Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On this day, Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Seeing labor and civil rights as twin pillars of social reform, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked tirelessly to advocate for working people, create connections with labor leaders and union members, play key roles in pivotal strikes, and fight for economic justice on several fronts. He believed strongly in the labor movement asserting that “organized labor has been one of the deterrents of human exploitation throughout its long history in America.”

To honor and celebrate him, the Kheel Center created an exhibit 4 years ago titled "All Labor Has Dignity", highlighting Dr. King and Coretta Scott King's work with the labor movement.

Candy Cane Menorah?

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the electric menorah, or “electric Hanukkah lamp,” is here to stay. And many Hanukkah observers, when pressed, may admit to having a relative who proudly displays one (or more) in a window...

Given the interest in our cowboy-themed menorah post, today we share two electric menorah patents.  

Sixth in our first-ever 8 days of Hanukkah Tumblr series of surprising Hanukkah-related National Archives records. By Miriam Kleiman, Public Affairs.  

Design Patent Case File No. D185,199 - Design for an Electric Hanukkah Lamp, submitted by Ernest Goldberg, NARA ID 167821649. filed 8/13/1958, patented 5/19/1959. 

“Electric Hanukkah Lamp” - rejected, then approved

Ernest Goldberg’s menorah featured the Magen David, Star of David, as the key design feature, to be viewed from front or back, and illuminated “by a new method of wiring, that of distributing the wires through the side arms and then connecting it with the nine individual sockets."

Goldberg’s initial patent application was rejected. He was instructed to:

Remove the words “utilizing the Jewish Star of David” 

Change the description to “electric Hanukkah lamp” 

Redo his messy drawings. 

The “Chief Draftsman” criticized the drawing’s “pale, blurred and indistinct” lines, and demanded a better drawing:

Goldberg resubmitted his design and it was approved. U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Records (RG 241), nearly 5 million files, are held at the National Archives at Kansas City. Explore highlights from his incredible collection in the National Archives Catalog online.

Colgate students attired in suits and ties drink Coca-Cola in the campus store, May 1949. The campus store moved from the basement of Stillman Hall to the basement of East Hall in the late 1930s. It provided students with necessities like ice cream, coffee, and cigarettes, and services such as button-sewing. It was a hub for card games -- and one of the only places on campus where the all-male student population could interact with women 😬 The store moved to the O'Connor Campus Center when it was opened in 1967. If you lived in Arlington in 1981, you might have gone to see “Amin The Rise and Fall, A True Story,” the feature film at the Arlington Theater. In January 1935, The ILGWU Players performed in "In Union There Is Strength". Many ILGWU members were involved with theatre and the arts through various union programs, participating in plays like the one above, choruses, and mandolin orchestras. This was a part of the ILGWU's education program which included arts and music classes plus physical education, labor history, and political philosophy classes.
