'I need an outlet': Grieving relatives talk to lost loved ones on phone in the forest

OLYMPIA, Washington, June 12 (Reuters) - In the middle of a serene forest four miles from Washington state's capital, Olympia, sits a vintage rotary phone.

It is not connected to a telephone line and looks out of place.

But it has become a literal lifeline for people to speak words out loud to lost loved ones; words they never got the chance to say while they were still alive.

Corey Dembeck, 41, created and installed the original wind phone in the Pacific Northwest's Squaxin Park in late 2020, after learning about the death of their family friend's four-year-old daughter.

It was inspired by the original wind phone set up in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, ten years earlier.

"One morning, I woke up and went downstairs, and my wife looked shocked. She was like 'Joelle died,'" says Dembeck.

He has since moved away from Olympia but keeps in touch with the Sylvester family, whose young daughter Joelle Rose died suddenly after becoming sick with strep throat that triggered sepsis in her body.

"It messed me up, so I was like, right then and there, I'm going to build one of these things for them."

Dembeck, a U.S. Army veteran who worked as a photojournalist from 2000-2005, brought the phone, supplies and tools into the city-owned park and attached it to an old-growth cedar tree in a quiet area off a trail.

Dembeck, standing beside the phone almost three years later, says his reasoning behind sneaking it into the park was that it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission, especially because it was going to be something that was hard to explain.

After people learned of the phone and started visiting it in droves, the city decided to make it an official installation, removing it from the tree and working with Dembeck to create a signage board and plaque memorializing Joelle.

The plaque reads:

"This phone is for everyone who has ever lost a loved one. The phone is an outlet for those who have messages they wish to share with their friends and family. It is a phone for memories and saying the goodbyes you never got to say."

'I NEED AN OUTLET'

During a recent afternoon, Joelle's family paid a visit to the phone to celebrate her life.

Erin Sylvester, Joelle's mother, said they sometimes have pizza parties and invite friends to join them.

"I need the phone. I need an outlet. Because it's dedicated to my daughter, I feel like it's different than for someone else to come and use it," says Sylvester, 34, her eyes welling up with tears.

"Not being able to hear her voice on the other side of that phone can be very gut-wrenching. So, I usually come when none of my other coping mechanisms are working and I'm looking for a last-ditch effort."

Joelle's brothers, Jayden, 12, and Jonah, 8, and her sister, Joy, 5, take turns speaking into the handset, telling her how much they love and miss her, and place new photos on the post and keepsakes that she loved on top of the phone.

During their visit, a speckled brown and white barred owl lands on a branch of the cedar tree, just above the phone. The family is mesmerized.

Erin says owls were Joelle's "baby theme" when she was born. The same type of owl visited them recently in a similar way but at a different location.

"It's got to be a sign. There's no other way I can think about it ... that's not a fluke," says Joelle's father, Andre Sylvester, 37, wiping tears from his eyes.

Moments later, he picks up the phone to speak to his late daughter.

"I miss you. Thanks for showing up today. I miss you a lot."

Sylvester says, looking up at the branch where the owl perched moments before.

"I wish we could go take a walk around the block while I smoke my cigar and you tell everybody hi, and you pet every dog. I miss that."

Since the installation of Olympia's telephone, word of it has inspired other Americans to create ones across the country.

Dembeck has spoken by email and phone with many others who have installed a phone in honor of their loved ones.

He estimates there are now 50 across the United States.

Dembeck says everyone who tells him about using their phone also told him a tragic backstory.

"The fact that something simple like this immensely helped them, it's been really humbling," he says, adding he feels it's the greatest thing he has ever done.

After Work (2017): A Dark Take on Looney Tunes Character Archetypes in Modern and Classic Animation

I chose this 6-minute short film, produced by MATTE CG (Ecuador) in collaboration with Uson Studio (Spain) & Apus Estudios (Peru), as an outstanding example of animation technique and narrative. It holds high recognition in festivals and marks the final piece in my decade-by-decade analysis of animation, signifying the modern or post-modern era. This animated short seamlessly blends 3D techniques, liveaction integration and 2D traditional animation, depicting the life of the rabbit protagonist Goompy after work.

When you watch it, it feels like a tribute or a love letter to animation classics, particularly the Looney Tunes, the series of short American films produced by Warner Bros (aired from 1930 to 1969, considered the golden age of American animation). However, as you delve deeper, there's a darker twist in the humanization of one of the character's archetypes that these cartoons commonly represent.

‘Groompy is a rabbit playing the lead in a popular cartoon series, but after work his life is dull and monotonous, one night the object he so much desires appears in front of him him... the carrot from the cartoons.’ -MATTE CG

"After Work" delves into a universally relatable theme: a routine life of work, TV, sleep, work, media, and sleep. Nevertheless, it illustrates the feeling of meaningless work, sleeplessness, reliance on pills, and the weariness or boredom that spirals into deeper mental health issues.

The short draws upon the classic archetypes seen in iconic characters like Willie E. Coyote, Sylvester the Cat, or Tom Cat Sir. from Tom and Jerry. It mirrors the trope where a larger, stronger character chases after a weaker, smaller prey, often leading to comedic and at times, cruel interactions where the smaller character outsmarts or tricks the larger one. For many who grew up watching these Warner Brothers shorts, these ''stronger and big'' characters invoked empathy, transcending mere comedy to a point where their struggles seemed genuine, portraying physical and emotional mistreatment by the little ones.

Life teaches us the value of empathy rather than just sympathy, shedding light on characters like Tom, Sylvester, and Wile E., each facing their own set of challenges and setbacks. The film delves into what if these characters were actual stars of the shows, maybe they might have had lives altered by the psychological impact of their relentless pursuits, hinting at a deeper, less glamorous reality, and that is what Groompy's life look like in After Work.

Another type of comparisons can be related to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)" highlight how both films explore the lives of cartoons post-stardom, delving into their humanity. For instance, in "Roger Rabbit," there are scenes where Roger Rabbit indulges in alcohol, and in "After Work," we witness the emotional struggles in Groompy's life. But for one of the directors, Andres Aguilar, Roger Rabbit’s characters are still too cartoonish in the ‘real world’. On the other hand, Groompy is not, he has lost all cartoon enthusiam for living and cartoons characteristic energy.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

The films employ different techniques: "Roger Rabbit" combines live-action with animation, while "After Work" separates each "world" (the show / real life) using 2D vs. 3D/3D integration and live action techniques, respectively. However, in "After Work," as the plot progresses, the necessity arises to blend both 2D and 3D techniques as Groompy's mental health starts to deteriorate.

This short has unique camera angles and famous Latin American paintings strategically placed as Easter eggs in the background, have left a memorable mark. The short film was directed by Luis Usón, co-directed by Andrés Aguilar, and their respective studios (Uson Studios and MATTE CG). A team of 30-40 individuals oversaw every aspect, from character development to animation and logistic to the original soundtrack. The Apus Peruvian studio's, now a leading studio in Latam was recently emerging and joined in 2D animation aided in meeting timelines.

I had the opportunity to connect with one of the directors, Andrés Aguilar (Ichi), for an interview. He explained that for the live-action integration, Usón took a meticulous approach, creating and shooting 1:1-scale sets for authenticity. This involved constructing the main stage apartment in an industrial building in Coruña, Spain. They shot every scene twice, both with and without an actor, allowing them to incorporate Groompy later. However, they later fully recreated the set in CGI for the sequence where Groompy destroys his apartment.

Despite its costliness and the ambitious nature of the project for Ecuador at that time, which took about two and a half years to complete, the team's commitment to quality remained unwavering throughout the process. This dedication led to the film being part of the official selection at Annecy 2018, Siggraph, receiving a Quirino Awards nomination, and winning the Animago Award for Best Short Film, among other festival honors. To this day, comments continue to pour in, praising...
