Hey y’all, here is another test animation I did in my spare time but I experimented with a more choppy style where I animated 12 frames per second, kinda like Spider-Verse, Mutant Mayhem and The Last Wish.
Also, I was thinking of this earlier on throughout the process of “The Wishing Kingdom” rewrite, my idea is that I could animate some musical numbers and some of the scenes as well but the majority of the project will be half animated and half animatic, so yeah, pretty much those ideas won’t change anytime soon, so some advice would be really nice for both my animation and my rewrite!

"A little boy struggling to fit in with the crowd of strange creatures that inhabit the mystical jungle he calls home, meets another just like him, who encourages him to shed his disguise and have some fun. But soon he faces the choice between expressing himself authentically, or going back to a life of conforming to expectations."
Trying to put some more of my art up here as, so here are some early Concept art for a short film I'm working on for my storyboarding class

Why Storytelling Is the Secret Weapon Behind Powerful Animation

Animation isn’t just about movement—it’s about meaning. Whether it’s a 30-second commercial or a full-length feature film, storytelling is what gives animation its heart. Behind every expressive frame lies a story that makes us feel, remember, and connect. Today, in an age where visual content dominates screens and attention spans are short, animation must go beyond eye-catching visuals. It must speak to its audience. And storytelling is how that happens.
The Emotional Core of Animation
At its core, storytelling brings life and relatability to animated characters and worlds. Audiences may initially be drawn in by impressive visuals or unique character designs, but what keeps them emotionally invested is a compelling narrative. Think of timeless characters like Simba in The Lion King, or Carl and Ellie’s story in Up. Their journeys resonate because of the emotional depth that storytelling provides.
Without a solid narrative, even the most advanced animation techniques fall flat. It’s not enough to animate a beautifully-rendered dragon unless the dragon has a purpose—maybe it's on a journey to find its lost family or struggling with its identity. A good story makes audiences care about that journey.
Storytelling as a Structural Blueprint
In the animation pipeline, storytelling serves as the blueprint for every department—concept art, character design, rigging, lighting, and more. It begins with a script, then evolves through storyboarding, animatics, and finally, full animation. Each of these steps refines how the story will be told visually.
Storyboards, in particular, are powerful tools for visual storytelling. They help directors and animators map out emotional beats, comedic timing, and action sequences before production ramps up. This is where pacing, tone, and perspective are fine-tuned.
Even in 3D animation, where technical execution is a major challenge, the story remains king. Many industry veterans often emphasize, “If it doesn’t work in storyboard, it won’t work in 3D.” Storytelling sets the stage, and technology is simply a means to bring it to life.
Modern Audiences, Modern Stories
Audiences today demand more than generic fairy tales. With the growth of platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Crunchyroll, we’re seeing animated stories that are more inclusive, diverse, and bold. Series like Arcane, Blue Eye Samurai, and The Mitchells vs. The Machines push traditional narrative boundaries while still remaining emotionally compelling.
What’s notable is how storytelling has adapted to modern social realities. Turning Red, for example, blended cultural identity, adolescence, and mother-daughter dynamics into a narrative that felt both personal and universally relatable. This shift shows us how storytelling in animation has become a means of cultural commentary and connection.
How Storytelling Powers Different Animation Styles
Whether it’s 2D hand-drawn, stop-motion, or 3D, the storytelling approach may differ in execution but not in importance.
2D Animation: Often used for stylized storytelling, like in anime or indie films. The flexibility of this medium allows for abstract and metaphorical expression. Take Your Name or Persepolis—stories that use visual metaphors to convey emotions and memory.
Stop-Motion: Think of Coraline or Isle of Dogs. These use tactile materials to craft quirky, unique visual languages—but again, it’s the layered storytelling that gives them staying power.
3D Animation: With the rise of high-end rendering engines and real-time tools like Unreal Engine, 3D has evolved to rival live-action cinema. However, all that power still relies on story to make the audience feel. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was visually spectacular, but what set it apart was the surprisingly heartfelt story of mortality and friendship.
In all these formats, storytelling defines the why, while animation defines the how.
Trends Driving Storytelling in Animation Today
Animation studios are now emphasizing writing as much as visuals. Many animators are learning screenwriting, and writers are collaborating closely with concept artists. The wall between “writer” and “animator” is thinner than ever.
What’s also changing is the source of stories. Studios are seeking out creators from underrepresented regions and communities, leading to fresh, untold stories. The Oscar-winning short The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is an example of how heartfelt simplicity, when paired with emotional resonance, can outperform flashy spectacle.
There’s also a growing trend of adapting graphic novels and games into animated series—like Castlevania or Cyberpunk: Edgerunners—proving how narrative-rich source material translates beautifully into animation.
Recent Industry Buzz: Storytelling Over Visuals
In 2025, several animation festivals and industry panels have emphasized the prioritization of storytelling. The Annecy International Animation Festival, for instance, saw strong recognition for small-budget films that focused deeply on narrative clarity and emotional depth. One panel, “Narrative First: Rethinking Animation Pipelines,” highlighted how more studios are restructuring their production timelines to prioritize story development before moving into design or animation phases.
This industry-wide shift is not just artistic but also commercial. Streaming platforms report higher viewer retention for animated series with complex characters and evolving story arcs. It's not the number of frames per second, but the emotional journey that keeps viewers binge-watching.
The Role of Education in Strengthening Storytelling
As the animation industry evolves, so does the need for animators who understand narrative structure. More educational programs are now incorporating storytelling workshops, writing labs, and collaborative exercises into their curricula. Technical mastery is essential, but without the ability to tell a story, even the best 3D model remains lifeless.
In regions where animation is booming, like Bengaluru, educational institutes have started offering immersive learning modules that combine design fundamentals with storytelling expertise. Students are not just trained to create visual effects but also taught how to craft characters, build conflict, and drive narratives forward.
One such example is an Animation course in Bengaluru, which now includes real-world storytelling projects where students team up with writers, composers, and voice artists to simulate studio-like collaboration. These interdisciplinary exercises are crucial for preparing the next generation of animators to be full-spectrum storytellers.
Conclusion: Where Animation Is Headed
As we move further into a digital-first world, where virtual experiences, immersive content, and interactive media dominate, the importance of storytelling will only grow. From AR filters to cinematic universes, the core still lies in stories that make us care.
Bengaluru, in particular, has seen a rise in storytelling-centric animation hubs. Studios and training institutes alike are focusing on developing talent that understands both sides of the craft—technology and narrative. This is evident in the increasing demand for professionals graduating from a quality 3D animation course bengaluru, where students aren’t just taught to animate—they’re taught to tell stories that last.

Hey guys, so here’s an animated project I did over the last week during college, its premise is pretty simple, it’s an advert I had to make to promote Earth to aliens, but Im very happy about how it turned out to look in terms of art style and the execution, and hopefully this could lead up to me uploading the chapters of The Wishing Kingdom in animatic form soon, starting from chapter 2, so stick around for that!
