Fan Expo 2017: The Web Series That Could and Would
Carmilla series being at Fan Expo 2017 never should have happened.
But it did.
And it’s glorious.
If you don’t know what Carmilla series is then here’s the short answer right off the top: it’s really, really gay, really, really female/nonbinary centric, and has a really, really great set of cast, crew, and fans associated with it.
Boom. Information acquired.
On the off chance you need a little more background, Carmilla is a queer-centric web series retelling of the 1897 novella by Sheridan LeFanu. It aired for three seasons on KindaTV and, to the excitement of its fans (called ‘Creampuffs’), will be dropping a movie on October 26, 2017. Filmed in Toronto, Ontario, the series and upcoming movie stars Elise Bauman as Laura Hollis and Natasha Negovanlis as Carmilla Karnstein.
The fact that the ‘little web series that could’ has become a movie is the cause of all the excitement. Starting as a low budget YouTube show where fans campaigned hard on social media just to get a second season, Carmilla has turned into a Telefilm and fan-funded movie with millions of views on the original web series and a novel expected in a few years.
Fans were ecstatic to get their season three. No-one ever expected a movie. When the movie was announced last year with no warning, fans exploded with joy and gifs. They wished and hoped and dreamed but three years ago, no-one predicted this. Web series don’t usually become movies, nevermind queer web series with a basically non-male cast.
Now that’s it’s here, everyone’s dead. In the best possible way.
While the internet is a great place to learn all about this web series and the movie, there’s nothing quite like experiencing Carmilla and its Creampuffs in person. The place to find them was Fan Expo in Toronto where the movie’s teaser trailer dropped to thunderous applause, a couple of swoons, and a few giggles.
The perfect mix of feelings to make the audience itch for more Carmilla content.
The teaser trailer (below) provided fans with a taste of what was to come and a promise of more concrete content when the full trailer drops at NYCC later this fall. For now, fans have heads full of speculation and theories to keep them going.
And go they did, participating in a Carmilla panel that always rings a differently than anything else at the conference. This was my fifth year at Fan Expo, my third Carmilla panel at the event, and I’ve still yet to come across another panel that *feels* the same way that the Carmilla panel always does.
Warm and excited and open.
With a cast as eager for the film as the fans are and with a crew who were more than happy to throw out a few long awaited secrets like casual truth-bombs, the experience felt more like a group of friends coming together to chat than a formal panel of people who were paid to be there.
The panel provided lots of fun content and behind the scenes information for fans. This ranged from Bauman (Laura Hollis) and Negovanlis (Carmilla Karnstein) laughing while claiming that their dancing during the long-awaited waltz scene was terrible beneath the cuts, a movie release date of October 26 of this year with a promise of fun events, and the super casual bomb from the moderator that Dominique Provost-Chalkley, a new member cast only as ‘The Woman In Black’, was playing Carmilla’s ex-girlfriend Ell.
The audience and cast, who were unaware that this was an approved spoiler, all had a simultaneous heart attack for very different reasons. It was great.
Astute fans might have noticed that producer Steph Ouaknine also revealed that Ell, in line with the original Woman In Black novel, will be playing a ghost. With the movie just over a month and a half away, that gives Tumblr plenty of time to start creating ghostly ex-girlfriend theories. I have several.
Regardless of the content shared at the panel, the underlying message was the same - everyone believes in this story because no-one can quite believe that it’s actually happening.
Everyone is just really, really happy to be here.
It’s not just the panel that carried this attitude but this seemed to be an attitude that Creampuffs carried with them as they went about their day. While walking the floor over the 4 day event, I’d occasionally play a game of ‘spot the Carmilla fan’ and something that should have been hard for a tiny fandom in a sea of people turned out to be remarkably easy. There was the girl with the ‘Carmilla in NYC’ shirt who I tapped on the shoulder as I passed by, the 4 people from Hamilton, ON in front of me at the Beauty and The Beast panel who were squealing over the movie teaser trailer until I couldn’t help but join in, and the new friends I made in line after a quick text asking if anyone wanted to chat.
Then there were the hard ones, the people who I’d squint at and wonder only to find them later at the panel and smile. Creampuff successfully spotted.
When the weekend was over, weary legs dragging me home, there was the lingering question of how I’d spotted these less obvious Creampuffs. The ones who pinged my creampuff radar without Carmilla swag or snapbacks or flannels.
I still don’t know what it is.
But I know what it feels like, what it’s always felt like whether at panels or in crowded venues or across the internet: warm and excited and open. That same feeling that drove the Creampuffs in attendance to lift up hundreds of signs simply reading “thank you Carmilla.” Happy to just be here, existing and thrilled and a little confused as to how this all happened but thrilled just the same.
And curiously awaiting whatever might come next from the little fandom that could.

『THE ICE 2022 Full Broadcast on Nitere Plus 』|| Uno Shoma interview 11.09.2022
"Top skaters from all around the world gathered for the first time in 3 years. And a collaboration between Uno Shoma and Nathan Chen!" THE ICE 2022 will be broadcasted on 18th September at 7 PM JST.
"Hello, this is Uno Shoma. THE ICE 2022 Aichi Performance will be broadcasted on NiTere Plus."
Q. What kind of Ice Show was THE ICE 2022 this time?
Shoma: "I think it was a great show where so many top athletes from overseas got together. I was also able to do a collaboration with Nathan Chen and I think it became something really good. The overall atmosphere of this ice show, rather than the sense of unity where Japanese shows usually have, it was an ice show where everyone's personality came through strongly. Everyone is also really friendly in the backstage so it was very fun for the ones doing it as well. And I hope people who have been watching, enjoyed us having fun too.” Q. How was your programs? Shoma: “My program, well, I still think about going on as a competitor so, I'm performing my free program for this year. At the competition venue, jumps became the main thing now so the jumps are the main thing for the free program as well. Although there aren't many athletes who raise the difficulty of jumps in ice shows, but as for me, how to put it, I want to show even if it's only a little. Depending on the person I think it might be about spins or expression instead of jumps, but as for this free program, I think it would make it most worth seeing if I was doing a performance similar to the competition. I'll continue doing it preferably without any injuries.” "Please watch it on NiTere Plus." source tweets

An Unexpected Turn of Events
Tumblr media
Hiya, folks! So, as previously announced, the wlw writing project continues after a break with a miniseries set back in Vienna, one of the iconic capitals of opera at the time of Mozart. An emerging singer gets the chance to be an understudy in the latest Mozart’s discussed opera Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), that  premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 May 1786, w and play the pants role of the page Cherubino. Preparing for the role doesn’t quite go as planned… .

Hope you enjoy it: if you do, please consider spreading the word!
____________________
A couple of days later I go back to Melchiorri for another session as planned. He is inflexible that I allow my voice to rest at least one day before practising again not to damage it. As I observe the streets of Vienna passing by from my carriage, I wonder if the little fugitive will visit us today too and a tiny smile crosses my lips. I should be bothered by such unprofessionalism but surprisingly I enjoyed the interruption. A private comedic enteract. It also reminded me the maestro is human: I stole a glance of the domestic, family life people like me is generally unfamiliar with. I don't plan to marry anytime soon honestly if I can avoid it, despite what my Aunt claims. I owe her and my uncle, the wealthy side of my family, everything. She brought me away from the small town by the Alps I lived with Mom, Dad and Hans, my little brother in a wooden cottage by a stream. We weren't indigents, we owned a small typography in town that mainly served the local journal of the valley and well, the church crafting the prayer books you would find on the bench every day at mass. We weren't rich with either: you don't exactly became high socialite with so little. Hans is now running the typography as my father's eyes are not the ones he used to have since he got sick. I don't envy my poor brother; I am glad I got my way out of that life. I am eternally grateful to Auntie Helga for insisting to drag me to Graz and deciding to turn me into a star of the opera after hearing me perform a solo in the church choir during one of her - not so frequent, actually - visits.
Auntie built her fortune over a good marriage with a promising young lawyer who couldn't resist her charm and eventually allowed her to live in sober luxury and even be invited to court. But that seemed to be her sole aspiration in life: she left the small town and never looked back. I am an opera singer, I want more. My career comes first and I have yet to meet a worthy match honestly. And no, I don't want to be a puppet, a doll to a man who will eventually ask me to leave the stage and my beloved arias to look after a child or be a proper wife, whatever it means. So, no, thanks, I chuckle in my head while taking the hand the driver offer me to get off the carriage. When I knock at the door, I am considering that maybe Herr Giorgio is not that bad, even if I didn't like the way he addressed the maid and the poor naughty boy. Nor the lusty looks he throws me. The maid welcomes me with a smile and a little reverence. Good girl, probably she expects me to chastise her too. As if I had any intention to do so! She takes my fur and quickly disappear into the wardrobe room before walking back towardsme. I thank her for her zeal but I know the way to the music room, the maestro is surely waiting for me, I say. I start walking but what she says next makes me freeze, confused. "Actually, Miss...the master is not here today. I'm very sorry. His wife is waiting for you in the tea room". What? That...that must be a joke. The maestro hired to prepare me last minute disappears before the official rehearsals. I turn and throw a bad look at the poor maid, who doesn't deserve it in the least. She's just a messenger, her eyes beg before lowering them to her feet. She's right, my anger is all for Mister Melchiorri. What do I do now? "Whatever, lead the way then" I exclaim, following her. "I can't wait to hear what the fair lady has to say about this". My voice is cold, sardonic; the girl doesn't say a single word while we walk in the opposite direction than my usual route in the house. She's certainly too afraid to dare say a thing. When we finally arrive to the right room, she knocks politely at the door and steps in when a female voice comes from the inside. She bows her head and announces my presence before disappearing back down the corridor. She stops only to let the door open for me. I let out an annoyed sigh and enter. The room is significantly different from the maestro's studio. No instruments, only paintings at the walls and fresh flowers on the little tables around the room. The perfume is delicate and inebriating: are they orchids, I wonder? A neat wooden library holds the place of honour on the main wall, opposite the fireplace and framed by windows that fills the whole room by natural light, even if the sun doesn't shine today: it will probably rain soon. Letting my eyes wonder outside I spot green and a carousel: I didn't realise we were so close to a park! Unlike the music room, here even if the furniture, the velvet armchairs, the Persian rugs, every decor are certainly expensive, the atmosphere is surprisingly...cozy, an adjective I would have never thought of associated with Melchiorri's place. It's almost inviting, calming? "Miss Bauer, I am so incredibly sorry for the the latest developments and all the trouble they must bring on you...but please, take a seat! Franziska will be back soon with fresh tea". I turn to see a woman gesturing me to join her by the fireplace. Her German has a thick Italian accent which gives her "a bit of exotic" as they say at court. She doesn't wear a wig, her long raven hair are done up in an elaborate grateful chignon and two curly strands frame her visage. She reminds me one of those shepherdesses portrayed in bucolic frescos at the Emperor's Palace. Her dress is not in character though: a plain, cerulean dress which is not necessarily cheap but does nothing to enhance her figure. Poor taste probably: even money can do little about it sometimes. She must be in her early thirties or so I wager and thinner than most ladies I know in her standing...I wonder why Melchiorri chose her if he's so clearly fond of female curves. Maybe it's another arranged loveless marriage. I wouldn't be surprised. I oblige and thank her politely, forgetting my anger for a moment. It surprises me, it must be a reflex, a natural response the soothing silky voice of the lady. Like the feral beasts tamed by the gentle melody of Orpheus' song, I think trying to shake away such thought. I suddenly realise that I don't know her name. Melchiorri never talked about her. But I don't want to tell her: it's not a nice thing to say to a wife, right? As if reading my thoughts, she shakes her head slightly embarassed. "I forgot my manners, didn't I?" she sighs. "You must forgive me, Miss, I do not receive many visitors lately and I've never been introduced to famous opera singers...nor any of my husband's pupils. My name is Cecilia, Cecilia Melchiorri". I feel a pang of sadness for this lady excluded from the theatre world his husband works in. I don't get why she has to be cast out like that. I've met other illustrious wives at social gatherings around Vienna or at court. I offer her my hand, gesturing no apologies are needed, and repeat her name. "Cecilia...". Sadly, I completely butcher it: I studied Italian for the opera but my Austrian tongue is still incapable to recreate the sweet sounds that comes so natural to her. It must not be the first time because her lips curl in a quick understanding smile. "You can call me Lia, if it's easier for you. My family used to call me so". Lia...what a pretty little name. I smile, grateful. "I will then, if you don't mind...Lia. You can call me Constanze: it seems only fair". "As you wish, Miss Bauer!" she says before realising her mistake. We share an amused look, even if hers is a bit more bashful. In that moment, after another polite knock, Franziska returns with the tea and some butter biscuits. They're different from the ones Mister Melchiorri usually offers me in his studio. She's serving the tea when a familiar figure materialises on the threshold of the room at my peripheral. Lia is giving him the shoulders so she can't see him. I turn in his direction with a smirk. "I believe we've already met, right, Sir?" The two women turn at unison too and the kid childishly hides his face but doesn't move. After a moment he spies us through his fingers and retrieves his hands, smiling. Franziska puts the tray underneath her arm and tells Lia that she will bring him to his room, making the boy pout. He's quite the character. "Maybe he followed you because he just wants a biscuit" I say, my eyes wandering between them to check if I'm overstepping. "Maybe you're right...but only if he doesn't bother you" Melchiorri's wife concedes with a tired smile. I shake my head and take the decorated plate in my hands. "Would you like one?" I ask in Italian to her son, not sure if he speaks proper German. His face brightens up and he nods enthusiastically. We share a soft laugh, even the maid joins. He gets ready to speed across the room when he stops, considering. He searches his mother for approval. Lia nods, asking to behave like a good boy though. So he approaches slower than he wanted, with great effort to refrain himself, and grabs a biscuit from the plate. Before taking a generous bite, he mutters a quick thank you. "Mystery solved" I comment, placing the plate back on the table. "You must excuse him, Miss Ba- Constanze" Lia say, gently pulling him closer. "Nino is not a bad kid, just a bit of a rascal at times". "A rascal with a sweet tooth" Franziska adds and we share another laughter. "I'm so sorry he interrupted your private session the other day. Franziska had quite a fair share of work to do and I was indisposed in my room, I couldn't look after him as I usually do". I dismiss her apologies, taking a sip of tea. "But it was fun, wasn't it?" I wink at Nino who chuckles. "Yes and she sings very well, Ma" he says, turning to his mother. "Of course, I heard her too from my room" she smiles. "She's a promise of the opera, it's written on the newspapers". "Sing again?" the little boy begs, expectantly. His childish enthusiasm amuses me. "I cannot do those trills now, I need to warm up my voice first" I apologise, before winking. "Another time, I promise". Lia whispers something into his ear and he thanks me, concealing his disappointment. Crumbs are stuck on his lips and make the smile that follows a bit funnier than it was supposed to be. "Now, sweetheart, why don't you follow Franziska back to the kitchen?" She says, stroking his curls. "Take another biscuit and she will give you a glass of milk, just as you like it, huh?". She doesn't have to say it twice: while the maid gently places and arm around his shoulders, guiding him away, he takes not one but two biscuits in his hands. He throws me a conspiratorial look before chuckling. Then he turns towards Lia and stretches his neck to kiss her cheek. She caresses his face and tells him to be good with Franziska. When the two of them are out of the room, she meets my gaze again, shaking hear head. "Apologies, Miss...I sent Franziska to buy these for you this morning and he managed to put his eyes on them. He became obsessed". "Kids" I shrug, unbothered. I am pleasantly impressed that she had such a kind gesture towards me. I mean it could be a way to get on my good side because of the news she has to give me...but after all, this situation is not her fault. Her husband left her to deal with this and me all alone. She turns serious and sighs. "Anyway, have you heard of the flooding near Salzburg?". "What?". "Torrential rain lead to conspicuous floodings in the area surrounding Salzburg. I don't know if Giorgio mentioned it to you but he head there after your session for a family emergency....his brother lives there". "I'm afraid he didn't say a thing about his little journey" I say, trying my hardest not to look angered, even if I am: I would have rather be informed sooner of such details. By the look on her face I can tell she expected such an answer. "He surely thought he would be back in time today, he didn't mention staying for long. But during the night the weather deteriorated and the roads are pretty much impracticable, so to speak. We've just received a note saying he will be back as soon as travelling conditions are restored and the emergency solved. Probably a couple of days...maybe more? He must have sent you a similar one, you just missed it because you were on your way here already". "A couple of days? Maybe more?" I exclaim. That's not promising... "The rehearsals start in a week" I frown. "I still need to practise...". "You are free to do it here if you wish, Miss" she suggests, apologetic yet encouraging. "I am perfectly aware this is a hideous setback for you with such a tight schedule. You must believe me when I say I wish we never put you in this situation...if there's anything I can do, Miss, ask away. I'm not my husband but...". I consider her words for a moment. My mind runs wild to find a solution for this unexpected unfavourable circumstance. I could find another maestro maybe but how, within such a short notice and little time before official rehearsals begin? I could do it on my own but another sudden foolish idea crosses my mind. "Do you play the cello, Mrs. Lia?" I must have taken her by surprise by the look on her face. She tries to conceal it, refilling her cup. "Why, yes. My father was a musician, I took cello classes in my youth but I don't see how this-". "Excellent! Then you can take your husband's place until the he’s back" I exclaim, cutting her short. My words must come as a shock: she almost spits her tea. "Beg pardon, Miss?". "You will be my maestro, well understudy maestro for the time being" I smile, explaining. "You said yourself that you can play the cello, you can assist me as I practice". "But...but I don't have my husband expertise" she objects, at loss of words. "You heard me practicing with your husband, right? So you must know how it should sound. And that aside, you can even tell yourself if my performance is good or not: you have ears too, if I am not mistaken". She opens her mouth to say something, anything to make me change my mind and spare her such thing...but nothing comes. Her lips presses together for a moment before she places her cup back on the table. "Very well, then...if you think it would work" she smiles weakly. "Just be patient with me: I do not usually play opera arias".

Reviews 367: The Visitor
A couple of years ago, Ai released II, which for me is one of the very best albums of space rock, psychedelia, and kosmische ever conceived…a sort of epic paean to all that is great about the tripped out planetarium sonics of both the early 70s and the early 90s. The album was put out by Hauch Records, an experimentally-minded label operating in the German underground that explores much else besides cosmic rock, including minimal drone, ambient, and dub amongst a range of other moods and styles. The label has a longstanding relationship with Ai, having also released the band’s self-titled LP in 2015. But even before that–back in 2011–Hauch released a record called Imitation of Nature from Ai’s keyboard shaman and synthesizer sorcerer Frank Bauer, who on his own explores imaginative worlds of modular magic as The Visitor. Earlier in 2020 and after an extended period of silence, Bauer and The Visitor returned with Installationen, a new LP+digital release on Hauch featuring music that accompanied an art exhibition in 2019, and that sees Bauer rigging his modular setup to play itself, which to paraphrase the liner notes, creates structures based on dualisms between repetition and evolution, and between composition and spontaneous generation. I’ll also mention here that for those who want more of these mystical modular incantations, Installationen was immediately preceded by a an EP called Instrumentals that contains four further pieces from the same sessions.
The Visitor - Installationen (Hauch, 2020) “Installation I” opens with twinkling bell tones drifting in a fog, while android idiophones vibrate through a cold cosmic wind. Liquid oscillations evoke UFO landings as they periodically swoosh upon the mix, and also serve to provide the track with the barest semblance of structure. Industrial scrapes transform into fractal shards as they travel radially outwards, and airy pulses of bass signal mysterious pauses. Distorted feedback fades into mist and snaps of synthetic air land amidst cascading layers of growing and overblowing ambiance…all as chemtrails soar through a cloudy winter sky. Machines purr and coo while gong mallets strike massive metal pipes, creating waves of subsonic wonderment. Ghostly vocalizations intermingle with animalistic growls while organic clouds of bass hum emerge then disperse. Computers flicker and pulse as they execute strange algorithms which cause glitching tracers that repeate at hyperspeed, and the music alternately evokes for me the work of Experimental Audio Research, and Natural Snow Buildings at their most cold and abstract. Then, as everything starts fading, the track airs out, with temple tones sitting beneath a hopeful wash of synthesis.
In “Installation II,” a randomized robot orchestra tunes to the dawn, as machine strings and modular horns swirl into a mysterious miasma. Shadowy tones and glowing strands of starlight intermingle as buzzing blankets of interstellar warmth meet glacial walls of shimmer and shine, with sinister bass synthetics evoking the shadowspells of Igor Wakhevitch. Billowing banks of laser light, silent screams of feedbacking static, and fluid flashes of molten crystal flow together before giving way to moments of sickly tonal meditation, as bass buzz and midrange hum move through chromatic slides and disturbing harmonic abstractions. Hovering clouds of reverb and delay shade in the empty spaces with spectral hues and obscuring layers of interstellar dust, pillowy pads drift over one another in a deep lullaby dance, and blinding rainbows are birthed from decaying plumes of smoke while elsewhere, thousands of viols scream and scratch into a wall of drone mesmerism. Sorrowful whale songs distort beyond comprehension as they diffuse through star oceans and slow motion oscillations are born of resonances and misaligned vibrato until the track devolves into a primitive loop, which is chopped even further by a locked groove.
Tumblr media
In “Installation III,” percussive sequences and modular electronics evoke tropical jungle hand drum ceremonials and minimalist mallet cascades as a shaman casts spells of fourth world magic overhead. Swaths of static blow in like a psychedelic breeze, satellite broadcasts flow around muted computations, and cracks in the ground spew vapors of all possible color. Bassline shadowforms add a further sense of groove…these barely there thuds and pulses repurposed for a forest fusion jam out…while blips and pings create virtual tapestries of insect chatter and birdsong. Millions of modular marimbas are chopped and looped in real time, creating a mesmeric collage of futurist exotica, while elsewhere, swirling shimmers, mirage sonics, and sonar pings smear into cooling haze. It’s as if a hyperspeed conga line is working its way through an island rainforest paradise, wherein metalloid liquids drip from palm fronds into boiling pools of alien fluid, creating strange reverberations that diffuse in every direction.
The vinyl trip ends with “Installation IV” and a calming bath of buzz accented by twinkles and brass synthesis. Reversing wisps dance in the air, bell tones are stretched into infinitely tall vertical structures, and hypnotizing sparkles pan through wavering whooshes and subdued thumps. It’s a study in using constant motion to achieve sonic stasis, with every single element sparkling, swishing, and vibrating, yet somehow causing time to stand still. Healing tones of feedback grow in intensity before dispersing into glimmering bodies of glass, and the modular synths again evoke idiophones–this time mbiras playing some faintly heard paean to the shining sun. Piercing globules of light move backwards and forwards in temporal displacement and a serene storm of synthesis emerges…like an automaton orchestra activated by a slow and stately sunrise. Ascending phaser streaks and drunken bass synths execute a randomized dream dance while all around, clustered gemstones refract solar light into an infinite web of chiming magnificence. And just as the A-side terminates with a locked groove, so does the B-side, with washed out loops cycling peacefully and eternally.
Tumblr media
The trip continues into the digital realm with three further tracks, the first of which is “Installation V.” Smoldering drones and feedbacking flute tones move through atonal harmonizations, while a slowly growing pulse of fevered ambiance enters the scene. Melody is mostly abandoned in favor of texture and resonance, as a malarial fog of silvery synthesis and smoke-shrouded distortion generates flashes of white light and voids of deep darkness. The vibe progressively turns more hopeful as the harmonizing layers ease their oppressive dissonance amidst the calming dances of sci-fi pixie dusk. And from here, the track begins to resemble a mystic sound ceremony, with modulars mimicking gongs, bowed cymbals, and Tibetan bowls while sea crystal pan-pipes are effected into radar bleeps…the whole thing like the Theatre of Eternal Music or Pelt transformed into a machine meditation. As for “Installation VI,” plink plonking and madcap Berlin schools sequences fire, with cut-off manipulations moving the sounds between starlight sparkles, percussive pops, and broken morse code transmissions. The sense of motion and energy is completely arresting in comparison to the preceding track’s sonorous serenity, especially as tick tocking twinkles of multi-colored diamond rotate in maddening patterns. Mysterious vocal tones hover in the background…like chopped and looped mermaid choirs…their gothic ocean arias pulsing at lightspeed and calling to mind Klaus Schulze’s earliest epics, as well as Popol Vuh’s soundtrack work. Indeed, the track almost resembles a Herzog-ian river trek at times, only as if proceeding in hypersonic stop motion, and with minimal melodic development interrupting the interlocking sequential stardance.
The final piece is “Installation VII,” which begins with howling winds and phase-shifting cymbal splashes. Subsuming drones of darkness sit beneath zipping lasers and rushes of white noise, while percussive electronics ping-pong back and forth…their tones evoking hand drums and rainforest mallet instruments. Subsonic slides give a lazed shape to the groove–as well as a feeling of portending doom–and liquid gurgles join hydraulic machines and their vented puffs of compressed air. Sprays of crystalline vapor are as harsh as they are transfixing, and resonant fog banks quiver while obscuring all sight as gaseous blasts of light spread towards some infinitely distant horizon. At times glowing clouds of tonal mesmerism enter…these golden washes of hovering feedback and oceanic vibration that intermingle with sonar synths and wobbling walls of mutating drone mysterium...and again, the modulars evoke the meditative tones of gongs and temple idiophones. Granular blasts of galactic sound arc across the spectrum, ghostly melodies emerge at times while giving off an oscillatory glow, and towards the end, shimmering clouds of sound flow in, churn in place, then mysteriously disappear.

Kaitlyn Alexander | Couple-ish
Season 2 of Couple-ish premiered this past Saturday on our very own Aria Bauer had a chance to sit down with Kaitlyn Alexander, the writer/actor/creator of the series, to get their thoughts on season 1, the upcoming season, and to see if we couldn’t glean a few small spoilers to hold on to. The trailer alone had us brimming with questions about our favorite "fake" dating couple, some sibling drama, and a new face.
What we heard only made us more excited for the upcoming season, even if this writer did receive some devastating news about her favourite OTP!
netTVnow: The launch of Couple-ish season 2 is in a few days, how are you feeling about everything?
Kaitlyn Alexander: Really nervous and excited. It’s a last second crunch to get everything in on time but I’m super pumped. We’re ready to go.
NTN: Alright, so let’s start with the big question: on a scale of 1 to Gay, where are we sitting?
KA: Oh, we’re at Tegan and Sara attending a concert where they play Come to My Window level of gay.
NTN: So we’re looking good on the gay is what you’re saying?
KA: [laughing] Yeah. We’re good.
NTN: Perfect. So I know that the ending of season 1 left everyone with some questions and some feels, where are we finding our characters as we pick up for season 2?
KA: We’re finding them 3 months after the end of season 1. So they’ve moved apartments and things have changed. Certain people may not be speaking to each other any more. Really, it’s just complicated. There’s a spoiler that we have to dance around so I can’t say much. I will say that things might not have turned out the way people thought they would...
NTN: Was season 2 always the plan or was it something that sprang organically from the success of the first season?
KA: I always planned to do a second season if possible which is why I made that ending [of season 1] so atrocious for everyone. I always wanted to do a season 2, I didn’t know quite where it would go but talking it through with RJ Lackie and Candice Hudson, the other writers, we all fleshed it out and were like ‘oh, this is exactly where it’s headed and it’s going to be great’.
NTN: The process for funding and creating a season 2 can be very different from a season 1, was that your experience?
KA: It was really different in that for season 1, I literally didn’t have anything to show. I had an idea and I was like "if you guys like this idea, please help me make it." This season we had an established audience and we knew what we wanted to do so I wanted to make it very clear that we were upgrading the quality of what we were going to do. I wanted to make sure that this time we had a demo video to show what we were going to do differently. It was just as hard as always, crowdfunding anything is really always difficult, especially because we need to ask for more money this season. Last season I horrendously under-budgeted the season. So this season we said let’s do this and let’s do it right. I think that I can be proud of what we’re coming out with.
NTN: You wear a whole bunch of different hats in this production with writing, acting, and creating, is there any one of those aspects that you’ve really been enjoying as we approach this season?
KA: This might be a surprise and it might not be but this season I took more of a showrunner role and I wrote less. I heavily directed where I wanted each episode to go which was really fun because Candice and RJ brought out stuff in the characters that I don’t think I would have been able to write myself. Taking that showrunner role on was a lot more fun for me than just looking at a page and writing and rewriting lines that I would just have to say over and over again. Writing for yourself is just the worst. Because Dee’s such an asshole, I just want to make them less rude so I don’t have to be so rude!
NTN: Based on the trailer, it looks like Dee and Amy are going to be spending some time at odds this season which is a flip on season one where they were so close at the start.
KA: Yeah, they’re siblings. When you get in a fight with your siblings sometimes it’s much worse than if you got in a fight with anybody else in the world. So they’re real deep. They’re real deep with that sibling frustration.
NTN: So where does that push to include such a strong sibling relationship come from? So often with webseries and media we see the romance side front and center but you guys have done a great job of bringing in that family aspect as well.
KA: To me family is a huge part of my life and I don’t see it often in a lot of media. The shows that I react to strongest have really good sibling relationships like Supergirl with Kara and Alex. So I just wanted to build out more of a dynamic then one person falling into another person. Life is a lot more connected to family for a lot of people so I just really wanted to include that relationship in there.
NTN: In episode 1, we see Dee’s mom a little bit. Did you want to speak to that at all?
KA: Not a lot of people know but Dee’s mom was kind of based off of my mom. My mom is very public with the fact that she did not accept me at first for being nonbinary but she’s come around. Mrs Warson [Dee’s mom] is not foolproof but she is a mom and she does very much care even though she’s made a lot of mistake. I wanted to show that it’s possible for people to grow and learn from their mistakes but that while they’re learning, they’re going to make even more mistakes. So she’s trying but she’s not perfect. I think that’s difficult for Dee and everyone around them to try and navigate this newfound relationship that they’re trying to build.
NTN: Speaking to representation, we’ve seen a really strong presence of female, non binary, and queer voice in the show. Was that an intentional push or something that fell into place as you wrote the characters?
KA: That comes from my need to see more female and non binary voices out there. THis season especially I made a challenge to myself. I wanted to prove that a show could be really strong without having male voices in there. There is only one dude in the entire season and he has one line. That was a choice that was definitely intentional. I don’t think I’ve seen many shows that have just female and nonbinary people in the roles.
NTN: Now that you mention it, I’ve definitely seen shows with all male voices but nothing is coming to mind with a cast like yours.
KA: Yeah. So I just want to see if it was possible and I think we proved that it’s very much possible.
NTN: We’ve talked about siblings but we cannot forget the massive set of love triangles.
KA: [laughs] I don’t know what you’re talking about.
NTN: Yeah, you’ve just got a whole love dodecahedron going on. So what I was wondering was if you were going to complicate that further with the new characters coming in.
KA: Complicate is a strong word. I always set out with a plan of who would end up with who from the beginning of this. It’s probably not going to be what anyone expects it to be and that’s all I can say.
NTN: So lots of shipping opportunities is what I’m getting.
KA: Oh, so much shipping.
NTN: With the new characters, can you tell us anything about them?
KA: Cal is our big new character this season. She works at Dee’s mom’s flower shop and has worked there since she was in high school so she has a very strong connection to Amy and Mrs. Warson. Amy was often at the flower shop but Dee doesn’t really go because they haven’t had a strong relationship with their mom. Dee hasn’t met Cal but Cal has been around the family for a very long time. She’s very well spoken, doesn’t take shit from anyone, is very funny, and is probably my favourite character in the show. I’m excited for people to met her. She’s the only new character. Jamie was around last season in a much smaller capacity but I messed around with her a little season.
NTN: Season 1 put everyone through the feels grinder so after watching this next season, what do you hope that fans come out feeling?
KA: Hopeful and happy. I think that this season is a lot about growth for every single character. I think it’s a lot about finding who you are, what makes you happy, and heading towards that. I want to make some really really positive stuff happen this season. There’s bumps along the way for sure but I think that people will come out being really happy once they’ve watched the entire season. I won’t say they’ll be happy the whole time but they’ll get there.
NTN: Fake dating. I’ve got to touch on it because it’s a trope that I know everybody loves and you’ve used it as a framework for the show. What was the reason for going with that angle and will be seeing more of that side of things in season 2.
KA: There’s definitely more vlogs and I chose to go with fake dating because it’s a trope that I actually love. I’ve read so many fanfictions that are surrounded by that concept. I grew up on them. I wanted to flip the trope on its head a bit. It may be the trope on the outside but it’s definitely not the trope once you dig in.
NTN: So what then would you say is the actual heart of the show?
KA: Oh. That’s difficult.
[sounds of intense thinking]
KA: I think the actual heart of the show is that I wanted to make it as close to real life as possible. Nobody’s perfect and everyone has flaws but those flaws make them human. So I think that the heart is just a bunch of people who have been thrown into a situation and they all have flaws that may not complicate each other but they are what each other have. So it’s about that relationship, about making the most of what they’re given.
NTN: Alright. Final question. So we’ve got the love triangles but I have to ask you about my OTP which is Rachel and her hats. Will they be back?
KA: I’m going to break your heart on this one.
NTN: Oh no!
KA: So little secret is that last season we had hats because we didn’t have time to do hair.
[conversation breaks down in laughter on both ends]
KA: So they’re not back. I’m not sure she actually wears a hat at all this season.
NTN: I mean, you’re breaking my heart but I understand.
KA: I had to do it.

Since you were so kind to accept my challenge, I am now requesting you to take on Mr Tall, Dark, Handsome & Augmented himself! Since your analysis of Aria's personality made me love her even more to the point I am right now sewing myself a 'Aria's my waifu' t-shirt, I believe you will hit this one out of the park, too. And as always, reading anything written by you is a pleasure. P.S. I hope I don't sound like a creepy stalker. I am NOT standing in front of your window... ohhh, oops.
Mmm, yes, Adam Jensen. I really do love his character, for many reasons, and I would say his appearance, no matter how gorgeous he is, is actually ranked relatively far down. Looks fade, but the heart does not. So, here we go!
The traits I found within Adam are compassion, will, loyalty, thoughtful, humble, mild Martyr Complex, emotional, self-repressed, and shortsighted. The lattermost trait isn’t present as much after HR, as he seems to have calmed down a lot and bottles up his emotions far too much. He kind of rages through the entire game. Adam is a very emotional person, but because he doesn’t wear it on his sleeve, a lot of people think he’s stoic. He’s not, he just bottles it all up and lets it out sometimes. Case in point, meeting Megan again, confronting Taggart, a milder example in finding Eliza again, the death of Miller (my goodness, he just looked so distraught, it still hurts), the death of the woman at the start of MD, and so on.
As a result, he’s very self-repressed. He hides away in his apartment all the time, he doesn’t let people get close, he seems afraid of having friends (or a lover) anymore, he shields himself behind those glasses, he doesn’t trust easily (which can be good), and his demeanor can be extremely off-putting, probably on purpose. Considering how highly he’s spoken of in both Sarif Industries and the DPD, it’s highly unlikely he’s always been repressed. I do believe he’s always been a quiet person, but not as detached as he is now.
He puts others before himself to the possible detriment of himself. He could end up in a “no-win scenario” one day, where sacrificing himself would bring the worst outcome. I don’t count the “Stanek vs. Versalife” choice as sadistic enough for what I mean. I do see it as a bit of a flaw - you obviously put others before yourself, but Adam might be willing to destroy himself out of a Martyr or Savior Complex. He was probably suicidal before - who’s to say he wouldn’t be now?
(I mean, he’d broken up with Megan in 2024, and still obviously loved her almost six years later. LET IT GO, Adam)
But about his more positive traits, he’s very, very compassionate. Is he a proponent of the “tough love” approach? Yes. Yes he is. But look at how he acts with Irenka, Melina, Aria (”Don’t give up, Aria. Semper fi.” anyone?), Delara after her sob story, Miller when he’s dying, the Hyron drones (just stands there and sadly touches her, because he do literally nothing else), Eliza (in MD), Megan (ffs Adam stop it)… actually, Adam just has a soft spot for people in distress, and women. Probably because of his mother, but still. But he’s inherently a very kind and loving person, which you can never tell just by looking at him. Refusing to shoot a young teen? Taking care of his mother? Taking care of Michelle Walthers (and then using her name for his alias in TF29)? Comforting Edward Brod in Golem City, and to a slightly lesser extent, Irenka Bauer in the same?
And I would arguably place him in the Gentle Giant category, too. He’s big and tough, fast and hard-hitting, but he also seems like the kind of guy you can sleep on the shoulder of (like Delara) and he wouldn’t even be bothered.
He also has a very strong will, bordering on sheer stubbornness. Whether it’s the NSN thing (which was entirely his idea, and to which Alex more or less said “wtf” to), or Rifleman Bank Station, or six months of recovery after being nearly killed and heavily augmented, or getting through GARM, or whatnot, he’s kind of terrifying in how determined he is. It’s certainly best to keep him on your good side.
Loyal? Yes, definitely. Once he’s your friend, or teammate, or whatnot, you pretty much have him for life (unless you stab him in the back). He didn’t make SWAT commander because he was a douchebag, after all, and everyone at SI didn’t worry about him because he was distant before the attack. Mac doesn’t warm up to him by MD’s end because he showed himself to untrustworthy.
Thoughtful? Yes. He’s constantly thinking, though sometimes he forgets to think before talking, but he always has a lot to say. He’s snarky and talks like the blue collar boy he is (moreso in HR than MD, but that could easily be attributed to what he’s been through and a return to his more introverted roots), but he always has something to say that’s appropriate to the situation. Or he comes up with some creative way to BS his way through. Still, his thoughtful responses are usually the most interesting, and offer a lot of insight. “Captain of the Debate Team” indeed.
Humble… yes. Every time someone offers him praise, he deflects or downplays it. The first example that comes to mind is when Delara remarks that he is so good at gaining people’s trust (”Fade to Black”), and he says “yeah, well, point is…” He is just not used to compliments and probably never learned how to accept them graciously, not helped by a post-augmentation body he’s only in MD really getting used to. He probably still feels a bit vile, since he can hardly say he’s loved or accepted the way he is, so he might not ever be able to be sure how genuine any of them are.
Throw that all together, and you get Adam Jensen, who is this wonderfully complicated character, both superhero and normal guy, who can both take on a small army alone and sit in front of the telly with a bowl of Froot Loops, and both are completely believable. I love it.

@shinbou liked for a starter <3
SURELY Aria should not have drunk that much last night. They had just returned from a mission that could have ended with a little less burnt and bullet riddled body armor. No casualties, but the adrenaline was still high and everyone wanted to celebrate for living to fight another day. Aria knew they shouldn’t have drunk so much, but they can never resist a good time with good company. The contraband alcohol was brought out out by everyone’s favorite supply sergeant that they all lovingly called “Sugar Daddy,” and soon Aria’s one bottle turned to two, then three, then to a whole case.
Long story short, Aria had passed out drunk at some point. Was it while they were all singing? Or during Bauer’s impersonation Commander Morrison? Aria can’t remember. Luckily, someone was nice enough to carry them back to their bed in the barracks, though. So it was nice to wake up in a comfy bed, but it was very uncomfortable for them to wake up with dead weight on their left side. Whoever brought them to bed did not think to take off their prostheses and charge them - Aria doesn’t blame them. It would definitely be awkward to take someone’s prostheses off while they were sleeping.
So, Aria has to wobble around the base with a crutch for most of the morning while their prosthesis were charging. It’s a hassle. With both left leg and arm gone, their weight is all on their right side and it is killing Aria’s shoulder. All the strenuous effort to get to lunch and the pounding headache from their hangover is exactly how Aria wanted to start their day. Out of the corner of their eye though, they see someone just turn into a hallway. Someone strong enough to maybe, possibly, HOPEFULLY, help them to the cafeteria.
