Henry Patrick Clarke RHA (1889-1931) was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator. Born in Dublin, he was a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement.

His work was influenced by both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. His stained glass was particularly informed by the French Symbolist movement.

An ‘Ism’ Overview – Modernism vs. Pop Art

With the eye of an art critic, we have had the opportunity to witness the evolution of art movements and styles over the years. Two movements that have captured the attention of the art world are Modernism and Pop Art. While both movements are recognized for their significant contributions to the art world, they differ significantly in their approach and aesthetic.

Modernism was an artistic movement that emerged in the late 19th century and continued through the early 20th century. It was a reaction against traditional, academic art, and was characterized by a rejection of realistic representation in favour of abstraction, experimentation, and the exploration of new forms and materials. The artists associated with Modernism sought to create a new visual language that was free from the constraints of traditional art.

Pop Art, on the other hand, emerged in the 1950s and was a direct response to the commercialization of popular culture. Pop artists appropriated imagery from mass media and consumer culture, often using techniques such as collage and assemblage to create works that were both visually striking and culturally relevant. The Pop Art movement was a critique of consumerism and capitalism, and its artists sought to expose the ways in which these forces shaped our lives and identities.

While both movements were marked by a spirit of innovation and experimentation, they differ significantly in their approach to form and content. Modernist art emphasized form over content, with artists using abstract shapes, colours, and lines to create works that were self-referential and concerned primarily with the formal qualities of the work. Pop Art, on the other hand, was focused on content over form, with artists using recognizable imagery from popular culture to make social and political commentary.

In terms of aesthetics, Modernist art is often characterized by its minimalist, austere quality. The works of artists such as Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich are known for their use of simple geometric shapes and limited colour palettes, creating a sense of order and harmony. Pop Art, on the other hand, is characterized by its use of bright colours, bold lines, and often humorous or ironic imagery. Artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein created works that were both visually stunning and socially relevant, using the power of mass media to critique the very culture they were a part of.

In conclusion, while both Modernism and Pop Art were marked by a spirit of innovation and experimentation, they differ significantly in their approach to form, content, and aesthetics. Tin Town is an independent multimedia art project created for digital platforms; a thematic collection of art, literature, comics, and music, among other things!

Every addition tells the story of four characters in an industrial yet decaying future, threatened by an imminent catastrophe!

They must embark on a mission to save the world and, most importantly, break free from their old lives in the name of adventure!

What can we say? It's just another story about a group of friends saving the world!

Jen!

Feisty, amiable, and bearer of genuine sincerity. Her bubbly attitude makes her the heart that binds the team together, and her fiery passion makes her someone who always strives for the better! Though it is well said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions...

Ted!

The calm anchor amidst chaos; cordial and serene. His honorable character brings a soothing flow and balance, making him the dependable foundation of the group. Don’t take him for granted, however! He’s not your everyday teddy bear and can really pack a punch!

Ivy!

Decisive and down-to-earth; her low-key nature and spot-on observations make her the master key of the bunch. With an unwavering focus, she keeps her promises to heart and will do anything to see them fully accomplished, although the means taken can be... unconventional.

And... Kev!

A spunky, spirited firecracker that is sure to be your partner-in-crime! Exuding spontaneity everywhere he goes, he's a wildcard among his peers. Even so, he often finds himself stuck in a whirlwind of his own, so he may need a helping hand every now and then.

A little more about Tin Town:

Tin Town arises from a deep dissatisfaction with the current state of society and the life-consuming exhaustion that comes with being part of it.

Tin Town is also a wide compound of various references and interests! Art-wise, it takes heavy inspiration from retro-futurism, which helps further enhance the commentary on industrialization.

In the same way, we draw inspiration from surrealism and op-art, as it forces us to find new, unconventional ways to portray our vision.

More contemporary references include internet projects like Homestuck, which also rely on multimedia storytelling.

Most importantly, Tin Town originates from the love that comes with being human, the feeling that there’s more to life than what it seems to offer, and the experience of fighting in the name of life in a world where everything seems to fall apart.

Academic Style

The academic style appeared in the 1815s, after the napoleon war. It was heavily influenced by the artistic standards of the French Académie des Beaux-Arts, and combined elements of neoclassic and romantic art, two quite different artistic movements. Its production continued into the 20th century but fell out of favour in the newer art movements of the time, the first being the Impressionist movement.

The effect of this movement lead to the restriction of access for women artists, as they were omitted from entering these establishments on the grounds of sensibility, as nudity was commonplace in artwork. However, special arrangements were sometimes made for female students up until the 20th century. (Look at the royal academy of arts page on it!)

In the 16th century, many art academies sprung up. The first academy of art was Accademia delle Arti del Disegno which housed artists such as Michelangelo, Bronzino and later, Artemisia Gentileschi (the first woman to join the academy). Most academies began in Italy, but many eventually sprung up around Europe.

A decade from the development of the first academy, Accademia di San Luca was developed in Rome, which became the model for France's Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture (Later changed to Academie des Beaux-Arts) which opened in 1648.

Development

During the 19th century, the debate between Poussinists and Rubenists revived, with the results being that artists aimed to replicate the line of neoclassicism with the colour of romanticism. This is fully summarized in Historicis from William-Adolphe Bouguereau that a good artist is one that sees colour and line the same. Historicism was another strong Bouguereau that a good artist is styles. It ran from platonic representations to more idealized forms to represe theme, are in abstract and simplified areas. Previously unfashionable rococo style became popular again, with common subjects from that period reigniting popularity once more.

Training

Younger artists usually went through four years of academic training in the École des Beaux-Arts (French art academies). To be accepted into these academies, Students had to pass an exam and carry a letter of reference from a noted professor.

Academies

Academies were considered the foundational building blocks for the development of skills in academic success. There were the nude forms of people and took multiple stages to develop to this method.

Students were first told to study classical sculptures to become familiar with light, contour and shade. This

was considered a crucial step in the development process.

After these drawings were presented for grading, if and only if approved, the young artists moved onto drawing from plaster casts of famous sculptures.

Finally, the last step would be to study from live models.

Painting

Painting wasn't taught in École des Beaux-Arts until after 1863, of which, use of the brush would be introduced after this step.

Criticisms

Realists criticized academic art for its idealistic portrayals of events, often mythical. There was little texture, with surfaces being almost watered down for an ethereal look.

Impressionists had similar points of contention with realism, arguing the high polish the artists gave to their paintings was a filtered lie.

Many of those who criticized the movement, including Claude Monet were originally apart of it themselves.

These works can also be used to make observations on societal interactions between people. They can help provide context when studying groups of people that we don’t know much about.

The Renaissance brought a rise of appreciation for the humanities. Religion was heavily crucial to those living in the Renaissance, yet people began to focus on the human experience in art.

The people commissioning these paintings of ordinary people going about their daily routines were wealthy city-dwellers who likely would have viewed themselves as more important than the lower-class citizens portrayed in these works. Still owning these paintings was a sign of Wealth.

With religious reformation sweeping Europe in the 16th century, the art market turned away from religious scenes and towards scenes of everyday life.
