such a fun age by kiley reid: a Black babysitter gets stopped by a grocery store security guard and a video of it goes viral and a bunch of other stuff also happens. lots of really good discussions on racism. her other book that just came out this year was really good too!!!

fantasy/sci-fi:

the last binding trilogy by freya marske: finally read these a few months ago and i loved them so much 😭 great romance great characters exciting plot with high stakes FOUND FAMILY!!

station eleven by emily st. john mandel: this is a pretty well known book but it was GOOD! takes place in a post-apocalyptic world and centers on the importance of living as opposed to just surviving and also the beauty of creating and sharing art ❤️

the lost village by camilla sten: a group of people filming a documentary go to an abandoned village where everyone in the town just up and disappeared one day and were never seen again and weird stuff starts happening. i read this in like 2 days. also i based the town in the stoncy ghost files au off of this lmao

the whisper man and the shadows by alex north: crazy as fuck plot twists that made me close the book and run around my house. he has a third book too but unfortunately I didn’t like it very much

night film by marisha pessl: reporter obsessed with elusive director who’s daughter just mysteriously died investigates director and his family. very good mixed media element and very immersive

mister magic by kiersten white: child actors from children’s tv show mister magic — a tv show that ended suddenly and tragically, with no surviving video footage or evidence of the creative team behind the show whatsoever — gather together for a reunion as adults. kinda like if IT by stephen king was combined with a weird creeypasta and throw in some religious trauma also. sooooo good

1. name the best book you've read so far this year

it’s hard to narrow it down to one so I’m cheating and choosing two

Idlewild by James Frankie Thomas - this book is the perfect representation of being young, trans, and online (and a theater kid); I’m pretty picky when it comes to literary fiction but this one really resonated with me. beautiful prose and incredibly done POV.

Chain Gang All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjeh Brenyah - devastating fucking book and so so well done, I read his other book in 2022 and also loved that one and he’s quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. unflinching look at America’s prison system with a lot of heart at the center.

20. where and how do you find new books to read?

a lot of places! recommendations from friends and classmates usually (I’m an English minor so I’m around a lot of people with strong opinions on books), also various websites (I’m pretty active on Goodreads but I’ve been meaning to switch over to Storygraph for a while). also a big fan of just going to the library and looking for something that sounds interesting.

this was THE YEAR OF DISCWORLD for me. I read more disc books than non disc books. I'm probably gonna take a break from the series for a few weeks to get my breath back. Yes, I am keeping this one separate. I don't necessarily intend to get to all of these by the end of 2024, just some time in the future (I probably will end up reading them all next year anyway LOL). Once I finish these, only the Rincewind and Tiffany Aching series remain. I'm not as interested in those based on the small sampling I got of them, but I'll probably read them all at some point just for the sake of completion.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry (read twice!), Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel (also The Glass Hotel, but not quite as much, except at the end when it totally ripped me open), The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun, The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (but not as much as Circe, which I read last year), The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (although none of the books really stuck with me), and Flying Solo by Linda Holmes.

La comediante nacional, Alison Mandel volvió con todo a la Quinta Vergara, en lo que marcó su vuelta al escenario tras seis años de ausencia.

Su show estuvo enfocado en la maternidad,  la amistad entre las mujeres y anécdotas de su matrimonio con el también humorista, Pedro Ruminot, el que se transformó en el eje de su rutina.

Y fue así que Pedro Ruminot fue el protagonista de su monólogo, siendo uno de los que más risas arrancó cuando Alison catalogó  a su esposo de flaite. “No hay nada que me guste más que un hombre flaite”, confesó la comediante, logrando la ovación y aplausos de las 15 mil personas presentes.

Chistes cortos, anécdotas que hicieron reconocerse a las personas en cada una de las pequeñas historias de la artista, hicieron de su rutina una sólida presentación que la hicieron merecedora de la gaviota de plata.

Tras recibir el anhelado premio del festival, Alison retomó su rutina, donde continuó logrando conectar con el público presente en la Quinta Vergara y en sus hogares, alzando para terminar la noche la aclamada gaviota de oro.

La actuación de Alison Mandel logró un rating de 36.7 puntos, mientras que Chilevisión alcanzó la cifra de 6.2 y Mega 3.5 pntos.
