'I need an outlet': Grieving relatives talk to lost loved ones on phone in the forest
Tumblr media
By Matt Mcknight
13 June 2023
OLYMPIA, Washington, June 12 (Reuters) - In the middle of a serene forest four miles from Washington state's capital, Olympia, sits a vintage rotary phone.
It is not connected to a telephone line and looks out of place.
But it has become a literal lifeline for people to speak words out loud to lost loved ones; words they never got the chance to say while they were still alive.
Corey Dembeck, 41, created and installed the original wind phone in the Pacific Northwest's Squaxin Park in late 2020, after learning about the death of their family friend's four-year-old daughter.
It was inspired by the original wind phone set up in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, ten years earlier.
"One morning, I woke up and went downstairs, and my wife looked shocked. She was like 'Joelle died,'" says Dembeck.
He has since moved away from Olympia but keeps in touch with the Sylvester family, whose young daughter Joelle Rose died suddenly after becoming sick with strep throat that triggered sepsis in her body.
"It messed me up, so I was like, right then and there, I'm going to build one of these things for them."
Dembeck, a U.S. Army veteran who worked as a photojournalist from 2000-2005, brought the phone, supplies and tools into the city-owned park and attached it to an old-growth cedar tree in a quiet area off a trail.
Dembeck, standing beside the phone almost three years later, says his reasoning behind sneaking it into the park was that it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission, especially because it was going to be something that was hard to explain.
After people learned of the phone and started visiting it in droves, the city decided to make it an official installation, removing it from the tree and working with Dembeck to create a signage board and plaque memorializing Joelle.
The plaque reads:
"This phone is for everyone who has ever lost a loved one. The phone is an outlet for those who have messages they wish to share with their friends and family. It is a phone for memories and saying the goodbyes you never got to say."
'I NEED AN OUTLET'
Tumblr media
During a recent afternoon, Joelle's family paid a visit to the phone to celebrate her life.
Erin Sylvester, Joelle's mother, said they sometimes have pizza parties and invite friends to join them.
"I need the phone. I need an outlet. Because it's dedicated to my daughter, I feel like it's different than for someone else to come and use it," says Sylvester, 34, her eyes welling up with tears.
"Not being able to hear her voice on the other side of that phone can be very gut-wrenching. So, I usually come when none of my other coping mechanisms are working and I'm looking for a last-ditch effort."
Joelle's brothers, Jayden, 12, and Jonah, 8, and her sister, Joy, 5, take turns speaking into the handset, telling her how much they love and miss her, and place new photos on the post and keepsakes that she loved on top of the phone.
Tumblr media
During their visit, a speckled brown and white barred owl lands on a branch of the cedar tree, just above the phone. The family is mesmerized.
Erin says owls were Joelle's "baby theme" when she was born. The same type of owl visited them recently in a similar way but at a different location.
"It's got to be a sign. There's no other way I can think about it ... that's not a fluke," says Joelle's father, Andre Sylvester, 37, wiping tears from his eyes.
Moments later, he picks up the phone to speak to his late daughter.
"I miss you. Thanks for showing up today. I miss you a lot."
Sylvester says, looking up at the branch where the owl perched moments before.
"I wish we could go take a walk around the block while I smoke my cigar and you tell everybody hi, and you pet every dog. I miss that."
Tumblr media
Since the installation of Olympia's telephone, word of it has inspired other Americans to create ones across the country.
Dembeck has spoken by email and phone with many others who have installed a phone in honor of their loved ones.
He estimates there are now 50 across the United States.
Dembeck says everyone who tells him about using their phone also told him a tragic backstory.
"The fact that something simple like this immensely helped them, it's been really humbling," he says, adding he feels it's the greatest thing he has ever done.

So this has been something that's been asked for a few times, so after a long times work, here we have it! A hypothetical voice cast for the characters of Autobot Academy. If there's a character you don't see, it's as we don't want to rush figuring out a character. We may update this list in the future, however it'll be in our own time, so we won't be taking any questions about specific missing characters. And hey, if you have your own voices that don't match up with these, then feel free to stick with that!

Hi!! For the ask game "pistol" and "bow and arrow" ! 👀
(also I don't know if you've seen it yet, but reinaeiry just dropped a new song !! 💃‍)
salut cécile ! merci pour la demande :)
my answers got a bit out of hand, especially for pistol, so i'm putting it under a read more
pistol: which character has your favorite introduction?
i haven't written a lot of introductions yet tbh. like,, i skipped the introduction of erin's in-laws even though that's the opening of chapter one lmao
of my current wips, i think my favourite introduction is of cora and cousin hugo. (cousin hugo is always specified like that because erin's younger brother is also named hugo . . . royal names smh). chapter one takes place during the winter solstice ball and at one point, erin is snatched by her sister (cora) to fawn over the dresses. it's a tradition that her, cora, and cousin hugo have had for a while. i think it's really sweet and shows the relationship between cora and erin, while also hinting at lingering tensions from the war where i left off
Cora led Erin to the edge of the ballroom where Cousin Hugo hovered. He grinned toothily as they approached. “Erin! What's your favourite dress so far?” “I must say I like Lady Sylvester’s.” Erin nodded to where Calandra Sylvester was in conversation with a few other ladies. She wore a burgundy gown with puffed sleeves and lace looped in waves across the bottom hem. “The lace is gorgeous, wouldn't you agree?” “I see that, but my favourite is Aunt Cornelia’s,” Cora said. “The gold-on-gold detailing is beautiful on her.” Cousin Hugo snorted, a breach of etiquette allowed only on solstices. “You always pick Aunt Cornelia's ‘cause you share a name.” She gasped, covering her mouth with a hand. “Hugo, you wound me. I would never fall to such biases.” “Yet you do,” Erin remarked. She giggled. “Lies.”
on a side note, i don't have any concrete plans to publish this but if i did, erin's family tree would probably be quite helpful to readers
bow & arrow: which of your settings would you most like to visit?
i don't particularly want to visit vallera even though it'd be interesting; it's a country in the wake of a civil war. the economy, agriculture, politics, alliances — everything is still changing and recovering. i . . . don't really want to go in the middle of that.
i'd love to visit the kingdoms, which i haven't talked about yet beyond the blurb on my writeblr intro & aesthetics that i've reblogged lol
i love the cultures i've been developing and would love to walk among them for a bit. they're all so diverse and it would be a m a z i n g to see that in person. i have a self-indulgent idea or two or three of these kinds of scenarios because why not lol i'd also love to meet my most beloved oc! she's That Character that every twelve year old makes who used to be op and mary-sue-ish but then i shoved trauma and character development into her so she's better now. but yeah. i'd definitely love to visit the kingdoms.
(also reinaeiry's new song was on my watch later but i can listen now! thanks for the reminder. her and anna came out with new songs at the same time so listening to both! and eee the art on eiry's is so good?? also her voice obvs. i just- yes. reinaeiry. yes. i've actually been listening to her oops i did it again on repeat, it's just -chef's kiss- . . . also anna's cover of stella jang's villain as top tier and also worth checking out)

Chained NEW CHAPTER
A Klaus Hargreeves Murder Mystery
A/N: This fic is not dead! It was just resting. Sorry, everyone - I’ve been horribly busy and I’m the world’s slowest writer. I also got a bit sidetracked by a new WIP, at which I’m chipping away in a similarly glacial fashion, but I have this whole thing plotted out and I’m determined to make it to the end. Thanks so much for sticking with it, kind people. And, if you’re enjoying it, please share your thoughts, theories and most appreciated keysmashes in the comments - your encouragement keeps the writer’s block at bay. 😘❤️
CW: Drug stuff, knife stuff. Murder stuff.
Thanks: To @allisoooon for this incredible banner and for the beautiful magazine cover featuring Gary’s sister Sarah (aka Erin Moriarty).
Snippet from Chapter 24: Knife: “You owe her,” Ben reminds him. “She saved your scrawny ass back there and she didn’t have to.”
That much is true. He ought to be locked up by now for breaking into Gary’s house and scaring the bejesus out of Mona. If it weren’t for Sarah, he’d be limping around the county jail. It was lucky she was there - and Klaus isn’t used to strokes of luck. He certainly isn’t used to beautiful blondes sweeping in and rescuing him.
“Hey, uh, do you think Sarah only did that to be nice? Or do you think maybe…”
Klaus doesn’t finish the sentence. He doesn’t have to. Ben stops walking and folds his arms over his chest. His jaw pops open and the next words jump from his chest on a derisive burst of laughter. “Ha! You have a crush.”
“What? No.” But the protest sounds insincere, even to Klaus. Transparent, like Tupperware. Damn Ben for knowing him inside and out. It’s impossible to have a single private thought with him around. Klaus can’t even shit without Ben knowing the texture of his dumps.
“I hope not,” snorts Ben. “Because she’d never be interested in someone like you. Sarah is the youngest CEO in the Fortune 500. A former Olympic athlete. She’s friends with the Hilton sisters. You wouldn’t stand a chance.”
“How… how do you know all this?”
Ben shrugs. “The 30 under 30 to watch. She was number 17.”
The magazine from the hospital. Ben is like a sponge, soaking up information wherever he goes. If only he could soak up something useful, like a licence plate number.
Tumblr media
Klaus frowns and turns his face away from Ben so his brother can’t read it. “You really think she’d never…”
“Klaus. Please. She’s the child of a billionaire.”
“So am I,” says Klaus, defensive.
“You also sleep in dumpsters. Besides, it’s weird. You’ve been with her dead brother.”
Klaus chuckles to himself. “Well, wouldn’t be the first time. Remember the Sylvester twins?”
Ben pulls a face. Ben remembers. It was messy and complicated and filled with drama. And the breakup in the end was epic. So much criminal damage.
“Just be a good friend to her and stop being a horny pervert.”

Here is my recap of the Oh The Horror! (The Rocky Horror Glee Show) episode of the podcast.
Apparently there is a debate if Rocky Horror Show is a musical. Well Kevin said it’s a musical and Jenna said it’s a movie with music in it.
Jenna said they are spicy today.
This was Glee’s first tribute to a musical.
Kevin mentioned this was Glee’s Halloween episode.
The episode aired on October 26, 2010.
The #1 song was Like a G6 by Far East Movement/
The #1 movie was Paranormal Activity 2.
Kevin and Jenna don’t watch scary movies.
Kevin saw the first Paranormal Activity because Lea forced him to see it. He said seeing the first one was enough.
On October 28th, Lea and Matt performed in the 35th Anniversary Tribute of Rocky Horror at the Wiltern in LA. Lea was Janet and Matt was Brad. Jenna said that it was kind of weird because Mr. Schue was there teacher but not really weird. Barry Bostwick and Tim Curry were there raising money for the Painted Turtle Summer Camp for children that are chronically or terminally ill. Jenna and Kevin said they don’t remember this at all. Jenna said maybe they didn’t tell us about it.
This episode was directed by Adam Shankman. This was the first episode he directed. He also directed things like Wedding Planner and A Walk To Remember. He most recently directed Disenchanted and produced of Hocus Pocus 2. Adam likes to make cameos in his projects. Jenna said she thinks he tried to get himself in Glee but doesn’t know if he was successful.
Jenna said they went to a couple of Halloween parties that year. They went to Erin, the key make up artist for Glee, and Jenna said she throws the best parties. Jenna was Christina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy. Kevin was the Gingerbread man. Naya was a Barbie in a box. At some point Naya and Kevin changed costumes. Telly was Ursula. Naya and Jenna helped him with his make-up. Eric helped him airbrush his tentacles. Jenna said this was party was one for the books. Jenna and Naya went to Dianna’s party. They were tooted and booted. Jenna talked about a party she threw with Dianna. Jenna said lots of Halloween stuff. Kevin said so much fun Halloween stuff.
This episode has some great cameos from Rocky Horror people. Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf are both in this episode courting Sue Sylvester.
John Stamos is back and just crushing and a singing his face off.
Jenna said thank god it’s not all Rocky Horror and one random song like Only Exception that was at the end of Britney/Brittany.
Jenna goes through the line-up of music for this episode.
Kevin said he has such distinct memories of some of these songs.
It was a fun episode but it was also really hard.
There is not a lot of story or huge changes but here we go.
Will finds out Emma likes Rocky Horror and has been going to see it with Carl. He then makes the weeks assignment Rocky Horror as the musical. He goes to cast it. Finn gets a little worried about his image. Will gets in trouble with Carl and Sue is obviously trying to bring down the Glee club again.
Frank-N-Furter was Mike but his parents won’t let him so Mercedes takes over.
Janet was played by Rachel.
Brad was played by Finn.
Riff Raff was played by Kurt. Jenna said it was so good. She remembered Chris really loving Rocky Horror and he was excited to play Riff Raff.
Magenta was double cast and played by Quinn and Santana.
Columbia was double cast and played by Tina and Brittany.
Rocky was played by both Sam and Will.
Eddie was played by both Mike and Carl.
Usherette Trixie was played by Santana.
The Transylvanians were played Mercedes, Tina, Quinn and Artie.
They were playing a lot of characters because there were only so many cast members.
Stamos mentioned he was supposed to play Frank-N-Furter at one point but it got kiboshed early on. Jenna asked Ian what he remembers from that time. He tried to do a voice text but it didn’t work. He said his voice was really foggy and he sounded like a sexy lady. Anyways, he said he might be conflating with the plot of the show but his gut when she first asked that question was that it was a note from the studio or network that they couldn’t have a grown man cavorting with television teenagers. Other then that it was a fun episode but it was hard to right because there were a lot of changes. Jenna said what she took from that was it was a studio network note that it couldn’t be a grown man playing that part which is why John became Eddie and then Harry became Eddie.
Kevin said before they did this he had never seen Rocky Horror so Jenna sat him down and watched it with him. Kevin was like what is this and Jenna was like you don’t get this unless there are the performances. Jenna first saw it in 2004 or 2005. Part of her college orientation week was going to see Rocky Horror. She said it is such a theater school thing. They went at midnight and watched it.
Kevin said Adam Shankman crushed this episode. He said everything Adam directs makes you feel good. He doesn’t know how and maybe it was just this episode. He said he felt like he was wrapped in a warm blanket. As crazy as Rocky Horror is it felt nice and warm. Jenna said Adam made all of them feel that way behind the scenes. Kevin said Adam changed things up. They. Had Eric the week before who more strict and did things his way. Adam is a choreographer and comes from the music episode. He was in the recording studio with them which never happens. The last time this had happened was during Showmance. Adam knew exactly who was going to be singing what and at what time and every single shot to plan all these things out. Kevin said it was very nerve wracking and he met Adam in the recording studio and he didn’t have anything prepared.
Zach was like Adam’s protege.
Adam became one of their favorites and became a friend. He worked with Naya on Step Up.
Jenna said she thinks most of this episode plot wise revolved mainly around they production of the musical. They had never done a tribute to a musical or a musical in school at all. Jenna was like oh well the school does musicals now. They can’t remember if they did musicals before and then remembered they did West Side Story and Grease. There was also mention of Sandy doing Cabaret at one point. Kevin said yeah we suck.
The musical is making everyone feel some type of way. Will gets jealous because he sees Carl is making Emma feel better because they are going to Rocky Horror screenings. Kevin points out this is a real thing. You go at midnight, people scream, and participate, and dress up. Emma left the crust on her sandwich at lunch. Will is again using the Glee club for personal gain. He somehow ropes Carl and Emma into being a part of the show with casting and stuff. Carl ends up getting pissed at Will.
The episode starts with Naya’s lips singing. Kevin said it is so good. Jenna said she is so good at stuff like this. Her lips look great. Her teeth look great. It was a great shot. Jenna said she remembers them doing this. Naya stayed after at the end of the day. She had black around her lips. it was so good.
Kevin said it was so much fun to get to see everyone play this and it was a blast. Jenna said they got to take it to the nth degree. Everything was heightened even more then it is already heightened on the show.
The first part of the episode plays in a flashback with Carl interrupting the dress rehearsal because Will broke their pact of staying away from Emma and not messing with the relationship. Kevin asked Jenna if she remembers filming this scene. Jenna said briefly. Kevin said he doesn’t know why his strongest memory of anything with this episode is this scene. They were back behind wooden cutouts of trees and bushes for what felt like an eternity. It was early days of working with Adam and they didn’t know how he worked yet. They were shooting wide on the stage so the cameras were far away from them and they didn’t know what was going on and kept peaking out from behind bushes. They also were taking pictures of each other in their crazy costume. The stage was filled with fog and people were like it’s making me sick. Kevin said it felt like they were back there for an entire day and it seems like such a quick and easy scene and they were miserable waiting. Jenna said there were multiple parts to it. You also had Sam’s entrance in the gold shorts. Chord still has them. Kevin said he keeps threatening them to put them back on. Jenna said put them back on Chordy, put them back on. Jenna said yes she does remember that now. She also remembers Adam hanging out a lot with them during that day. He was on stage on stage with them and very involved in it.
So then we rewind to a week ago. We learn that Will has been talking to Emma and finds out she has been doing all these thing to take herself out of her comfort zone. This is where he learns about Rocky Horror and gets the idea to do it as the school musical. The Glee club is surprised to hear they are doing Rocky Horror but yeah sure it’s like going on home and watching MTV. You are like yeah I get to do something fun and racy. Then we get into the casting. Rachel and Finn were Brad and Janet.
Kevin said he loved getting to watch them do Dammit Janet. He said it’s very much two episodes ago where they were sabotaging themselves doing that terrible number. It felt like that sort of camp. You also had Quinn, Mercedes, and Kurt in the background playing such weird things. Jenna said she remembers laughing while shooting this. Kevin said Dianna and Chris were really thriving this episode. Jenna said this is very much in their wheelhouse. Kevin said they are a couple of talent talented little weirdos and this was perfect for them.
Mike volunteers for Frank-N-Furter for now. The girls are all double cast.
Carl threatens everyone with a good time. Emma puts him up to singing Hot Patootie in the classroom with everyone. John talked about being nervous doing and Kevin said you watch it and he was so effortlessly cool and good. Will tells Carl he cut that character from the script. Jenna said it felt like Will really had it out for Carl. Sue happens to be there and says no this is great we can still have this character. Mercedes steps up and says she would like a lead role and I think I could kill doing Sweet Transvestite playing Frank-N-Furter. Jenna said she absolutely killed it and she loved doing it. Kevin said it was so good. It was one of the best adaptations of a song. Jenna said also watching Heather and Naya behind her. Kevin said they were going so hard.
Jenna said she would like to point out Mercedes got a whole set with an elevator. Where did this set come from and who funded it? Cheerleading and Glee’s budgets were getting cut because of the new football coach and yet they had a gigantic set with an elevator that never gets seen by an audience because the show gets canned. When did it get built? Kevin said the timeline is very fuzzy in this episode. Jenna said it was like I Dream Of Jeannie meets Glee. Kevin said that set was incredible. Jenna said Amber just killed.
The other scene that happens on the set where they were doing the Brad, Janet, scene. Kevin looked over at Jenna and someone else and they were like we are over this we’ve got to get out here because they were in the most uncomfortable costume and wigs. Jenna said it was her and Heather. She said the sequin outfit for Columbia made her feel like a clown. She felt like a Korean grandma clown. Jenna doesn’t like wigs or a lot of costume. The make-up wasn’t her favorite. Heather and Jenna were both very uncomfortable during the Time Warp. They were there until like 1 am. It took a very long time. It looked incredible and everyone was giving 110%. Kevin said he thinks there is a difference when the director, like Paris or Adam, comes from a music background it makes a difference. He said Time Warp was flawless.
This was also where Kevin inappropriately read the room. He was like when I look at us, growing up we would use our imagination to play dress up and now we are doing that and getting paid for it. Everyone was like shut up Kevin, no one cares, wrong time. Kevin said he just wanted everyone to eat rainbows. He said sorry about that and easy for him to say he had very little to do in this episode. Jenna said so did I but the costumes were next level uncomfortable. The sequins were scratching. She will never forget it or do it again. She said Time Warp was really hard. The couple minutes at a time theyw ere shooting it were the best. They were having a blast and they looked insane. Kevin said that is us at our best .
Will calls Emma into the room to talk about the show. He decides he will play Rocky because he thinks it’s inappropriate for Sam. Sam was feeling self conscious. Will had his own motivations for playing a character in the show. Kevin said side not, poor Chord trying to get into those shorts, he was probably eating less then what Sam said he was eating in this episode. Jenna said he looked good though.
Will and Emma do Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me. This is another Brittany and Santana moment of pure joy. Jenna said she was reeling. Kevin said that he loved that they found out this was Jayma’s audition song. She sounds so good. Also, Matt was ripped. Jenna said her memory of the guys in this episode was that they were all on the same diet. Theyw ere all working real hard. She thinks Brad Falchuck might have been training him or giving him a regiment to follow to get ready for this scene. She remembers Cory being stressed about this cause he naturally didn’t have to get undressed like Matt did or Mark or Chord. This was Chords big debut. She remembers all of them stressing hard this episode. She said you know what get it. Girls have to worry about this all the time. She said she really liked that scene. It was nice to turn the tables on you guys for one second which was great. Kevin said he remembers Ryan telling them about when Mario Lopez was on Nip/Tuck and he had a sweet potato diet he would do to dehydrate himself and that got passed along to Chord and Matt and everyone. Jenna said you eat a lot of sweet potatoes for a couple of days and you don’t have any water and the night before you drink water and your skin sticks to the muscle or well that is Jenna’s understanding of it. She said she thinks the guys did the sweet potato diet a couple of times during the series. Kevin said oh absolutely and its not a healthy thing to do. Jenna says they don’t support that behavior.
Kevin mentions that during that scene Santana says earlier today Artie asked if he could make a gigantic omelette when I am done with the ostrich eggs I am smuggling in my bra. He said Artie continuously is misogynistic, sexist, and terrible to women. Jenna said they kept throwing it at Artie and just want someone to blame. Kevin mentions that Artie blamed it on internet porn and says it altered the female brain chemistry and made them more like men, thus more concerned with men’s bodies. Kevin said he is stupid, stupid person.
Kevin said should we talk about Sue. Jenna said yes. Sue is doing one of her incredible Sue’s Corners. We have Meatloaf and Barry Bostwick that we’re representing the network and Fox News her and we’re like we want you to do this undercover story. Let them do it and you will when a local Emmy. Sue agrees and places herself in the center of everything. They talked about the Janet Brad scene. He said the scene is edited crazily but that is how it was shot. He said it was really hard to get the rhythm. They were the scripts the scene within that scene in Rocky Horror. The order changed and Sue had a different line every time. It took them a hot minute to get it and Kevin remembers people getting frustrated because they were not totally nailing it ever. He said he thinks everyone was just getting a little frustrated. Jenna said she checked out because she wasn’t in that scene. This all comes tumbling down when Becky goes to Schue’s office for candy for Halloween and it’s not happening so she tells Will to come with her and says Rocky Horror is an abomination or we’ll hat is what Sue says. She then shows him the prerecorded outing of the investigation that Sue was doing on the Glee club and the show. Kevin said he doesn’t agree with all her points but this was the most reasonable Sue’s Corner she had ever done. Jenna said it was the most focused. Kevin said when Sue sits will down and says did I say anything wrong, this was one of the self referential things that Ian talks about and Will was like well I didn’t really disagree with it and he is going to pull the show. Sue can’t get her Emmy if he pulls the show. Kevin said everyone was getting to have a great time and do really fun things this episode. Jenna said it was different and fun and really shook things up.
Kevin said it felt special that they got to have Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf. Jenna said she didn’t get to meet them. Kevin said he doesn’t remember. Jenna said her dad got to meet Meatloaf once.
Kevin asked Jenna if she was hoping they did musicals they didn’t do or if there was any she would have liked to do. Jenna said she thinks there were talks to do Spring Awakening. Kevin I said that would have been super meta. Jenna said another show did it, they think it was Rise. She said no, the focus wasn’t really on the school musicals. She said West Side Story was really fun and she was glad she had a bigger part in it She also had bigger part in Grease which was weird. Kevin said he wasn’t in either of them so he doesn’t remember them. Jenna mentioned he directed Grease. He said he was not in all those scenes so he doesn’t remember.
Kevin said that is sort of it. Jenna said that is sort of the episode. It is very much built around the tribute to Rocky Horror. Kevin said it really got to show off everyone. It showed of Stamos’ singing abilities. It showed of Chord’s body. It showed all of your guys bodies. Those outfits were insane. Jenna said hey were pretty crazy. The Columbia outfit wasn’t her favorite but the other ones she really enjoyed. She said it was easier then some of Tina’s actual clothes.
Tartie Takes:
Cringe Moment/Ouches - Artie for sure saying those terrible things but also when Mike says he can’t do it he says his parents don’t want him playing a tranny.
Best Dance Move - All the background moments in all the songs.
Best Song - Sweet Transvestite
Best Prop - Kevin’s is the stage and Jenna is Riff Raff’s duster
Best Line - Kevin said there is a very well placed wonky. Jenna said overall Santana going after Carl and Mercedes being like stop.
Shit We Found On TikTok:
Kevin mentioned a fan they have met on TikTok that is an incredible musician. She sang to Kevin when then met in Liverpool last year. She is the #1 Kevin McHale so he has to shout her out. Kevin said Rose is awesome.

Can't stop thinking about your Irm girl, got any other tidbits about her?
irmgard essex (who i love dearly) was my pc in a fallout ttrpg run by @corsairesix (erin my beloved) and put aside bc of irl stuff. the game took place in new orleans and like holy shit. it was so good. erin is so deeply talented and i love her. i actually have a tag for the game, though it's pretty short. it was a homebrew system and like. god it was so fucking good. i also don't feel bad about sharing the google doc that's her character sheet lol. it's got some notes about her and stuff
here is an incomplete list of things irmgard esseks has done:
one time the party went into a super duper mart to get a single shopping cart. (we needed it for transporting a people maker tube) of course we got attacked by ghouls and out of the 6 of us, irmgard was the only fucking person who landed a single shot, and was the one who dealt with it. it was a moment that really solidified her role in the group for me, she suddenly realized she had a reason to exist. i still bring up about how i was the only one who landed a shot in that fight
basically had 0 personality at the start of the game. it'd been like 4 years since the institute kicked it and she stopped internalizing a lot of what she learned there. i think her thought process was "well maybe other synths don't go insane and crazy living like this but i have and i'm not a real person like those other synths"
eventually her personality became "i would die for by best friend dacian and sweet caroline, because she is very nice"
dacian is a pskyer and she didn't believe he could read minds and blast his thoughts into other people's heads. he proved he was able to and she decided to not believe it like it was some kind of religious thing.
she had 0 opinions about another party member, sylvester "the lonesome" but her existence made him feel insecure about his place on the team, especially after she looted a pipboy off a dude she killed. (he was the only one who had a pipboy before that.)
it was INCREDIBLY funny bc he was so jelous that she's like 6'3 and built like an action hero and meanwhile she's like "wow i'm so good at acting like a human. everyone here thinks i am a normal human. i am getting a good grade in being normal which is possible to achieve and normal to want"
sylvester was the only person in the party who wasn't keenly aware of how fucked up she was and pretending not to notice
one time got banned from the actual city of downtown new orleans bc she killed a guard, wore his uniform, snuck into the jail, and broke out one of sweet caroline's neighbors. this ended up getting everyone banned from new orleans aside from hannah.
one time the party found a terminal in an abandoned outpost that was filled with dirt on the current mayor/dictator of their favorite town. she made a fake email account and sent everyone who owned a computer in that town a zip file of all those documents. no one knew aside from the party and like 2 other people knew she did it
also thought that a good way to sabotage the current mayor was to find some random ass child and pay that kid to lie and say they're the biological child of the mayor and the product of an affair, and the mayor chose to leave his own flesh and blood on the streets to save face.
according to the stats, she's one of the smartest members of the party.
this is the only fiction i've ever written about her, and i've never bothered to uploaded it but it's her back when she was just X6-33 and killing people for the institute. she had more of a personality then bc she was secure in her place as being simply a weapon and nothing else
she picked the last name “essex” because it was close sounding to her designation of X6
lately we've been kicking around the idea of like. what would our characters been like 5 years later and this is her! she is butch and has resolved all her issues around the concept of her being a person! idk maybe she helps the railroad now. dacian and her have nail painting sessions though

A Week in the Life: Jennifer Clapp’s C Square Scholarship Adventure in Aiken
At the tail end of 2023, we shared the exciting news that Courtney Cooper of C Square Farm and Excel Sport Horses was launching a scholarship opportunity for two amateur riders to immerse themselves in the whirlwind of life on a professional yard for a week that would be jam-packed with education and opportunities. Now, we’re delighted to share the diary of the first of those scholarship winners, Jennifer Clapp, who ventured down to Aiken with her Connemara, Muggsy, to put her out-of-office time to great use. Take, it away, Jennifer!
Jennifer and Muggsy dive into Aiken life – and the water complex at Vista.
Wow! What a week! It was a total immersion into the Aiken horse life. As a public high school teacher, my time off is very prescribed. Luckily, I was able to take my February vacation week to head down to C Square Farm South to do nothing but spend time with horses.
Before I get to the day by day play by play, I just wanted to say that Courtney, her working student Nathan, her college intern Beth, barn manager Emily, and fellow amateurs Kathleen, Kelly, and Seth all went out of their way to make sure I had a fun and rewarding week.
Day 1:
After a very long day shipping down (17 hours plus a snow storm), we settled in well — Muggsy was super happy to run around on the nice sandy ground and have a really good roll. We spent the morning at Stable View, where Courtney and some of her students were competing. In the afternoon, I watched a couple of training sets and had a dressage lesson, where we got Muggsy to really loosen up his back and soften his poll, especially when he got a little looky. He finished very relaxed and soft in his body, which was great after the long ride.
Day 2:
A beautiful Aiken day on the farm! It was a busy one. I watched Courtney ride a young horse for the second day in a row and it was impressive to see how much he relaxed and got much more confident in his work. Courtney had two Zoom lessons with Peter Gray on her two upper level horses, which were fascinating to watch. I was so caught up in the second lesson I almost didn’t have time to get ready for my own jump set!
Our jump set focused on balance and rhythm; we started with trotting poles, first on a straight line, then bending through the corner, helping the horses to develop and maintain a consistent rhythm. Once they were confident there, we incorporated two sets of raised cavaletti as well as the original poles. The initial responses to the raised cavaletti varied; some over-achievers tried to bounce them or walked; luckily, Muggsy is a pro at figuring out the easiest way to get something done and he trotted neatly through them. The next step was trotting a course of small fences, including one with placement poles; the exercise encouraged the horses to maintain their own rhythm and be responsible for their own balance. By the time we moved to cantering a course, all of the horses were well prepared to jump, land, and turn in balance.
A chilly morning at Bruce’s Field.
Day 3:
We started off bright and early with a trip over to Bruce’s Field for their Tuesday jumper show. Muggsy and I had fresh tracks in the ring, with him blowing little puffs of smoke since it was still so chilly. I definitely was a little unprepared for Aiken’s cold mornings! We did two trips and had significant improvement between the two. Muggsy is on the smaller end, so we’ve been working to get the adjustability we need to be able to make it down the lines well and Courtney helped me find the right canter and approach (gotta come forward through the corners!) to make it happen.
Our afternoon was spent at cross country schooling; Courtney had four horses from training to advanced to school with Erin Sylvester and then taught two upper level students, Kathleen and Kelly. Watching them school some tough questions was both educational and inspiring.
Day 4:
Another bright and early morning in the ring. Kathleen and I reset the jump course, practicing our accuracy in setting a couple of gymnastics and some single fences. Then we two and Courtney took three of the horses who had schooled cross country the day before for a hack on one of Aiken’s classic red roads, successfully navigating goats, chickens, and backyard decorations. Then it was off to the Vista! Muggsy started out being company for one of Courtney’s home breds who was going out for his first xc school. Despite being normally very chill, he totally failed at this job, spooking a shadow on the ground and what I can only assume was a bear (or maybe a dragon?) in the other field. Fortunately, Ghost, our buddy, was calm beyond his years!  He took everything in stride and it was really fun to watch him confidently trot all the elementary fences, the ditch, the bank, and the water with ever increasing joy. His face said, “look what I can do!”
It took Muggsy a minute to get back into cross-country mode(I could almost hear him saying, “But it’s February!”), but he soon settled in and we had a great ride, with highlights being his bold jump over a coop with brush into the water and a super straight and forward approach to a corner.
Once we got home, I flatted Kathleen’s lovely young horse Curley and then set jumps as Courtney jumped three; the gymnastics we set that morning systematically prepared the horses as we built them up. Courtney was dragging the ring in the dark as we finished up!
Cross-country schooling with Muggsy at Vista.
Day 5:
We started the morning off watching Courtney jump Kathleen’s lovely preliminary horse Excel Star Harry, whom she bought from Courtney as a four year old and has brought through her first two-star. Then I got to jump Curley, a six-year-old former steeplechaser who has just a fantastic rhythm and jump. He used a whole different set of muscles than my muffin of a Connemara!  Then it was back to the Vista, for cross-country schooling for Courtney’s student Seth and jumping in the derby field for her student Kelly and some of the horses who were heading to Pine Top that weekend. I finished the day in the most Aiken way possible: a long slow road hack for Muggsy and drinks at the Wilcox!  Kathleen and I headed in to meet some of my Area 1 friends (the best!); Seth and Kelly joined us later. It was one of those great moments in the eventing community, where a group of folks from all over (Areas 1, 2, and 8 represented!) with all kinds of different backgrounds can come together and have a great time based on the common denominator of eventing and our love of horses.
Day 6:
Pine Top!  It was exciting to visit this beautiful venue. We had the pleasure of watching Courtney ride her homebred River in his first Advanced dressage and show jumping, followed by her mare Maeve in the Intermediate. After spending some time watching all the big guns in the show jumping, we set out to walk the cross-country. It’s been a while since I’ve been up close to an Advanced course — Area 1 only has one left — and this one was BIG and, in some places, SKINNY! Looking at the tables, I could only think that Muggsy’s primary response, if I pointed him at one, would be to bank them. There was certainly plenty of room to do so!  The course was across a beautiful piece of land and the footing was perfect. After our course walk, we headed back to the farm to flat and go for a golden hour hack through the woods. It truly was a picture perfect ending to a wonderful week.
As I rolled out of bed at 2:15 the next morning to make the drive home (18+ hours this time!  I’d almost take snow over NYC traffic…), it felt like I had been in another world for a month, not a week. Every day was jam-packed with horses and educational opportunities; I never walked less than 30,000 steps in a day (admittedly, some of that was on horseback). It was the kind of immersion in the sport that I can almost never take the time to do. I came away with many tools for everything, from starting a nervous young horse to schooling one getting ready for its first Advanced (in the unlikely event that I’ll ever need that!), a bunch of new friends, and a renewed respect for the hard work and dedication it takes to be a professional in our sport. I’ve given you the highlights, but behind that was all the care that our animals need, the preparation and tacking up, the clipping, the packing and unpacking, and the sisyphean tack cleaning! I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and hope my journey inspires other professionals to offer similar scholarships and other amateurs to load up their horses and take a risk in the service of their learning.

Playing with swords and satisfying historical curiosity are certainly big draws. But re-enactors also keep coming back, despite the wet wool and lack of pants, because of the communities they form, often with people they wouldn’t otherwise meet. It’s a way to share a campfire meal with friends and try out martial arts, yes, but these re-enactors are also chasing an elusive feeling—that moment of forgetting where and when they are, of stepping outside of themselves.
