So last Sunday, one of the pastors at my church was giving a sermon on David, and this came up...
The pastor: "David killed bears & lions with his bare hands protecting his flock"
My brain:
Tumblr media
Yes, that's immediately where my thoughts went XD
(If anyone doesn't get it - Finrod killed a werewolf with his bare hands and teeth to protect his friend, so that's the connection)
(@aureentuluva70 this reminded me of your post about Eärendil/the Bethlehem star parallels. @thegreenleavesofspring @-ing you bc I think you'd find it funny and you had reblogged aureentuluva's Eärendil post)

Heads Up, Seven Up Game
Tagged by @thescrapwitch and finally getting around to it.
RULES: Post the last 7 sentences that you wrote.
Gil-galad had not meant to make him uncomfortable. This conversation wouldn't go well if he was already defensive.  “But since you've come prepared–” He searched quickly across his desk and found a draft of a letter he composed this morning, edits scribbled in the margins– “you may write this out clearly so I can send it to be copied without the postmaster thinking I've lost my mind.”  The boy took the ink-smudged sheet and set about the task, careful yet eager. The king returned to his seat. Awkwardly he waited for the whisper of quill on paper to stop so that they could move on to the matter at hand. He straightened the accumulated scrolls, compasses and feathers on his desk then picked up the letter again to occupy himself.

Tagged by @afaroffsong to list my ten favourite male characters. ^_^ I had to think about this one for a bit.
Elrohir - A Right Different Tale After All, HollersandHolmes on AO3
Kiernan from the above
Firmus Piett as depicted by such as Malicean, WishfulThinking1978, and frodogenic
Max Veers as depicted by see above
Elrond Peredhel - all media written by Tolkien
Luke Skywalker - original Trilogy and some novelizations
Maedhros Fëanorian - Silmarillion
Aragorn - Lord of the Rings
Pippin - Lord of the Rings
And honestly I'm going to bend the rules on this last one: I am very, very fond of Max Way from Sons of the Star (the rules don't say you can't use your own OC)
And honorable mention goes to Wyatt Cain from Tin Man
Tagging with no pressure: @muse-write @musewrangler @aureentuluva70 and anyone else who wants to join in.

Last, Current, Next Reads
Thanks for the tag @ladylucksrogue!
Last: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I usually reread it about once a year, and I'm also brushing up for when my friend is going to have me watch the 2005 movie adaptation when she comes back up in the fall
Current: The Land of the Green Man by Carolyne Larrington. It's an exploration of the folklore of the British Isles; I'm trying to introduce a little more nonfiction into my reading habits, and this seemed like a good place to start
Next: Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. My mother has been trying to get me to read it and I like P&P enough that I'm willing to give it a shot, even though i'm not typically a big fan of romance
tagging: @thenegoteator, @that-angry-noldo, @aureentuluva70, @frogwynwebber, @byebyeskylark and @prankprincess123
No pressure if you don't want to ofc :]

A poem made sometime during the aftermath of the devestating Nirnaeth Arnoediad or the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, written by an unnamed elven soldier of Hithlum in which he mourns the fall of the Noldorin High King Fingon, who was brutally slain in the battle.
Title taken from the poem "O Captain, my Captain!"

15 Questions 15 Mutuals
Thanks so much for the tag, @raointean!!
1. Are you named after anyone?
Yes, my great-grandma! It’s kind of a cute story actually - my mom isn’t religious but she’s culturally Orthodox Christian, and she told me she figured that between my great-grandma and St Anna (the mother of the Mother of God) I’d turn out ok. :P
2. When was the last time you cried?
Last time I had a proper good cry was when I was home for Christmas, so sometime around the end of December.
3. Do you have kids?
Nope!
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Ish? I do deadpan humor.
5. What's the first thing you notice about people?
Hair and clothes. If I meet somebody new and their hair isn’t super distinctive, I’ll probably struggle to recognize them in a different outfit. Faceblindness! *jazz hands*
6. What's your eye color?
Blue-gray.
7. Scary movies or happy ending?
Happy endings! Although I can do (certain kinds of) scary so long as it does have a happy ending - or at least a meaningful one. Everyone dies and it was all pointless, no; everyone dies but it meant something, yes.
8. Any special talents?
Idk, what counts as a special talent? Ooh, got one - not only can I play Skyrim on a trackpad, last time I tried to play with a mouse I was appreciably worse at it.
9. Where were you born?
The US Midwest.
10. What are your hobbies?
Reading, writing, video games, singing… also I tend to get very into things like knitting for weeks to months at a time, then drop them for a long while, and then the cycle repeats.
11. Have you any pets?
My family has a little dog, but I no longer live at home so I don’t get to see her very often. :( She is the best. She is very small and she has no money so you can imagine the kind of stress that she is under, but she is so so brave about it.
12. What sports do you play/have you played?
None really? I used to ride horseback but that is Expensive so I haven’t for years, and I never really liked showing the few times I tried it.
13. How tall are you?
Five foot four.
14. Favorite subject in school?
Primary, secondary, college? Actually it doesn’t matter, the answer is BOOKS!! regardless. Also creative writing.
15. Dream job?
Maiden aunt.
I refuse to tag 15 entire people (in this economy?!) but hey @qrovidcore, @arofili, @deep-hearts-core, @shadowkat2000, @aureentuluva70, wanna do a thing? No pressure. (And careful not to put down what you’d put for a security question.)

I love that the most prominent trait that Turgon and Finrod have in common is that they physically cannot restrain themselves from assimilating more people into their found families. Leave a child unattended in Turgon’s presence for more than ten minutes? They’re his now, sorry. Made eye contact with Finrod? You’re invited over to his house for dinner on Sundays. They can’t help themselves.

So I was thinking up domestic fluff for the House of Finarfin (as you do), and I have come to the very important conclusion that Finarfin doesn’t do baby talk. He talks to infants as if they are simply small adults. For example:
Finarfin, walking through the library, running his hands over the spines of books, carrying baby Finrod in a sling: If there’s anything you want to read, just let me know.
Finrod: *happy gurgling*
Finarfin, pulling a book off the shelf: Excellent selection
Finarfin, carrying baby Galadriel on the beach
Galadriel: *points and makes interested noises*
Finarfin: Fascinating observation
Finarfin, holding Orodreth in his lap
Orodreth: *insistent babbling*
Finarfin: Interesting opinion. What lead you to that conclusion?
Angrod, listening in from across the room: Dad???

I’ve always had this little headcanon that all the sons of Fëanor have necklaces with Fëanorian stars as pendants. Their father made them for them when they were born. Reminders that they were princes of a mighty line, and should carry themselves with that knowledge. They wear them every day. When Amras dies, Amrod takes it and wears it alongside his own, in memory of his fallen twin. When the three C’s are killed, Maedhros takes theirs before they’re buried, and wears them, too. He takes both from Amrod after his death, as well. And in the end, when he decides he can’t go on any more, he leaves them on the last ledge before the lip of the crater, lined up side by side, one by one, just like they used to be. And when Maglor finds them, he knows he’s found his big brother. Far, far too late. So he picks them up, and he dusts them off, and he puts them on, carrying his brothers with him as he mourns.

My #1 post of 2022
One thing that I find interesting in thinking about the Finwean siblings is that Finrod and Maedhros exhibit pretty clear drives to take care of and protect their siblings (or younger cousins/nephews/other relatives or friends that they’ve adopted). But Fingon. Doesn’t do that. He’s not keeping a close eye on his younger siblings like Maedhros and his siblings aren’t recorded as coming to stay with him or confide in him in times of distress like Finrod. Aredhel doesn’t even visit him when she leaves Gondolin. She goes to see Celegorm and Curufin. Turgon, on the other hand, is pretty much defined by his protective nature (see: the entire concept of Gondolin). He’s the one fighting his way to Fingon’s side and risking everything to help him rather than the other way around. Aredhel goes to him for refuge after leaving Eol. I know that the loss of Argon and Gondolin’s secrecy make things a little more complicated and murky than the Arafinwean and Feanorian sibling relationships, but Fingon was never even noted as noticing that his brother and his followers just started disappearing. Turgon seems to have usurped the role of Eldest Brother in his family and I want to know WHY

Tag game: Tour my bookshelf!
@totally-not-one-of-the-fae, thank you for tagging me!
An estimate of how many physical books I own: I just counted, and I have 772 plus two boxes about 2' x 3' x 18" stuffed full that I didn't bother to drag out and count XD (And I'm pretty sure I have other books scattered throughout other boxes that I missed counting.) So I have over 800 books!
Favorite author: I definitely don't have one favorite author, but some of my favorites are J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Murray N. Rothbard, Socrates, Richard J. Maybury, and Chuck Black
A popular book I've never read and never intend to read: Mine is likely also the Harry Potter series, though I may re-read it at some point (if I have nothing else to read or do, which will likely be...never XD)
A popular book I thought was just meh: I don't really pay attention to the popularity of books, so I'm not sure what books I've read are popular, and I also don't remember the names of books that I think are neither good nor bad, so I can't really answer this question.
Longest book I own: Based purely on page number, which varies depending upon the size of the books and page thickness, the longest book I own is The MacArthur Study Bible at 2,247 pages. After comes another Bible and then The Complete Works of Shakespeare.
Longest series I own all the books to: Probably The Chronicles of Narnia
Prettiest book I own: The Barnes and Noble edition of The Prince by Niccoló Machiavelli; it is black, gold, and silver with gilded edges and I find it both beautiful and stately. Actually, here's photos of it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A book or series I wish more people knew about: Oh, there are so many good ones! If we're sticking to fiction, I would probably say Ranger's Apprentice, The Knights of Arrethtrae, or The Silmarillion (though I'm not sure how well-known those are). They are really good books and series that I enjoy and are on my re-read list, which is carefully curated to only my absolute favorites. If we're discussing non-fiction, I would say Whatever Happened to Justice? by Richard J. Maybury (this is an interesting look at justice and the legal system in non-technical terms), The Amazing Dr. Ransom's Bestiary of Adorable Fallacies by Douglas Wilson & N. D. Wilson (a hilarious and informative book on the different kinds of informal logical fallacies), and Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt (an informative introduction to economics in non-technical terms).
Book I'm reading now: Most recently, The Silmarillion, though I am currently reading several books.
Book that's been on my TBR list for a while but I still haven't got around to it:
Again, there are so many on this list! However, the one I'm planning to read next is The Lord of the Rings.
Do you have any books in a language other than English: Yes, even though I can't read them...yet! From what I can remember, I own two books in German, two in Spanish, and one in Korean.
And lastly, paperback, hardcover or ebook? I generally prefer hardback because they are sturdier and from what I've seen are usually prettier; however they are also more expensive and heavier, so I only buy hardback books when the book is a favorite of mine and I'm planning on re-reading it.

by aureentuluva70
"The Eithel Nínui, also called the Fountain of Tinúviel, was a fountain found on the plain of Tumladen. It is said to have been created by the tears of Lúthien falling down on the plain when she and Beren were flown over it by Thorondor and his vassals. Its water was recounted in song as having had healing powers until it was destroyed in the Fall of Gondolin."
