Wood Engraving Wednesday
ANDY ENGLISH
This 5.5" x 3.25" print by English wood engraver Andy English (b. 1956), entitled Nightingale Walk, is one of 60 selected for the Fifth Triennial Exhibition, 2024-2026 of the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN), the national organization for American wood engravers, juried by our head of Special Collections Max Yela. WEN accepts members from other countries, and English is also a member of WEN's long-standing British counterpart the Society of Wood Engravers.
A self-trained wood engraver, English began his practice in 1991. He is drawn to subjects of the familiar: family, gardens, local wildlife, landscapes, etc. On his website he writes:
When I was starting to make wood engravings, there was some resistance to continuing to make images of traditional, rural subjects. Somehow they were not always thought of as being progressive enough. For me, I was born in a small village in East Anglia and I engraved the landscapes and wildlife, and these remain an important focus for my printmaking.

Spearheaded by Neil Newbon, Pixel Pack are a collective of actors redefining the role of talent in the gaming business. At a time when SAG-AFTRA's "Interactive Media (Video Game) Strike" continues the fight for better workplace protections, including from A.I. replacements, the Pixel Pack seeks to remind everyone of a simple truth: The actors within the gaming sector are indeed actors, and they are pushing for recognition and respect as artists.  PHOTOGRAPHERS Lead Photographer & Editor: @ivanweiss.london

Can I request Dirk (and optionally Jake) babysitting your davekat kids? Uncles content?
Depending on the AU they behave different, haha
Tumblr media
with Helena it would be weird because 1. they never saw a baby before and 2. they never even imagined how a troll baby would be like, lol. Probably would not take care of her that much unless Dave and Karkat ran out of options. Dirkjake isnt an official thing in this AU tho, they could be seeing each other from time to time maybe?
Tumblr media
with Andy it would be the contrary. Dirk enjoys being a role model to and taking care of him even tho he would never want children of his own. Kid Andy would say stuff like "my uncle got divorced twice but still sees his boyfriend sometimes, I like Jake so thats cool!" Jake was like a ghost in his life, would come and go in a blink, but a cool ghost in the end haha. As Andy got older he stopped going on trips with Dirk as often but he searches for him if he needs it

Wood Engraving Wednesday
Here are some original prints from the Wood Engravers' Network (WEN) 25th Anniversary Portfolio of Prints (WEN Block & Burin Bundle No. 62, Autumn 2019). WEN was founded in 1994 by Ann Arbor wood engraver and letterpress printer Jim Horton to foster education and create a resource for wood engravers and the practice of wood engraving. Over the decades, WEN has expanded to become an international organization with members from around the globe. 32 wood engravers participated in this anniversary print exchange. The prints shown above are:
For 25 Years, a three-color engraving with a letterpress quotation from Emily Dickinson's poem "This My Letter to the World" by WEN founder Jim Horton, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Staying Sharp at 25, a five-color engraving by Joanne Price at her Starpoint Studio, Bagdad, Kentucky.
Extinction Afterlife-Chaos, a Corian reduction relief engraving by Abigail Rorer at her Lone Oak Press, Petersham, Massachusetts.
WEN XXV by Judith Jaidinger, Illinois.
Composition #25, endgrain maple engraving by Anders Sandstrom, Indianapolis, Indiana.
WEN25, endgrain maple engraving by Julie Kirihara, Eagan, Minnesota.
The Printer's Hands by Nancy Bittner, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Endless by William Myers at his Piano Press, St. Paul Minnesota.
Cotswold Farmhouse endgrain English boxwood engraving by Andy English at his Isle Handpress, Little Downham, Cambridgeshire, England.
Gears, homemade maple block engraving by Marc Horovitz, Colorado.
Beauty by Leslie Evans at her Sea Dog Press, Watertown, Massachusetts.
The prints below are:
Portfolio case print by Jon Hinkel at his The Tight Squeeze Press, Duluth, Minnesota.
W.E.N. 25th ("Hopeless"), a Resingraving by George Dirolf, New York.
This portfolio is a gift from our friend Tony Drehfal.

Thought I’d revisit my personal Tumblr void to talk about how much I adore Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It went from “hey that looks pretty cool” to a Top 20 game. The characters are written incredibly well and feel like real, well-rounded people with layers that don’t become obvious immediately. All brought to life by an incredible voice cast with some heavy hitters across the industry. The game isn’t afraid to get dark but also has some of the funniest exchanges between characters I can remember. I don’t even need to talk about Esquie because cmon everyone loves that guy.
Supposedly the music director was some dude on SoundCloud that the game’s director approached!? The score indubitably elevates the already great story to even more emotional heights, like with any great JRPG. Mournful pianos, riveting battle ballads and jazz?? Like this shit has everything.
But at the end of the day, this is a game, so how’s the gameplay? It takes a tried and true JRPG formula and throws in a Sekiro-like parrying mechanic that rewards precision and accuracy. It helps that countering and parrying feel AMAZING to pull off and there’s enough variation that you constantly feel like you’re learning how to get better. The build-crafting is also insane. The picto/lumina system is really innovative and allows nearly endless build-variety with little-to-no farming required. I’m not really a min/maxer but this game made it easy to dive into that sort of play style. To take down the optional super-boss, I had to make the most of the game’s systems and I was able to do it with just Verso in my party.
Speaking of that optional boss, it’s insane how much story, lore and content is hidden behind the scenes, away from the main plot. For an “indie” game I was easily able to squeeze more playtime out of this than say, Spider-Man 2. And that boss is partially why I made this post because wow. I haven’t had such a fulfilling time taking a boss down since Messer in SoTE or Erlang in Wukong. Tough as nails but ultimately surmountable. It helped that he was essentially a Dark Souls reference made manifest lmao.
All that to say, Expedition 33 is a power house and for a freshman debut, Sandfall Interactive crushed it. I’m in love with the characters, score, gameplay, all of it. Every time I become disillusioned with the gaming industry or with creating art in general, something comes along that reinvigorates me. I hope to do the same one day. Tomorrow Comes. It always will.

Andy is one of the only movie action heroes character type person whatever who can do the silly action wall run and spinny fighting moves, who I am convinced could also pull that off in real life, because she is old enough to have tried and errorred all of the stupid moves to actually make them work.
Which is also why she insists on using them. I am 6000 years old, I work stupidly hard on my stupid flair so I am going to wall run and spinny twist my way through fights. If you have to suffer immortality you might as well do it with flair

Andrew learning what a Byronic hero was while taking lit classes and being like “lol that’s me”
Ironically Lord Byron also fucked his sister so that’s also a fun fact.
