UK. They also picked up Torchwood. (Sarah Jane Adventures only aired on the BBC Kids cable network and either was cancelled or the network folded so we mostly saw it on DVD only; K9 never aired here at all, but again was on DVD.)
* The CBC also never showed the Children in Need minisodes, so I believe we had to wait for DVDs before seeing the prequel to Christmas Invasion and the Time Crash crossover.
* The sea-change when Series 5 arrived; Sci-Fi (Syfy) in the US and Space were now airing it the same day as the UK, though for here they added a US-style prologue to the opening credits with Amy explaining the concept of Doctor Who.
* When Sci-Fi aired Let’s Kill Hitler in the US with a special animated mini-episode during the commercial break promoting a sponsor - something that would be absolutely unheard of on the BBC! (It used to be on Youtube but I can’t find it anymore.)
* The “good old days” when most of the “good stuff” (basically anything involving video or gaming) on the BBC’s main Doctor Who website was “geolocked” and inaccessible to North American visitors. Fortunately this didn’t include the minisodes created to promote Series 2, but people had to sail the high seas (or later turn to Youtube) to obtain stuff like the mini-episode Karen Gillan made as a tie-in with an Amy Pond game and some of the scripted stuff Sarah Jane Adventures had on its site, and the Captain Jack’s Monster Files webseries starring John Barrowman.
A lot of this is in the past - as far as I know there are no longer restrictions on BBC website content (or if there is, it ends up on Youtube in about 10 minutes anyway); same-day broadcast is the norm; it’s easy to get DW-related DVDs and Blu-rays (though it remains to be seen if we ever see anything from RTD 2.0 on permanent media here in North America with Disney+ in the picture); and the idea of Syfy or CTV Sci-Fi - or certainly Disney+ - taking a 75-minute episode and trimming 30 minutes out of it for broadcast as was done to Journey’s End is impossible to imagine. Sadly though, at least for now, the enthusiasm for the show where people did care that Let’s Kill Hitler had an extra scene for the US only, or that Billie and Chris recorded exclusive materal for the CBC ... it too is in the past. I hope RTD is able to restore it and prove you can go home again.

Do you buy travel insurance before you travel? Any recommendations?
No my wildly amazing credit card covers everything I need on vacation (trip cancellation/insurance/rental car insurance/medical emergencies) - it takes them a while to pay out policies but everything I've submitted I've gotten back. And the POINTS!!
Also this card doesn't charge traditional 2.5% conversion rates when you're international, which for a traveller is amazing (so much less hassle!). No they don't hire me to schmooze I just love it that much.

Why Having a 24 hour cancellation policy allows you more flexibility when making changes to plans
The flexibility provided by the 24 hour cancellation policy is one of its main advantages. Travelers can purchase flights with confidence since they have a full day to make any necessary changes. This can be especially helpful if you are still deciding on your trip itinerary or are awaiting confirmation from other sources.
Financial Calm
Unexpected changes might raise the expense of travel which can already be pricey. This is lessened by Air Canada 24 hour cancellation policy which lets you reschedule and cancel without incurring any fees. This might be especially helpful if you need to change your vacation dates or locate a better offer.
Stress-Free Reservation
It can be stressful to book flights, particularly if you're not sure where you're going or when you're going. A portion of this anxiety is alleviated by the 24 hour cancellation policy which offers a risk free window for modifications. This might lessen the stressful and increase the enjoyment of the booking procedure.
Advice on How to Maximize the 24-Hour Cancellation Policy
Make a reservation early.
Make early reservations to benefit from the 24-hour cancellation policy. In this manner, you can reserve the flight and fare of your choice and still have time to make any necessary adjustments.
Verify Travel Information Again
Verify any travel-related information such as dates, times and passenger details once you've made your reservation. Within the 24-hour window, you can quickly cancel and rebook if you find any issues.
Keep Track of Fare Changes
The price of airfare may fluctuate frequently. After making your reservation be aware of any fare changes. If within 24 hours of making your first reservation you find a more affordable ticket or a more convenient flight you can cancel and rebook without incurring any charges.
Make Good Use of the Time
Make use of the 24-hour window to complete any unfinished travel arrangements, including lodging, vehicle rentals, and activities while you're there. This can guarantee that the planning of your entire trip is seamless.
Many Concerns Regarding the 24-Hour Cancellation Policy
Does every reservation fall within the 24-hour cancellation policy?
Yes regardless of the fare class, all reservations booked directly with Air Canada are subject to the 24 hour cancellation policy.
Can I cancel a flight that I have reserved through a different travel company?
Direct reservations made with Air Canada are normally subject to the 24 hour cancellation policy. Check the cancellation terms of the third party travel agency if you made your reservation there since they can be different.
How can I get my money back?
Refunds for cancellations made during the 24-hour period will be applied to the original payment method. Depending on how you made the payment, it can take a few business days for the refund to show up in your account.
What happens if I have to modify my flight rather than cancel it?
If you need to adjust your flight instead of canceling Air Canada provides ways to amend your reservation. If, however, you decide to switch to a more expensive flight, fare changes can apply.
Do all routes provide the 24-hour cancellation policy?
Although all routes often have a 24-hour cancellation period, it's a good idea to check the exact terms and circumstances that apply to your reservation.
To sum up
Air Canada 24 hour cancellation policy is a helpful feature that offers customers flexibility and peace of mind. The process will be made simpler and easier if you are aware that you can cancel without being charged within 24 hours of booking a trip or organizing an unplanned holiday. By following this guide's rules and understanding how the policy works, you can make the most of this perk and enjoy a more flexible travel experience. Happy travels!

Flight cancelations and hummingbirds.
Classic story of a girl meeting a guy, falling in love, girl living in a new country for 6 years then having him break up with her over facetime when she is in another country, during a pandemic after they buy a house together.
This is how I found myself back in Birmingham, England after being away and struggling through life for three years. A beautiful and wonderful friend was marrying her beloved and they had asked me to officiate the wedding. I had previously considered the whole country of England to be dead to me but one can not say no to love. I packed my things and wrote one heck of a sermon for the wedding. While writing it I saw a hummingbird. I asked a Qu'wutsun friend of mine if hummingbirds meant anything special on this land. He said it was good luck before a trip. I felt like I had my ancestors on my side and took off to England. The trip was wonderful. Re-connecting with so many people and visiting these old places that felt like they were taken from me- it gave me the closure I didn't think I needed and didn't expect was waiting for me in the west midlands.
Leaving was a bit trickier. There are no hummingbirds in England.
I am no stranger to airport struggles so I try to go into a travel day without too much stress, I know there will be enough coming my way! My generous and gracious friend drove me to the Manchester airport, a 90 minute drive from her lovely river side home in Yorkshire and I have to admit I was sleepy. Tired because we went mountain biking and had a BBQ the day before and it was 8am but also because the two week trip was emotionally exhausting. Connecting with some of my most precious friends for two weeks really was a dream but it had left my social and emotional battery completely flat. I had no charge nor did I have anything left in the tank to even try to start... clearly I don't know how engines work. We talked in the car, soaking up the last little bit of in-person connection that we would get for the next while and in the middle of the ride I got a message from Air Canada saying my flight was 30 minutes delayed. No problem, I thought, gives me just a bit more time for security and a coffee. We hugged good bye and I said farewell to the English sun- something that had JUST come out in my last departing days. Manchester security was a thing to behold. New signs were up around x-rays explaining all the things that were considered liquid: hair gel, lotion, mascara, solid lip balms, solid deodorant.. wait... I have my travel packing to an art and travelled only carry on for this two weeks, but that was only possible because most of my traditionally liquid things are now solid- shampoo, deodorant, moisturizer- and really if something is a solid, how can it be considered a liquid? I was too far in line to change anything and I didn't have enough room in my 1L bag anyway. I assumed secondary screening would be inevitable. But then I noticed a video screen that showed off how many other people either didn't understand the rules or were hoping to get by with a cheeky "whoops!, didn't understand that a solid was a liquid, mate!" The screen said that 90% of bags going through this queues x rays were failing and needing secondary inspection. I looked past the human metal detector and saw lines and lines and lines of bags waiting for security to go through them under the watchful eye of the less than patient Manchester travellers. 35 minutes later I waved to the security agent who lifted up my bag and asked who it belonged to, I went over and he asked if I could open it. I opened up the pocket that kept my solid deodorant and he told me they consider this a liquid. I said, I was sorry and didn't realise that. My purse had also been flagged and he asked if I had a laptop in it. I did not but I did trave with a small collapsible keyboard. I often didn't even take it out anymore at airports because no one seemed to care when I showed them. I took it out of my purse, and he wiggled it, jiggled it, tested it for explosives and said it was fine. I was then allowed on my way. I was still about 90 minutes early for the flight so I went to get a coffee. While in line I heard our Air Canada flight was delayed another hour. Hmm, guess I will get this coffee for here, I thought. Another announcement said it would be delayed another 2 hours. There was really nothing else to do but have a cookie with my coffee so I did that. I then walked to a comfy chair in front of a screen and had a sit down. Listening to a podcast and playing some silly phone game, I glanced up at the screen and apparently the flight was delayed another hour. I took out an ear phone and heard an announcement saying my Air Canada flight had been cancelled and we should make our way to an info desk. A woman beside me remarked to her travel partner that she would be 'fumin!!' if this happened to her. I glanced over and said: jeez, it's annoying, eh? She asked if I was on that flight, I said yes and she sat their stunned that I wasn't melting down. I told her there wasn't much to do, may as well see what they have to say. I walked off and joined a few hundred people standing in line that presumably started at an Air Canada desk. Another announcement told us they had no information but they would in 40 minutes. We looked at each other confused. So do we stand here? or sit down? Or something completely different. I updated friends in England that their country was obsessed with me and it looked like I would be here for a bit longer. 40(ish) minutes later we were told to go to gate 208 to disembark and eventually get our baggage. We didn't really know what that meant but we walked towards gate 208. Some people brushed past each other, racing to who knows what. This got rolled eyes and a few heavy sighs until one woman slipped past the wrong couple. The Northerners had no time for this nonsense and told her there was no point in rushing, we weren't going anywhere. She had no time or his antics and told him to piss off. He told her to piss off even louder. I looked at a stranger beside me and laughed: this is great! We got to the gate and were told to sit and wait. We twiddled our thumbs, muttered under our breathes and generally zoned out. Suddenly an Air Canada agent said we could collect our bags. After that? Who knows. We went to baggage and I promptly left since I didn't have any to wait for. There were no agents waiting for us so I thought maybe going to Departures would make sense? Perhaps there was an Air Canada desk that could help. The Air Canada check-in desk was about to be a ghost town as the agents hurried away, I quickly asked where their info desk was. They told me there wasn't one. ... okay. They said maybe ask a Tui Agent? I waited for the mass of stranded passengers to come upstairs, feeling very accomplished and cool that I would be the first person in line when they got there. I found the Tui desk and honestly I have no idea what was happening but a woman was angrily counting out pence and handing them over to the agent. It was taking ages and I was seeing no stranded passengers so I went to a different desk and asked if maybe it made sense I was up in Departures if my flight was cancelled. Bless Virgin Atlantic because the agent told me she had no idea but if this happened to Virgin they would put us on coaches to bring us to a hotel and those would pick us up downstairs at Arrivals. As I walked back to Arrivals and recognized someone who also came upstairs. She had a cute tattoo of a dog with hearts around it, I decided she would be a safe person to ask wtf. She told me someone told her to come up here and find an agent. We both went back to Tui where the strange interaction was STILL happening and waited in line. We continued to be the only people waiting and I said it was questionable we were the only people who got this right and we should go downstairs. We went downstairs and some Air Canada agents were standing in a circle. "Hi! I don't know what I'm doing" I figured acting like a complete boob would help me get as much information as possible. They asked if I was a stranded passenger and I tried not to be sarcastic. They pointed to two coaches and said we could get on. Where are we going? I asked. They did not know. I went to the first coach and asked if we just get on. The driver asked what hotel I was going to. I said I didn't know. He laughed at me and said I really should know. I pointed to the AC agent and said they told me to come here. He yelled to them that we really should know what hotel we were going to. My mood was wearing thin. Should we just get on? I asked. He walked away to make fun of the situation with the other driver. We got on the coach. England was in it's first full day of a heat wave so the bus was approximately 1000 degrees. As we all settled into the bus we remarked how we didn't know anything other than it was very warm. Would we be paying for the hotel? For food? For the coach even? Who knows?! We start to drive around airport city, past a few okay hotels and stop in the middle of a traffic circle outside the parking lot and hedge around the Delta Marriot. The coach driver opens the door. Someone says- are we here? He says, yes, and gets out to open up the baggage compartment. We all look around at each other most of us letting out exasperated laughter. This is amazing I laugh as I look around at the traffic trying to get navigate around us. We exit while being parked in the middle of this traffic circle and walk through a hole in the hedgerow, through the parking lot and into the lobby. We are welcomed by the staff and told that dinner would be from 6 to 8. I quickly head to my room to lay down and have some alone time. I turn on the TV to find either a reno show or a baking show- the only things one can watch in a hotel room- unless its morning then breakfast news or 24 hour news networks are permissible. I unpack some of my bag and find liquid eye drops, two gel lip sticks, mascara and moisturiser. All things more liquid than my solid deodorant. My phone buzzes and it's a text from Air Canada. I have a new flight! In two days. I laugh out loud.. now people will be fumin! I go to dinner and see my tattooed friend, she has made another friend and we eat together. Burgers for them, curry for me. And a complimentary glass of wine! Spare no expenses, they did! People are on their phones with baby sitters, dog sitters, cruise lines, hotels, spouses, travel agent and anyone else who will hear their pleas. I sip my wine and tell my new friends about my time in England. One is Canadian just coming from from a cruise and the other is English just going to Canada for a visit. We all feel we can take it as it is. A free night in a hotel isn't the worst thing. The next morning I wake up for breakfast, stuff myself to the gills with beans, toast, marmite and coffee. I then go back to sleep for a few hours. This two weeks had taken so much out of me, I didn’t mind this stop in purgatory. I meet my friends for lunch and we discuss our plans for the day. I am happy enough to sleep, read and use the hotel gym. None of us are particularly interested in spending 40 quid to get into city centre. I am so exhausted from my trip I really see this as a nice sleepy get away. I check out the prices in the mini bar. A can of wine is 10 quid, about 20 Canadian dollars. I stick with my free drink with dinner. Wednesday comes and we find out some passengers were sent earlier to Dublin, Europe and America so they could get to their final destinations without clogging up one flight path. It does seem that two nights in a hotel continues to be not a hardship, just weird. I ask the front desk if a coach will pick us up again or if we take the airport shuttle, I'm told a bus at 9am will pick us up for our 12:05 flight. There is a lot of chatter amongst all us stranded passengers about how bad communication is with the airline. No one knows anything unless we talk to the front desk. information trickles down like wealth is meant to. 9am comes and there is no bus. 9:10 we see a bus but it's not coming in, it's idling down the road. While it's not in a traffic circle, it's just as goofy. I go down to see if it's ours. It is. I wave to everyone and say: follow me! There is less frustration in the air but no one seems to trust we will be making it out. At every step we have been confused, left in the dark and forced to ask the poor front desk staff if they know anything. They have been so kind and added the times of the meals at the end of every single one of my queries, clearly they know my heart. My new travel friends both seem nervous about security and timing. I assure them it will be annoying but we will not miss this flight. I pack as well I as I can but my deodorant won't fit in my small clear plastic litre bag so I again am okay with waiting, this time the screen tells me that only 5% of bags are going through secondary screening. The agent asks me to open my bag, I make the same joke about my solid being more solid than liquid and apologise again. This one is as impervious to my charm as the last. Me and my stranded friends are on our way. We get a coffee and head to the gate. We are told our plane is having some issues and will be delayed 30 minutes. Then we are told there is a longer delay. There is then an announcement that anyone who is a stranded passenger should go to another gate as there is another Air Canada flight leaving just after ours. Bewildered, 50 of us walk to the other gate and ask what is going on. The gate agents tell us we are at the wrong gate. We tell them we know, but were told to come here. They tell us we were not. I tell them it's improbable that 50 of us misheard the announcement. They get on a walkie talkie and confirm with our original gate. We wait 5 minutes as there is rapid fire walkie talkie conversations. Then an agent from this new gate stomps to our original gate. After another 5 minutes of what looks like some emotional conversation he comes back and said there was never an announcement we need to go back. We go back and the gate agent loudly tells another passenger she never said that. There are a few remarks about gaslighting but we sit back down. The maintenance something something gets resolved and we start boarding. We all hold our breathes and after another 20 minute delay, the doors close and we start to head to Canada.
And that is the story of why I slept for three days after visiting the United Kingdom in September and why I think we should introduce hummingbirds to every country in the world.

Last year was rocky for Canadian airlines, with hundreds of flight delays and canceled flights from major carriers like Air Canada, WestJet, and Sunwing.
With 2023 not proving to be much better, travelers may be what they're entitled to if their flight is delayed or canceled. If you're in this boat, the Canadian Transportation Agency has information about passenger rights in Canada.
According to the CTA, when an airline delay or cancels a flight, what passengers may be entitled to depend on the level of control that the airline has over the reason for the delay or cancellation.
There are three different kinds of situations, and each warrants a different outcome in terms of compensation. The delay or cancellation could be within the airline's control but required for safety or outside the airline's control.
According to the CTA, issues considered within an airline's control include staffing issues, decisions to consolidate flights due to low demand, and disruptions due to scheduled maintenance.
If your flight is canceled or delayed due to one of these reasons, the CTA says that, when applicable, airlines must offer you alternative travel arrangements or provide you with a refund as pay you.
In situations, travel arrangements are to be provided free of charge if your flight is canceled and for flight delays of three hours or more says.
They must also provide assistance in certain circumstances like the delay or cancellation less than 12 hours before their original departure time and waiting two hours or more since the original.
In this case, the airline must provide a "reasonable amount of food and drink" at no charge, as well as access to means of communication (such as Wi-Fi or a prepaid calling card) and overnight accommodation that's free of charge, including transportation, if the disruption means a passenger will now have to wait overnight for their flight.
When the issue, however, is within the airline's control but required for safety, it doesn't have to provide compensation. It does, however, have to meet the other obligations if the disruption wasn't.
For situations outside the airline's control, like extreme weather or security incidents, the airline doesn't have to provide you with compensation accommodations. It does, however, have to make alternate travel arrangements for passengers or issue a refund in some cases.
You can find more specific information about what each airline offers online, like WestJet flight cancellations and delays and those from Air Canada.
Airlines have to compensate passengers if the notice for the delay or cancellation comes 14 days or less before their departure time. If you take a ticket refund instead of other travel arrangements, the airline still has to compensate you for the inconvenience. Large airlines must pay $400 airlines to have to pay $125.
If you experience a problem while flying, you'll first airline writing about the issue. If you're unhappy with the reply airline didn't reply at all, you can then contact the CTA and ask them to review your case.
It's worth noting though CTA is currently dealing with a backlog of traveler complaints — Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra said on March 14 that the number of complaints was most recently at 42,000.
The minister announced $75.9 million in additional funding over three years, starting this year, to help ensure that the CTA has the resources to address the complaints.

Requesting a refund
You booked a ticket through AirCanada but the pandemic made you change your mind? Please remember to request a refund via your original point of purchase as each person has a unique booking system that we don’t get access to & they are better equipped to assist us when it comes to requesting a refund. If you booked directly through Air Canada, you may cancel your booking online by visiting My Bookings. While doing the Air Canada reservation, we hope you haven’t faced any issues. Likewise, when you want to cancel it online due to certain reasons or emergencies, we will surely assist you to get it done. Air Canada being one of the best airlines flying in Canada makes us trust them for our comfortable flight and easy access to their online system. They’re very much responsive to their customers.
If you want to cancel your Air Canada reservation, you must do it 24 hours before your flight’s actual boarding time so that the person can get a refund according to the ticket fare class without getting charged extra cancellation fees. You can even get back your ticket fare simply by requesting the booking cost you have given for the reservation. Before applying for any refund for your cancellation just make sure whether your ticket is refundable or not, because the flight has certain policies over certain tickets, and not every ticket has permitted refunds. If any ticket has written ‘non-refundable’ that clearly suggests that you won’t get a refund for your booking for ticket cancellation.
At the initial level open the official site of Air Canada with your registered account.
Log in with your credentials.
After you are logged in, select the option ‘Manage My Booking’ at the top corner of the page.
One way to cancel is to go with the Single Flight Booking option which requires your registration number, last name, and if any credit card has been used at the time of booking then its number.
And the second one is by signing in to the ‘All Booking’ option in your account, then selecting the booking icon and cancelling whatever reservation you want to do.
After cancelling, a confirmation message is received in the registered email ID.
In partial refund tickets, your refund value will be credited and can be used in your future flight booking with Air Canada. This can be done by directly calling customer care and at the time of booking through this refund, contact Air Canada Reservation. If you are having a non-refundable ticket, which you cancelled online, then the fare accommodated with the ticket will be stored and will be credited at the time of booking in the future. And whenever you will be using the refund you get or credit amount in your future flight ticket booking. Then must remember you can do so only by contacting directly to Air Canada Reservation. In case Air Canada cancels a flight itself due to some technical issues or it may be bad weather conditions then passengers can get a full refund after requesting a refund. Even if passengers want to make arrangements on the next available date then passengers can contact the support staff executives and ask for the same. Air Canada makes their policies which are fully customer-oriented. In case a flight is delayed more than 3 hours they determine this as their fault and give a customer full right to take back ticket charges after cancellation. Air Canada gives the option to convert the cancelled booking to an Air Canada Travel Voucher. This is absolutely transferable and by no means will expire until a given time.

“HUNGRY. DESPERATE SHOPBREAKER'S PLEA,” Toronto Star. March 1, 1933. Page 2.  ---- Man Captured at Midnight) Is Remanded in Custody ---- Frederick Henry, who was caught by officers Fred Bevan and Fred Paveling, after breaking a window and entering a Yonge St. grocery store last midnight, came before Magistrate Jones in police court to-day and was ordered remanded in custody one week.
Henry pleaded guilty to shop-breaking and told the officers who arrested him that he was desperate from hunger, had work and couldn't pay his room rent.
Patrol Sergt. Bevan was walking with P.C. Paveling at the corner of Charles and Yonge Sts. when they heard glass breaking.
Their investigations took them to the rear of a grocery store where there is a large fence. Turning his flashlight on. P.S. Bevan looked through the cracks of the fence and noticed a rear window in the grocery store broken. He helped P.C. Paveling over the fence and ran around to the front to prevent whoever was in the store escaping by this entrance.

Paris points to environmental concerns and Qatar’s human-rights record in joining giant-screen boycott of World Cup next month
PARIS (AP) — Paris will not broadcast World Cup matches on giant screens in public fan zones amid concerns over violations of the human rights of migrant workers and the environmental impact of the tournament in Qatar.
It follows similar moves by other French cities, even as France enters the World Cup as the defending champion, having topped Croatia in the final of the 2018 tournament, hosted by Russia. Some other European teams or federations are also looking at ways to protest.
From the archives (June 2018): Nafta partners U.S., Canada and Mexico celebrate FIFA nod to jointly host World Cup
Key Words (June 2018): Iceland snatches victory in 1–1 draw with Argentina
Pierre Rabadan, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of sports, told reporters in the French capital that the decision against public broadcasting of matches is due to “the conditions of the organization of this World Cup, both on the environmental and social level.”
He said in an interview with France Blue Paris that “air-conditioned stadiums” and the “conditions in which these facilities have been built are to be questioned.”
Rabadan stressed that Paris is not boycotting the soccer tournament, but explained that Qatar’s “model of staging big events goes against what [Paris] wants to organize [as host of the 2024 Olympics].”
The move comes despite the city’s big-spending football club, Paris Saint-Germain, being owned by Qatar Sports Investments.
“We have very constructive relations with the club and its entourage, yet it doesn’t prevent us to say when we disagree,” Rabadan said.
Denmark is staging its own protest: Its team jerseys at the World Cup will include a black option to honor migrant workers who died during construction work for the tournament. And several European soccer federations want their captains to wear an armband with a rainbow heart design during World Cup games to campaign against discrimination.
A growing number of French cities are refusing to erect screens to broadcast World Cup matches to protest Qatar’s human-rights record.
The mayor of Strasbourg, the seat of the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights, cited allegations of rights abuses and exploitation of migrant workers in Qatar as the reason for canceling public broadcasts of the World Cup.
“It’s impossible for us to ignore the many warnings of abuse and exploitation of migrant workers by nongovernmental organizations,” Jeanne Barseghian said in a statement. “We cannot condone these abuses, we cannot turn a blind eye when human rights are violated.”
And then, there’s the impact on the environment, Barseghian said. “While climate change is a palpable reality, with fires and droughts and other disaster, organizing a soccer tournament in the desert defies common sense and amounts to an ecological disaster,” she said.
Arnaud Deslandes, a deputy mayor of Lille, said that by canceling public viewing of matches, the northern city wanted to send a message to FIFA about the irreparable damage of the Qatar tournament to the environment.
“We want to show FIFA that money is not everything,” Deslandes told the Associated Press in an interview.
As for residents’ reactions to the city’s decision, he added: “I have yet to meet a person in Lille who was disappointed by our decision.”
The gas-rich emirate has been fiercely criticized in the past decade for its treatment of migrant workers, mostly from south Asia, who were needed to build tens of billions of dollars’ worth of stadiums, metro lines, roads and hotels.
Tumblr media
Qatar has been equally fierce in denying accusations of human-rights abuses, and has repeatedly rejected allegations that the safety and health of 30,000 workers who built the World Cup infrastructure have been jeopardized.
Qatar has also said that it is mindful of environmental concerns and has committed to offsetting some of the carbon emissions from the World Cup events through creating new green spaces irrigated with recycled water and building alternative-energy projects.
Environmental activists across France have supported the cancellation of public broadcasting in fan zones because outdoor viewing of the Nov. 20–Dec. 19 tournament would use energy that the country has been storing for winter.
In the southwestern city of Bordeaux, authorities cited concerns with the energy cost associated with outdoor public broadcasts in the winter cold. The French government is calling for a sharp 10% reduction in the country’s energy use to avoid the risk of rationing this winter amid tensions with supplier Russia over the war in Ukraine.
“We are trying hard to save energy,” Bordeaux mayor Pierre Hurmic told the AP. He added: “It doesn’t make sense to roll out the red carpet to such a costly event in terms of energy and the environmental impact.”

Goku Z2 can almost flawlessly block all oncoming attacks, making it near impossible to punish its attacks, or punish it overall, though due to the safeness of its attacks, Goku Z2 can quite easily punish its opponent's attacks. is horrifically aggressive, tough and can be quite cheap, spamming projectiles from afar, using its Power Charge when it's safe to do so, and performing lengthy combos a common combo Goku Z2 performs when at a distance is firing several Ki Blasts and following it up with a Kamehameha, to which it then proceeds to rush up to the opponent and combo them further with close-ranged attacks. Unlike many other Dragon Ball characters, Goku Z2 cannot fly around the stage, instead making use of multi-directional Air Dashing. It has many mechanics and features as its disposal, with abilities such as Super Jump, Power Charge, Chain Combos, Air Combos, Hyper Combos, EX Specials and a Focus Attack that doubles up as a projectile counter (named Slap Chop). I’ll think another reason why it’s upsetting that the season 2 cliffhanger ending of mbav won’t be resolved is because no broadcasts were wanting to pick the show up which is nuts to me cause who won’t want to see new seasons of a show like that but apparently to the executives it was too dark and mature for them compared to other kid/teen sitcom shows to continue with it which is a shame they just didn’t know what they had I guess
Too me it wasn't even all that dark compared to other supernatural shows I've seen. Although those shows are meant for a more older viewing audience than MBAV was. But still, though. It wasn't really all dark to be considered a pre-teen/teen show. Besides, a lot of teens were also watching some of the more darker stuff like Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries around that time, as well. Compared to those shows, MBAV was more like fluff than horror! Lol!
I just think that the executives in charge of what shows get renewed/aired and which get cancelled probably just didn't like it for whatever reason. I don't think it had anything to do with ratings. Plus, if it did then they must've been only going by just Canada's ratings rather than looking at the rating as a collective from across the world. Which is stupid, in my opinion. Because the who wasn't just shown in Canada, but rather in other countries, as well. I think the execs just didn't like it, is all.
Same with one of my other favorite shows, Legacies, which is about to be cancelled for no real reason at all, as well. Legacies is one of the CW's with decent/good ratings and yet they want to cancel it after 4 seasons. I think they personally just didn't like the show anymore which is why they're cancelling it. Among some of their other well watched series that they're cancelling on that channel, too.
Anyway, I could go on and on about MBAV (and Legacies, too) being cancelled for no good reason. But I won't. This reply is long enough already! Lol! But it is a very touchy subject for me, though. If can't tell. Lol!

A Little Childish
Corpse Husband x Reader (Female)
Warnings: Swearing
Genre: FLUFF
Summary: Corpse and Y/N go to visit Y/N’s parents for New Year’s. Corpse was promised good food, good company and A LOT of snow. Needless to say, the place didn’t disappoint - quite the contrary actually, it exceeded any and all expectations he had.
Requested by @waterflowersposts Hi there! Sorry for how long it took for this fic to be written :( I hope the final result makes up for the long wait! I also thought it would be appropriate to post it during the holiday season, so I hope you don’t mind. Hope you enjoy the read and I’m looking forward to hearing your feedback and any more requests you may have. Stay safe! Happy Holidays! Love, Vy ❤
I watch as Corpse is basically floating from one room into another in our shared apartment as he’s throwing random articles of clothing in his open suitcase. I have already packed my bags, knowing full well what the appropriate attire is for where we’re going.
I look away from my laptop when Corpse comes in for maybe the sixtieth time today, this time carrying a white tee causing me to chuckle. “Corpse, I know it’s very trademark for you, but the only way you’ll be wearing that when we get there is under a sweater for some extra warmth. I’m not looking forward to having my boyfriend freeze in my parent’s house.”
He smiles, looking at the shirt in his hands, and shakes his head, “Fine, guess I’ll do without it for a week or two.” He throws it in our room, not even bothering to check where it’ll land before he comes to sit down next to me on the couch, “Keep in mind, you have set my expectations pretty high up there. If I am not waist deep in snow the second we step off the plane, I’ll be disappointed.”
I give him a side glance, a smirk playing on my lips. Must say, taking on challenges you know you’re gonna win is the ultimate high-and-mighty feeling. “Honey, you’ve got a big snowstorm coming.”
                                                               *  *  *
All throughout our trip - I’m talking the drive to the airport AND the flight over - I have kept my eyes glued to Corpse, observing as his eyes sparkled more and more with each foot we got closer to our destination. He has told me the most snow he has seen was less than an inch and I immediately felt it was my duty to change that by introducing him to the magic of Canada - my home. My parents own a getaway cottage in the mountains of Calgary where we used to go every holiday season. My earliest memory is playing in the thigh-deep snow with my older sister and crying whenever our parents had to drag us back inside.
The West Coast of the US was a rather odd surrounding for me, having grown up surrounded by snowy mountains, experiencing Christmas with no snow whatsoever was a true let down and underwhelming feeling. Since Corpse and I started dating about a month after Christmas time last year this will be our first time spending the holidays together and Corpse was more than enthusiastic to visit Canada when I mentioned how much I enjoyed my winters there. We couldn’t go for Christmas, but we’ll be there for New Year’s Eve and the first two weeks of 2021 and I am really excited. I have been dying to see my family that has actually expanded since the last time I visited - my sister has had yet another baby, making her and her husband parents of three very energetic toddlers. The six year old twins - Ashley and Alex - and the three year old Andrew. Or, as I like to call them: The 3 As.
I have warned Corpse about them like seven times despite the fact that he’s already familiar with their energy, convincing him that if that’s more than he can handle we’ve still got time to cancel the trip. He didn’t bat an eye though, each time telling me not to worry and focus my attention on reliving the moments I’ve missed so greatly instead of making sure he was having a good time.
“If you’re there...“ he said, “I’ll sure as hell be having a good time.“
One step out of the airport and he’s already mesmerized. His eyes are shiny reflecting the glow of the snow all around. It’s gonna be funny to see his reaction when he witnesses the real deal - the snow in the mountains. This compared to that is a pathetic excuse.
“I know it’s not waist-high, but that’s because they shovel it and melt it.“ He is looking around, not paying much mind to my words. The utter amazement and disbelief on his face just makes me want to wrap my arms around him and kiss him. He’s simply adorable! I see fragments of the child in him swimming up to the surface in the form of temptation - temptation every kid feels when they see snow: Dive in and lose track of time. “Wait till we get to the cottage.“
This manages to catch his attention, “You weren’t kidding.“
I laugh at my precious kiddy boyfriend. “Whoa there, Corpsie. If your mind is already blown, I’m worried about how you’ll react to the real deal.“
I have a feeling I know exactly how he’ll react cause I react similarly - I set the child in me free. After all, no parent can tell you to stop playing and go inside when you are a 23-year-old.
                                                             *  *  *
Walking up to the cottage from the cable-car station has to be the first time I’ve breathed with my lungs’ full capacity in the last five years. The sharp cold air screams ‘home’ to me like nothing else ever did. I am still surprised as to how my sister prefers summer. My family jokes I’m a winter wolf in disguise and I think they’re right. I do like to roll around in the snow much like a wolf. No judgement! Having a few extra years added to my age doesn’t change everything.
“Oh. My. Fucking. God.“ If I could take a shot every time Corpse has repeated this phrase I’d be dead due to liver failure. He is absolutely stunned. And I’m pretty sure he hasn’t blinked at all. Who am I to talk - I haven’t either. These mountains keep getting prettier and prettier, I swear. Taking my eyes off them would be a crime.
“Told you. I wish we made a bet, I could’ve made some easy money.“ I tease him, gently bumping my elbow against his as we walk up the trail.
“I’m glad I didn’t propose such a thing. That would’ve been fucking stupid of me.“ Judging by the tone of his voice, he is not really present in this conversation, so I decide not to let it go on any longer.
Not that I could’ve done differently, seeing as how barely three seconds latter I see three smiling faces coming at me at max speed.
Oh boy.
“Auntie Y/N!“ Ashley and Alex arrive first of course, wrapping their arms tightly around my waist. Little Andrew stumbles his way to me as quickly as a three year old possibly could.
Without wasting a second, I put my bags down and crouch so I can hug them properly. “Hi my babies! I haven’t seen you in so long.” Their hugging strength surprises me and warms my heart at the same time. The twins pull away, leaving room for the little duckling in a jacket two times his size and weight. “Hi Andrew! I nice to meet you! I’m auntie Y/N. Mommy and daddy have told you about me, haven’t they? If not I’ll kick their asses.”
“Y/N, I swear, I’ll tell Amy you’re teaching her kids swears at a very early age.“ Corpse says teasingly, stealing the attention from all four of us.
“She curses like a sailor, these kids probably know more swear words than I do.“ Ash and Alex run straight out of my grasp and to Corpse, proceeding to hug him around the waist as they did with me. They met Corpse when my sister and her husband Finn visited me back in the summer. They immediately fell in love with him. I specifically remember Alex telling me I have a ‘really cool boyfriend‘ and he only uses the word ‘cool‘ when he really likes something or someone. Corpse was honorably declared cool by Alex and that still warms my heart till this day.
“Hi guys, long time no see!“ He too crouches down to hug the little demons that immediately cling to him like koalas.
I scoop up the bundle of clothes with a face and stand up, balancing him on my hip. “Let’s attempt to get inside, shall we?” With my unoccupied arm I grab the handle of my suitcase.
Corpse nods and follows my lead, picking up the bags he also left in the snow. Ash and Alex bolt it back to the house while we struggle to follow, lowkey embarrassed by the pace we’re walking with.
Andrew struggles against me, reaching out towards Corpse. I look at them both apologetically. “You’ll meet Corpse when we get inside, darling. Chill out.”
“Y/N!“ My sister’s voice steals my attention. She emerges from the house, followed by the twins, a huge smile on her face. Her eyes land on Andrew who has calmed down is now resting his head on my shoulder sleepily, “Oh I’m so sorry about them, Y/N. I didn’t know they would charge at you the second you stepped foot on the property.“
Amy motions for me to give her her son but I hand her my suitcase instead. When she takes it I use my now freed arm to hug her as tightly as I possibly can with one arm and while balancing a baby on my chest. “It’s ok! I couldn’t have dreamed of a better welcoming.” I release, giving her a big smile.
She loses interest in me and goes to hug Corpse, taking a bag from him as well before giving him a hug. “Oh my God, Corpse, it feels like it’s been forever. I’m so glad to see you.”
“Happy to see you too, Amy.“ My sister has never liked a single guy I’ve dated. EVER. Corpse is the only one she warmed up to and that’s a huge deal to me. Corpse’s happiness when I told him that was something I’d pay to have filmed just so I can watch it every time I’m feeling down.
“Let’s get you both inside, you must be freez-“ She cuts herself off, rolling her eyes at me, “Of course, you’re not.“
I laugh and blow her a kiss as we keep carrying onward.
“Um, guys?“ Corpse’s voice makes me pause and turn around. He’s still standing in the same spot, looking- unsettled, I guess you could call it.
“What’s wrong?“ I walk over to him, taking his hand in mine.
His hand automatically gives mine a reassuring squeeze, “Nothing really, it’s just that...I’m meeting your parents for the first time and-...What if they don’t like me?”
I open my mouth to go off and start stating the obvious that they indeed won’t like him. They will LOVE him. It’s impossible not to love this man! But my sister beats me to it when it comes to stating the facts.
“Look, Corpse, they already love you. Heck, sometimes I feel like they have known Finn and you longer than they have known Y/N and I! They speak so highly of you and haven’t even met you - that should tell you more than enough about how they see you.“ She waves her hand towards the cottage, “Now walk in there and blow them away.“
Honestly, I’m glad Amy beat me to it. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
And just like that, hand in hand, Andrew still in my other arm, we walk in.
                                                             *  *  *
Corpse is officially the main attraction, stealing the spotlight from Amy, Finn and I - something the three of us are incredibly thankful for. Amy was right with every word she said - my parents are absolutely in love with Corpse. Luckily for Finn and Amy, the 3 As are all over him as well. Especially Andrew. The second someone sets him down he just waddles his way over to Corpse who picks him up and settles him in his lap while he answers my parents’ questions.
When the kids were finally talked into taking a nap, Corpse and I snuck out to have a little walk in the snow and, of course, take some pictures. I made it my personal goal to make as many artsy and aesthetic photos of him as possible. His favorite - a hand only pic of him holding a snowball - was my idea and I think I have never felt prouder of myself.
“I am definitely posting this one.“ He says, turning the phone so I can see the screen. I give it a quick glance, thinking he’s talking about the hand pic but do a double take when I realize it’s a picture of me that he has taken without my knowledge.
I actually look rather decent, so I give him a green light in the form of a big thumbs up, “As long as you post the hand one too.”
“Hey, Y/N!“ We look back at the house which isn’t far from where we are right now. Amy is hugging the jacket tightly around herself as she approaches us with fast steps. “You know where we haven’t been in like forever?“
I raise an eyebrow and shake my head as I rack through my brain trying to dig up what she’s referring to. It could literally be any place on this mountain!
“Hello! The Waterless Lake? Ring any bells?“
Oh...it sure does.
Brief explanation: it is a huge circular dip in the ground which fills with water when the snow melts and becomes a lake but empties by the time winter comes back around. That being said, when the snow is still not melted, it’s an absolute wonderland to play in. I suddenly remember all the barrel-rolling Amy and I did there as kids and feel really nostalgic.
“Oh God, yes! I miss that place!“ I say, snapping out of my reminiscing trance. “Let’s go while it’s still light enough.”
“Finn is making dinner right now, or trying to at least.“ She rolls her eyes, turning to Corpse, “But it’d be our pleasure if you tagged along, Corpse.“
Corpse shakes his head, “I’ll politely decline. You ladies can reminisce and chat in peace, while I’ll be helping Finn in the kitchen.” He gives me a quick peck on the lips before excusing himself, “Have fun!”
“You too!“ We call back to him in unison.
Amy gives me an amazed, wide-eyed look, “He can cook?”
I shrug my shoulders nonchalantly, smirking, “Oh, you have no idea.”
She laughs, linking arms with me as we begin walking our way to the Waterless Lake. The place probably has a different name or no name at all, but we named it that as kids and never told our parents where it was. It’s our spot, and it is very surprising Amy offered Corpse to accompany us there.
“Sis, you are very lucky. I hope you know that.“ She tightens the hold on my arm with hers, pulling us closer together.
“I tell myself that every time I look at him, Aims. I am fully aware.“ I say dreamily, recalling all the times I’ve spent with Corpse. Almost one full year and I could never imagine that year, nor the upcoming ones, without him.
                                                                *  *  *
Upon returning, we’re met with the most wholesome scene I have ever seen - Corpse and Finn are making snowmen with the 3 As. It seems like they’ve been at it for a while, considering there is an army of snowmen of different designs, shapes and sizes all at different spots throughout the perimeter of the clearing in front of the house.
“Oh dear Lord.“ Amy mumbles, “I had a feeling this would happen.“
The five snowman-builders don’t even acknowledge our presence when we approach them. Ashley and Alex are running around with Finn, looking for sticks to use as the snowmen’s limbs while Corpse is helping Andrew gather as much snow as possible for the body.
I don’t realize there’s a huge smile on my face up until the point I’m trying to say something. Nothing comes out, though. My words are being muffled by all the overwhelming emotions that have taken over - collapsing my senses.
With a roll of her eyes, my sister opens the front door, taking a step into the house. The second the door opens, however, I get a whiff of the delicious smell coming from inside. Best guess, and probably the right one - this is Corpse’s doing.
If I wasn’t already hungry, I sure as hell am now and I’m in no mood to be in that delicious food’s proximity without attacking it.
“Come on, guys! Dinner time! Get your butts inside!“ I call out to them from the doorway.
Corpse turns to look at me with the sneakiest smirk I have ever seen. He narrows his eyes at me, “You have done the very thing you despise!”
It takes me approximately three seconds to connect the dots and scrunch up my face, picking up all the snow I can an forming it in a snow ball, throwing it at Corpse. Growing up doing this exact thing has given me great aim, therefore I hit Corpse square in the chest.
“Oh you’re so in for it now.“ He laughs, picking up snow to form his own snowball.
“Snowball fight!“ Ashley yells, ditching the sticks to make a snowball for herself.
“Oh no...“ I poke my head in the hallway just as a snowball hits my upper arm, “Aims, I need your help!“
Before Amy can respond, I run to take cover behind the nearest snowman that, luckily for me happens to be one of the larger ones. I hear Amy call out my name when she exits the house, followed by a surprised yelp from her when three snowballs hit her. “You are all dead!”
While she is fighting blood and fire (well, water really), I am making ammunition for us both to use. I’m on my eleventh snowball when snow showers me from above as though it has fallen from a tree branch.
“Hiding, I see.“ I am still in shock, hair and upper body covered in snow, when I hear Corpse’s taunting voice.
My vengeance instinct kicks in having me grab two snowballs and turn to throw them at him. To my dismay, he’s faster then me and doesn’t allow me to even get my arm at an angle where I could throw properly. Instead, he turns me back around and picks me up with ease, one arm wrapped around my waist, another grabbing two of my prepared snowballs from the ground.
“Let’s show them who the bosses are.“ I see him wink at me from the corner of my eye and it takes me little to no time to catch onto what he’s insinuating.
In short, with joined forces, we took out the opposite team in no time - like a true couple 😉

Families of service members killed, wounded by Saudi jihad mass shooting at Florida Naval Air Station file lawsuit

Pensacola Navy base mass shooter had accomplices, help from Saudi Arabia, victims claim in terror lawsuit
Families of three slain U.S. service members and 13 others wounded in a mass shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola in 2019 alleged Monday that the government of Saudi Arabia facilitated the attack that U.S. authorities concluded was an act of international terrorism.
A 152-page complaint in federal court in Pensacola makes startling new allegations that the shooter, Royal Saudi Air Force 2nd Lt. Ahmed Mohammed al-Shamrani, executed the attack with the support of “accomplices.” Those included fellow Saudi air force trainees, who he told of his plans at a dinner the night before and during a November visit to the 9/11 memorial in New York City to pay tribute to the hijackers, the plaintiffs alleged.
Al-Shamrani, who was killed by responding sheriff’s deputies, worked with al-Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula for five years to plan the Dec. 6, 2019, attack, U.S. authorities said last May after de-encrypting his phone.
The families also accused the Trump administration and Saudi government of reneging on pledges of support for families.
“In the eyes of the American people, there is no greater betrayal than the realization that a purported ally is, in fact, an enemy, “ the lawsuit asserts. It seeks damages for an attack the families say was caused by Saudi Arabia and its willful or grossly negligent acts in sending a terrorist operative “Trojan horse” into a U.S. program to train pilots flying billions of dollars of U.S.-sold warplanes.
“I think they knew he was out to destroy the American people, and he was a terrorist. Innocent lives were loss. It should have never happened,” said Evelyn Brady, a 20-year Navy veteran whose son, Airman Apprentice Mohammed Haitham, 19, was killed while running unarmed toward the shooter with his hands up, pleading with him to stop.
“They were supposed to take care of the families. … They’ve done nothing,” said Brady, who is represented with other plaintiffs by law firms led by Kreindler & Kreindler, which is also suing the kingdom on behalf of 9/11 victims and survivors.
A U.S.-based attorney for the Saudi government and spokesman for the Saudi Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The lawsuit comes as U.S.-Saudi relations have fallen to a new low since January, with the new Biden administration canceling arms sales, criticizing human rights abuses and the harassment of dissidents and pledging to “recalibrate” ties with the kingdom and its de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The administration has said it will continue arms sales to the world’s biggest customer for U.S. weapons and signaled that it wants to continue a strong counterterrorism partnership.
But it is also expected to make public as early as this week a long-sought U.S. intelligence report concluding that the crown prince ordered the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and to press Riyadh to end its war in Yemen and to moderate their own extremism.
A State Department spokesman said it declined to comment on pending litigation, but the Pensacola families’ allegations further complicate U.S.-Saudi ties. There are also pending federal lawsuits against the prince and other Saudis by Khashoggi’s fiancee and by a former top Saudi intelligence officer and close U.S. intelligence ally now living in Canada who claims he was also targeted for assassination.
Saudi Arabia has been frequently targeted by terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda, which carried out large-scale attacks beginning in 2003, and more recently by assailants sympathetic to the Islamic State group. Attacks have been directed at government facilities, Westerners stationed in the kingdom and members of Saudi Arabia’s Shiite minority, who are considered heretics by hard-line Sunni Muslims.
In January 2020, then-Attorney General William P. Barr announced that the 15-minute rampage at the Florida base was an act of terrorism, with the FBI concluding that  Shamrani was motivated by “jihadist ideology.”
Barr and aides said that while it was initially reported that Shamrani arrived at the shooting site with others, who filmed it, he in fact arrived alone and that the investigation had not found evidence that anyone else acted with him.
Barr said 21 cadets from Saudi Arabia, including 12 from the Pensacola base, were disenrolled from their training and would be returning to the kingdom after U.S. officials said they found evidence that 17 Saudis had shared Islamist or anti-American material through social media. Fifteen — including some of those who had shared anti-American material — were found to have had contact with or possessed child pornography.
Barr said U.S. attorneys had reviewed each case and determined that such people would not normally be charged with federal crimes.
The families’ Pensacola lawsuit makes more specific allegations. They claim that Saudi authorities knew of the radicalization and anti-American and anti-Jewish statements of  Shamrani — an al-Qaeda operative who made his first contact with al-Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula by at least 2015 — which he shared via Twitter.
Shamrani was nevertheless one of two out of hundreds of students in his Royal Saudi Air Force Academy class awarded a scholarship to enter a joint military training program in the United States, the suit asserts.
It also claims that the Saudi commanding officer on base and 11 other trainees it did not name knew that Shamrani purchased and stored a 9mm handgun and ammunition on base in violation of U.S. and Saudi policy; and that Saudi officials left the commanding officer’s post unfilled from September 2019 until after the shooting.
“None of the Royal Saudi Air Force trainees at the scene of the attack reported  Shamrani’s behavior nor did they try to stop the NAS Terrorist Attack, because they supported it,” the suit asserts.
On Sept. 11, Shamrani posted a message on social media saying, “The countdown has begun,” and later that month sent a copy of his will to AQAP purporting to explain the coming attack, the suit alleges. That Thanksgiving weekend, the suit said, al-Shamrani visited the memorial in New York City to those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, in which 15 of 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals.
Read the lawsuit here
The suit alleges that during the visit, the trainees “discussed the plans for the NAS Pensacola Terrorist Attack.” It also asserts that on Dec. 5, the night before the attack,  Shamrani hosted a dinner party for fellow trainees at which he screened videos of mass shootings and discussed his plans for the next day.
At least three trainees who attended the dinner called in sick the next morning, one of whom stood outside the building and recorded the shooting on his cellphone while two others watched from a nearby car, the suit claims.
That so many trainees were at least sympathetic to al-Qaeda and that several were “actually accomplices” demonstrates their belief that their extremist views “were in furtherance of [the kingdom’s] political and religious goals,” the suit claims.
Killed in the attack were Ensign Joshua Kaleb Watson, 23, of Enterprise, Ala., a recent Naval Academy graduate; Haitham, of St. Petersburg, Fla,; and Airman Apprentice Cameron Walters, 21, of Bryan County, Ga., days removed from boot camp and serving his first day on watch duty, who Shamrani approached from behind and shot in the back of the head.
Four Navy service members, a Navy civil servant, seven sheriff’s deputies and a Department of Defense police officer wounded in the attack also joined the suit. Two are partially disabled for life, including Airman George Johnson, 26, and Jessica Pickett, 20. Johnson, a single parent who now must use a cane, was hit seven times, including one bullet that was blocked by a metal “I love you” card from his mother in his wallet. Pickett, a Navy veteran and civilian employee, was struck nine times and has a metal rod in her left leg, a gap in her femur and requires a walker or wheelchair.
After expressing terrorist views for two years before being chosen for a coveted slot, training overseas to become a pilot, “An officer in their uniform murdered three Americans,” said Walters’s father, Shane Walters, 47, a former Navy F-18 Hornet mechanic and sales team manager at Gulfstream Aerospace.
“Why? How did he get here? They had to have known. … It’s shameful,” Walters said.
Walters condemned the Trump administration for failing to prioritize “dealing face-to-face” with the Saudis over the attacks. He also rebuked former president Donald Trump and the Saudi royal family for never personally speaking with the families of the killed or wounded U.S. service members.
The Trump administration was preoccupied with striking new arms and diplomatic deals and coddled Saudi Arabia “in a way no president ever has. I don’t think my son’s murder, or Mo’s murder, or Joshua’s murder, was a top priority,” Walters said.
The suit asserted that, adding “insult to injury,” Saudi Arabia has ignored or rebuked all attempts to discuss the families’ claims, as it purportedly promised in exchange for the U.S. allowing Saudi officers at Pensacola to immediately return home rather than face further investigation.
The suit cited then-President Trump saying to reporters after a phone call with King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud: “The king will be involved in taking care of the families and loved ones. …  likewise the crown prince. They are devastated by what took place in Pensacola. And I think they are going to help out the families very greatly.”
However, neither the U.S. government nor the kingdom of Saudi Arabia “contacted my family or talked to the other families,” Walters said. After the attacks, representatives of his son’s last private employer came to Walters’s home to give him two challenge coins from the vice president, Walters said, “one for me and one for my wife. They couldn’t do it themselves.”
Foreign governments and leaders  are typically immune from civil suits in U.S. courts while in office. However, the lawsuit cited exceptions for terrorism and for victims of Saudi Arabia. It also cited a 1991 law called the Torture Victim Protection Act which provides recourse in U.S. courts for violations of international law and for victims of “flagrant human rights violations,” including torture and summary execution abroad.

Here's what you're entitled to if your flight is delayed or canceled due to bad weather
Canadians attempting to travel during the holidays this week have faced many challenges getting to their destinations, thanks to the arrival of intense winter storms. Major Canadian airlines canceled hundreds of flights across the country Thursday, Friday, and Saturday amid freezing rain, blowing snow, and strong winds.
In response to the storms, Air Canada announced on Thursday it would implement a “goodwill refund policy” that allows customers to request a refund or travel voucher if they purchased a ticket no later than Dec. 21 for travel to or from a Canadian airport between Dec. 22 and Dec. 26. “If you’re scheduled to travel during the affected period, you can retrieve your booking to request a refund up to two hours before departure, free of charge on your Air Canada flight,” a statement on the airline’s website reads.
Outside of goodwill gestures, many Canadians are left wondering what their rights are in such situations. In Canada, air passengers can be compensated for flight delays and cancellations under the Canadian Transportation Agency's Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR). APPR regulations can be tough to parse out, warns Gabor Lukacs, an advocate for Canadian air passengers and the president of the non-profit Air Passenger Rights. This month, Air Passenger Rights submitted a report to the House of Commons recommending an overhaul of the APPR, including simplifying the language and definitions within the regulations.
"The terminology itself is creating a lot of confusion," Lukacs told CTVNews.ca during a telephone interview on Friday, adding that the APPR is "extremely complicated." To make it less complicated, CTVNews.ca breaks down what rights passengers have when a flight is delayed or canceled, including due to severe weather.
Sometimes, as is the case for many Canadian travelers this week, a flight is canceled or delayed for reasons outside the airlines' control. Those reasons can include weather conditions, war or political instability, instructions from air traffic control, medical emergencies, a security threat, and other factors. In the case of a cancellation, denial of boarding, or delay of three hours or more, airlines must provide passengers with alternate travel arrangements or a refund. If passengers opt for alternative travel arrangements, airlines must provide a seat on their next available flight. This is either one operated by an airline with which they have a commercial agreement, or within 48 hours of the original departure time.
"In the case of large carriers like Air Canada, WestJet, and Swoop, there is a requirement under the law to buy passengers' tickets from another airline. This is if they are unable to deliver the passenger to their own network within 48 hours of the original departure time," said Lukacs. If the cause of the cancellation, delay, or denial of boarding is outside an airline's control, the airline is not legally obligated to cover the cost of food or lodging for affected passengers, nor offer any financial compensation.
Lukacs said passengers have more options for compensation when flights are canceled or delayed for reasons within the airlines' control. In the case of a cancellation or a delay of two hours or more, if passengers are informed less than 12 hours before their departure time, airlines have to provide food and drink in "reasonable quantities" as well as a means of communication. Passengers who are denied boarding are entitled to these rights immediately. If passengers have to wait overnight for their flight, airlines have to offer hotel or other comparable accommodations free of charge, as well as free transportation to the accommodation.
Airlines must also provide alternate travel arrangements or refunds in the event of a cancellation or a delay of three hours or more. If the cause of the disruption is within their control, though, they have less time – nine hours – to arrange alternate travel within their own network. This is before they're required to book another airline's flight. "If a flight is canceled due to crew shortage, which is within the carrier's control, then they have to rebook you on flights of other airlines if they cannot rebook you on their own network within nine hours," Lukacs explained.
Passengers informed of a cancellation or delay 14 days or less before their departure time, or who are denied boarding, are also entitled to financial compensation of up to $1,000. The amount of compensation given depends on circumstances such as the length of the delay and the size of the airline.
Sometimes adverse weather or air traffic issues will ground a plane on the tarmac with everyone on board for hours before takeoff or after landing. Whether they're in the terminal or stuck on the tarmac, passengers are entitled to the same rights outlined above in the event of a delay or cancellation. The airline also needs to provide passengers stuck on the tarmac with access to toilets, proper ventilation, and cooling, the means to communicate with people outside the plane where feasible, and food and drink "in reasonable quantities," taking into account the length of the delay.
Once a flight has sat on the tarmac for three hours, airlines are legally obligated to let passengers disembark. The exception is that if takeoff is imminent, that window of time can be extended by an additional 45 minutes.

Episode 7x01 Prompts
In case you haven’t made it over to AO3 yet to check out all the prompts that have been submitted, we’re going to feature all of them here, too, listed by episode. They’re all pretty great, and we’re already looking forward to all of the amazing things you’re going to create with them.
If anything sparks your interest, be sure to head over to AO3 and claim it!
David and Patrick really do go to Cancun for their honeymoon to an all-inclusive resort. Please give me all the sunscreen application, pool time, day drinking, honeymoon sex, David’s annoyance at the spring breakers, and that night that they mentioned in the EW interview that they go relive their youth and join the spring breakers!
Road trip honeymoon across Canada please!
Take them to Montreal! Who’s been there, who hasn’t, do either of them speak more than schoolboy French, how does David feel about Montreal bagels?
They don’t go on an immediate honeymoon, so for their 1 year anniversary they go to the newest Rosebud Motel Group acquisition for a week. What is it? Is it beautiful? Is it odd? Has Stevie renovated it yet or is it a 1950s throwback from hell, unexpectedly?
A "small" honeymoon of some sort. They're doing a weekend at a b&b for now and a bigger trip later? They don't have the budget for something extravagant? They're gonna spend basically the whole time in bed so what's the point of going somewhere crazy only to mostly see the inside of your hotel room? You decide, just make it cozy and intimate and soft
A late, low key honeymoon. Patrick and David trek off to somewhere David wouldn’t traditionally find charming, but David finds a new kind of beauty in. Example: Iceland, where David was promised a spa with hot springs but is in complete awe of the Northern Lights they see on the tour Patrick arranged for them.
Maybe a Trans-Canada Highway road trip, stopping at wineries, delicious restaurants, and beautiful lakes along the way? Maybe a nice hotel in Banff where David gets in touch with nature (or just in touch with the hotel spa)? Maybe David grew up loving Anne of Green Gables and Patrick surprises him with a cute long weekend on PEI? Give the boys the best honeymoon Canada has to offer, whether it's within their realistic budget or with some major financial handwaving.
Stay-at-home honeymoon. Maybe they can't afford to go anywhere, maybe they would rather save to finally buy an espresso machine or whatever, maybe they're in the middle of renovating the house... Whatever the reason, they decide to have a honeymoon right at home. How do they get creative and make the time special?
Patrick may be a take-charge guy, but he's not entirely unflappable. What happens when a seemingly innocuous honeymoon activity (perhaps a hot air balloon ride?) turns out to be something Patrick hates and/or fears?
Patrick's been saving in order to buy them a house, so he doesn't have much to spare for a honeymoon. But it turns out he's not the only one who's been planning for their future: David has also been putting away money to give them the honeymoon of their [somewhat modest] dreams.
David severely sprains his ankle just two days before they are about to leave on their honeymoon. Thankfully, Patrick had purchased travel insurance and after a tough discussion, they decided to cancel and hold off until they could full enjoy and get around safely. They had already paused their vendors orders had announced the store was going to be closed, so they decided (and with the help, wanted or not, of the town and their families) to still enjoy a honeymoon at home as best they can.
David and Patrick are on their honeymoon (your choice of location), when they get alerted to an emergency back home (RA has been robbed again, a fire at the store or house, etc.) and have to cut their honeymoon short. How do they still make the best of it when they return home?
There’s also a generic, catch-all prompt for each episode, so if you have honeymoon ideas that don’t fit here, you can claim the generic prompt and get creating!
