During Hanukkah 1932, just one month before Hitler came to power, Rachel Posner, wife of Rabbi Dr. Akiva Posner, took this photo of the family Hanukkah menorah from the window ledge of the family home in Kiel, Germany. The photo looks out on to the town hall building across the road, upon which hangs Nazi flags.

On the back of the photograph, Rachel Posner wrote in German (translated here):

Chanukah 5692 (1932) "Death to Judah" So the flag says "Judah will live forever" So the light answers

Yesterday I decided to watch Hallmark's "Hanukkah On Rye" which was a pretty cute movie. This post is a bit inspired by something a character said in passing, the miracle of the oil is reminiscent of the Jewish nation's survival.

Think about it.

The small bit of oil, a sacred minority among the ravaged temple, was only meant to last for a short amount of time, just a day. By all reasonable means, it wasn't meant to burn for long. And yet, through G-d's miracle, it burned for eight nights, long enough for more pure oil to be made and for the menorah to remain lit.

Similarly, the Jewish nation, a vast minority in the world, reasonably shouldn't be here today. We've gone through multiple genocides, the pogroms, the Holocaust, being expelled from practically every country, being occupied by various empires, the Inquisition, and so many other things. By all reasonable means, we weren't meant to survive. And yet, through G-d's miracle, we're still here. We've outlived them all, long enough to not just survive, but to thrive.

The miracle of the oil isn't just about the oil. It's about us. We are all miracles.

And we will continue to burn against all odds.
