Japanese high school girls are in big trouble in surreal blood-drenched art-house horror Tag (2015)
Japanese high school girls are in big trouble in surreal blood-drenched art-house horror Tag (2015) #MonthOfSpooks #Review
Very much not the bawdy Jeremy Renner comedy vehicle, “Tag” is a movie I’ll cheerfully admit to having tracked down after a bizarre gif piqued my morbid curiosity. Given that the gif shows a scene from the first ten minutes of the movie and it just gets weirder and more bizarre from there, that should give you an idea of what you’re in for.

From cult director Sion Sono, “Tag” brings us the story…

How would Mastermind versions of the characters act? Kinda like how people make canon DGRN characters Masterminds.
Okay, here we go! :D I just made these so they can change anytime.
Akita Yamazaki–She would act exactly like Aki and Akiza. But, if you want to be more interesting, we can make the mastermind Sae.
Sae falls into despair because of Kotori forcing her to be her test subject. After killing Kotori, Sae takes over the Despairs and creates the Killing Game out of people that she viewed could have helped but couldn’t. Takayuki and the other experiment in this AU could potentially be the traitors.
Instead of being the scared girl she is in canon, Sae would be a lot colder but views her actions as righteous. She views nothing wrong with her actions and takes a great amount of joy of creating lab rats out of the students.
If you want to make it more interesting, Akita could be a participant and not know she’s the mastermind, much like the Izuru situation (except now the mastermind can take over her body). In this AU, Sae would fake her own death using Kazuhiko, because of his relationship with Kotori. She makes Ayano the protagonist out of pure spite.
Naoko Kawabata–Naoko goes crazy in her home situation. She snaps and becomes a despair. Much like Sae, she would blame others for her situation and force them into the game.
Naoko would be a lot smarter than the current mastermind. Everything would be planned and researched. She would act like her canon self to catch the students off guard. After all, why would Naoko be the mastermind? The pure betrayal would give her all the despair she needs.
She would have frequent mood swings. Naoko would act like a child for all of them though. Her child-like nature would be her downfall.
Hotaru Amemori–It’s all a game. I feel like if Hotaru was the mastermind she would act a lot like Jigsaw without any of the ‘I don’t kill people’ nonsense. Hotaru would take great pride in her killing of others.
The Killing Game would have a lot more, well, games. Everything would go faster and the cast would be smaller since, otherwise, Hotaru would get bored. This is just another way for her to pass the time after all.
Mitsuru Banda–Mitsuru’s motive is to make her gang stronger than the True Despairs (possibly because she breaks due to her past as well). What better way to prove you cause more despair than hosting a Killing Game? In this AU, Akita would be the traitor, since she would still be head over heels for Mitsuru (she would act a lot like Mikan in the third chapter).
Being a gang, there would be more people watching over the project to make sure nobody escapes. Everything, including Mitsuru herself, would be more violent. There would be no trials. Mitsuru would carry a bat everywhere she goes.
However, Mitsuru is a stickler for the rules as the mastermind. She will never break them or even try to find loopholes. This would be the best way to defeat her.
Rosalina Irving–She’s completely loyal to the Committee. Rosalina finds suspects for rebels inside the Committee, and, wanting to make an example out of them, she forces them into the game. After all, this is what it takes to purify the filth.
Rosalina would be unfair as the mastermind and regularly break her own rules. Nothing can be trusted but for the Committee. The main goal is to brainwash the survivors into being slaves of the Committee and herself. They will become so mentally exhausted that they give into the ‘hope’ of the Committee.
Unlike her canon self, Rosalina would be sadistic and hates the idea of fun. She also hates anime. There’s still her wand but she does not use it to save people, but to doom them, especially for the subjects of Personality Experiment #045.
Kira Iwata–For her darling, darling Kirigiri. In this version, Kirigiri dies. Her death causes Kira to fall into despair. Knowing Kirigiri’s family, Kira decides to become the next Junko Enoshima. She steals the plans for the next class that she’s also in and kidnaps them all.
Kira will pretend to be Kirigiri and Junko. Her acting switches between the two of them depending on what situation she is in. Not being herself causes her to generally believe she’s actually Junko Enoshima. Kira has been lost and replaced with yet another Junko.
Everything will be exactly like the first and second games. If anything goes wrong, Kira will lose her shit. (also, note, in this version she would call herself Ayano Kirigiri: Ultimate Headmaster)
Ayano Nishiki and Kazuhiko Hiraoka–Because I love the idea of them being an evil couple and couldn’t think of a good one of the two of them being alone. The best team of the Committee get driven mad by Kotori in an experiment gone wrong. They kill Kotori and take over her research and work.
In this version, Kotori was planning a Killing Game for one of her ‘social’ experiments. Ayano and Kazuhiko take her ideas and run with it.
Now in despair, the duo would be incredibly abusive towards each other. They will regularly do things like hitting each other, gaslighting, etc. Though their relationship would be very…um…sexual. Way more sexual than it is in canon. Thank God they’re adults. (oh dear lord, if they aren’t adults in this AU then…um…well then…yes, there’s a lot of non-censual BDSM in this AU)
Tsukiko Oda–It’s all for the band. The whole band would be involved in this AU because why not. They’re all despairs that act as normal people. The Killing Game would set place in a concert hall (Mastermind!Tsukiko approves of Killing Game’s Serenade).
As a manager, Tsukiko would be very controlling. Tsukiko will control everything that happens no matter what. Big Sister is watching, and you better not break any of her rules.
Miyuki Kobyashi–This AU actually has a lot of spoilers so sadly I cannot go into that much depth, but I will explain what I can.
Miyuki is a bloodthirsty swordswoman. As a twisted view of ‘justice’, Miyuki picks a group of Ultimates that are sinners. Seriously, this AU is actually awesome but SO MANY SPOILERS.
Namita Nakahashi–Namita will be very carefree and not care what happens as the mastermind. Sure, she would like the students to kill each other, but she doesn’t care. This version of her is very jaded and doesn’t care about others at all, viewing them as only empty puppets.
Not much here because this is honestly all that I could think of. I think she would be the exact opposite of Tsukiko.
I just realized how long this is. Well, I’ll work on the others later. It’s my birthday tomorrow so yeah. ;) Birthday.
So here’s the girls of FoD. And it’s long! YYEEEAAAAA! :P

Tag (Riaru onigokko)
Tumblr media
[3 stars]
When Tag kicks off, there is a familiarity to the scene of Japanese girls on a school trip, having a pillow fight, and generally being silly. That is until the blood starts flying. Well, that’s not too unusual in Japanese horror either. At that point you’re sure it is going to be in the vein of Battle Royale. However, it doesn’t quite go there either.
Instead, writer/director Shion Sono creates a surreal world where running and pillow fights become driving symbols in a shifting landscape. Yes there is carnage… massively over-the-top carnage, but there is also emotion. And, more impressively as the story continues, some serious directing chops holding it all together despite the genre and any assumptions that may bring with it.
Tag is a film about not only the human condition, but also about the nature of reality, fate, and life generally. It isn’t a philosophical treatise by any stretch, but neither is it completely empty mayhem. It all builds to a purpose and a point.
Reina Triendl, in particular, gives us a focus and a connection for the story. She draws you in with her innocence and desperation, as well as her strength and determination in the face of overwhelming insanity. Her counterparts, with Sono’s guidance, in Mariko Shinoda and Erina Mano carry that torch well which pulls it all together. Yuki Sakurai, Ami Tomite, and Aki Hiraoka all deliver too. Most of these young women have worked with Sono in the past and their c.v.s are almost entirely unknown to US viewers, but they are worth keeping an eye on. For all of its absurdity, the success of this movie is down to their commitment and interactions.
If you enjoy Japanese horror, this is a bit unusual and worth seeing. I was expecting gooey silliness given its write up, but it really is meatier and more interesting than you might expect.

Are there any songs that you think just completely fit some of the characters in this series?
*me when I finally realize there are asks in here*
Um...I totally answered these on time.
Okay, now for character songs. Yippee.
Most character songs spoil the character arc. So here are nonspoiler songs for your enjoyment.
Akita Yamazaki-Mind Brand by MARETU (the relationship described is the one with Hideyoshi Yamazaki, which shows a lot more on how Akita views it and what Akita doesn’t want to tell the readers)
I guess this is minor spoilers but since Hideyoshi ripped out her fingernails and tortured her for days on end, yes, he did rape her. Akita is rough and cynical because of this event, and this is what causes her slow descent into madness.
I could go more into detail, but that would take forever. The reason why I changed Aki Yamamoto to Akita Yamazaki is that I listened to this song and got horrible ideas.

Kazuhiko Hiraoka-Fire Fire by Flyleaf
Mostly spoilers for the truth but I just really like this song. Listen to it. And create theories from the tongues of liars.

Ayano Nishiki & Kazuhiko Hiraoka-If I’m James Dean, You’re Aubrey Hepburn by Sleeping With Sirens
Ha ha, an unusual way to view a song but it strangely fits. Instead of a breakup song now, it is a song about pleading for your boyfriend to stay alive because your love is forever. Or maybe I’m just weird. That’s probably it.
