''let's be pathetic together.'' gives me Julie and Flynn vibes, with their 'hey disappointment' thing.
Flynn: 911
Julie: What's the prob?
Flynn: My mom fell down a 5 Minute Crafts black hole and is forcing me to be her model. Please come save me or suffer with me.
Julie: Omw, I'll bring soda.
When Julie arrived at the Taylor home, she could see Flynn standing in the middle of the living room, wrapped in plastic wrap and her mother was brandishing a hot glue gun, making leaf shapes with it. Flynn sent a pleading look at Julie.
"Hi Marisol!" Julie chirped. "Can I borrow Flynn? I need her help with a homework assignment."
"Oh, hi Julianna," Marisol replied, and Julie fought not to scrunch her nose. No one used her full name, not even her dad when he was vexed with her. Heck, Luke and Reggie didn't even know it and they'd been dating for months now! "I need Flynnigan to help me with this project and she's all yours."
Flynn whined. "Mom come on, that's going to take hours."
"It would take less time if you'd stand up straight and stop squirming so much," Marisol reprimanded.
"Can I help? Speed it up a little?" Julie offered, shooting Flynn a semi-apologetic look, but what else could she do?
"You can prepare the alginate solution," Marisol responded. "We're going to mold some hands to make the bodice. We can do your hands while we're at it."
"Mom you're not roping my friends into your weird thing!" Flynn protested.
"She offered to help!"
"Not to stick her hand into discount plaster of paris!" Flynn shouted.
"It's okay, I don't mind," Julie said. "But maybe we could have a snack first?"
"Oh of course," Marisol said, bustling off to the kitchen. Julie was sure she'd come back with something lacking flavour or any redeeming qualities, but it gave Flynn a break, which was her goal.
"Ugh, I hate when she gets like this," Flynn said, slumping in a heap on the floor. "Like her shit is more important than anyone else's lives. And she makes me feel pathetic in the process."
"Let's be pathetic together then," Julie said, nudging her shoulder. "If we can't be there for each other in our time of need, then what's the use of being best friends?"
"You're a good friend," Flynn replied, leaning her head on Julie's.
"Yeah well," Julie said, semi-shrugging. "You'll just owe me one."
"Can I pay you back in hugs?" Flynn asked.
"Those are always free and you know it," Julie replied, slinging her arm around her back. "You wanna try and make a run for it while your mom makes us quinoa balls or something?"
"It's like you read my mind," Flynn said, shimmying out of the monstrosity, cutting through the plastic wrap and grabbing her bag. "Let's get going while the going's good."
Julie giggled, pulling Flynn out the door, and only stopped to grab her bag-plus the bag of sodas-and headed right for the bus stop. Flynn cackling as they hopped onto the number twelve right before the door closed.
"Thank god, I love her, but my mom is impossible," Flynn sighed.
"What was she trying to make anyways?" Julie asked, pulling a string of licorice and offering half to Flynn as the bus set off.
"A dress of some kind?" Flynn replied around a mouthful of Twizzler. "Something that took too much time to look ugly and I'd never wear."
"You wanna go thrifting for cute outfits for our double date the weekend then?"
"Of course, let's go disappointment," Flynn said as the bus pulled up in front of the local strip mall they favoured.
"Right behind you underachiever. Right behind you."

silicone Jesus dildo take 1 is complete
Tumblr media
unfortunately, despite being told there have never been any "complaints" of bubbles in the silicone, there are definitely too many. i could arguably use this once, since there aren't any unsafe sharp edges, but it would be near impossible to sanitize afterwards.
could be an issue with people not caring about bubbles in their homemade toy. could be an issue with me not being thorough enough in my research. 🤷‍♀️
a note for anyone interested in using the CAW products:
1: yes the alginate sets very quickly. don't dick around. i mean do. but like, don't take too long pouring it and sticking in whatever you want to make a mold of.
2: the alginate is somewhat fragile. it's designed to hold the shape long enough for you to make a cast of whatever you're molding, and then be broken off from it. it is not a multi-use mold like a silicone or acrylic. this is true of the kind that comes in the set AND the kind you can buy at a craft store.
3: the instructions say to pour the silicone slowly and does not give a time frame like the alginate. this does not mean the silicone has a slow cure time. it will begin to set within a handful of minutes, so you need to find a balance.
pour slowly enough to reduce the size and number of bubbles. pour quickly enough that the bubbles that do form can escape.
i strapped a vibrator to the outside of my mold and it worked hilariously well. the only reason there are as many bubbles as there are is because they were trapped at what would have been the highest point by the thicker silicone at the top because i wasn't expecting how quickly it would solidify.
4: the amount of silicone they give you clearly expects you to use the included vibrator. if you don't want to use it, buy extra silicone.
5: just because i worried about it: if you get the glow in the dark colors, the advertised picture shows one part of the 2 part silicone mix being fully colored, but for me both parts A & B were clear (with different colored lids), and came with a powder to mix in. but don't worry, the powder is plenty to thoroughly color the silicone as you can see in the picture.
overall, a solid first try. might still use it the once. i think i'm going to look into a body-safe silicone with a longer cure time, since the vibration method worked so well. really the only issue was that the more solid silicone on top trapped what was trying to come up.
not sure when i'll be able to do that but hey maybe a little bit of our tax returns could go into this little project.

Still typing that list because I had a list that was up to date and then it wasn't and then things got out of hand and then making a fresh list seemed like a good thing to do and so here I am.
And I got a book to make realistic felt cats. I have a dog one that I got at the house before the blue carpet house and I have supplies so when I'm feeling like making one I'll make a felted realistic looking cat.
Not even going to tell myself I'm going to read or write or watch or draw anything.
The purple Lego squirrel is around 3 inches tall. My executive dysfunction can't come up with shit for Legos but I can follow the directions. I basically have what I have around because there are other crafting uses and then when we did junk runs I ended up with a bunch.
But yeah, I saw in a ball jointed doll making book they used Lego to make the base and walls for an alginate mold and like fuck yeah that's a great idea because you can totally wash Legos and if things don't wash off basic bricks are basic bricks.
Until I bought it, on clearance yay me, I didn't even know they made a purple squirrel or I would have had it earlier perhaps.
Ne regurts, it's standing on top of Klaus' box with the Kinder Surprise squirrel.

Make A Space Craft With Recycled Items
Make a space craft with recycled household items and objects. The space craft rocket created in this video is made from old roll-on deodourant containers, a jam jar, used pens, bits of old computer equipment, mobile/cell phones and other odds and ends around the house.
Instead of throwing things away which may cause damage to the environment, why not make stuff with old junk?!
The space craft in this video is also painted with acrylic paints and thrust in front of a green screen for some added fun effects!

Project 1 (Second Attempt)
I bought silicone and alginate from Barnes so I could do the process at home. I followed along with the same steps from the first time I did it. However this time the silicone was a hundred times easier due to the liquidity of the material compared to the bathroom silicone from Bunnings. This time once I de-molded the hand I found that I had finger this time however I had a giant clumb of the silicone on the palm of the hand but I think that was due to my inexperience with mold making. To remove the clumb I used a utility craft knife and tried to cut it off in a way the follows the shape of my palm. I also changed the colour this time, with the bathroom silicone I decided to use white because I wanted the hand to not have any designated skin colour and to blend into the white wall of the studio. However, some people thought that people still might perceive the white colour in a certain way so when I did the Barnes one I wanted to keep the original colour of the silicone which is a milky clear colour.
I was extremely happy with the turn out of this mold. After talking with Chris he pointed out the artist Robert Gober who creates disassemble body part artworks, similar to what I am making. Through his work, I was inspired to put clothes on the arm. I thought of many ideas on how to put on the clothes like having it stop at the wall like Gober’s works or having the whole item of clothing and pinning it along the wall, however, I decided to go with Gober’s idea because I thought it would look less messy. Also using this technique I’m going to be able to cover the base that connects the hand to the wall.

This is so cool. I made an alginate mold of a flower I found outside, and cast it with a red wax. The mold and cast were nowhere near perfect, but a damn interesting result if I do say so. Id love to watch this baby burn. Maybe I’ll make a bouquet and film the whole thing melting.
Maybe I could make some paper craft flowers too, and see those burn too?

And they said it could be done! The right and WRONG way to make a face cast.
So you’re a beginner SFX makeup artist, OR a really creepy person trying to make a face cast of your loved one while they sleep, so you can forever possess an identical image of their visage to caress while laughing maniacally in your candle and torch lit cave lair. Whatever your reason is for doing it, make sure you are well prepared with your supplies beforehand (and emotionally) because while this process will not be particularly difficult if you have an IQ higher than that of a kitchen sponge, you will need patience and to not miss some small but vital tips, which if you do will result in TOTAL DOOM AND UTTER FAILURE! No pressure though, so relax and remember what’s the worst that could happen (other than doom and failure of course) I mean your eyebrows will grow back right?…..
Before you begin, I highly suggest watching one or a few of the bazillion YouTube tutorials on this subject. This will give you an idea of what you’re getting yourself into, and if it’s something that will be within your time and financial budget.
Keep in mind that what I am about to ramble to you about is the “simple” way to make a face cast using plaster gauze NOT alginate. It is a fairly cheap project especially depending on where you buy your supplies. I personally went to our local Michael’s store to buy the essentials, but you can also buy them online at Walmart, Amazon, Dick Blick and many other craft and art supply stores. I always love the fact that on any given day I can always find a coupon to use at Michael’s, on this particular lucky day I had one for 60% off, so the whole project ended up being around $23 plus tax.
The project will be in two parts; casting and molding. For the WHOLE project you will need the following materials: Plaster gauze strips cut into different sizes. I bought two sizes of plaster gauze rolls; one 8” wide and one 4” wide, you don’t have to but it obviously makes your life a lot easier when you’re cutting them. Vaseline, wood glue, sponge brush, craft plaster or plaster of Paris, sanding paper, cling film, disposable latex or plastic gloves, disposable plastic tubs, disposable plastic cups, a plastic knife to use for stirring.
Step 1) Say your prayer to whatever deity you worship, or not. JK! really this is going to NOT be hard, maybe.
Step 2) Assemble your supplies for the casting process which will consist of the following: Plaster gauze strips, Vaseline, plastic wrap (not to be mistaken for “plasta crap” which is what I thought the girl doing the tutorial was saying for a few deer in the headlight seconds, honestly, I wouldn’t know where you’d buy that anyway. You will also need a small disposable plastic tub full of warm water, latex/plastic gloves if you don’t want to get that s$*t all over your hands, and a towel you don’t care about if you don’t want to get that s$*t all over your bathroom counter/workspace. Also make sure that you cut enough strips or have your scissors on hand to cut more if you need it. TIP: Wear something you don’t care about getting dirty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 3) VERY IMPORTANT!!!! Unless you will be using a bald cap, wrap your head and hairline with the plastic wrap making sure there are no stray hairs that will be covered in plaster. THOUROUGHLY cover your eyebrows, lashes, and facial hair (if you have it) with Vaseline! If it’s not covered it’s coming off with your cast!
Step 4) Dip your strips in water then hold them over your tub to shed the excess, run the strip through your index and thumb to spread the plaster into the tiny holes and start laying on your face. As you do this massage or stroke the gauze with your wet fingers after you lay them down to make sure the plaster is distributed onto all of the holes. You can choose to either cover your eyes or not, I didn’t feel comfortable with covering, so I did it after I took the cast off, it’s IMPORTANT to not get this stuff in your eyes DUH! AND make sure you have breathing holes for your nose, double DUH!
Tumblr media
Step 5) Wait for it to dry. Mine took about 20 mins to completely dry. This gave me enough time to…sneak up on my husband, the kids, the dogs. Go outside to get the trash bin from the curb and wave at my very confused elderly neighbor. Blast Michael Jackson’s Thriller in the kitchen, and put my lit dance moves to use. By then the dried up plaster gauze slowly started to lift on it’s own (possibly because I was mouthing the lyrics under the mask) just in time to remove it with one hand for the grand finale.
Tumblr media
Step 6) As I was lifting the mask into the air with my kids disapprovingly shaking their heads, I realized upon closer inspection, holding my mask in the light, that my mask needed reinforcement in some areas, so I went back to my work station and used up some of the remaining gauze in the same manner as before to patch up the weak spots, this time with the mask OFF my face, then again leave to dry thoroughly.
Tumblr media
Step 6.5) Optional! Eat a snack and admire your bee-you-tiful face, you’re gonna need to fuel up for step 8!
Step 7) Now that your mask is completely dry after round 2, set up your workstation for the casting process. Here you will need your two plastic cups and knife, your plastic mixing tub, and a second tub you will be propping your mask into as you pour your plaster in and leave it to harden. You can prop it with towels or whatever you deem fit so that when you pour the plaster in, the pressure is not on any one single point of your mask. Follow the directions for mixing the plaster, the one I used called for a 1:1 ration of plaster to water, I mixed the in two batches of my red solo cups to fill in my mask. Tip: wait for 30 seconds after pouring half of each batch then tap the mask down on your surface to release the air bubbles. Leave your masterpiece to dry, BE PATIENT! My plaster suggested an hour but I left it for two and it was still warm to the touch when I went to unwrap it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 8) Now that your face cast has hardened, peel away the bandages. At this point you still need to let your cast fully cure for 24 hours.
24 hours later…. (your best French accent here)
Step 9) Pat yourself on the back for having the self restraint to not mess with your cast until now, then go ahead and mess with your cast. This is the point where you want to take a small file or sculpting tools if you have them and tweak the details of your cast, then take some sanding paper and GENTLY smooth your surfaces. You don’t want to go all Rambo on it and sand away your details. Wipe your surface with a rag so there’s no debris. Note: Since the tip of my nose came out smushed, I used white air dry clay to give myself a nose job.
Tumblr media
Step 10) Now is the time to break out the wood glue and sponge brush. Cover your cast with a layer, let dry and repeat about 5 times or until you’re happy. And this my fiends is how it’s done, the right way!…..Haha! I just realized I mistyped friends, but I’m leaving it in there! Note: If I were to do anything different here I would probably make sure to use a wood glue that dries white. I used Gorilla glue, and not quite sure why I ended up with this orange tint, if you know let me know!
Tumblr media
Now…..How to do it the WRONG way. You see I have a confession. The process that I detailed above was actually what I did the second time I tried it. Why? Because as I was uber excited to try it the first time, I did skip over some key steps that resulted in the aforementioned doom and failure, and sadly some amount of detached sideburn hair and a few lashes! Below is a picture of my failed product (on the right), and my less failed product (on the left) and here’s what I did wrong:
Tumblr media
BEWARE of unlubed sideburns. Even though I was diligent with the Vaseline application onto my eyebrows the first time, I didn’t put any on my lashes because I knew beforehand that I wasn’t going to cover my eyes. However, that s$*t gets every where and you better believe I got some stuck in my eyelashes! Also, I covered my hairline well with the plastic wrap, however, my unlubed sideburns peeked out resulting in ripped away hair! I didn’t sign up for this kind of madness!
Stroke and massage gently while wet… Ahem…No, it’s not what you think (or maybe it is, hey I don’t know how your mind works!). A grave mistake I made during my first go was that as I was laying down my wet strips I didn’t take the time to gently smooth with my wet fingers so as to spread the plaster in the tiny holes, this resulted in a double whammy! First, my final cast having the bumpy texture of the squares and holes of the strips on the surface of my cast, and to be able to sand those down would have required a more dramatic kind of sanding that would’ve eroded the features as well. Second, as the holes were not fully filled with the gauze plaster itself, when I poured in my batch of prepared plaster, to my horror it just dripped straight through like a sieve! I kept having to pour whatever dripped out back in until it started forming a hardening first layer but still kept dripping so my end cast was very shallow in depth! See pic above.
Patience is a virtue… that I don’t have. So you know how I told you before to make sure that you let your mummy face mask dry thoroughly after your second bandage reinforcement process? Yeah….I didn’t do that. The result was the sides of my mask buckling and then tearing away as the liquid plaster was poured because they didn’t have time to properly adhere to the previous layer.
Don’t crush your nose and spite your face. Before you pour your liquid plaster, make sure that your mask is properly cushioned and suspended enough that when the heaviness of the liquid being poured in fills out the details and pushes the mold down, it’s high points will not be crushed against the bottom of the container. Unfortunately for me, this happened on my second try resulting in a crushed nose tip! As you can imagine I was very disappointed, but thankfully I had white air dry clay that I used to rebuild the tip of my nose during step 9 of the process, and now I just pretend that I didn’t have anything done to my nose!
So there it is! The whole process! Like I said you could go watch a video about it, but I did, and still made mistakes anyway so hopefully you won’t have to! If you read this blog and try it, please let me know how it turned out!

Everything You Wanted To Know About Alginate
Alginate is a simple material made by transforming brown algae of natural origin from around the world. This white limestone powder enjoys an excellent surprising sponsorship in various industries.
You will be amazed to read some of the unexpected beneficial uses of alginate. Let’s see more:
Medical and Pharmaceutical – Alginate is used for different purposes in medicinal applications. The biggest advantage is that the alginate accelerates the disintegration of the tablets allowing a faster release of its medical component. The best part is that the alginate is still tasteless and odorless. Alginate is also used to lower cholesterol, treat high blood pressure, relieve indigestion, treat wounds and burns. Not only that, alginate works well in healthy foods and weight loss supplements as well. The same powder has been used by dentists to capture dental impressions for many decades.
Industrial and Technical – Alginate is used in various industries and is particularly useful for the manufacture of textiles. This thickening agent and binder is used for the color paste substrate when applying patterns for printing fabrics, especially cotton, jute and rayon. It is also used in the production of solder bars, fertilizers, ceramics, paper, adhesives, paints and dyes. Another advantage is that alginate allows easier disposal of wastewater.
Food and Beverages – Many people may be aware that organic and food alginate has thickening, gelling, emulsifying, stabilizing and texture enhancing properties that can be valuable in the kitchen. Extensive use includes meat twisting, frozen fish preservation, thickening sauces, softening breads, ice cream, wine enhancement and mousse maintenance in beer. Apart from this, alginate is even used by cooks to create these wonderful spheres with liquid inside that pop in the mouth.
Beauty and Skin Care – Alginate can make people very beautiful too. It is used to thicken several cosmetics and allows them to conserve moisture. This can greatly improve the performance of some products. This powder is used in various facial and spa treatments and is added to the face packs too. Not only does it keep the skin moisturized, but can also reduce wrinkles. When added to the lipstick, the same alginate helps the color stay on the surface of the lip.

Dust is also used by capture and release of fishermen to make a realistic reproduction of their « catch ». In addition, alginate is completely safe for the skin and can also be used in living humans. It is commonly used by life casting artists to capture molds from different parts of the body before making molds of realistic three-dimensional life forms.
