Japanese high school girls are in big trouble in surreal blood-drenched art-house horror Tag (2015)
Japanese high school girls are in big trouble in surreal blood-drenched art-house horror Tag (2015) #MonthOfSpooks #Review
Very much not the bawdy Jeremy Renner comedy vehicle, “Tag” is a movie I’ll cheerfully admit to having tracked down after a bizarre gif piqued my morbid curiosity. Given that the gif shows a scene from the first ten minutes of the movie and it just gets weirder and more bizarre from there, that should give you an idea of what you’re in for.

What is the principal role that's been played by the most people of color? Meg? Raoul? Carlotta?
If counting a person who will be considered adding a diversity in the context of the rest of the cast and/or the country - I.E. not counting Japanese performers in Japan, or South Korean performers in South Korea - I’d say Raoul, Phantom, Piangi, Carlotta, Meg, and Christine. More or less in that order. I’ve probably forgotten some, but:
Raouls: Kevin Gray, Nadim Naaman, Michael Maliakel, Ramin Karimloo, Rodney Ingram, Jordan Donica, Sean MacLaughlin, Paul Matsumoto, Alistair So, Liam Tamne
Phantoms: Robert Guillaume, Kevin Gray, Nicholas Nkuna, Norm Lewis, Derric Davis, Ramin Karimloo, Quentin Oliver Lee
Piangis: John Whitney, Thabiso Masemene, Marcus Desando, Frank Viveros, Phumzile Sojola, Marc Vastenavondt, Dondi Oong, Christian Sebek
Carlottas: Patricia Phillips, Danielle White, Katie McCreary, Heather Hill, Janinah Burnett, Angela M. Caesar
Megs: Jee Hyun Noh, Carly Blake Sebouhian, Courtney Kristen Liu, Hinako Sakuraoka, Mami Iwai, Miki Nakamura, Christina Tan, Hillary Reiter (?)
Christines: Margaret Ann Gates, Lana English, Ali Ewoldt, Sandra Joseph, Caitlin Finnie, Leila Benn Harris (?)
(thanks to @andrewlloydwebber for additional names)

La colonna sonora, invece, è stata composta da Michiru Oshima (Little Witch Academia, Fullmetal Alchemist, Zetsuen no Tempest).

love solfege & ayu
today is the 5th anniversary of the passing of Hinako Konno ( 紺野比奈子)
she was mostly known as a mangaka, but was credited as a lyricist for some of love solfege's commercial works.
however, lesser known, especially in the english-speaking sphere, is that she was there from the very beginning; a principal and founding member who held many roles.
she was a lyricist.
she was an artist who worked on several of their album covers.
she even performed in the group under the pseudonym Ayu (鮎). she was on almost every album.
and... she was the wife of group representative and composer Shinichiro Matsumoto ( 松本 慎一郎  / auguste beau).
it took me a very long time to come across this knowledge. i found out this past winter and decided to schedule a post about it- it doesn’t feel like there’s a right time to write about this. i kind of want to have this post just exist so that anyone looking for it can find out what happened.
i’ve been listening to their works for over a decade and it took me so long to put two and two together.
Ayu was there from the very beginning. she was credited as a full member from the start, and not just a guest (like their other frequently recurring members).
while she is always credited as Ayu when singing, her lyrics were sometimes credited as Hinako Konno and sometimes as Ayu, even on songs that she sang. “Ayu” does not appear on the credits at all after 2014.
it is only because of a tweet by frequent guest singer Jenya that i was able to definitively confirm it at all, though it seems other sources have arrived at the same conclusion before i did.
lovege are my favourite artists in the whole wide world, and writing this makes me really sad. yet i feel compelled to.
i will try to provide a clear timeline.
Konno had put her manga work on hiatus in 2011 due to ailing health. by 2013, love solfege’s output had slowed- their album philosophilia was scheduled for summer 2014 but did not see its scheduled release.
Hinako Konno’s twitter was active until august 16 of 2015.
she died from acute heart disease two days later, on august 18.
Shinichiro Matsumoto posted his sentiments here.
four years pass between love solfege’s albums. in may of 2017, they release Sanctus. in addition to a few original songs, it collects many of love solfege’s commercial works for ps vita games throughout the years- all of the lyrics on those songs are credited to Hinako Konno and she is the last credit in the booklet, under special thanks.
Sanctus was published under Team Entertainment, a more “official” label that they used for a few of their larger albums. when they return to their self-published work at comiket a few months later, it is not with philosophilia, but an entirely new album called 無窮動perpetuo.
from this point on, her name does come up again a few times, credited with the lyrics of a few songs here and there, or for re-recordings of older songs.
Ayu was the singer and lyricist for some of my favourite songs love solfege has ever put out. their early works are imbued with this air of amateur and almost childlike whimsy that i’m sure she’s largely responsible for. the group still found success in their classical flair, even in the early days, but her work is something i will miss dearly.
i cannot imagine what they went through, but have nothing but immense respect for matsumoto’s decision to continue working, broaden his horizons, and to realize all of the ideas that the two of them shared.
song lyrics, themes and sketches for future albums- the many things she left behind live on through their work.
it's crushing to think about, but... i also think it's beautiful.

Ride Your Wave - Anime Movie Review
Contains Spoilers
Hello!
I have watched this movie a while ago and it was good enough for me to want to talk about it. I have been a bit obsessed with shows that have ocean / pool / water themes, so when I found out about this movie, I immediatly wanted to watch it. It was not what I expected, for sure.
Tumblr media
This movie is called “Ride Your Wave” or in Japanese “ きみと、波にのれたら” - “Kimi To, Nami ni Noretara”, “If You Can Ride Your Waves”. It’s main character is Hinako Mukaimizu (voiced by Rina Kawaei, she was an AKB48 Team A member who graduated in 2015. Here’s a video of her graduation, she is the girl in the middle, in the beautiful dress. ), a 19 year old university oceonagraphy studend who moved recently to Chiba. She loves all things related to the sea and one of her hobbies is surfing - this is something she does on a daily basis. The viewer qickly learns that her personality is a happy-go-lucky type, mixed with a tad of adorebleness and clumsiness. After a fire breaks out close to her apartment, she is saved by 21 year old firefighter Minato Hinageshi (voiced by Ryouta Katayose, a member from  GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE. Here is a music video from the group called “EXPerience Greatness”.).
We are shown their love progressing more and more as we get to know now Minato. He is lovely young man, who feels incredibly responsible by others and wants to help and save others while he can. As we their love growing and these two becoming an official couple, we also see them sharing hobbies like surfing, as it was one of the things that led them to spend more time together - Hinako teaching Minato how to surf. It’s throughout all these moments as lovebirds that the movie really shows beautiful scenes involving water and I felt really mesmerized with everything, despite how simple the artwork might seem.

As the movie goes on, the viewer and Hinako are forced to deal with Minato’s death. At first, Hinako’s grief leads her to be as far away from the sea as possible, but when she sings the song the couple previously shared ( “Brand New Story” by  GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE), the spirit of her deceased lover appears on the water she is near by. No one else but her can see him.
We see Hinato’s struggles with accepting the death of the man she adored, trying to move on, finding a passion, while, eventually, becoming independent again.
From my take, the message of this film, and it was done in a gracious manner, is that, even after losing something as precious as the your true love, you can still survive and have a fullfilling life. It has extremely heart-clenching moments, especially when Hinako is her lowest points, but the way the movie brought everything up again with the friendship between her and Youko Hinageshi (voiced by Honoka Matsumoto. Here’s a trailer for Mio On The Shore, one of her movies, she’s the short haired girl.) and Wasabi Kawamura (voiced by Kentaro Ito. Here’s a video about him and his appearance in Terrace House.) - characters that were also grieving in different ways, it showed a perfect balance between sadness and happiness. It was also refreshing to see something that was not about romantical love as Hinako’s journey, despite being highly focused on Minato’s death and her love for him as well, is more about becoming strong and capable of dealing with her own hardships.
It’s a wonderful movie and I highly reccommend it.
