What's up?

元気? It's your soon-to-be Pokéathlon Medalist Extraordinaire, Haruto (that's 陽翔, for you kanji fanatics)! Out on the field, they also call me Helios, the shining sun. Choose as you wish! I'm 23, and I go by he/him!
Tumblr media
This soaring star's origin story all begins in Johto's Goldenrod City! I stuck around the home rather than journeying to take care of my old man after he got injured at sea, but I spent a buncha time in the National Park, running circles around those local Beedrill!
Since then, my accomplishments include serving as a Gym Trainer for Gym Leader Bugsy, studying Sports Psychology at Naranja-Uva Academy all the way out in Paldea, and now starting my journey as a Pokéathlete!
Tumblr media
My main team is full of little guys I've met full of fightin' spirit: Sunny, the Sunkern who's gonna go all the way, Peepy, my hardboiled little Togepi, and Ommy, my cool, calm, and collected Meditite!
I've also got my old gym team with me: Slicey-Dicey, who's really sweet once you get past the scissor hands, Pewwy, who's a bit explosive, and Stabby, who's got, like... zero chill. She's hella fast though!
Looking forward to seeing you all on the training field! Later, rivals! (OOC below cut.)
General warning for unreality of the Pokémon variety!
Hello, it's Ace of @aceoflilies (she/he) out here with yet another Pokéblog! Both mod (21) and muse are adult, if uncomfortable with that feel free to block!
I decided to make Haruto since I realized there's not much coverage of Pokéathlons here, and I recently spent several months in the Kansai region of Japan, where Johto is based off of! As such, Haruto will sometimes use "Kantonian" (Japanese). I'll put translations in the tags. (I should mention, I am NOT Japanese myself. Let me know if I absolutely mess something up, I'll fix it.)
Haruto is mostly going to be low-stakes, but has some (moderate) darker aspects to his background that might be explored in mini-arcs. Any specifics would be warned and tagged, of course! (I'm also open to involving him in medium-to-high-stakes Johto events!)
He's also more than a bit of a flirt. I won't direct that on other blogs that aren't my own without asking first though! And though I'll generally avoid explicit content, if something is suggestive it'll be tagged as such (#suggestive).
Anyways, that aside, I use the usual tags: #pkmn irl and #pokeblogging. Asks will be tagged as #haruto answers. OOC notes will be tagged as #//(content).
Hope you enjoy him!

(originally I said all of this in a reblog because I'm a dumbass and didn't read the "ask game" tag but)
I haven't gotten to explore in a long while. Leaving Orre doesn't tend to be something. Very easy to do for me money wise, but I've got a solid sum of travel money squoveted away, so go wild with the travel suggestions. I know I've already taken one or two trips to Hoenn (and have gotten utterly lost). That's the only place I'd prefer not going to I think. I'd be claimed by the wilderness if I didn't have someone to hold my hand like a toddler.
Anyways. My partner pokemon - Cham Chams - He's been by my side since I was a baby and he was a meditite. He's an old boy by now but he's still Uber active. A real go getter. He can handle the hot weather here in Orre but I'm sure a vacation to a much milder climate would be a nice treat for both of us. Any nice hiking trails with good views would be great for him to meditate. Gets his aura flowing or whatever. Are medicham attuned to aura like Lucario? I dunno. Regardless, would love to know of places in or out of nature that would be a good spot to take this sweet ol' grampa. Would love it if I could get him some kind of special gift while I'm at it. He's gonna be somewhere in his 50's this year I believe. A real special occasion. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the essay lmao.
- @skrub-dubs
Ohhh, what a rich history you two have.
There are a few options I can recommend for you both, but how about some quick facts?
Medicham are somewhat in tune to aura, but they can't quite manipulate it like Lucario. In return, they are much more mentally fortified.
They are capable of heavy meditation for days, and it's said if you train and meditate with one regularly, not only can ot help with your own mental and physical health, but you might be able to read each other's mind (in a sense).
Right now, it's pretty warm most places, but when it gets cooler, a few places you might want to consider taking him is:
Galar, specifically the Isle of Armor as there are many fighting type Dojos and a much more tranquil setting for training and becoming closer for you and your pokemon, an older physical pokemon would enjoy the atmosphere and meeting of physical and mental skills.
Alola in the fall is nice as the heat is still present, but there's a lot more cooling air to make it much more relaxing.
The soft sands feel great on older feet and joints, and he will probably enjoy the relaxing sounds of the waves, giving him a new taste of meditation.
Finally, I'll always sing praises of the calming presence of Sinnoh and the lovely aroma of Floroma Town, some great aroma therapy to help you both relax.
I hope this helps you all, and please feel free to ask if you need more details!

For Nintendo purposes I'm now a resident of portland, oregon.
When I got my switch (last year, as a gift) and I tried to open the eshop, I found out just to open the fucking shop you need to be from a handful of select, privileged countries. So I went into my Nintendo account and changed my location to the US.
Recently I got myself a dollar card. In my country, it's almost (practically) impossible to send any amount of money outside the country. So no online international purchases at all. Unless you go through a third party to buy gift cards. But some time ago, the government + nepal rastra bank started issuing prepaid dollar cards, with a limit of $500.
I'd been thinking of getting one since the cards became available but hadn't because a. having to go the bank, and b. I'd, for some reason, with no proof, thought one needed to load all five hundred dollars at once, and that's a lot of money. And then I saw a post on r/nepal that said patreon doesn't take prepaid cards. And that made me even more hesitant about getting a dollar card.
But now that I have some money, I said fuck it and went to the bank. Didn't take more than 20 minutes and turns out you can load a little at a time ($10 one-time activation charge, $2 charge per load) upto 500 a year. But I was still apprehensive about using it.
Last night I plucked up the courage and got the 7 day free trial for the Nintendo switch online membership (can't believe you need payment details to get a FREE trial). (But more importantly, WHY THE FUCKING FUCK DO WE HAVE TO PAY TO GO ONLINE WHEN WE COULD DO THAT FOR FREE ON THE 3DS AND THE CONSOLES THAT CAME BEFORE.)
It asked for my location, and again I set it to USA. It asked me for my zipcode, which will be needed to calculate sales tax. So I look up the states with the lowest sales tax and it turns out Alaska and oregon don't have that. At first I thought of going with anchorage bc I'm cool like that but then I stopped and thought wouldn't a bigger city like portland get more offers? As if I was going to go to a physical store there myself? What? So anyway i entered the first zipcode I saw of portland and everything went well and now I have a free trial that expires in 6 days and apparently auto renews to the monthly subscription.
The first thing I did after being able to go online was connect to pokemon go (that was a whole ordeal and half). The second thing I did was do a surprise trade (got a gible for a meditite). And then I joined a tera raid, for a hoothoot. And idk what the shiny chances are for these tera raids but
Tumblr media
I got a shiny rock tera hoothoot woooo

Just a quick  ☯ test so I can get back into the groove of writing my boi Andrew again
It's been weeks since Andrew's big incident. He hasn't been contacted or in touch with anyone during all that time, mostly spent reminiscing and thinking about how things could've been. How they would've been better. Enter a big kangaroo and his small bilby pal, both of whom have caught Andrew's attention.
Tumblr media
He briefly reconsidered not saying anything, yet he persevered anyway. This may be the only chance he'd get to engage in conversation with anyone besides himself for months! "Are you the only ones?" He asked the two quickly. Andrew worried that behind them there might've been an angry crowd ready to tear him apart. The bilby and the kangaroo stared at the toad confused.
Tumblr media
"Who know?" He elaborated. The two still looked on, lost in the context.
Tumblr media
"...That I'm here?" He now whispered. Again, the fear of being theoretically torn to shreds haunted his conscience. He didn't want anyone else to hear his location, should they perhaps be ready to rip him apart again. The bilby finally answered. "I think so, but I don't..."
Tumblr media
"Phew! Last thing I need is to be mobbed while I'm still moist, from my douched-on upper scene."[citation needed] Andrew was relieved. He had a lot of weight on his shoulders upon these two stumbling across him, and he relaxed his muscles once he found out he was safe... for now. "You're...?" The bilby was about to ask the toad who he was, but he began to ramble before Perry could get any more words out.
Tumblr media
"Although to be honest, it's quite nice bumping into you." Andrew paced about the two as he explained his situation. The bilby and kangaroo were finally about to be introduced to his character, and for once in a long while, Andrew embraced their soon-to-be-found knowledge.
Tumblr media
"I value the privacy, I really do. I needed a bit of me time... Y'know, a little medititive solitude, but it's just so boring, y'know? Sorry..."
Tumblr media
(at least for now)
Andrew spoke and gloated for a solid minute before the kangaroo started doubting Andrew's sanity. "Okay... Uh, Perry, should we get moving?" Red whispered to Perry's ear. Still the toad continued to monologue, even breaking the two's space together to regain his attention.
Tumblr media
"Can you imagine what it's like, looking like this?" He looked over towards Red's direction, mildly distraught. "Aww, of course you can't. Look at your thin lips!" He pressed his gleaming finger onto the kangaroo's mouth, before backing up to nonchalantly compliment his bilby companion.
Tumblr media
"Y'know in a way, I envy him, his cloddish visage... If I looked less amazing, maybe it wouldn't have happened!" Andrew let his shoulder go of Perry as he slowly began to slightly break down, over the unspoken events of his past. "What wouldn't?" Perry asked Andrew.
Tumblr media
He was suddenly back to being shy and hesitant, and began to stumble on, and think carefully about, his own words. "The tragic thing... that... happened." Perry was puzzled still, at what must've happened to Andrew. The bilby softly spoke a simple "What?"
Tumblr media
"Would you mind if we stopped talking about it?" The cane toad suddenly raised his voice. His mindset immediately switched to being a drama queen in just mere milliseconds. Red began to hop away from the toad. "Great idea." He sarcastically said as he grabbed Perry. Andrew instantly saw the kangaroo's efforts to carry the bilby onward to his own path, and quickly grabbed the bilby by his arm back, before looking back again.
Tumblr media
"It's very painful!" Andrew attempted to bait the two into hearing his story through and through, but the kangaroo was having none of it. "Okay handsome, thanks for sharing. Let's go." Red said whilst winking at Perry, signaling the bilby to follow in his footsteps. "I'm sorry, we have to leave." The bilby quietly adjourned to Andrew, as he slowly started backing up towards the direction Red was heading.
Tumblr media
"Oh yeah, no worries, yeah sure. See ya." Andrew quickly replied back. He tried to act like their departure was nothing more than a tasteless fly, but deep down he knew that it meant the world to him, being able to speak to someone whom hasn't had a negative bias towards him in such a long time. He thought it over and decided... Where those two were heading, perhaps Andrew should tag along with?

Chapter 30- Part 4
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, there's that done, and now here's Shieldon’s Dex entry:
Tumblr media
Now, the second to last encounter is…well, this I'm a bit miffed by. Remember two chapters ago, all those book excerpts? Well, there was one (1) last excerpt that I skipped because I didn't want to add more screenshots, I just didn't feel like it.
But it turns out!! You need to hear all four readings to get this next Pokémon!! SO HERE I GO-
Tumblr media
Alright, last book, let's see what this is about finally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y…Yes, yes book, I know how energy transfer works, I took chemistry classes, I have a degree in the field-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, based on the laws of physics, the energy produced by the act of punching still gets transferred out of your fist. Some of it goes into the surrounding environment as heat or sound, but most of it gets absorbed back into your body, which can actually be kinda detrimental to your joints and muscles if not done in a safe-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also call that Newton's Third Law-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, literally just chemistry, you can spin it in a spiritual way all you want, but I know what you really are!!
Anyways, now that Xera's gotten enlightenment from all four books, it's time to go back to…her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, so I was right to guess she was important for some side quest, I was just wrong about what the side quest was.
But regardless! Meditite, that's cool! I named mine Asano (derived from Meditite’s Japanese name, which likely comes from the word asana), even though I forgot to screenshot it. Luckily, I remembered to grab the PokéDex entry:
Tumblr media
Now, the final encounter is…not a static encounter, actually. It's a normal Pokémon found in the wild, but it's one that I just straight-up think would be a good fit for my Kiki team. And that Pokémon is…
Tumblr media
A Sandygast! I noticed you could encounter them on Apophyll Beach, and- well, there's more to it than that, but I'll get to it in a bit. For now, let's just catch this-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Forgot to screenshot it again, but I named her Suna, which is the Japanese word for “sand” (砂).
Now, before I start theorycrafting, I noticed Asano knows Hidden Power, so just out of curiosity for what type his is-
Tumblr media
Fascinating! Okay, onto proper teambuilding now…
So, I said I really wanted a Sandygast (soon to be Palossand), right? Well, there are three reasons for that. For one, she's part Ghost-type, so she's immune to Fighting-type moves outright. Second, her Ability:
Tumblr media
On Ashen Beach, Sand Veil is activated immediately, so that should help her dodge other types of attacks.
Also, can I just- can I just talk about something that’s REALLY bothering me?
So, while I was looking for a Sandygast with Sand Veil (see, if I ran into a Sandygast, I would use Lake to hit it with a Water attack, and if its Defense and Sp. Defense got raised, I’d know it had Water Compaction, so I would run from that encounter and try again), I actually encountered a Shiny Sandygast. I didn’t catch it, didn’t have the Ability I wanted, but it did allow me to see that Pokémon Reborn also changed Sandygast’s Shiny, to this:
Tumblr media
Which, in my opinion, is objectively worse than Sandygast’s actual Shiny. Sandygast’s canon Shiny is based on the phenomena of black sand, which is common on beaches near volcanoes, due to having basalt mixed in with the sand. So that’s a cool thing to base a Shiny on, and a logical decision for a Pokémon literally made of sand, not to mention the black coloring could arguably be seen as befitting Sandygast’s Ghost typing.
So what the heck is this? Slightly pale blue sand?? What?? Heck, if anything, I’d say black sand Sandygast is more fitting for the environment of the Rebon region and Apophyll Beach, because that beach is literally next to a volcano!! Where black sand beaches can happen in real life??
I don’t know why this is making me so mad, it’s just one (1) Shiny change, I’m certain no one else who’s played this game cares about this, definitely not to the extent that I do, but I just- gosh!!

Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Hold B to speed up dialogue!
(The white text did NOT show up well here, so take my shitty edit.)
Now this is going to be a long post because there’s a LOT of new characters and oddities for me to share. You better set aside some time for this one.
(Because of this, from now on I will no longer be taking strictly plot-related pictures. We all know how the game goes anyway.)
PART TWO IS HERE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
😱 I can only imagine! Who knows what kind of crazy characters are out there? Plusle running wild... Budew gangs... Snubbull thieves?!
Tropius gives the order for Beedrill to show us around...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tom Sawyer Beedrill... I love it.
So we start the tour. It’s about as boring as you remember, except:
Tumblr media
The WHERE?! Does Guildmaster Totodile keep rubber bands in here or something?
I’m a HUGE fan of the replacement title for Treasure Town though
Tumblr media
Nautical Cottage. It’s by the sea, bitches.
Although weirdly, Andrea clips back into the prime universe for a second:
Tumblr media
🤷‍♀️ Yeah idk. Not even the weirdest thing that happened today.
Introducing the Treasure Town Nautical Cottage cast! Starring:
Tumblr media
Tyrogue Bank!
Tumblr media
Gulpin Link Shop! Hey this isn’t Pokémon Square!
Tumblr media
FISH STORE FISH STORE COME GET YA GOODS AT THE FISH STORE!!
Tumblr media
And Blastoise Storage!
Tumblr media
(I’m never gonna stop gushing over Southern Beedrill. Just FYI.)
Tumblr media
I like to imagine the scales above his eyes popping up every time he says “Hey hey hey!”
Tumblr media
Chic girl Psyduck! Personal headcanon: she says “Oh my gosh!” every time her headache gets bad :(
Just for funsies, I decided to check out who runs the Dojo
Tumblr media
Dang, one more evolution and this would’ve been perfect 😔
I’m not sure if anyone else cares about the various Treasure Town Exploration Teams, but I do! So we’re taking an inventory. Sorry, not sorry.
Tumblr media
Believe it or not, I pretty much remember who is who based on the dialogue. (Look, it was bound to happen after playing through this game literally a dozen times as a kid.) Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Sunkern is Pidgey and Magmar is Seedot!
Tumblr media
For Team Tasty, we have Natu as Swellow and Wailmer as Wurmple. Which makes this extra hilarious:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imagining a bird the size of an orb swallowing a beach ball sized whale whole... I’m not an artist, someone please draw this.
Tumblr media
Socially friendly Toxicroak as Vigorith
Tumblr media
For Team Ebony, we have Meditite as Murkrow and Rhyhorn as Shuppet.
I go to drop my stuff off at Blastoise Storage and...
Tumblr media
Yeah. Here we see the real consequence of my needing to toggle the NPC portraits option. Unfortunate, but necessary. (Does that mean all the vendors are... imposters?!)
Tumblr media
This is this first ever inventory from the Finneon Market! Does anyone know where you normally pick up the Miracle Chest? Because I’ve never seen it before. (Granted, I never did the harder dungeons like Zero Isle.) I ultimately bought the pure seed and heal seed.
And then we trigger the arrival of the adorable brothers! I can’t wait to see who they are...
Tumblr media
Oh okay! I could see it! Uh, maybe not them being brothers, but I can easily tell which one is Marill and which one is Azu-
Tumblr media
...Just kidding. That is objectively hilarious omfg
Tumblr media
But then suddenly... ambiguous prophecy time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andrea: “Lol bet”
Finally, I get to check what the other Finneon is selling and UHHHHHH-
Tumblr media
ONE OF THE SEVEN TREASURES,
AND A LEGENDARY ITEM.
I checked the description just out of curiosity and-
Tumblr media
Onix Village?! 😂 I cannot wait for post game.
The team stumbles upon the kiddos, striking up a conversation with a good samaritan who promises to help find their lost item! And who is this shady benevolent character?!
Tumblr media
Oh. Oh this is beautiful. With Blizzard, the boss fight is gonna be a cinch!
Tumblr media
Uh, I mean-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah. Sure. Let’s go with nice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An entire line for a measly ‘t. Nice.
So here’s something neat! I found three Pokémon at the Crossroads that let you view the randomizer settings, the program credits, and the art credits!  I’m not sure if these Pokémon are set or if they were also randomized, but it’s a neat feature nonetheless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s my seed again, but remember you can always find it in my profile description and my pinned post.
Tumblr media
A quick look at Team Glee before we kickstart the mission. We have Geodude as Togepi, Nuzleaf as Ledyba(?), and Carvanha as Politoed(?).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andrea? That’s not a Sandshrew 🤨
(On a more serious note, it totally makes sense the in-game art would be untouched. That would be way too hard to mess with.)
Tumblr media
Ack! Not Meganiu!
Tumblr media
We find out our Mt. Bristle equivalent is Everlasting Bolt-hole. (Maybe this chapter should be “The One with the Large Hole.”) The first floor had the most incredible soundtrack btw.
Tumblr media
The first Kecleon Shop! (This is yet another item I’ve never seen before?) The white text in the bottom right corner doesn’t show up as well as it did originally so: the gold box in the center is Lost Loot. Priced at 9999!
Tumblr media
This is what I mean about the vast majority of items being sticky in a dungeon. This will kill me someday, I guarantee it.
Tumblr media
Upon reaching Level 12, Andrea tried to learn Nightmare. Without any sleep inducing moves, it’s pretty much pointless. I declined the move.
Tumblr media
Wacky floor arrangement aside, here’s an interesting item I didn’t even know had art for it: the raffle tickets from Spinda’s Cafe! (You may need to zoom in to see it.)
On reaching 8F...
Tumblr media
Thaaaat’s right, another mandatory Monster House.
Alas, this time we weren’t so lucky.
Tumblr media
I took the L. It only seemed fair.
So, for the first time ever, I returned to the Guild after failing a mission. And I discovered loads of new dialogue along the way.
Tumblr media
(Do NOT make a NSFW joke out of this, I SWEAR TO GOD-)
Tumblr media
I don’t know why the game makes the day turn over before you can try again. In-world, it just doesn’t make any sense. Gee, I guess I should be glad Sandshrew has the civility to put his petty scheme on hold and wait for us.
This was probably the worst of it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A legendary talking down to me after I got ambushed by a Monster House.
Tumblr media
Et tu, Pineco?
(I’ve nearly hit the image limit for desktop so find the rest of Chapter 3 here!)

18 Nobles AU (Part 1)
(Why do I do this to myself)
This was partially born out of my other AUs, partially out of some of my disappointments with Gen 8.
Basically, this is an AU where instead of 10 nobles, divided between two clans and five areas, there are 18 nobles divided across three clans and six areas. This is probably going to need multiple posts, so I'll stick with new Pokémon and new Nobles for now. Even so, it's gonna be long so I'll stick it undrr the Read More.
New Pokémon!
Every Pokémon from Gen V onwards that were not in SwSh are present in the 18 Nobles AU (Don't ask how.)
Every Pokémon in the Platinum Sinnoh Dex that were excluded from Hisui in canon are retained here.
Since the Gen V starters are covered by the "Gen V onwards but not in SwSh" but the Gen II and VII starters aren't, those starters are added in anyway to prevent Gen V getting more attention than the other generations the Hisui starters originate from. However, Gen II, V, VI, and VII starters cannot be found until the post game.
Lastly, a few other Pokémon are included due to connection with the new Nobles.
New Nobles:
Lady Akaryu (Platinum Clan, Obsidian Fieldlands). Originating from my Akaryu AU, this is the only noble to be entirely original to Hisui, neither evolving from nor being a regional variant of an existing Pokémon. She takes a role similar to Lilligant or Avalugg, being the protector of the Platinum Clan settlement. She is Dragon-Fairy type, and carries the Pixie Plate.
Lady Swanna (Platinum Clan, Crimson Mirelands) Look, I know that Swan Boats are not in any way related to Hokkaido, but I was struggling okay? Lady Swanna is the first Platinum Clan noble you face. She is Steel-Water type, and gives you the Iron Plate.
Lady Paracide (Platinum Clan, Jade Flatlands) Originating from my Paras Whisperer AU, Lady Paracide serves as the Ride Pokémon for the new Jade Flatlands (which I will cover in a later post). She can stretch upwards to help you ford treacherous material or spring upwards to give you a burst of elevation. She is Bug-Ghost type and gives you the Spooky Plate.
Lord (Zangoose Evo) (Diamond Clan, Jade Flatlands) Look, I'm not great with Pokémon names, okay? This lord, along with Hisuian Zangoose, is Normal-Ice type and gives you the Blank Plate. Of course, he is closely tied to...
Lady (Seviper Evo) (Pearl Clan, Jade Flatlands) What else? Seviper have been chased off from the Hisuian mainland until recently. Despite making a comeback, they seem to be much less at odds with Hisuian Zangoose. This Lady is found near what will one day become Iron Island. She is Dragon-Water type, while Hisuian Seviper are pure Dragon type, and she gives you the Draco Plate.
Lady (Medicham Evolution) (Platinum Clan, Cobalt Coastlands) This evolution line is entirely based on the Dragon Warrior trope in many martial arts films, taking such a concept much more literally. This Lady resides inland, in a small cove in the northwest corner of the map. (By the way the maps are bigger.) She, along with Hisuian Meditite and Medicham, are Fighting-Dragon type, and she gives you the Fist Plate.
Lady Galvantula (Platinum Clan, Coronet Highlands) Loosely originating from my post about Emmet introducing Joltik to Hisui and them becoming an invasive species, Lady Galvantula is a regional variant of Galvantula that has adapted to an environment with low amounts of natural electricity. She is Bug-Fairy type and gives you the Insect Plate (Kleavor gives you the Stone Plate instead).
Lady (Noctowl Evolution) (Platinum Clan, Alabaster Icelands) This is the only new noble who outright replaces an existing Ride Noble, namely Braviary. She is Dark-Flying type and gives you the Dread Plate.

Absolutely Disastrous Ch 16
Ch 16: Rematch on the Beach! Kirlia Makes His Decision!
“Daylight! I missed you so much! And you too, beach! And I missed you, promotional poster of Stumbleberry Swoobat!” Zack hollered the moment he was free of the oppressive darkness that permeated Granite Cave.
Orton had declined their offer to use Aron’s tunnel to escape Granite Cave. He wanted to study the painting further, and he had to rely on hand-written notes because flash photography would’ve ruined the quality.
Aron and Kirlia had taken to ignoring each other. Kirlia still wasn’t happy about being captured, but Aron had taken to Melissa like a Magikarp to water.
Diogee did his best to prove that Milo was trustworthy, mostly by acting cute enough to get a snack, but Kirlia wasn’t having any of it.
“Kirlia, would it be alright if I used you in a practice match against Zack?” Milo asked. “He needs to train his Pokémon for his next Contest.”
Kirlia glanced over to Zack, who was now instructing Whismur to create several orange rings of increasing size with Echoed Voice. Since the move increased in power with repeated use, Zack was hoping to use that to his advantage in an appeal.
“To be honest, I’d like to use you in my gym battle,” Milo admitted. “If that’s alright with you. I think it’s really sweet that you want to make sure Aron’s fine, even if you don’t like being captured yourself.”
Kirlia kicked the sand, his legs trembling rapidly until he used Confusion to force them to go still.
Aron glanced at Kirlia in worry before remembering that she was supposed to be ignoring him, returning to her half-eaten Chesto Berry.
“Hey, Milo! You ready?” Zack called. Whismur’s ears flapped in excitement.
Kirlia folded his arms and gracefully hopped in front of Milo, coolly observing Zack and Whismur.
“You don’t have to battle. I can use someone else,” Milo said. Kirlia folded his arms and stubbornly fixed Milo with a stern glare. Milo held up his hands placatingly.  “Alright then. Let’s get started, Zack!”
“I’m gonna be over here,” Melissa said, heading over to a secluded spot by Granite Cave. “Worldbuilding with ancient legends is definitely a surefire hook for readers.”
She opened a notebook and started writing.
Milo and Zack gave her enough space to focus on her own activities but still allow her to watch their practice match.
“Let’s start with Astonish!” Zack exclaimed.
“Counter with Magical Leaf!” Milo yelled.
Whismur’s ears waggled cutely as he charged at Kirlia, not even remotely threatening. Kirlia raised his arm and stopped Whismur in his tracks with Confusion, encasing the Whisper Pokémon in blue light before tossing him aside with a disinterested flick.
“Er, looks like we both have things to work on,” Zack admitted. “You alright, Whismur?”
Whismur’s mouth quivered, but he unleashed an Echoed Voice anyway. Kirlia teleported away from the attack, reappearing behind Whismur and striking him with Magical Leaf.
Milo quickly found that Kirlia didn’t follow instructions. If he called for Magical Leaf, Kirlia would use Confusion. If he asked Kirlia to dodge with Teleport, Kirlia would stand his ground instead.
“Shock Wave!” Milo called, realizing Kirlia hadn’t used this move yet. Kirlia had no issue hurling Magical Leaf or Confusion, nor evading with Teleport. It seemed odd that Kirlia held back on using the last move in his arsenal.
Instead of attacking with Shock Wave, Kirlia paused to glare at Milo, his red eyes blazing furiously. While his guard was down, Whismur managed to land a Stomp and Astonish combo.
“Sorry, Kirlia,” Milo said. “You don’t have to do Shock Wave if you don’t want to.”
Kirlia stared down at the sand, then released a weak jolt of electricity that fizzled out ten feet away.
Shock Wave was a mid-level Electric attack, stronger than Thundershock but not nearly as powerful as Wild Charge. Heck, some people would barely consider that weak jolt a Thundershock.
“Don’t worry, we’ll work on it some other time,” Milo said.
Kirlia huffed as if he didn’t believe there would be ‘some other time.’ But the tension visibly melted out of his shoulders.
Aron called out to Kirlia from the sideline but hastily looked away when Kirlia glanced at her.
“Echoed Stomp!” Zack shouted.
“That’s not a real-” Milo started to say, but his mouth dropped open in surprise when Whismur skillfully stomped on Kirlia’s head while wailing loudly enough to create several orange sound waves of increasing size.
“Use Confusion and stop those sound waves!” Milo yelled hastily.
To his amazement, Kirlia recovered quickly and thrust his arm out just as the sound waves were about to pummel him, freezing the orange rings in place.
“Alright, we found our mojo!” Milo cheered. “Now throw them back!”
Whismur weaved to the side to avoid the oncoming Echoed Voice, but Kirlia trapped him between two of the rings and flicked the smallest one into his body, which dissipated with a loud shriek.
Unfortunately, Zack was caught in the blast zone.
“ARE YOU ALRIGHT?” Zack shouted to Whismur, who just looked confused.
“Soundproof ability!” Melissa yelled. “The Whismur family is immune to all sound-based attacks!”
“WHAT?” Zack shouted back, his volume control sorely lacking.
“Okay, I think we’re good,” Milo said. “I’m calling it off until Zack gets his hearing back. Again.”
Kirlia released another weak Shock Wave, sighing when the ocean barely conducted it.
“You’re really strong, Kirlia,” Milo said. “I’m sure you’ll get Shock Wave with enough practice.”
Kirlia turned away.
“Hey, Diogee’s still banned from battling for another nineteen hours-oh, don’t give me the Lillipup eyes, Diogee, you know it’s true-but anyway, I think you’d be great to have on my side when I rematch Veronica. Again, I’m not gonna force you to battle if you don’t want to. And I promise I’ll release you if you prefer living in Granite Cave. Melissa won’t hang onto Aron either, I trust her. Just think about it, okay?”
Kirlia teleported onto a flat rock and stared off into the horizon. Assuming Kirlia just wanted to think for a little while, Milo left him alone for now.
“Sir, we’ve delivered the letter,” Melissa reported, putting her PokéNav on speakerphone so Milo and Zack could listen in too. “Though I do have some concerns about you apparently believing we’re a free delivery service. And some warning about the visibility in Granite Cave would have been nice to know.”
Orville chuckled. “Of course. I apologize for that. I haven’t received word from Amanda and Lydia yet, but I assume that’s because Slateport has plenty of tourist attractions and has probably distracted them with other pursuits.”
“Your son is even cooler in person!” Milo exclaimed. “He sure knows a lot about ancient legends!”
“Speaking as a father, you don’t know how much it prides me to hear that, Milo,” Orville replied. Someone else spoke in the background. “Yes, of course, Clara. I’ll be right down. Ah, if you’ll excuse me, I have another matter to attend to. There was another incident with the MULCHGT machine, and I have no choice but to fire the scientist responsible. Plus we may need to bring in some Pokémon to trim Dylan’s new Tangrowth vines to a manageable length. And by manageable length, I mean make some other parts of his body visible besides his eyes.”
The PokéNav clicked, signaling the end of the call.
“We should really get Bradley’s phone number,” Zack said. “He’ll be happy to hear that, I think. Or Bradley happy, which is probably just a notch higher than grumpy.”
“Next time we get used as a delivery service, I’m charging for labor costs,” Melissa muttered.
“I can’t wait to see how Orton’s gonna use that painting in Dr. Magnezone,” Milo said.
“Hey, Zack. Something I’ve been meaning to ask you,” Melissa said as she flicked through her phone. “Orton mentioned a legend from Ilex Forest. Since you’re from Johto, I was just wondering if you’d heard anything like that.”
Zack shook his head. “Must be a local legend. Johto has tons of folktales that are specific to the area. I’m from Olivine City, on the opposite side of the region from Ilex Forest. I grew up with tales of the Beast of the Sea, not the Voice of the Forest. First time I’ve heard that one, actually.”
“Spill, I wanna hear all about this Beast of the Sea,” Melissa said.
“Well, there’s an archipelago called the Whirl Islands just outside Olivine,” Zack said. “It’s really dangerous for ships because of the constant whirlpools that surround the caves there. Sailors say the whirlpools were created from the Beast of the Sea’s power to protect itself from humans. Supposedly it sleeps in the deepest ocean trench.”
“So did your Beast of the Sea create Johto’s oceans?” Milo asked.
“No, it just guards them. Ocean creation seems to be a Hoenn specialty,” Zack replied.
“I don’t want to be reminded of Team Aqua right now,” Melissa sighed. “Two encounters with that John guy is enough.”
Melissa was spared the pain of reflecting on their chance meetings with Team Aqua due to a sandy cloud billowing in their direction. Milo tossed Melissa and Zack goggles and an oxygen mask just in case, but the sandy cloud subsided to reveal Veronica in her pizza delivery outfit, which heavily resembled medieval armor. Her Dodrio’s three heads pecked at a pouch on her hip, but Veronica simply moved the flap out of their way and let them eat.
Her steel gauntlet blocked the heads from accidentally pecking her arm as they squabbled among themselves for food.
“Yo! I’m all done with my shift!” Veronica exclaimed. “Ready for the rematch?”
Somehow Milo had lost track of time. The sunset bathed the ocean in a brilliant shade of orange, the low tide pulling water further away from the beach.
“Maybe tomorrow?” Milo asked. “My Pokémon aren’t ready tonight.”
Veronica nodded. “Sure, no prob! Meditite likes to spend evenings training alone anyway. See ya tomorrow!”
She hopped on Dodrio and sped back to town.
“We should get back to the Pokémon Center and rest up,” Melissa yawned.
While Zack helped Melissa pick up her things, Milo checked up on Kirlia. The Emotion Pokémon stood up, brushing sand off his skirt-like ruffles. Then he nodded to Milo.
“So you want to battle tomorrow then?” Milo asked.
Kirlia crossed his arms.
“Just making sure,” Milo said. “Let’s do our best, okay?”
The corner of Kirlia’s mouth quirked, though it disappeared faster than Milo could blink.
They met Veronica on the beach after breakfast. The Pokémon Center had great beds, and Milo was well-rested for his rematch.
Diogee still had a few hours left before his battling ban was lifted, so he had to stay sidelined. He wasn’t happy, but Milo promised to use him in his next gym battle.
Only the first bed had collapsed while he was on it, so he considered it a good night.
“This is a rematch between the Dewford Gym Leader Veronica and the challenger Milo Murphy!” Melissa declared. “Single battle rules, two Pokémon allowed per side! When you’re ready, release your Pokémon!”
“Sorry, Milo! Still don’t plan on losing! Fighting spirit, Riolu!” Veronica yelled, tossing her Poké Ball high into the air.
Riolu adopted a battle pose that might’ve been intimidating if he was larger, but came off as rather adorable instead.
“Let’s go, Marshtomp!” Milo shouted.
Marshtomp’s Poké Ball hit a beach umbrella, snapping it shut just as Marshtomp popped out. Only his legs and tail were visible, and the battle was put on hold so Milo could extract Marshtomp.
Milo used a pair of scissors to cut through the giant Psyducky Momo emblazoned across the umbrella. Thankfully, Marshtomp forgave him once he was freed and they turned back to Veronica and Riolu.
“Quick Attack!” Veronica shouted.
“Block with Mud Bomb!”
Marshtomp created a giant ball of mud and held it above his head, eyes scanning the beach wildly for Riolu. But the Fighting-type didn’t stay still, disappearing just as Marshtomp seemed to figure out where to aim.
Just as Marshtomp closed his eyes and cried out in frustration, Riolu kicked him in the chest, jumping away when Marshtomp lost his grip on the Mud Bomb and splattered himself.
The damage was minimal, and mud didn’t bother Marshtomp. Though the grains of sand clinging to his body probably chafed.
“Force Palm!”
“Use Dig to avoid it!”
Marshtomp burrowed under the sand, barely evading Force Palm. The sand shifted around Riolu’s feet, knocking him off-balance. Marshtomp’s hand shot out from the sand, clamping down on Riolu’s tail and holding him in place as he was doused with a point-blank Water Pulse.
Coughing, Riolu pulled away and jumped back several feet to recover.
“Mud Bomb again!” Milo shouted.
As another ball of mud formed in Marshtomp’s arms, Veronica thrust out her hand. “Use Copycat and keep throwing!”
Riolu dodged Mud Bomb, brown waves of light rippling off his body. Then the light solidified into a muddy ball, and Riolu threw it at Marshtomp, then prepared to hurl a second one.
Marshtomp evaded the first Mud Bomb, which sailed over his head and hit a sand dune. Riolu’s Mud Bombs weren’t as large as Marshtomp’s, but Riolu flung them so frequently that the globs blocked any of Marshtomp’s Water Pulses and Mud Bombs.
Using a close-range attack was impossible. Riolu was much faster than Marshtomp and would see him coming from a mile away.
“Use Water Pulse and make it extra-large this time!” Milo shouted.
“Deflect it with Force Palm!” Veronica yelled.
Marshtomp hurled an enormous ball of water at Riolu, who thrust out his arm in one quick jab before the Water Pulse hit him. The shock wave repelled the Water Pulse and sent it flying back at Marshtomp, though it only soaked the sand under his feet.
Now that Copycat had worn off, Milo figured it was safe to use a close-range move.
“Rock Tomb!” Milo ordered.
Marshtomp cried out, a giant rock materializing in his arms, only to fall flat on his face when his legs sunk into the sand as he lunged at Riolu. Rock Tomb broke apart, the shards landing on Marshtomp’s head. The more he struggled, the deeper he sunk.
Quicksand trap.
Milo had been caught in quicksand before, and he knew the important thing was that struggling only pulled the unlucky person under the surface.
“Relax and don’t panic!” Milo called as Riolu bombarded Marshtomp with back-to-back Force Palms. Riolu teetered on the edge of the quicksand and safe area, taking time to charge up pressure behind his Force Palms before unleashing them on a weary Marshtomp.
Marshtomp’s arms jerked slightly as the paralysis from a Force Palm kicked in. The quicksand was at his waist level now.
“Alright, we’ve got him trapped and immobilized, Riolu!” Veronica shouted. “Let’s do one huge Force Palm for the final blow!”
Riolu put his paws together, pressure building for one last strike.
Marshtomp screeched harshly, a light blue aura surrounding his body. With a single sweep of his arms, several large Mud Bombs shot out and blasted the quicksand away.
Startled, Riolu lost his concentration and the mud absorbed the pressure behind his Force Palm, the attack dissipating into thin air.
“Awesome job, Marshtomp!” Milo grinned. He’d seen this power before when Sara challenged one of her Dr. Magnezone friends to a battle. Her opponent’s Dewott had defeated Nyx with two Razor Shells powered up by the Torrent ability.
“Use Water Pulse and don’t hold back!” Milo shouted.
Marshtomp gave Riolu no time to avoid Water Pulse, and the attack sent the Fighting-type skidding several feet until he came to a stop at the base of a large rock. The sandy field was doused completely, and Milo paused to empty out his shoe, which was almost filled to the brim with wet sand.
A soaked Riolu used the rock for support as he faced down Marshtomp, then he lost his grip completely and fainted.
Torrent’s blue aura faded, and Marshtomp collapsed too.
Melissa waited for either Pokémon to stand up, but a full minute passed and neither one stirred. “Double knockout! Marshtomp and Riolu are unable to battle!” she announced. “You each have one Pokémon left!”
Milo and Veronica recalled their Pokémon. “I didn’t know you had a Riolu,” Milo called to his former babysitter. “He’s really cute!”
“Thanks, but flattery gets you nowhere,” Veronica teased. “I took a trip to Iron Island three months ago. Great training grounds for Fighting-types. Anyway, there’s a guy who’ll give trainers a Riolu egg if you can make it to a hard-to-reach location. And I managed it with flying colors! So yeah, Riolu’s my most recent addition.”
Milo grinned. “Well, since you’re kind enough to show me your new Pokémon, I think it’s only fair that I return the favor. Meet Kirlia!”
He released Kirlia from his Poké Ball, deciding against a dramatic throw this time.
“Very graceful,” Veronica smiled as Kirlia quivered in place. “You didn’t have Kirlia when we battled last time, right?”
“We befriended him in Granite Cave,” Melissa said. “My Aron is Kirlia’s best friend.”
At the mention of Aron, Kirlia crossed his arms.
“We should really have them make up,” Zack said. “They had a disagreement over staying in the cave and coming with us and now they won’t talk to each other.”
“You know Kirlia don’t naturally live in Granite Cave, right?” Veronica asked. “They prefer grassy areas. And Kirlia and its evolved forms don’t typically live in the wild. They thrive on human companionship.”
Kirlia scoffed and turned his back to her.
“Sorry,” Veronica said sheepishly. “We should really continue this battle. Fighting spirit, Meditite!”
Meditite hovered in a meditation pose for just a moment before touching down on the beach.
“Alright, last Pokémon inspirational words! Power comes from the heart and strong will stems from the spirit! With heart and spirit combined, we won’t ever admit defeat!” Veronica exclaimed.
“Are you finished?” Melissa asked.
“Yeah, I was thinking of making it shorter. It’s a work in progress,” Veronica shrugged.
“I liked it,” Milo said, inspiration striking him. “Yeah, but Kirlia and I have stuff that you’ll never have! Like sweater vests, and backpacks, and...um, Zack!”
“Please don’t drag me into another one-liner,” Zack sighed.
Melissa rolled her eyes. “Guys, just start the battle. I’ve seen Dragonite Ball Z fight scenes move faster than you two.”
“Magical Leaf!” Milo yelled.
“Send those leaves back with Confusion!” Veronica shouted.
Magical Leaf flew back and forth between Kirlia and Meditite as if they were flinging many photosynthesizing ping pong balls at each other. Kirlia held his arm at the ready, while Meditite jabbed the air as she sent Magical Leaf in the opposite direction.
Finally, Meditite divided the leaves into two groups and hurled the first one at Kirlia, who teleported out of the path of the first group and directly in front of the second.
“Detect, then Meditate!” Veronica ordered.
Meditite avoided another Magical Leaf with Detect, which put her behind a sand dune.
“Teleport over there and use Magical Leaf again!” Milo shouted.
Kirlia vanished and reappeared on top of Meditite’s sand dune, striking her with another Magical Leaf as she meditated. Meditite barely reacted, her eyes closed in concentration.
“Force Palm!” Veronica shouted.
Meditite flung out her palm, blasting Kirlia away with a Force Palm. Kirlia tumbled against the sand for a moment before lightly springing to his feet.
“Use Confusion on the water and fling it at Meditite!” Milo yelled.
Kirlia pointed to the ocean, raising an entire ball of seawater into the air. With his other arm, he separated a confused Magikarp from the ball and flicked it away. Zack screamed as the Magikarp landed next to him, and Diogee bit the Magikarp on its tail and dragged it back to the ocean.
“Sorry!” Milo called to Zack.
“Nothing should have that many fins...” Zack shivered, huddling behind Diogee.
Meditite grabbed hold of the water ball with her own Confusion, and Kirlia gritted his teeth as he grappled for control over it. The water ball hovered precariously between them, sometimes jerking to one side or the other but never making significant progress to either party. After several tense seconds, the ball finally inched closer to Kirlia’s side.
“Break Confusion and switch to Magical Leaf!” Milo shouted.
Kirlia’s eyes returned to normal, and the shock of her opponent cutting off an attack caused Meditite to pull her arms in to prepare another Force Palm. The water ball instantly hurtled in her direction, smashing into Meditite and her own Confusion attack stopped as she sputtered and coughed.
Kirlia scored two Magical Leaf attacks on Meditite before she recovered from the seawater’s saltiness.
“Detect!” Veronica shouted as Kirlia hurled a third Magical Leaf attack at Meditite, who vanished instantly.
Milo pointed to a cluster of sand dunes. “Confusion on those dunes! Don’t let her Meditate again!”
Kirlia leveled the sand dunes, but Meditite wasn’t behind them. Then Meditite appeared behind Kirlia, jabbing her palm into Kirlia’s side. Kirlia cried out, dropping to his knees as a shock wave passed through his body. A second Force Palm sent Kirlia flying into the water. The waves knocked him down as he struggled to stand.
“Teleport back to the land!” Milo shouted. But Kirlia’s limbs didn’t obey, jerking uncontrollably as he tried to bring his hands together.
“Alright, let’s end this! Use-Meditite, what’s wrong?” Veronica gasped, her command cut short as Meditite dropped to her knees too.
Yellow sparks flew off both Pokémon’s bodies.
“Milo, I read about this once!” Zack shouted. “Kirlia must have the Synchronize ability! If the opponent burns, poisons, or paralyzes him, they’ll get the same status condition!”
“Never took you for a bookworm type,” Melissa said.
Zack shrugged. “I had this whole phase where I wanted to be an Umbreon and I learned as much as I could about them. Don’t ask why. I was a weird kid.”
Meditite stumbled towards Kirlia, each step slow and deliberate. She drew her arm back as she stood over Kirlia, who kneeled in the surf and glared at Meditite obstinately. Then Kirlia’s arms shot forward, grasping Meditite’s feet, which were half-hidden under the flowing waves.
Meditite jerked back, pressure building against her palm. Then sparks flowed up her legs, suddenly turning into full-blown electricity that coursed into the rest of her body.
Neither Veronica or Milo expected that.
Milo had avoided Shock Wave throughout the entire battle, figuring that Kirlia wanted to practice it more before feeling comfortable enough to use it on an opponent.
Water conducted electricity, and Kirlia had used that principle without hesitation. Even a weak Electric move could be amplified with a proper conduction source.
Meditite fainted, her body half-lying on the beach, limbs still twitching.
Melissa’s eyes were wide as she stared at the still-paralyzed Kirlia. “Meditite is unable to battle. Kirlia is the winner. The challenger wins the match,” she recited.
Milo pulled Kirlia onto the sand, then quickly popped a Cheri Berry into the Emotion Pokémon’s mouth, tossing one to Veronica so she could help Meditite as well.
Now that his paralysis was gone, Kirlia sat up with no trouble. His eyes glowed blue for a moment, and Milo was shoved away from Kirlia.
“Sorry,” Milo said. “I’ll give you some space.”
“Well, that was something,” Veronica said once Meditite recovered from paralysis. “Surprising people as always. It’s a good family trait. You’ve really grown since I last saw you, and I don’t just mean that literally.”
“I didn’t tell Kirlia to use Shock Wave like that,” Milo admitted. “I mean, it’s kinda underhanded.”
Kirlia crossed his arms.
Veronica grinned. “You call it underhanded, I call it a brilliant use of the environment. Pokémon can think for themselves too, you know. I mean, what’s the fun in battling if we just call out what we’re doing all the time? I always welcome surprises in my fights.”
Meditite bowed to Kirlia.
“See, Meditite thinks you won fairly too,” Veronica said. “And that means I can present you with the Knuckle Badge.”
Milo took the boxing glove-shaped badge from Veronica and held it up to the sun to admire its sheen. Diogee placed his paws on Milo’s shoulders, rising to his hind legs to get a good look at the badge too.
“Looks like you’re a fourth of the way there,” Melissa said. “That’s progress.”
Aron popped out of her Poké Ball and rammed into Kirlia, burying into his side for a hug. Kirlia froze for a moment before wrapping his arms around Aron’s steel hide as well.
“Thanks, Veronica,” Milo said. “I’ll keep doing my best!”
“Wouldn’t expect anything less from a Murphy,” Veronica smiled.
Milo and Veronica waited in the Pokémon Center lobby, allowing Nurse Joy to take charge of their exhausted Pokémon. Aron’s steel-coated head rested in Melissa’s lap, occasionally glancing to the door in case Kirlia came out.
“Alright, here’s my contact number,” Veronica said, handing over Melissa’s PokéNav. “Just give me a call if you wanna chat or need some good old gym leader advice!”
“I’m just glad you fought a gym leader who doesn’t live underground and smells like sewers,” Zack whispered to Milo.
“So where are you guys heading next?” Veronica asked.
“Slateport City,” Melissa replied. “They have all sorts of cool stuff in their seaside market.”
“And a Contest Hall for Zack,” Milo added.
“I think I’m a lot more prepared this time,” Zack said.
“Well, I assume you’ll be stopping in Mauville City for your next gym battle,” Veronica said as she leaned against the wall. “Just so you know, I heard Clyde is retiring. So you might be facing someone totally new.”
“Clyde retiring? Are you sure?” Milo gasped, sharing an alarmed glance with Melissa.
Veronica nodded. “Yeah, he’s an odd guy. He always struck me as the type of old guy who likes to keep working.”
“So you know this Clyde?” Zack asked.
“Every kid in the region knows Clyde!” Melissa exclaimed. “If you ever have a broken toy, he’s the guy to fix it. Doesn’t matter if it’s electronic or a doll either. Milo and I brought so much stuff over for him to fix when we were kids. Though between you and me, he’s terrible with money.”
“He specializes in Electric-types,” Milo added. “And his inventions really spruced up Mauville City.”
“Last I heard, he was entering a partnership with some tech corporation,” Veronica said. “Maybe the plans fell through or something. I should really keep in contact more.”
Milo and Veronica’s Pokémon swarmed them as soon as they were released, and the conversation was dropped. Diogee and Marshtomp climbed all over Milo, the former happy that his battling ban was finally lifted. Riolu hugged Veronica while Meditite bowed in greeting.
Aron nudged Kirlia’s leg, gently herding him to Milo. Diogee and Marshtomp let Milo stand up.
“We’re gonna be leaving Dewford soon,” Milo said. “You wanna join us?”
He placed Kirlia’s Poké Ball on the bench and waited.
Aron stomped her stubby leg, and Kirlia rolled his eyes. Then he pushed the button on his Poké Ball, disappearing in a flash of red light. Diogee, Marshtomp, and Aron cheered as Milo pocketed Kirlia’s Poké Ball.
“Guess you’re stuck with us,” Melissa said to Aron. “Welcome to the club.”
“Bye, Veronica!” Milo waved as the S.S Plunge pulled away from the docks of Dewford Town. “Keep in touch, okay?”
“You bet!” Veronica shouted back. “See ya later!”
Within minutes, Dewford Town was just a speck on the horizon.
Melissa’s PokéNav buzzed, but she was too slow to pick up and the call went to voicemail.
“Melissa, are you guys coming?” Lydia’s voice sounded strained. “We have a situation and I need you guys pronto!”
And that concludes Dewford Town! I have been looking forward to writing Slateport City for so long! I have some fun stuff planned for that city!

With a Kadabra as my only team member I take on Roark. His German name is Veit and he's sending in a Geodude. Dude didn't stay on the field for long.
Kadabra is still a fast powerhouse and all of his rock Pokémon were no match for its Confusion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because Kadabra is my only Pokémon, that means, it's getting all the exp. So, naturally, I'm overlevelled right now.
That will fix itself once I get more members of my party.
Speaking of, I went through Eterna Woods with a really nice girl, Cheryl, who healed my Kadabra after every fight. That was so nice of her and her Chansey.
And once we were on the other side of the forest, in Eterna City, I knew what to do next.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Catching Pokémon! Look at these two! Isn't Bronzor adorable? It's ability is Levitate, so it's the perfect ability. It can protect my team against such powerful moves as Earthquake. I called it Ben, after the bell in Big Ben Tower. It'll be a bell someday after all.
And then, look at this. The return of MC Hammer! My perfect little Meditite! It even has the right ability Pure Power! Which, if I recall correctly, is the only ability it can get prior to Gen 5, but I'm calling it a win anyway!
And with the improvement of Gen 4, it'll be even more useful than it was back in Hoenn! Because now a move's category is determined by the move itself rather than the type of the move.
Fire Punch? Physical. Shadow Ball? Special. So much more sense now.
Tumblr media
And I found a good use for the Pokétch. It displays my party, so I can keep track of it at any time. Piplup is still on the team, because it not only learns Rock Smash but also Cut, both moves I need to proceed.

KND-Pokémon Crossover
Ok, so I am very fond of crossover, and Pokémon being one of my favorite video game, I had for a while the idea to draw Sector V with their Pokémon team. I tried to match the Pokémon with each characters' personalities (i tried) : I will also say why I chose some of the Pokémon. For the kids, I wanted to give them unelvoved pokémon to keep the idea they're still kids (babies Pokémon/pre-evolutions). Numbuh 1 : -Charmander, being the leader, he deserves to get a starter Pokémon and i think Charmander is the best choice (also see more below) -Vulpix, because it's cute and why not -Fletching, everyone needs a flying type pokémon in his/her team -Abra, a psychic type pokemon that reminds me of Numbuh 1, don't ask why, it just does (also see more below) -Eevee, because I wanted to -Seel, because I'm a douche and wanted to give the character a pokémon that reminds their transformation into animals in Operation : G.R.A.D.U.AT.E.S. Numbuh 2 : -Munchlax, because he eats a lot -Skarmory, because steel/flying type is totally Numbuh 2 -Rufflet, because a baby eagle for our american kid suits him good -Starly, because more flying type ! (since Numbuh 2 like to pilot) -Aron, because some diversity, still a steel type because 2x4 tech -Hippopotas, because reference to Operation : G.R.A.D.U.AT.E.S. (yes, everyone will get one) Numbuh 3 : -Dedenne, because she takes care of the hamsters -Stunky, because Bradley/Numbuh 6 -Pansage, BECAUSE RAINBOW MONKEYS!!! -Pansear, BECAUSE RAINBOW MONKEYS!!! -Panpour, BECAUSE RAINBOW MONKEYS!!! -Swanna, because I couldn't find a more proper Pokémon that looks like a crane, reference Operation : G.R.A.D.U.AT.E.S. Numbuh 4 : -Machop, most of his Pokémon are fighting type, nothing more, nothing less -Tyrogue -Mienfoo -Scraggy, because it totally reminds me of Wally -Pancham -Komala, because he turns into a koala in Operation : G.R.A.D.U.AT.E.S. Numbuh 5 : -Vanillite, as a reference to the fourth flavour -Dratini, because it's freaking cute and majestic and Numbuh 5 deserves such a pokémon -Sneasel, because she is a stealth expert and sneaky, plus it looks cool -Rockruff, as a reference to her transformation as a weredog (Rockruff can evolve into Lycanroc, werewolf-like pokémon) -Lapras, because it's majestic just like Numbuh 5 -Deerling, because just like Numbuh 3 I couldn't find a better pokémon that looks like a gazelle, so yeah.... Delightful Children : -Dugtrio alolan form, because I think it's kinda obvious (immediatly thought of them when the pokémon form was released xD) -Magneton -Weezing -Exeggutor -Klingklang -Hydreigon ............. Yeah, their pokémons have more than one head, because you know.... They are always a group. Father : -Mega Charizard X, because I can't deny him a fire/dragon Pokémon, can I ? Also, the final stage of the same starter pokémon as Numbuh 1, them being related and stuff -Houndoom, because it suits Father perfectly -Incineroar, because he's a villain, screw the rules, he gets another starter. -Pyroar, because based on a lion, and a lion is the king/ruler of the jungle, I think it goes with Father's personality -Magmortar, because FIRE, BABY!!! -Liepard, because it's the closest pokémon to a panther, reference to Operation : G.R.A.D.U.A.T.E.S. (yes, i know it's actually a leopard, but we don't have a panther pokémon. Incineroar is more of a tiger than anything else) Monty : -Victini, as a reference to his victory against Grandfather (Victini is the victory Pokémon) fire/psychic type -Serebii, Because why not giving him legendaries pokémon ? grass/psychic type -Manaphy, Because why not giving him legendaries pokémon ? water type -Jirachi, Because why not giving him legendaries pokémon ? steel/psychic type -Mew, Because why not giving him legendaries pokémon ? psychic type -Type:Null, in french, that pokémon is name Type:0, as in zero, so Numbuh 0 gets Type:0 (it's kinda lame, I know, but I was running out of ideas) Numbuh 362 : -Riolu, because it's cute and goes with Rachel's fighting abilities -Meditite, same as above -Ralts, because why not, i think it suits her -Horsea, same as above -Lunatone, because she's the soopreme leader from the MOONBASE -Chimchar, because as soopreme leader she gets a starter : as a reference to her transformation into a monkey in Operation : G.R.A.D.U.A.T.E.S. and since it can evolve into a fire/FIGTING type, it's totally the perfect choice for her Numbuh 60 : -Snorunt -Spheal -Snover -Glaceon -Cubchoo -Cryogonal Heh, most of his Pokémon are ice type... what a coincidence... Numbuh 86 : -Nidoran female -Vullaby -Froslass -Blissey, as a reference to her old job as a medic -Smoochum -Growlithe, >figures....< As you can see, her Pokémon are only female because she hates boys. Her growlithe is also a female. Cree : -Persian -Gardevoir -Medicham -Lopunny -Meowstick -Zororark, because it can change apparences (B.R.A. tech reference) Other than that, I think it suits Cree, but I can be wrong. Chad : -Passimian -Machoke -Rhydon -Swellow -Bisharp -Luxray Because they all look cool for Chad ! Grandfather : -Mega Alakazam, because it reminds me of Grandfather. Also, I wanted the final form of a Pokémon that Numbuh 1 has, because they are related. Is it necessary? Maybe not, but here it is anyway -Hypno, because he brainwashed everyone -Chandelure, because it's creepy, just like Grandfather -Relicanthe, because it's almost a fossile Pokémon and Grandfather is reaaally old -Tyrantrum, same as above -Murkrow, because I wanted him to have a dark type Pokémon And that's it, folks ! I didn't think more for others characters because it's kinda hard to make all of these pokémon teams. When I wrote "it suits perfectly the character", it's only my opinion, it's okay if you don't agree with me : it is how I see the characters. When I will have the time, I’ll make fanart out of it...... So what do you think?

So I’ve been doing another weird run in Omega Ruby again, and I wanted to document some of it because I keep thinking about it a lot. I decided to take after my in-game father and become the master of normal-types. Here were my rules:
I can only keep one from each evolution line ending in a normal-type Pokemon.
(There are 12 such lines in Omega Ruby: Linoone, Swellow, Slaking, Exploud, Delcatty, Spinda, Zangoose, Wigglytuff, Castform, Kecleon, Girafarig, and Dodrio. While Swablu and Azurill are also normal-types, they don’t evolve into normal-types and so were left off this list. You could try this in Alpha Sapphire, but then you don’t get Zangoose)
If my Pokemon feints, it dies and must be released.
Battle Style -> set
Exp. Share -> off
No o-powers
No anything that requires connecting to another device.
Since it’s necessary, I will permit one non-normal-type Pokemon to be an HM-slave (I ended up with a Tentacool), because the only normal-types that can learn Dive are Bibarel and Arceus, neither of which are in this game. It can never be sent out in battle though.
Here were the results:
So when I started this run, some things became immediately apparent. Since all your Pokemon are at least half-normal-type, most of them are weak to fighting which instantly makes any fighting types you encounter way more scary.
Rock-types and steel-types are also annoying, since they resist your stab moves. Ghost-types might be immune to you, but you are also immune to ghost-types, so those battles end up rather fair.
Another thing is that since your Pokemon can never faint, it’s best to try and make them have defensive sets of moves and stats; Those specialized for attacking don’t live very long.
Roxanne seemed like she would be difficult, but Whismur comes with Echoed Voice, which just keeps increasing in power. After the 5th+ consecutive use, it’s at 200 power, and it barely matters that her Pokemon resist. Brawly also seemed like he’d be quite a task, but Taillow’s flying moves made short work of him.
My first death was my Whismur against a Carvanha in the soda shop that knew Focus Energy. I have learned to fear that move, because this is not the only Pokemon that eventually dies from it. Just bumping your crit rate up to 1/2 might not sound that great, but when you’re not allowed to faint ever it becomes really scary.
My Taillow died trying to switch into the Winstrate Grandma’s Meditite.
Watson’s gym was nothing against the stupid good special defense of my Delcatty.
I caught a Spinda on route 113, taught it some moves via TM, then sent it into battle against a hiker. The hiker sent out Geodude and so I was like “well ground-type moves beat rock-types so this would be a good time to use the dig move I just taught it”. The Geodude used Magnitude. *sigh* Welp, bye Spinda.
The next 4 gyms went very easily, then my Linoone managed to die because of its own Double-Edge, and my Zangoose and my Delcatty both died shortly after because of Maxie’s Crobat’s Acrobatics. Always liked that move.
For those counting, you would know I only have 6 Pokemon remaining, which makes things even more tense because another death means I don’t even have a full team, but lucky me the rest of the game was rather uneventful until the Elite Four.
Before I start the Elite Four, let’s look at my champions.
Tumblr media
Once Slakoth evolves into Vigoroth and loses that horrible Truant ability, it become amazing. It has a self-healing move, and can learn both Bulk Up and Amnesia, which makes it really easy to sweep entire teams with it.
Once it was of level to evolve into Slaking, I decided not to do it, because I really didn’t want that ability back. At least this means I can give it the eviolite and have it be even more of a defensive beast. The singular attacking move gets switched out when I feel like it.
Named after the activity it is literally incapable of doing since it became a Vigoroth.
Tumblr media
Similar to Vigoroth, Girafarig just collects a giant bundle of stat buffs before anything else. Sometimes, I switched out Double Team with an actual attacking move like Psychic, but mostly I just Baton Pass into Kecleon or Castform.
Named after that weird Giraffe from Madagascar.
Tumblr media
Castform surprised me with how powerful it was. Not only does weather ball become 100 power under any kind of weather, but the weather also helps you and the move is also a stab move. Along with a decent special attack and probable type advantage, Castform can mostly ohko anything that isn’t a water-type.
Named after the water-molecule protagonist of some game I have for the Wii called Dewy’s Adventure.
Tumblr media
It took a bit, but I wanted a Kecleon with Protean ability, and the Dexnav also provided one with nasty plot. So I built a special Kecleon, because most of my Pokemon were physical attackers at the time. The three attacking moves are swapped out with whatever seems appropriate at the moment
Named after the chameleon from Tangled.
Tumblr media
I was never quite happy with Wigglytuff’s move set, but it did it’s job of being a tank. It’s high health was good, and reflect would fix it’s low-physical defense. Its main job was using its typing and Dazzling Gleam to get rid of annoying fighting-types.
Named after the other super tough pink puff.
Tumblr media
Dodrio was probably the best attacker on my team, but it only really comes out when I’m in trouble. Always super worried about it dying, because there are no more replacements. It can ohko many things with Return and Drill Peck. It mostly just functions as my team mascot.
Named after... you know.
On to the Elite Four!
My Vigoroth set up Bulk Up+Amnesia against Sydney’s Mightyena, then swept the entire team with Brick Break. I tried to do the same thing against Phoebe by swapping Brick Break with Shadow Claw, but Dusclops has Curse, which meant I had to keep switching to shake off the curses until the Dusclops killed itself and Sableye was sent out, which doesn’t have Curse.
The battle against Glacia was probably the longest and stupidest battle of the entire run. Castform and Glalie were having an argument about what the weather was, Kecleon was trying to use Thunderbolt to convince Glacia to waste all her full restores on Walrein, Wigglytuff and Girafarig switched out of Froslass’ confuse ray what felt like ten thousand times. It was some glorious madness.
Drake was comparatively easy. Girafirig can set up Calm Mind and Agility against the Altaria, Baton Pass to Castform, which can Hail and then Weather Ball - Ice to sweep the whole team.
Vigoroth couldn’t set up against Steven’s Skarmory because of Toxic, but once Kecleon got rid of it with Thunderbolt, Vigoroth was able to setup against Aggron and sweep the whole team as usual.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s everything. It was pretty fun, and I got to try some Pokemon I wouldn’t have had a reason to use otherwise. I mean, when am I ever going to use Castform again.
Anyway, if you actually got this far, thanks for reading I guess. I just had all these thoughts in my head about the run and wanted to write them down somewhere, but I’d be glad if in interested someone for a couple minutes.

Entry #9
As you can see above, I gave Shana the exp share and added her to the team, as well as some other changes.
I had decided to train my team a lot before heading the the Veilstone gym, so some time has past sense last entry. No, no time skips, or whatever that was, has happened again.
Good news. While we were training, Thona evolved into a drifblim, right around the time that the egg hatched into a Happiny that I named Hannah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did put Hannah into the box, due to her being so little.
And then Shana evolved. That one surprised me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, a good training session.
When I was in Veilstone city, I swore I saw some of those galactic people everywhere. Like, everytime I looked around I saw a new galactic team member. I decided that I would just do the gym and be done with this town.
However, when Shana saw the Veilstone Department Store, she practically dragged me there. I say practically, cause she wouldn’t be able to drag me.
While she looked at all the accessories they had to offer, I bought TM70, TM54, and an excessive amount of ultra balls and max potions.
In the end, I bought a Chatot doll that Shanna was looking at, and at the end there, I was nearly broke. So I headed out and decided that I was going to head to the gym right then.
Of course, we were sidetracked again. Cookiemon dragged, (And yes, I mean he dragged me this time,) into the Game Corner, where I used the very last of my money so Cookiemon could play with the slot machine. I ended up joining him.
When I got a triple 7, I realized that I was going to play till I either had 500 coins, or 0 coins, and that I was addicted to this game. Heh, didn’t mean to. When I got to 81 coins, I was going to take my 21 increase and leave. I had to take Cookiemon by the tail and drag him out.
Finally, I was going to go do the gym in this town.
It was a fighting type gym so I had Thona out front as we solved the weird large puzzle, being challenged by fighting type trainers as I wracked my brain. Let me tell you, every time the other pokemon used Foresight, it made my heart pond everytime even if the fighting move they used didn’t even get Thona into the red.
Eventually, after finishing the puzzle, and battling all the trainers, I made it to the gym leader, Maylene, and battled her. I knew that she would have some pokemon that would cover her flight weakness, so I was worried.
Thona quickly took care of her meditite and got the Machoke into the red, no foresight so far. Maylene used a max potion on the Machoke, but Thona got it back into the red, and then was fast enough that the Machoke couldn’t do another move.
Then was the lucario. I had a plan that If I had to withdraw Thona, I’d put forwards Owen with her fire spin. I had to use a max potion on Thona, before having to take her out and switching her with Owen.
Owen was fast enough with her fire spin that the Lucario didn’t have to use its bone rush it may or may not have had, and we defeated the gym leader Maylene.
Tumblr media
When I walked out of the gym, Lucas was there. I forget if I mentioned him before, but he is Professor Rowan’s assistant. He asked if I could help him get his pokedex back from team galactic. I asked why he was asking me for help, and he admitted that he wasn’t really a battler. I reluctantly agreed, and after healing my pokemon, we headed over to the warehouse.
We quickly battled the team galactic people guarding in front of the warehouse. When Lucas’s Clefairy used metronome and used Weather ball, I breathed a sigh of release. I’ve hear that metronome could use explode and hurt everyone in the vicinity.
Everytime Lucas’s used metronome and used petal dance or dynamic punch, instead of something dangerous, I kept tensing. Do you know how dangerous Metronome is?
Anyway, when we defeated the galactic dudes, they just handed over Lucas’ pokedex and scrammed. Lucas thanked me, saying that he was heading off to Pastoria City.
I was about to say something when--
I--
Wha--
--
When I walked out of the gym, Lucas was there. I had to pause for a moment, before I realized what happened. It was a time skip, a time mishap. I interupted Lucas and said that I knew that he wasn’t a battler, but I would help him get his pokedex.
I then asked if afterwords we could talk. He stuttered over his words, before agreeing to it.
I healed up my pokemon before we confronted the two galactic dudes guarding the front of the warehouse. It was pretty much the same, except that when Lucas’ clefairy used metronome, it used gravity, and then a large beam of light that I didn’t know the name of. {A/N, it was judgment}
So the clefairy used different moves with metronome. I don’t know if that was because I changed the time stream slightly, or if it was going to do it this timeline anyway.
Lucas got his pokedex back, and we went to a bench to talk.
I told him that a time mishap had happened, where suddenly I was thrown backwards in time, but only a few minutes before. I said that it had happened once before, and I just took it as a miracle and left it at that.
When Lucas asked what the miracle was, I looked away and said that Owen had died. I then said that this timeline was only different cause Janna had died.
But then I said that this timeskip wasn’t cause a pokemon had died. I didn’t know why this time skip was different. The only difference so far was that we were having this talk, and that his Clefairy used different moves with its metronome.
Lucas was speechless after I explained everything. He didn’t know what was causing it, and why no one but I was remembering. He promised me that he would look into pokemon who could alter time. I thanked him, and said that he better head to Pastoria City.
We had a small laugh, before we parted ways. I headed back to the warehouse, where I inspected the now empty building. I did find HM02 Fly there, and I had Thona learn it.
I then flew on Thona all the way back to Twinleaf Town. I’ll continue on my journey, but I wanted to rest a little before that.

I’m a sucker for customized Pokemon gyms in Pokemon GO so here are some I’d love to see/help create one day, (including gen3, not including legendaries, but imagine how sick it’d be if we could put THOSE in gyms...):

Dragon gym: Charizard, Dragonite, Salamence, Tropius, Flygon, Gyrados
And plenty of more are possible, like gyms full of all worms/bugs/birds/crabs/seals/dogs/cats and all certain kinds of the same animal, but a lot of those would all consist of the same type so they’d be easy to take down. But still, cool to see.

PokeHalloween Day 16: Leader
not sure if this is more like gym leader or evil team leader but i feel like this could apply to either of em
a while back i did one of those random generators and it said i would be a psychic trainer, and my accessories would be a fuzzy sweater, bandaids, and a pith hat- i started to draw a team based on that but i cant remember what sketchbook i did those sketches in but anyway
if my thing was psychic i would absolutely have a swoobat my fave psychic type- i also added meditite since it was my first ever random encounter shiny // if a gym leader id probably be the third gym leader and kill you with acrobatics dsgjsdajgasjlkj
the reason i say this could also be an evil team is my idea for an evil team would be like trying to get people to love unloved/unappreciated pokemon and theres a surprising amount of people i know who dont like swoobat?? its a fuzzy friend with a heart snoot whats not to love... i figure in that case i might also have bibarel, klefki, druddgion, ice cream guy,  uhhhh idk some other stuff i love pokemon too much to be in the know of which ones the fandom hates lol
(i mean not that i dont have a few pokemon im not fond of but eletross killed my roserade in W2 nuzlocke i have a right to be bitter okay asdjfkldsjghs)
