What makes bots in MMOs so difficult to remove? From a player's perspective, they're easy to identify. Is there a way for something to detect them and remove them automatically?
Bots are easy for humans to identify, because humans are thinking and reasoning creatures who are very very good at identifying patterns. Bots are actually kind of difficult for automation to identify, because computers are not good at rational thought or reasoning. We need layers of redundancy before we can really determine whether a player is a bot, because bot accounts are typically easy to create and false positive bot identification (i.e. bot-like players) are terrible for us as service providers. We do periodically sweep our games for bots and remove them, but it takes time to build a case against each account because we want to avoid banning an actual player.
Tumblr media
The biggest problem with bots comes from the nature of account creation and new bots being created en masse. Most MMOGs are free to play now, because they all need new players and converting a free player to a paying player is a lot cheaper than persuading a viewer to buy the game without playing it first. This creates a problem, because bot owners can create as many new accounts as they want. Losing existing bot accounts to bans doesn't actually bother them that much - banning a bot account is kind of meaningless if the bad actors can create another account in seconds and have another functional farming character within minutes or hours.
Tumblr media
This means the developers need to combat things with automated restrictions at the account level that don’t meaningfully affect real players, but do affect bot throughput. This can include automated observation and detection, but can also mean things like adding small delays between character creation choices to slow down the process, restrictions on naming characters, and so on. We can even add more restrictions to the free accounts, like currency and inventory maximums that relax over time or with a purchase/subscription, limitations on player-to-player trading for new accounts, and so on. If we can make it more difficult for botters to do what they want, they are a lot less productive and it hurts the gold farmer’s overall bottom line a lot more than banning bots that can be replaced within hours.

So, I made a tool to stop AI from stealing from writers
So seeing this post really inspired me in order to make a tool that writers could use in order to make it unreadable to AI.
And it works! You can try out the online demo, and view all of the code that runs it here!
It does more than just mangle text though! It's also able to invisibly hide author and copyright info, so that you can have definitive proof that someone's stealing your works if they're doing a simple copy and paste!
Below is an example of Scrawl in action!
[Text reads "To humans, this text looks normal, but to computers, it's unreadable!"]
Of course, this "Anti-AI" mode comes with some pretty serious accessibility issues, like breaking screen readers and other TTS software, but there's no real way to make text readable to one AI but not to another AI.
If you're okay with it, you can always have Anti-AI mode off, which will make it so that AIs can understand your text while embedding invisible characters to save your copyright information! (as long as the website you're posting on doesn't remove those characters!)
But, the Anti-AI mode is pretty cool.

The Paradox of Automation
Tumblr media
“The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the way we work and interact with machines — and people — in the workplace. The surge in remote working brought on by the pandemic has magnified the need for unmanned work operations. More automation, however, does not always make the workplace more efficient. ...The paradox of automation — also known as the paradox of technology — occurs when introducing automated system will add to, not reduce, the workload and responsibilities of the human operator. This is because automated systems often require more knowledge, human supervision and intervention from the human operator whenever something goes wrong.”
“A solution to this is developing systems that help automate manually intensive operations, as well as account for known boundaries in human cognition like the inability to multi-task effectively or sustain attention on a given task for long periods of times. Like many other innovations borne out of challenging times in human history, the push for more automation and tele-operation triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic must come with the promise of more efficient and safer workplace operations. But instead of fully and solely relying on what’s technologically possible, system developers must put human beings at the centre of designing automation instead of relegating them to its periphery.”
The Conversation, February 7, 2021: “COVID-19 has fuelled automation — but human involvement is still essential,” by Francesco Biondi
Responding to Automation in Canadian Industries
“Key Findings:
A combination of industry-specific trends and attitudes is shaping how Canadian organizations adopt automation. Some common influences include the following:
digital applications are becoming common;
mobile devices are changing the way employees work;
organizations are increasingly experimenting with automation.
Most managers feel confident about how open their organizations are to adopting new technologies. But they feel less prepared to take full advantage of the potential benefits. These managers are also less confident about compatibility issues with existing technologies.
The majority of frontline workers feel they have at least some of the resources, skills, and support they need to adopt new high-tech tools and processes. However, nearly one-third reported not feeling any pressure to upgrade their skills.
Some key barriers deter companies and organizations from investing in new technologies. These include:
reactive responses toward new technologies, rather than proactive;
inadequate workforce know-how for operating new technologies due to labour shortages;
insufficient testing opportunities;
inconsistent regulations within their industries.
In the coming years, employees will need the right technical skills and complementary social and emotional skills to meet emerging trends head-on.”
