388. Douglas Niles - DL6: Dragons of Ice (1985)

After a short hiatus separating the first and second volume of the Dragonlance modules, we get the first module which came out in 1985. Coming out a month after the Dragons of Winter Night novel, this pretty much coincides with the first section of that novel. By this time the novels had overtaken the modules in the publication schedule, and this could create spoiler problems if you had a party of players who were also avid readers.

So what we get here is the party arriving in Tarsis the Beautiful, a mythical ancient port city, which is by now not a port at all as the sea has retreated as a consequence of the Cataclysm that happened some centuries earlier and crashed a meteor in the ocean on the city of Istar creating a huger hole and whirlpool that pulled the water in and made the seas retreat from the coast of Tarsis. 

Our party arrives with the objective of obtaining a boat out, and in the meanwhile meet Alhana Starbreeze of the Qualinesti elves. As usual, and this is what made the Dragonlance modules unique, there's a really fun and engrossing story here where the players are right at the centre of the tale. The strong point of the module being the story is what makes the possibility of spoilage through the novels particularly unfortunate, if I was a DM I would have been a bit miffed by this.

This song isn’t actually about Dragonlance as such; it’s actually about the love of stories. But it makes a lot of Dragonlance references, and i was a fan of Nightwish before starting this “songs about Dragonlance” project, so here i’m starting here.

Among references to other fantasy series, “Wishmaster” expresses a desire to visit the hidden passages of Sla-Mori and the Inn of the Last Home, where an elfmaid, perhaps Laurana, waits, as well as to meet Silvara and Alhana Starbreeze. (I can relate.)

My favorite like is “I’ll be with you soon, my Shalafi” because of the questions it raises. Who’s talking here? Is it Dalamar addressing Raistlin? Is it another elf addressing another Shalafi? Is it Tuomas (the songwriter) addressing Raistlin? Or a mentor of his own? Since the next line goes “Grey Havens my destiny”, are the two works being conflated, with the line referring to a Lord of the Rings elf like Elrond, Galadriel, or Cirdan shipwright? Where is this Shalafi that the speaker isn’t with them now, but will be soon? Is that really how Shalafi is pronounced? These are the questions that keep me going.

Dunno when the next music post will be, but the next song will be more Dragonlance-focused, i promise.

Dragonlance week#5 - vows

I’m reading the dragonlance chronicles and the amount that wow took from the series is crazyyy. One of my fav references I’ve learned about is an elven character named Alhana Starbreeze- I’m guessing she was the inspiration for Starbreeze Village and maybe even “children of the stars/kaldorei” since her father is called the Speaker of the Stars, the leader of their particular group of elves. But there’s so much more wow literally ripped off including the cataclysm and dragonflights.
