i somehow never noticed the soft little "kirk..." right at the start here... it feels more impactful to hear spock intentionally switches to calling him jim after that to ground him, then captain to bolster his confidence once he's gotten ahold of himself again
From the novelization of And The Children Shall Lead episode
Kirks biggest fears are loosing the respect of his crew and being alone. Right as kirk is about to have what could be described as a magically induced panic attack from the episode's antagonist, he looks to spock and actually makes physical contact. It's not said if spock can feel the intense emotions thought the fabric or if kirk grabbed skin, but spock's touch telepathy and awareness of kirk's psychology has him acting fast to get kirk to a safe place quickly.
Spock knowing what kirk needs to hear for comfort and let's the guy cling to him when it's been established time and time again spock doesn't like to be touched.
Both of the fears they face in this episode are based on internal struggles, not external like sulu seeing swords flying at them. The fact that they're able to face said vulnerabilities while they have the other's presense to support them speaks volumes in how close they are.
And of course, kirk saying "my vulcan friend" to spock. If they're speaking federation standard and the book has been "translated" to english its not out of the question that he's using one of the definitions of t'hy'la, if he didn't use that word specifically (:
My favorite part of the book adaptations is that you get to read into the character's thoughts like this, and getting to see things described in a way that's not always obvious as it is in a visual format
Of course, the visuals have a lot to say too!
Edit: revised images to highlight certain parts of the text
to sum it up, this episode was equal parts stupid and disturbing. but as usual, here comes an observation:
spock and kirk had so much sexual tension in the turbolift scene, it literally felt like they were about kiss. how did people in the 60s not pick that up?
Bones most of the episode: You can’t ask these kids about what happened they’re traumatized they need to see a child psychiatrist.
End of the episode after Kirk literally shows them photos of their dead parents in order to turn them against the villain and all the kids are a sobbing mess
I’m watching And the children shall lead and I cannot not think about all the traumas Kirk has and that he remembers when he see those kids playing around him. Not with the face he does.
