Arta Nova Aveiro
Tumblr media
It's dubbed the Venice of Portugal, and you could truly live out your cruising of the canal in a moliceiro dreams.
Tumblr media
Originally used for pulling algae out of the lagoon, these colorfully painted boats, called moliceiro, now line canals waiting to be filled with tourists. My hostel even offered a steeply discounted ride in one, but 1) I had flamingoes to stalk down, 2) I had an art nouveau scavenger hunt to do, and 3) I still had a whole 'nother city to explore which meant extra time for boat riding didn't exist. Plus...I feel I don't appreciate the river cruise properly when I'm just quickly visiting a city. I'd much rather hit the streets and explore the little corners than sit on a boat and see it from afar.
An art nouveau scavenger hunt for example. That wins over a boat trip any day.
Tumblr media
Restaurante Ferro R. do Ten. Rezende 30
Like many buildings on my tour, Restaurante Ferro is the work of Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha. Da Silva Rocha was never trained as an architect; he was a professor at a design school, but he is known for his contributions to the art nouveau movement in the early 20th century. The façade of the Restaurant Ferro is adorned with intricate wrought ironwork, floral motifs, and asymmetrical designs, characteristic of the movement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Museu de Arte Nova R. Dr. Barbosa de Magalhães 9-11
Boasting a front and back façade, the Museum de Arte Nova was originally designed for businessman Major Pessoa. Many of the art nouveau buildings in Aveiro were created for the rich to flaunt their wealth. Today, the museum stands as a testament to da Silva Rocha's commitment to the innovative and ornamental aspects of the movement, featuring intricate detailing, organic forms, and the signature sinuous lines associated with art nouveau.
Tumblr media
Aveiro City Museum (left), Turismo Centro de Portugal (center), and the Former Cooperativa Agrícola (right) R. João Mendonça 6-9
Unfortunately the Rossio Waterfront was under construction during my visit, inhibiting my viewing abilities of this art nouveau trifecta along the river. With its red accents, the City Museum boasts palm fronds in the ironwork on the first floor balcony as well as detailed motifs on the façade. The former Agricultural Cooperative in contrast has a façade almost entirely covered with coral-hued, hand-painted azulejos of lilies. Closer inspection of all three would have been ideal, but the tiny sidewalk did not allow for pausing which meant the only good angle was from all the way across the river.
Tumblr media
Casa dos Ovos Moles R. João Mendonça 25
Continuing along Aveiro’s main waterfront, a pink façade comes into view. Attributed to José de Pinho, the architecture has several nods to trends of the times: an arched gable window at the top referencing the Japanese influence on art nouveau; “Mackintosh style” windows on the first floor, consisting of different sized rectangles throughout the panes; and floral ironwork on the balcony and windows. The best part: you can stop inside to try out ovos moles, the famous Aveiro egg sweet treat.
Tumblr media
Ergovisão Aveiro R. de Coimbra 1
This corner storefront has two unique façades for passerby to enjoy. The side I captured has the more voluminous decorations around the windows. Those on the other side are still detailed floral motifs, but are flush on the wall. Even the street name (left, under the first floor window) is a relief rather than tile added to the façade at a later date.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Parque Infante Dom Pedro
The largest green space in the city, Parque Infante Dom Pedro was renovated in the early 20th century at the height of the art nouveau movement. The gazebo has intricate, musically inspired ironwork and has held many concerts throughout its history.
Tumblr media
Cais À Porta Cais das Falcoeiras 6
This gorgeous tiled house was not on my original list. I just happened upon it while walking along the canals on the way back from the lagoon. The azulejos have a nautical theme complete with stylized seaweed while the windows are various anchor shapes: the top center is an upside down anchor while the middle side windows are square anchor shapes.
These are just a small example of the art nouveau influence on Aveiro. The Museu de Arte Nova has a list of 28 different buildings around the city that all boast various art nouveau elements. Once again, I just did not plan enough time for a visit to Aveiro to find them all.

Sunday, May 8 - Aveiro
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had no set agenda today, so we did a bit of wandering. We first headed out towards the salt ponds just northwest of our place. They occupy an area between the highway and the Barra Canal, which was built to link Aveiro proper with the sea. Originally Aveiro was a seaport but a storm in the 1570's blocked access so the Barra Canal was built in 1808. For part of the way there is a nice pedestrian and bike path, and the canal itself was full of kayakers this morning - there is a boating club with a building and pier along the way.
The salt pans are quite interesting - they have lots of interpretation signs in the first set of ponds which explain the process, and the flats further on are well taken care of (and sell all sorts of salts). It was a great spot to bird, as there were lots of little wading birds, along with Little Terns and Stilts. Further on there was a lagoon with flamingos, which was totally unexpected. Here they are pretty creamy white with just a touch of pink on their backs - they are obviously not eating much shrimp.
There were lots of folks out walking, jogging, and biking as it was another beautiful day. The area we saw was only one of five separate areas for mining salt - it is amazing to me that it is still an ongoing practice. All over town we have seen tiles depicting the salt harvesting process - it is interesting that it proceeds in much the same way as in the past, with hoe like rakes, and ponds that are flooded sequentially.
We wandered back into the Rossio area, which is the older part of town, and found a cute little place for lunch. We have learned to wait until about 2:30 for lunch, as the rush is mostly over, but the cafes are still open. I'm sure it's a bit quieter on weekdays, but there seems to be a lot of folks in town for the Tunas Festival, which we now know was this weekend. Our group from yesterday had moved on from their place in the square and seemed to be settling in for an afternoon of beer drinking, rather than music. We have no idea whether there were performances last night, or the more informal gathering of yesterday, but we saw more groups today.
We walked down to the end of the main canal where there is a turning basin, and a large brick building which is a former ceramics factory and now a city conference and cultural center. Many of the tour boats go that far and then make a large loop before heading back. There aren't a lot of canals in the "Venice of Portugal", but the boats seem to take advantage of every one on them. The one in front of our place isn't wide, but is quite long and very straight, and was used for training Olympic rowing teams.
We headed from there to the train station, which after falling into disrepair, has been renovated and is now a space for exhibits, including one featuring local wines. The actual train station activity takes place in a much more modern building nearby. The tile pictures on the station show local life, such as harvesting salt, but also nearby attractions one can reach by rail.
There was a lot of activity in the open air mall along the main canal. Someone has promoted the idea of selling ribbons that one can write messages on and attach to the bridges - it actually makes them quite colorful, and seems a better idea than all the locks that folks seem to put on other bridges in Europe. Some have names of couples but many just say things like "paz e amor", which needs no translation. There is a great disbelief here that there is war in Europe, and we have seen many signs urging peace and solidarity with Ukraine. That said, the ribbons are also easier to remove. Across the top of the shopping street were more colorful ribbons - they provided a little shade and a lot of visual interest. We loved the little ice cream van, which was doing brisk business.
This little city seems to have found a good compromise between local interests and tourism. While many of the people in the Rossio area and the boats were tourists, most strolling along the canal further up, in the parks, and along the Barra Canal this morning were locals. And while there are lots of places that need some attention, there are also many neighborhoods with large newer apartment complexes and lots of restaurants and stores, as well as a vibrant banking and shopping area.
We are planning to get our Covid test tomorrow at a pharmacy we have already checked out, and then head to the beach towns just west of here before turning south to Lisbon. We have enjoyed not having a strict agenda here, and being able to wander and discover places organically. It's been a nice way to end our trip around Portugal.

Edifício S.Roque Apartments in Aveiro
6 Nov 2021
Architects: Sónia Cruz – Arquitectura
Location: Aveiro, Portugal
Edifício S.Roque
The S.Roque Building, appears in an expectant and expanding area of the city of Aveiro. Its location is marked by the proximity of one of the channels of the Ria de Aveiro – Canal de S.Roque, which constitutes a local symbol possible to enjoy on walks, sports and leisure.
This recently urbanized area, is now characterized by recent interventions and unrelated to local characteristics.
In this perspective, the building seeks to establish a neutral dialogue with the surroundings, expressing a clean and technical language.
Part of a allotment, the construction was conditioned by the areas and urban parameters established there, presenting a basement for parking and 5 floors for housing. The typologies present are 3T2, 5 T3 and 1T3, responding to common housing programs, aimed at families.
The challenge of the building came from the need for regulatory compliance and the desire to qualitatively score the place. The glazed balconies, allow the enjoyment of the place, and its environment, becoming exterior extensions of the housing compartments.
The interiors express a simple but qualified language, which is neutral to any aesthetic standard and type of living. The materials present come from local suppliers, responding to superior quality standards, in a coherent and harmonious image among all.
The building and its interiors respond affirmatively to the expectations of contemporary living, valuing the relationship between the interior and the exterior of the construction, and qualifying the relationship between surrounding constructions.

Aveiro is a beautiful town with lots of canals, colorful architecture and great seafood, but it’s not going to fit into next year’s group tour, unfortunately. Portugal has so many wonderful things to see and do that it’s very difficult to choose between them all. That said, perhaps it will fit on the Portugal 2.0 trip down the road, we’ll have to see. #portugal #aveiro #canals (at Aveiro, Portugal)

Friday, May 6 - Guimaraes to Aveiro
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Took the toll roads rather than the small rural road's that we prefer since we are now in a more populated area, and slowing down to 30 kph for each town would have taken us all day. We were able to check in to our apartment a bit early, after a fairly arduous search for parking. There is a huge linear parking lot across the canal from our place, but it was completely filled on a beautiful Friday afternoon. We finally did find a place not much further away in an area used by "caravans" - basically free RV parking.
Aveiro is on the coast and is known for its canals, which criss-cross the older section of town and have become a tourist attraction. Former fishing boats with high prows have been repurposed to take people on boat tours. We have a canal in front of our place and can watch them go by - some are fairly plain, and visitors just seem to sit and watch the scenery go by, while most are highly decorated and have guides giving talks.
Some of the prows are painted with saints or religious symbols, but most have cartoons that are quite sexual (and sexist) in nature. My favorite was this "sexy nurse" one, although there were others that were even more explicit.
This little city also has a lot of very nice tile work on buildings - in many ways nicer than Lisbon. Once again, in the past we saw a lot of saints represented - while this one building had mostly half-naked nymphs. Next to a very traditional tile building was also this one with a modern tile layout. There is also a nice outdoor shopping mall, with a paving stone inlay of a huge compass rose. I also couldn't resist taking more pictures of some of the narrow sidewalks in black and white paving patterns, something we didn't see up north.
At the end of our block one short canal comes into our longer one, and connecting walkways (and the parking area) is this wonderful circular bridge. It has stairs and ramps in all directions. We have three nights here, so we can visit the beach towns one day and explore more of Aveiro another, and also get our luggage reorganized for the trip home. We did manage to get most of our stuff out of the car so we can pack it, leave it here (olive oil, extra non-perishable food), or throw it out (my little umbrella that will not close nor stay open). Monday we drive to Lisbon to drop off our car and get ready to fly out on Tuesday.
