Bpp how have you been handling chapter2? Do you get bored or lose interest in Bts in hiatus? Do the solo rollouts not bother you? Please be honest I really want to know you true opinion.
***
Hi Anon,
Chapter 2 has been rough for you, hasn’t it? At least, based on your ask it sounds like it’s been. Tangentially, did you enjoy yourself this past weekend?
I’ve said this before, but if you ever feel like it’s a chore to remain plugged into BTS or stan culture, please step back. Don’t feel guilty about detaching if you no longer find joy in it. Move on to another hobby or another group if that’s where you’re at. BTS has fans, don’t worry. Don’t feel any obligation to stick around if Chapter 2 isn’t serving you what you want. You can check back in 2026 when the guys are together, or move beyond them completely.
That said, personally, I wonder how you can even ask me this question. Like, what else has Chapter 2 been but a trip? Lollapalooza, Balming Tiger collab, World Cup, Jungkook’s birthday video for Jimin, Indigo collabs, Set Me Free Pt 2, Promise on Spotify, On The Street, D-DAY tour, Yoonmin live, etc.
It’s been a blast. The music is easily some of the best globally this year and last. To illustrate:
...
The song I just listened to is Baseline by j-hope.
youtube
*
It's like a drug for me.
I don't think you understand.
I get high... off their music. Like, I don't know why you think two years of irregular releases without their full promotion of that music, will change my underlying sentiment. BTS scratches an itch few other artists can reach for me.
[ The sentiment? BTS is one of the best musicians of my generation. They make music that actually slaps. Any day of the week. Any genre they touch. It's prime good music. ]
Let me walk you through my playlist for the last half hour:
J-hope - Baseline
Baseline is the sauciest hiphop joint out of Korea, ever. J-hope is undeniably one of the most skilled and versatile rappers out of Asia. Point. Blank. Period.
RM, Tablo - All Day
RM's vocals in All Day render me a stupid mess. He's sooooooo... he's kinda nasty. I mean, it's big, he's kinda messy with it, but he ultimately knows how to use it, and he knows you know that he knows. All of this I deduced from his articulation and delivery on All Day. Tablo too, that tease, matched Joon's energy seamlessly. No further comment.
youtube
*
RM, Mahalia, Benny Blanco - Closer
Namjoon created a masterpiece with Indigo. It's an atrocity that many people won't admit it. Really. Indigo is the album of 2022 (Hurt by NewJeans being the song of the year, and JITB at Lollapalooza 2022 by j-hope the concert experience of the year.) Closer is an impeccably produced song. I mean it's almost disgusting how smooth the production, arrangement, instrumentation, etc on that song is.
youtube
*
Jimin - Alone
The cold clarity in his lyrics. How raw and honest he is, in such a well produced track... people need to show this song more respect.
youtube
*
RM - Change Pt 2.
The only song that rivals how brilliant and badass this one is, is Set Me Free Pt 2 by Jimin.
youtube
*
Agust D - D-DAY
The entirety of D-DAY album still has me in a vice grip, but something about D-DAY the song, rips to the core. How he manages to slip something rock anthemic into the epic call to arms he made that song into... Yoongi is in a league of one.
youtube
And to drive home the point, listen to him on HUH?!
Agust D, j-hope - HUH?!
Still the best song on the album. Undeniably. I mean, if you don't black out when this song comes on are you even alive? /gen. No matter where I am, what I'm doing, I could be exiting my company's underground garage, loading laundry, whatever... no matter what I'm doing, when this song comes on I feel my brain short circuit. It's like a mental reset. I suddenly feel so alert and primed with tension I could kill a person if I felt like it. The grandmas scared about what rap does to teens... songs like HUH?!, really do flip a switch in people's heads. They're right to worry because that's what the genre, drill - the gritty, ominous, and violent contemporary expression of rap - that's what it's made to do. And Yoongi showed an effortless mastery of it in HUH?!
youtube
*
Agust D - tour medley
I hope people who weren't able to see Agust D in person, were at least able to see him in the livestreamed concerts. Many times since I saw him in California, I've come back to some fancams from his earliest days of the tour. This one by rogrog is a favourite. Yoongi is a master of his craft who loves to show off his virtuosity. And in his D-DAY tour, that's what he does.
youtube
*
j-hope, J. Cole - On The Street
Jung Hoseok just casually produced this timeless classic and dipped to the military. No fuss. No sweat. No excuses. He just did the thing, had J. Cole spit some of the sickest bars of his career on that song, then said, "see you later."
Things like this are why he's my bias.
He's a consummate professional.
youtube
*
Unpopular opinion, but I have no real issues with their solo roll-outs. I'm not unsatisfied with too much and frankly, I'm so greedy for new music I wouldn't mind another cluttered roll-out. I hope Joon's music follows soon after JK's because God knows I'm not sure I can stand the wait much longer. Joon makes a lot of 'BTS-style' music and so whatever he drops will serve as the perfect complement to Seven / JJK1. And Vmin will likely drop new music in the next year as well.
Chapter 2 has been kind of a blast.
That's my "true opinion", Anon.

December 17, 2022 - Black Drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus) Found in much of southern and parts of eastern Asia, these drongos live in open habitats, including farmland, and in villages, suburbs, parks, and gardens. They feed primarily on insects, but also eat small vertebrates, including reptiles, mammals, birds, and fish, as well as nectar, and possibly seeds, often capturing insects flushed by large mammals, other birds, humans ploughing rice fields, and forest fires. Pairs build shallow cup-shaped nests from small twigs, rootlets, grass stems, plant fibers, spiderwebs, horsehair, and other materials, usually in trees. Both parents incubate the clutches of two to five eggs and care for the chicks, sometimes assisted by other adults.

Marc-Andre Fleury’s humor, humbleness and infectious love for hockey run deep
Oct 11, 2022 (x)
VARENNES, Que. — The long driveway is filled to the brim with trucks. Landscapers are there, putting the finishing touches on the new house, and a dock is being put in on this refreshingly breezy July day about 40 minutes southwest of Montreal.
Knowing there’d be no room to squeeze another car into the driveway, Marc-Andre Fleury is outside at the edge of his garage to greet his guest with the friendliness that has long been the signature of the jovial, gregarious man affectionately known throughout the hockey world as “Flower.”
Fleury has a stick in his hand and is fiddling with a foam puck when he spots me zigzagging past the work trucks.
“Welcome,” Fleury says, smiling wide and flashing his perfectly white teeth.
Fleury extends his right hand, then opens the door to his home: “After you.”
“Have you eaten? Can I make you a sandwich?” Fleury, with a French-Canadian accent, asks.
When I politely decline, Fleury says, “How about some water? Natural or sparkling?”
Fleury pours two glasses of San Pellegrino and grabs a peanut butter CLIF bar for himself.
He has just gotten home from a workout. There are still six days remaining on his Minnesota Wild contract after he was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks before last season’s trade deadline. But Fleury is wearing a black Vegas Golden Knights T-shirt, left over from his four-year career there that included a Vezina Trophy and an unexpected trip to the Stanley Cup Final in the organization’s inaugural year.
“Well, it was free,” Fleury, laughing hard, says when explaining the shirt.
He opens a glass door to a back patio, then sits on a wicker couch. He crisscrosses his legs and begins petting his Goldendoodle, Fiston.
“We lost our other Golden at Christmas,” Fleury says. “It was hard on the kids. You know … they’re always there. It’s hard to lose a dog.”
Fleury looks up, takes a deep breath, then a bite of the CLIF bar. He stares through a picture-perfect canopy of green trees and toward the St. Lawrence River 100 yards away. A cargo ship that says “DULUTH, MINNESOTA” is slowly cruising west to east past his property. The ship has navigated all the way from Lake Superior through the Great Lakes and is on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.
“Peaceful, isn’t it?” Fleury says as he massages the neck of a very content Fiston.
Fleury, even at 37 and after 19 NHL seasons, still loves every minute of being a hockey player and is excited about what lies ahead. But at this moment, this is his happy place and he’s contemplating all the possibilities of what’s on that ship, where it has come from and where it may be going.
Europe? Africa? Asia? South America?
“All day, every day, those ships go by,” Fleury says. “Cool, isn’t it?”
When the super-athletic, acrobatic eventual Hall of Famer and the man who kicks off The Athletic’s NHL99 project as the 100th-best player in the NHL’s modern era isn’t stopping pucks, winning games, playing practical jokes on his teammates, hanging with his wife and playing with his three children, this is a glimpse into his life.
On this day, hours before Fleury would decide to forgo free agency and re-sign with the Wild for two years, he is relaxed, downright hospitable and reflective about where he’s come from and what he thinks his NHL legacy will be.
When reminded about his three Stanley Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins, his five All-Star Game appearances, his Vezina and Jennings trophies and the fact that in NHL history only Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy have won more than his 520 regular-season and 92 playoff games, Fleury smiles, blushes and stares once more at the blue St. Lawrence River.
“It’s hard to believe,” he says. “It’s surreal. Those were my heroes.”
Fleury grew up in the small town of Sorel-Tracy, Que. — 50 kilometers from his current home.
Surrounded by cornfields and cattle farms, Fleury lived on one end of a long road. On the other end of the same road was the home of Veronique LaRose, who used to play hockey with Fleury’s younger sister, Marylene.
Fleury has known Veronique since they were in elementary school. At 14 years old, he was so shy he didn’t have the nerve to ask her to be his date at a school dance. He had his sister ask Veronique instead. They went to the dance and really began dating later in their teenage years.
This summer, Marc-Andre and Veronique celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary after being together the 10 years before that.
Their two daughters, 9-year-old Estelle and 7-year-old Scarlett, learned to skate when Dad played in Vegas and are both hockey players. Their 3-year-old son, James, is starting to love hockey for different reasons.
“He loves going to the games because he likes popcorn and eating snacks,” Fleury says, laughing. “I’m like my dad was with me. I don’t push hockey on them. I never will. If they love it, they’ll play.”
Fleury’s dad, Andre, was a hard-working man, a carpenter who built a lot of homes in Sorel-Tracy.
“Every day, long hours,” Fleury says. “Sweating in the summer, freezing in the winter.”
Andre lost his right eye when he was 6 playing hockey. He took a stick to the face in a weekend tournament, “and back then, there was no doctor to treat him over the weekend.”
“But,” Fleury continues, “he loved hockey.”
Andre had a sense of humor about losing his eye. He’d always tell his son to keep his “eye” on the puck, pun intended. And he continued to play hockey, only he moved to right wing so he could see oncoming checkers with his left eye “so he wouldn’t get hammered,” Fleury says, laughing at the thought.
Andre died three years ago at 63 of lung cancer.
What’s so tragic about it, Fleury says, is that Andre “smoked — smoked a lot,” but when his own dad — Fleury’s grandfather — died of lung cancer, he quit cold turkey. Then years later, having not smoked all the while, Andre was diagnosed with the disease that killed his father.
“My dad took me to every practice, all the tournaments, but he never pushed me toward hockey,” Fleury says. “He always told me to just have fun and work hard. In the summer, he didn’t make me play hockey. Soccer, baseball — he was just as happy watching me play. It was good how he never pushed it on me. He just let me fall in love with it naturally.”
Allan Walsh, Fleury’s longtime agent and friend, witnessed how much the loss affected Fleury.
“His dad was very quiet and worked his ass off for his family,” Walsh says. “You could see in his eyes what Andre meant to Marc. When things weren’t going well in hockey, Marc would reach out to his dad and have a conversation, and his dad gave him advice. And it always, always made a difference.”
And then there’s Fleury’s mom, France, who has six siblings. She’s a dental hygienist, which may explain her boy’s great teeth.
“She’s on me all the time about them,” Fleury says. “One time, after I had braces, I did a flip on a trampoline, landed on my teeth and they all caved in. I had to get braces again and she was like, ‘What are you doing to your beautiful teeth?’”
Fleury is one of the friendliest, most affable athletes in hockey. Just watch him in pregame warmups and the way he waves at fans, poses for pictures and allows fans to throw jerseys at him for autographs as he stretches.
He gets all this from his mom, who has the exact same smile as her son.
“My mom is always in a light mood, always happy, smiling, helping people,” Fleury says. “Family is big in my life. Every summer, we have a big party with all my family we don’t get to see a lot during the season.”
Fleury’s sister is two years younger. He says they fought a lot growing up, but when he left at age 14 to play midget and then 15 to go to Cape Breton for major junior, the distance brought his sister and him closer than ever. They missed each other desperately and today are as close as can be.
In fact, any chance they get, Fleury and his sister will go on the ice to play hockey.
“It’s one of my favorite things to do,” Fleury says.
If you know anything about Fleury, you know he’s one of the NHL’s biggest practical jokers.
Nobody is safe.
Former Golden Knights teammate Jonathan Marchessault says the hardest thing is Fleury’s “sneaky about it” then “denies it till he dies.”
He’s been known for cutting laces on skates and hiding in equipment bags.
Dontcha know, payback is best served with 7 rolls of clear tape! 😈
🌸 pranks longtime friend, Sidney Crosby, during the #NHLMediaTour.#mnwild pic.twitter.com/CyPgfmBknI
— Minnesota Wild (@mnwild) September 20, 2022
At the 2022 NHL Media Tour, Fleury got old Penguins teammate Sidney Crosby good by taking seven rolls of tape and binding Crosby’s gear up into a ball. In 2011, Fleury was the ringleader of a famous scheme revealed on “Road to the Winter Classic” when a handful of Penguins veterans played a rookie prank on Mark Letestu and Ben Lovejoy by sneaking into their hotel room while at dinner and removing every piece of furniture and reconfiguring it in the hallway.
“I like hotel rooms,” Fleury says, smiling wryly. “You know, guys go out to dinner, you’ve got some time and you put everything in the hallway or just make a big tornado in there. I like getting in the room and messing with everything.”
Fleury has learned how to manipulate a toilet. He’ll sneak into a teammate’s hotel room, unplug the rubber refill tube in the tank, then just barely position the end of the hose so it’s resting under the lid. Inevitably, when a teammate goes to the bathroom and flushes, he’ll get pummeled with water directly to the stomach.
“And it’s not like a water pistol where it’s one spray,” Walsh says, laughing. “This lasts 20 seconds, and when you’re in an enclosed, tight hotel bathroom, there’s nowhere to go. You can’t go left, right. You can’t get out of the way. The water’s just coming at you and coming at you.”
Before Game 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final, the game in which Fleury made the miraculous game-saving stop on Nicklas Lidstrom in the dying seconds, Fleury went back to the MGM Grand in Detroit after the morning skate. He was trying to take a pregame nap, but in the room next to him, several people were partying. They were loud, drinking and playing music, and the noise caused Fleury to toss and turn for two hours before the most important game of his life.
At 3:45, Fleury put on his suit, but before heading to the team bus, he took a waste basket, filled it with water, leaned it on the door of the room next to him, banged on the door, sprinted down the hallway and, just as he turned the corner, he heard the door open and somebody scream.
Yes, before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, Fleury played an epic prank on a complete stranger in the next room.
“I remember once getting in his car and the entire car is full of giant bags of confetti,” Walsh says. “I had to sit with this massive bag of confetti on my lap that went all the way to the roof. I go, “I’ve got to ask you, what the f— is this?’ And he goes, ‘I have some plans,’ with that big Flower smile.”
In his early days in Pittsburgh, Fleury roomed with Marc Bergevin, one of the league’s biggest pranksters during his playing days. Bergevin once came back to the room at night and placed a book with an enticing title on the nightstand between their beds. The rookie threw the remote control to Bergevin, which was common in the old days. Bergevin went to the bathroom, kept the door ajar and laughed out loud when he heard his roomie scream. Fleury had picked up the book, looking at the front cover, then the back, then opened the book and got the shock of a lifetime.
Literally. Fleury was jolted by the prank book.
“Berge used to do little tricks all the time,” Fleury says. “He taught me well.”
It’s hard to believe the youthful Fleury is 37 years old and 32 victories from passing Roy for second all-time in the regular season.
Walsh remembers June 21, 2003, like it was yesterday.
The night before the draft, Walsh hosted a party with Fleury, his family and his other draft-eligible clients and family members. They had no idea what team would select Fleury.
But on draft day, Walsh received a call with a scoop. The Panthers, three years after acquiring Roberto Luongo at the 2000 draft, were planning to trade the No. 1 overall pick and another pick to the Penguins for the Nos. 3 and 55 picks and winger Mikael Samuelsson. The reason? The Penguins wanted Fleury.
Walsh was meeting Fleury in the lobby of their hotel four blocks from the arena.
“I took Flower aside and told him, ‘I have some information, but I don’t want to ruin in any way this experience for you. So if you want to be surprised, I know where you’re going and I know what team is taking you, but I don’t want to tell you unless you want to know,’” Walsh recalls. “He goes, ‘Tell me, tell me, tell me.’ I said, ‘You sure,” and he yells, ‘F—ing tell me!’
Walsh told him he was going No. 1 overall to the Penguins.
“He looked right through me, like I could actually see the different swirling thoughts going through his mind the whole time,” Walsh says. “He was speechless for 10 seconds. He finally goes, ‘Geeeeeezzzzz.’”
Fleury asked: “What do we do now?”
“I said, ‘For starters, I think we should get our ass to the rink,’” Walsh says.
During that four-block walk, Fleury got bombarded by autograph and photo seekers. It was boiling hot outside. Finally, Walsh put his hand on Fleury’s waist and ushered him along. They got to their seats 10 minutes before the draft started and were soaked with sweat from the sweltering Nashville heat.
“Marc literally had sweat dripping from his forehead and a drenched shirt when his name was called,” Walsh says.
Fleury made the Penguins as an 18-year-old, a huge jump going from major junior to the NHL. Of course, this is the same guy who jumped from bantam AA to major junior.
In his NHL debut, he stopped 46 of 48 shots in a 3-0 loss.
“Those were tough years,” says Ed Olczyk, Fleury’s first coach with the Penguins. “The plan was to rid ourselves of all of our assets — the Robert Langs and Marty Strakas — and build from the draft knowing that we had no goalies coming and no center-icemen. We knew Florida didn’t need a goalie, so Craig (Patrick) moved up to assure we got a guy we all thought we could build from the goal crease out.
“Flower was so infectious. His love of the game, his smile, his personality, his skill level, it was all there under one umbrella.”
But the Penguins were an unstable organization at that point, bleeding money and shuttling Fleury back and forth to the minors or to the 2004 world juniors, then permanently back to Cape Breton so they wouldn’t have to pay his bonuses.
“He was upset and emotional,” Olczyk remembers. “I remember him saying to me with tears in his eyes, ‘I don’t want my bonuses. You can keep them. Just let me stay.’ Those were hard conversations because I wanted him there, too.”
There was a lot of losing in those early years in Pittsburgh. But after drafting Fleury in 2003, the Penguins landed Evgeni Malkin, Crosby and Jordan Staal in the first rounds of the next three drafts.
“Those were three great players to build up the middle with, but at the beginning, we were losing a lot,” Fleury says. “That was hard because you see in the paper the No. 1 pick can’t stop a puck and is losing all the time. That’s when I learned to stop reading the paper, which was tough. All my life, my dad and me, we always got the newspaper and read all the sports in the news.”
But Fleury persevered, began winning games and helped backstop a very special Penguins team to the pinnacle.

“At the end of the day, I just want to win,” Fleury says. “But what I’ve found out over time, when I smile, when I’m having fun, then I play better.”
Like his mom, Fleury may always be smiling, but he’s a fierce competitor. There are so many stories from Pittsburgh about his battles every practice with Crosby. But it’s his fun style on the ice and that off-ice demeanor that has allowed him to galvanize franchise bases — especially in Vegas after he willingly went there as the Golden Knights’ expansion goaltender — and why he’s so popular, so beloved, league-wide.
Just look at last season, when he won his 500th game and recorded his 69th shutout in Montreal. The Canadiens had such a bad season, it quite frankly may have been the highlight of their season when Canadiens fans serenaded Fleury in the final minute by chanting his name.
“I didn’t expect that,” Fleury says. “I mean, I grew up a Habs fan. They were always my favorite team. It was pretty amazing.”
Fleury simply loves playing hockey. It’s why he signed on for two more years with the Wild.
“When you win Cups, it’s something you always chase to do it again,” he says. “I’m just fortunate that I can still do it, to play for this long. Had some injuries, but nothing too devastating. I feel lucky. I feel like I got to do what I love for so long.”
Fleury then leads a tour of his house. In the basement, there are paintings on canvas of some of his proudest moments, as well as posters, years and years of pads and all of his masks — not just from the NHL but also from when he was a kid and in junior. There are also special ones that used to belong to Brodeur and Roy.
He also has keepsakes from his dad, who saved many pictures and newspaper articles highlighting the boy he was so proud of.
“Look at his numbers and the longevity and the success individually, the success of the teams he’s played on — part of three Stanley Cup champions. This is a slam-dunk, no-brainer Hall of Famer,” Olczyk says. “The young man that’s become a man and everything he’s been able to accomplish in the game and in his family speaks for itself. It’s hard not to like and love the guy.”

How many slaves are there today, and who are they?
The word “slavery” conjures up images of shackles and transatlantic ships – depictions that seem relegated firmly to the past. But more people are enslaved today than at any other time in history. Experts have calculated that roughly 13 million people were captured and sold as slaves between the 15th and 19th centuries; today, an estimated 40.3 million people – more than three times the figure during the transatlantic slave trade – are living in some form of modern slavery, according to the latest figures published by the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Walk Free Foundation.
Women and girls comprise 71% of all modern slavery victims. Children make up 25% and account for 10 million of all the slaves worldwide.
What are the slaves being forced to do?
A person today is considered enslaved if they are forced to work against their will; are owned or controlled by an exploiter or “employer”; have limited freedom of movement; or are dehumanised, treated as a commodity or bought and sold as property, according to abolitionist group Anti-Slavery International.
Tumblr media
Of the 24.9 million people trapped in forced labour, the majority (16 million) work in the private sector. Slaves clean houses and flats; produce the clothes we wear; pick the fruit and vegetables we eat; trawl the seas for the shrimp on our restaurant plates; dig for the minerals used in our smartphones, makeup and electric cars; and work on construction jobs building infrastructure for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Another 4.8 million people working in forced labour are estimated to be sexually exploited, while roughly 4.1 million people are in state-sanctioned forced labour, which includes governmental abuse of military conscription and forced construction or agricultural work. In certain countries such as Mauritania, people are born into “hereditary” slavery if their mother was a slave.
Again, women and girls bear the brunt of these statistics, comprising 99% of all victims in the commercial sex industry, and 58% in other sectors, according to the ILO.
Where is this happening?
Statistically, modern slavery is most prevalent in Africa, followed by Asia and the Pacific, according to the Global Slavery Index, which publishes country-by-country rankings on modern slavery figures and government responses to tackle the issues.
But the ILO and Walk Free warn that these figures are likely skewed due to lack of data from key regions. “We believe that the global estimate of 40.3 million is the most reliable data to date, although we believe it to be a conservative estimate as there were millions of people we couldn’t reach in conflict zones or on the refugee trail and places where we couldn’t be sure of collecting robust data such as the Gulf states, where access and language barriers prevented us from reaching the migrant worker communities,” said Michaëlle de Cock, a senior statistician at the ILO.
More than 70% of the 4.8 million sex exploitation victims are in the Asia and Pacific region. Forced marriage is most prevalent in Africa. But there isn’t a single country that isn’t tainted by slavery: 1.5 million victims are living in developed countries, with an estimated 13,000 enslaved here in the UK.
Why are there so many slaves today?
Slavery is big business. Globally, slavery generates as much as $150bn (£116bn) in profits every year, more than one third of which ($46.9bn) is generated in developed countries, including the EU. Whereas slave traders two centuries ago were forced to contend with costly journeys and high mortality rates, modern exploiters have lower overheads thanks to huge advances in technology and transportation. Modern migration flows also mean that a large supply of vulnerable, exploitable people can be tapped into for global supply chains in the agriculture, beauty, fashion and sex industries.
Tumblr media
“It turns out that slavery today is more profitable than I could have imagined,” Kara said. “Profits on a per-slave basis can range from a few thousand dollars to a few hundred thousand dollars a year, with total annual slavery profits estimated to be as high as $150bn.”
It’s important to acknowledge that global population rates also affect estimates: the top 10 countries with the highest estimated absolute number of victims are also some of the most populous. Together, these 10 countries – China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines and Russia – comprise 60% of all the people living in modern slavery, as well as more than half the world’s population, according to the Global Slavery Index.
An increase in violent conflict worldwide over the past 30 years has also inflated the number of people at risk of slavery, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with armed groups and terrorists turning to trafficking “to show they have control over the community, or to increase their force, either recruiting child soldiers or giving sex slaves as a reward for their recruitment”.
What’s the difference between slavery and human trafficking?
Human trafficking is just one way of enslaving someone. Whereas centuries ago it was common for a slave trader to simply buy another human being and “own” that person as their property (which does still happen), today the practice is largely more insidious.
Tumblr media
Many times, the victim is led to believe they have been offered a well-paid job in a different city or country, only to find the job does not exist and they are now indebted to their “employer” or trafficker and must pay transportation, lodging and any other “fees” the exploiter demands, thereby forcing the victim into debt bondage.
For example?
Guardian investigations have revealed a slew of abuses from Qatar to Thailand, India to the United States. Qatar was forced to take action after revelations of abusive practices foisted on migrant workers helping build its infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup.
Trafficking on to fishing boats is still widespread, particularly in south-east and east Asia, where men are lured by the promise of jobs in agriculture or construction, then drugged or beaten and wake up at sea.
Exploitation of migrant workers has also been revealed in Malaysia, Cambodia, China, Italy, Vietnam and the UK.
How does someone end up becoming a slave?
Tumblr media
Or a young girl forced to marry at 13 because climate change has flooded her family’s crops and they can no longer afford to keep her at home. Or a homeless person kidnapped from a London soup kitchen and forced to work on a caravan site. Or a migrant whose visa has expired and can be threatened with deportation if she doesn’t do what the trafficker demands.
Slavery is global but flourishes in places where the rule of law is weak and corruption goes unchecked, says Anti-Slavery International.
Will slavery ever end?
Activists such as Kara believe that slavery can be eradicated for good, but that it would take great political will and considerable research.
First, dedicated investigators would need to identify each level in the often murky supply chains of commodities in order to determine where labour abuses are taking place.
Then, independent certification processes would need to be designed for each commodity, so that consumers could make educated choices about the products they are buying and the slavery or labour abuses implicated with those purchases.
Finally, Kara says, industries would need to invest in the communities whose low-cost labour is being used to make the products. “Doing so would help mitigate vulnerability to being trafficked and exploited,” Kara said. “Consumers may have to pay slightly more for certain goods, and multinational corporations may have to accept slightly lower profits. But a freer and fairer labour environment would promote greater productivity, potentially offsetting some of those expenses.”
What do I do if I think someone is a victim of modern slavery?
According to Anti-Slavery International, slavery is so common that it is possible you come across victims “on a regular basis”. Key things to look out for are whether the person has freedom of movement; appears scared, withdrawn or shows signs of abuse; has few personal belongings or identifying documents with them; or seems under the control of someone else and scared to talk.
If you think someone may tick these boxes, it is best to contact authorities directly instead of approaching the person, as approaching them could put them in danger. In the UK, you can contact the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700, the police, Crimestoppers or groups such as Anti-Slavery International.

The Russian Kopi Luwak
Slavoj Žižek
October 17th, 2022
“Kopi luwak” is the world’s most expensive coffee, and it’s made from poop: from coffee beans that are partially digested and then pooped out by the civet, a catlike creature that lives in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The civet’s digestive enzymes change the structure of proteins in the coffee beans, which removes some of the acidity to make a smoother cup of coffee. It is mostly produced in Indonesia. In the US, a cup of kopi luwak can cost up to $80.[1]
Is today’s new Right populist ideology, in the US as well as in Russia, not precisely a kind of ideological kopi luwak? Old ideas, some of them even respectable (like the critique of financial elites exploiting ordinary people), are processed by today's apes and turned into shit. [...]

My Journey with Para Sport — Tamsin’s Story
Tamsin, an adult with cerebral palsy, tells the story about finding her passion with Para sport
Hi everyone, my name is Tamsin Colley and I’m an elite Cerebral Palsy Footballer! I am also studying Exercise Physiology at the University of New South Wales in the hope of getting better equipped to help other people with disabilities improve their lives through physical activity. I’m highly motivated in both my sport and studies and have received several High Distinctions so far at university. In this blog, I’m going to share some of my journey in Para sport in the hope that it helps someone else with a disability to realise that they too can pursue their sporting dreams.
I was introduced to disability sport at the age of six, just one year after I learned to walk independently. I used a wheelchair and walker for the first five years of my life as a brain tumour that I had removed at 18 months old left me with ataxic cerebral palsy. The first several years of my sporting career were spent competing in para-athletics, as that was one of the main sports available for ambulant people with physical disabilities when I was growing up. I progressed through the school system and was breaking National Primary School Athletics records for my classification by the time I was ten!
When I was fourteen, I became the youngest ever Australian track and field Paralympian by competing in the Rio 2016 Paralympics.
This was a dream come true, and an experience I will never forget! Then in the following years, I won several international medals in the World Juniors, Melanesian Championships, Arafura Games, and Oceania Championships. In 2020, I was honoured to be chosen by Cathy Freeman to re-light the cauldron for the 20-year anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Games.
I had also played football when I was growing up, but there wasn’t a pathway for females with physical disabilities to progress in that sport yet. In 2022, I was so excited to hear about the creation of the ParaMatildas, Australia’s female Cerebral Palsy Football team. It was awesome to see people like me getting opportunities to progress to a high level in football, so it reignited my love for the sport and dream of playing for Australia. I started going to Football NSW Para training sessions and found an inclusive local club Hurlstone Park Wanderers, who are so supportive of me!
Early last year, I was called up to a ParaMatildas training camp, then later I got selected for the ParaMatildas team to compete in the Para Asia Cup. We won the tournament and I even scored four goals. It left me hungry for more, so I ramped-up my training.

How did the 41 workers trapped inside a collapsed Himalayan highway tunnel survive for almost two weeks?
Between 50 and 60 tunnellers were on the overnight shift when a landslide hit the area early on November 12, according to officials at the time.
The tunnel they were building collapsed about 200 meters from the entrance.
Workers near the opening managed to make it out.
Most of the crew were trapped inside a 2km stretch of the tunnel, which is 13m wide and 15m high.
Australian Arnold Dix, a professor of engineering and the president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, is helping to lead the rescue efforts.
"Thousands of tonnes of rock have fallen in part of the tunnel and essentially created a tomb," Professor Dix said.
Fortunately, they have been able to receive essentials to help them survive while they wait for rescue crews to reach them.

Before Arnold Dix saved dozens from an underground tomb, he was a hero during Qatar's 'World Cup of Shame'
Before Arnold Dix was hailed a hero for helping rescue 41 men trapped underground in India, he was already a "silent hero" to thousands of migrant workers forced to live in appalling conditions in Qatar.
ABC TV program Australian Story can reveal the international tunnelling expert from Victoria ran a secret, self-funded humanitarian program in the oil-rich emirate in the lead-up to it hosting football's 2022 World Cup, when ill-treatment of workers from Africa and Asia was rife.
Amnesty International dubbed it the "World Cup of shame".
Dix, a barrister, scientist and professor in engineering, organised aid in Qatar and did it secretly out of fear of reprisals from "a multi-billion-dollar human-trafficking system".

October 26, 2022 - Small Niltava (Niltava macgrigoriae) Found across the Himalayas into southern China and northern Southeast Asia, these Old World flycatchers live in clearings and edges of hill and mountain forests and in grassy areas with some trees. They eat small invertebrates and some fruit, foraging alone or in pairs and capturing insects in short flights from low perches. Breeding from March to August, females build cup-shaped nests from moss in cavities in stream banks, between rocks, or in saplings while males gather materials. Both parents incubate the clutches of three to five eggs.

Sneak Peek | When Stones Move: Journeys of the Tamil Yoginis, June 8, 2023
What happens to stone sculptures in India when they are separated from their original context? Follow the multiple journeys of a group of goddesses called yoginis from their temple, which no longer exists, to a bustling South Indian city and onward to museum collections on three continents. In this richly illustrated talk, Emma Natalya Stein, assistant curator of South Asian and Southeast Asian art, will reveal a recently discovered yogini—not in a museum but in a local Tamil shrine—and give a sneak peek into plans for an exhibition that seeks to reunite this important group of goddesses. This talk is part of the monthly lunchtime series Sneak Peek: New Research from the National Museum of Asian Art, where staff members present brief, personal perspectives and ongoing research, followed by discussion. This year, the series focuses on the theme of journeys—those that works of art depict and those they have undergone—in the collections of the National Museum of Asian Art. Emma Natalya Stein (PhD, Yale) joined the National Museum of Asian Art’s curatorial staff in 2019. Her exhibitions include Revealing Krishna: Journey to Cambodia’s Sacred Mountain, Prehistoric Spirals: Earthenware from Thailand, Power in Southeast Asia, and The Art of Knowing in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas. Emma has published articles on topics including yoginis, temple networks, and water’s edge urbanism, and her monograph, Constructing Kanchi: City of Infinite Temples, was featured on the New Books in Indian Religions podcast (May 2022). Emma’s research is grounded in fieldwork in South Asia and Southeast Asia, where she documents and maps monuments in diverse landscapes. National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian

From 1987: Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, gift of Arthur M. Sackler on September 11, 1987 [7]
Notes:
[1] The Yogini temple, which originally contained at least 14 sculptures, fell out of use sometime in the following centuries. Likely constructed of stone foundations supporting brick walls, no trace of its structure has been identified. See Padma Kaimal, "Scattered goddesses Travels with the Yoginis" [book] (Ann Arbor: Association for Asian Studies, Inc., 2012) and Emma Natalya Stein and Katherine E. Kasdorf, "Alternate Narratives for the Tamil Yoginis: Reconsidering the 'Kanchi Yoginis' Past, Present, and Future" in Religions, vol. 13 (September 2022).
[2] Gabriel Jouveau-Dubreuil was a French-born archeologist who lived in Pondicherry, India. He worked with several Indian agents to source antiquities to export for sale in Europe. N. Tangavelou Pillai, who worked around Kanchi, was Jouveau-Dubreuil's primary agent for Hindu antiquities. Reportedly Jouveau-Dubreuil and Tangavelou discovered this sculpture along with others similar sculptures during a trip to Kanchi in August 1925. Tangavelou collected sixty signatures from individuals who consented to the removal of the sculptures. Despite ongoing objections, Tangavelou believed the majority approved of the removal and sent the sculptures to Pondicherry for export. See Kaimal, p. 33-137 and Stein and Kasdorf, 17.
[3] The dealer C. T. Loo and Jouveau-Dubreuil became acquainted in Paris between 1922 and 1923. Loo proposed that Jouveau-Dubreuil become Loo's scout, supplier, and buying agent in India. It is likely that Loo was not Jouveau-Dubreuil's only patron, see Kaimal, p. 137 and p. 243, note 25. Jouveau-Dubreuil and Tangavelou photographed each recovered sculpture before Jouveau-Dubreuil exported them to France; these photographs are preserved at the Musée Guimet, Paris and in the archives of the Red Pagoda, Paris. See Kaimal, p. 33-137.
Jouveau-Dubreuil and C.T. Loo collaborated closely on the export of the sculptures. The sculptures arrived in Paris via several shipments, the first arriving in the fall of 1926 and the last by July 1927. The correspondence between Loo and Jouveau-Dubreuil suggests this yogini was part of a shipment in January 1926. See Emma Natalya Stein and Katherine E. Kasdorf, "Tracking the Tamil Yoginis: New Findings from the Jouveau-Dubreuil Archives" presentation during webinar "Translocation of South Asian Art: Provenance and Documentation," October 7, 2022, power point in object file.
