Writing Angsty Scenes Without Making Them Cringe

Alright, so we all love a good angsty moment, right? That scene where everything feels like it's falling apart, emotions are running high, and your character's world is just burning around them. But… writing those scenes without slipping into "oh no, not this again" territory? Yeah, it can be tricky.

Angst is powerful, no doubt, but it can get cringey fast if you’re not careful. So, how do you make your readers feel the hurt without rolling their eyes at the drama? Here are some thoughts (because we’ve all been there)

1. Keep It Real No one—and I mean no one—has perfectly poetic, life-altering thoughts while they’re in the middle of an emotional meltdown. If your character’s going through it, make sure their reactions feel raw, maybe even messy. Show us their confusion, anger, and fear in a way that makes sense for them. Don’t just throw in a monologue about the meaning of life or have them collapse in a rainstorm. (Unless it’s really necessary. Then, okay, fine, but be careful!)

2. The Little Details Hit Harder Sometimes, it’s the small, unexpected details that pack the biggest punch. Instead of a dramatic sobbing fit, maybe your character’s hands shake as they try to make a cup of tea or they notice a tiny crack in the wall that they never noticed before because they’re spiraling. It’s those little, relatable moments that make the angst feel real, not overdone.

3. Embrace the Quiet Moments It doesn’t always have to be yelling or crying to show that your character is struggling. Silence can be loud. Sometimes it’s the things unsaid that carry the most weight. Maybe your character withdraws, or they’re stuck staring at the ceiling for hours. A pause in the conversation, a long sigh, or a blank stare can be just as gut-wrenching as full-on breakdowns.

4. Avoid the Obvious Clichés (If You Can) Okay, this one’s a bit tricky. It’s not that you can’t ever have rain scenes or broken mirrors (I see you, “symbolism”), but if you’re gonna go there, give it a twist. Maybe instead of staring out a window during a storm, they’re in a brightly lit, overly cheerful room that just doesn’t match how they’re feeling. Play with contrasts. Make the environment work against their mood rather than mirroring it perfectly.

5. Let the Angst Breathe Don’t feel like you need to dump all the angst in one scene. Let it stretch out a bit. Give your characters space to process (or fail to process) over time. A lot of times, readers will feel more for a character who’s quietly unraveling over several chapters than one who explodes all at once. It makes the eventual breakdown hit harder when it does happen.

6. People Are Weird When They’re Hurting They joke at the wrong times. They say things they don’t mean. They shut people out, or they get way too clingy. Don’t be afraid to make your characters react in unexpected or contradictory ways—people do that when they’re feeling too much. Let your characters be complicated, because real people are.

7. Subtle Can Be Stronger Not every angsty scene needs a screaming match or someone running away dramatically. Sometimes, a single line of dialogue or a character’s slight change in expression can hit like a freight train. Try letting things simmer. Hold back when it feels like you should go big, and you might surprise yourself (and your readers) with how much more intense it feels.

I'm an unapologetic lover of gay drama, with a knack for twisting plotlines into something that's equal parts tragic and captivating. Life with ADHD and autism definitely influences my writing style—sometimes it’s a little chaotic, but I think that’s what gives my characters and worlds a unique pulse. Seriously, I can waste hours scrolling through cat memes, and honestly, who wouldn’t? Animals in general make my day, and they’re the perfect reminder of the simple joys in life.

I may not be able to draw (trust me, you don't want to see my attempts), but I make up for it with my extensive use of Picrew to bring my characters to life. Art is about expression, right? And if I’m being honest, I’d rather spend time creating worlds with words than anything else.

Dystopian AU I

The Clinic 

Summary: Over the past few decades, mental illnesses have skyrocketed in teenagers, leading to a national epidemic and panic. Consequences became deadly as more and more teens are overdosing on pills and committing suicide. It reached its peak in 2XXX when 1 out of every 5 teenagers had a severe mental illness and seemed to have a 60% survival rate. Surprisingly, this epidemic seemed to only affect teenagers (minors within the age frame of 13-18) as adult mental illness and suicide rates remained normal. As the federal government raced to find the cause for this sudden spike, it implemented a temporary program to “fix” students who showed signs of mental illness: The Clinic. Within a small suburban town, a group of students known as The Resistance struggle through their final years of high school, trying to avoid the “Healers” and remaining as normal as possible. But it’s starting to get harder and harder to hide their problems, and soon enough, the Healers will come.

After all, it was easier to survive as a group…  

And even easier to die as one. 

These AUs that I’ve created are all based around my real life group of friends. I actually thought of these a few months prior and now putting them on here cuz...why not? Unlikely I will start this AU in the near future. I much prefer responding to writing prompts haha.

What got you into writing Fanfiction?

The Last Jedi got me into Reylo, then I ‘accidentally’ read a Reylo fanfic, The Dark Moon Rises series by AnyaVoss (no really, it was an accidental click on a link and before I’d finished the first chapter I was hooked and was like, well I guess this is my life now lol). I hadn’t read fanfic in years. Eventually I got hooked on diasterisms’ Sword of the Jedi series and I just couldn’t resist the itch to write anymore! I’ve also beta’d a lot which really helped my writing skills grow, and now I sort of feel like I’m ready to give back to this fandom that has meant so much to me. I’ve written novels and short stories before, but never fanfic, and honestly I find the research aspect for writing SW to be one of the most appealing things. I think the vastness of the world to play in was a huge aspect that drew me into wanting to write within the SW universe.

What are you most proud of in your Fanfiction?

The fact I’m writing again lol. Also my extensive research and blending of old and new canon, and the fact I came up with an ending for once!

What fic that you’ve written are you most proud of?

This one! I’ve started others that I will hopefully post on ao3 one day, but this story is my real baby that I’ve had in my head for two years, and is the story I’m most passionate about.

Rey shrieked, trying to twist out of his grasp, pulling at the cruel bonds. But her struggles did nothing to stop the needle from digging into her flesh. The medic’s thumb pressed down on the plunger, and soon her eyesight began to blur, muscles falling lax, and she collapsed back against the stretcher, unable to fight against whatever drug had been injected into her.

After the fight on the now destroyed Starkiller Base, First Order forces have captured Rey. The call to the Light and her friend’s at the Resistance is strong...but will the seductive darkness of Kylo Ren and his fabled Knights be stronger?

Same fam. I hope at least some of you will stay with me and keep the ball rolling. This is definitely the most fun I've ever had in a fandom. Honestly its been life changing. I've met so many amazing people, a few of whom like @a-nerd-obsessed who have come to be real friends. I started writing again. I started reading fic and real books again (shocker! But now like all my non-existent spare money goes to sw books and comics lol) And I'm even going to finally post my first fic, Out to the Last Night, December first (find me on ao3 @AngstyWriter!). Its been a tough couple of years for me, but this fandom has gotten me through some truly dark times

I have this feeling there will be a “Post-TROS” depression. 

The SKywalker saga will be over, we won’t have anymore Star Wars movies coming out for ages, the series are cool at least, I will miss my favs, no more dramatic skywalker shit :( …. I truly cherish those last weeks we have because it has been the most fun I’ve ever had in a fandom.
