movie diary
I really never have time/energy to watch new movies, but I'm gonna make an effort over winter break. I compiled this list from a couple of best of 2022 film selections. My list (and why they caught my interest):
Glass Onion (Knives Out 2, Janelle Monae)
Tár (woman composer)
Bros (gay)
Enola Holmes 2 (first one was good)
Nanny (black horror that isn't exploitative)
The Banshees of Inisherin (Irish; wild trailer)
No Bears (Iranian, from a filmmaker currently imprisoned amidst recent protests)
The Eternal Daughter (haunted house, Tilda Swinton)
Benediction (WW1, poet)
Decision to Leave (Korean, cop falls in love with suspect)
Kimi (fembots I think)
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (everyone says it's good)

A Man Called Ove: Book Review #1
There are a total of four books that I began in December of 2022, all of which remain unfinished for the moment, put aside for one book in particular. The only reason for that being is that I saw a trailer for A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks and thought 'huh, that looks vaguely familiar'. It was then that I remembered picking up a certain book at Savers earlier in the year on impulse that currently sat, unread, amongst a bunch of other unread books on my fairly new IKEA bookcase that is already filled to the brim.
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman made its way onto my TBR for two reasons and two reasons only:
It was going to make me cry, allegedly.
The main character is a grumpy, lonely, old man who learns to love life again (allegedly).
(Full review under the READ MORE. Spoilers marked as such.)
Tumblr media
(The cat on the cover also got me, but I digress)
Anyone who knows me in my daily life knows that this is my absolute weakness. Do I know why I love grumpy old men so much? No. Sometimes I suspect it has to do with the fact that both me and my parents were on the same wavelength at one point about the movie Up.
A condensed version of this for people who are interested in this book would be-
The writing was easy and enjoyable. The author has a way of writing Ove that is blunt and to the point, very much like his character. I have a nasty habit of not entirely looking up any sort of warnings about books before going in, because I am the type of person who mainly gets bothered/triggered by visual media instead of that which I am reading. For those going into this book though I would warn strongly that suicide is the main focus of this book. If that is upsetting to you then I suggest you skip this book entirely or be heavily forewarned going in. Also I should be warning against cancer, major accidents, child-loss, and character death.
The main character, Ove, is also very much, as it is stated, a very grumpy and old-fashioned old man. This book is riddled with the horrors of dealing with stubborn old people in retail, homophobic language, racist language, fatphobic language etc. Anything horrible you can think of an old person saying off the cuff is in it-- BUT-- in my own opinion-- it is done well. It is done in an intentional way to show that Ove, though old fashioned and a bit of an asshole, is not a bad character. He does actually care, or learn to care in his own way. His language is a reflection of his life up to a certain point.
We will now enter the part of my review that is riddled with spoilers. You have been warned.
As was mentioned before, suicide is the main focus of this book. Though the main character is not successful, there are many MANY attempts riddled throughout. All of which are interrupted either comedic or otherwise. Ove, struggling with the loss of his wife to cancer and the only person who he feels understood him in this world, has decided that he will join her. Through seeing Ove's day to day you also get flashbacks to his life with Sonja. The two are written to be opposites in every single way, and it is very endearing. Where Ove is blunt, straightforward, and logical Sonja is sweet, poetic, and imaginative. She reads excessively and he builds her bookcases, that is the easiest way I can sum it up that made my heart truly melt.
In order to not truly spoil some of the stuff in the spoiler ridden section of my review I will leave Ove's relationship with the neighbors that move in across from him mostly untouched. It is, also, a huge part of this book, but the slow build of it and the heartwarming ending is something I think is best experienced should you read this portion and decide to dive into this book yourself. It builds on a relationship that I, personally, haven't really seen in media yet (much let alone books, but maybe there are ones out there that I just haven't found yet.)
Honestly, just think Russel and Mr. Fredrickson, but...grown up and Russel is a pregnant lady. I know, I know- just trust me.
Throughout the course of this book, Ove rekindles old relationships, builds new ones, gets the neighborhood to view him differently than they once have, adopts a cat, and also lets a young man who gets kicked out by his father for being gay come and stay with him in his house. Every page had something else on it that either made me laugh, cry, or just flat out shake my head.
END SPOILER SECTION
According to my Storygraph I began this book on the 5th of January and finished it on the 21st. For someone who is currently stuck in a little bit of a reading rut I am counting 17 days to finish a book as a complete win.
For my first book of 2023 I found this one leaving me hopeful. Even though this was a bit of a heavier read for me to start my year it didn't leave me feeling sad. As someone who has recently experienced loss and my own intense struggles with depression and feeling misunderstood this hit right to the core. Sometimes, books don't fully affect me aside from an intense focus and lingering obsession with the world- but since this was grounded in reality and not fantasy it did hit me in a way I didn't fully expect. I truly loved it, though I can see why other's would not. The rest is up for you to decide.

The Mosley Review: Worst Films of 2022
Tumblr media
Well ladies and gentlemen, 2022 has come to an end. Luckily, this year of cinema hasn't had too many pitfalls in quality that infuriated me. Actually, I take that back. There was a few films that truly disappointed me, pissed me off and 1 film that I absolutely despised. That's right people, its time for my pick for the worst films of 2022. Now you may not agree with me on some of them and that's okay. All film is subjective and you can have your opinions, but these are mine. If you want a more detailed review of each film listed, then simply click the title of each film. So, lets get this over.
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness: I wouldn't say this was the worst of the year, but more of a disappointment.  I happened to like that this was basically an Evil Dead version of the titular character, but I thought it was so inconsistent and lackluster in so many ways. If your gonna have a horror vibe then go all the way and get creepy with it. This film also introduced a new MCU character in the absolute worst way. America Chavez was absolutely useless for the majority of the film even though she has a decent backstory. The last fight in the film was just so bad and the story could've been over in 5 minutes with some simple logic. I wish this had tied into the animated series "What if?" in some sort of way. At least that Doctor Strange arc was more compelling than this.
Tumblr media
Black Adam: I love DC. It is my comic book home over Marvel anyday and their heroes are just as important as their villains and anti heroes. When "Shazam!" was a success, it was only a matter of time before we were gonna get his darker counter part and I was excited until I saw the trailer. I knew something was off and I was right. I don't mind when a character's origin is altered a bit to fit with the times, but this was the most bland version ever. Dwayne Johnson can deliver a decent performance when he is challenged and he wasn't challenged at all in this film. This was one of his worst performances as he just delivers emotionless dialogue and floats around for the majority of the film with no sense of character development. The Justice Society of America was just slapped in for no reason and most of the team aside from Hawkman and Dr. Fate weren’t worthy of their names. Hey Black Adam, 2012 called. They want their villain plot and their shitty CGI back. It’s truly sad when the most memorable thing anyone will ever talk about is the post credit scene as being the best part of the film. You deserved better Henry Cavill.
Tumblr media
Jurassic World: Dominion: Oh how this franchise has fallen so hard. It had a good, nostalgic and fun beginning that could've led to an amazing finale. What I was hoping to see is an actual world that's over run with dinosaurs. There was a short film released before the film called "Battle at Big Rock" and in that short you got a taste of what the film should’ve been. It had dinosaurs showing up in a camp site and wreaking havoc. It was tense and somewhat violent and everything that Dr. Ian Malcolm described it would be. What we got with this entry was a film about genetically enhanced locusts destroying crops. What the hell does that have to do with the dinosaurs you say? Nothing. How can you call yourself a Jurassic film when the dinosaurs aren't even the star of the film? Don't even get me started on legacy characters popping back up on screen just to have nothing to do but scream and get thrown around. What a disgrace to the franchise name.
Tumblr media
Morbius: Do I need to really say anything about this dumpster fire of a movie? Visually the film was okay looking and I liked the ferocity of the character, but man was the rest of the film just horrible. This really didn't do anything to capture even the essence of the famous comic anti hero. This was just another day in the life of Jared Leto to be honest. The plot of the film was so bland, obvious and not even compelling enough to have a sense of fun. The only person I think was having fun as he just went for it in every scene, was Matt Smith. Listen Sony, I know you hold or have bought up all the rights to Spider-Man and all of his rogues, but for the love of all things holy, STOP making comic book movies like these. Outside of the Miles Morales animated films, you have consistently tainted each character with piss poor writing and god awful attempts to connect it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You even tried it here and it doesn't even make any sense! I hope you loose all the rights in the future so that the people over seeing the MCU can properly take care of these beloved characters. UGH!
And now we've come to it. The film that I consider to be the absolute worst of 2022 and the one film I hated the most is………..
Tumblr media
Thor: Love and Thunder: If there's any character in the MCU that has had a full life experience and has become complete by Avengers: Endgame, its Thor. He is my favorite character of the MCU and it makes me so sick to my stomach to see what Kevin Feige and team have allowed Taika Waititi to do to him. Ragnarok was not the epic that it should've been, but it was tolerable once the Russo Brothers fixed the problems plaguing the character from that film. The character was ripped away from progress by Taika and tossed back into his "finding myself" story AGAIN when he already knew who he was! The constant usage of many OUTDATED memes including the stupid screaming goats, was so painful to witness. There was no sense of danger, no sense of compassion, no sense of urgency from any of the heroes. Jane Foster was given a story that could've been so heart wrenching, but it was met with god awful humor and didn't give the powerhouse dramatic actor that Natalie Portman is, anything to work with. Christian Bale was the best part of the film and he only got to shine in maybe 3 scenes that truly defined what this film should've been. This was an SNL sketch that was stretched too far and completely destroys any hope of saving the titular character for the future. When the news came that Taika wasn't gonna do anymore of these films, I rejoiced even though the massive damage had already been done. I truly and deeply hate this dog shit of a movie and in my opinion, it currently holds the number 1 spot of being the worst MCU film ever made.
And there it is ladies and gents! That is my list of the shiniest turds Hollywood crapped out in 2022. 2023 has already started and I hope that this year brings an even shorter list of stinkers. If you hated these films or liked my thoughts on them, let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Finally! The second installment of Doctor Strange is out and fans (like myself) couldn’t wait anymore. So… out of respect for the cast and crew and all the people involved in this movie and of course the fans who have not seen yet; this review will be spoiler free 😊 not going to be easy but I’ll do my best 😅🙈
Tumblr media
This movie « Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness » is as many of the actors have called it « a continuation of some of the character’s stories » which is true. On one hand you have Stephen Strange who is facing a new challenge with the multiverse - after all he had already touched the multiverse in Spider-Man No Way Home. On the other hand you have Wanda Maximoff whose story continues after the events from Westview (i.e WandaVision). I would say this movie is basically asking the question we all want to know: who is the strongest between the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange?… now I have my preference but don’t want to give too much away 😉
Tumblr media
The movie has introduced us to a new character: America Chavez - a sixteen year old girl who can travel to any univers by opening a portal in the shape of a star. In the movie she seeks help from Doctor Strange because she’s being chased by demons… Portrayed by the incredible Xochitl Gomez, this character was a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and her story arc fitted perfectly with the continuation of the franchise that is the MCU.
Tumblr media
There is one thing I was pretty excited about this movie is the fact that it was directed by Sam Raimi - the genius that gave us the first Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire. Of course it was mentioned before the movie came out that it might be darker than other MCUs movies but BOY DID HE DELIVER… between the special effects, the zoom ins on the character (very Raimi-esque) and the make up effect on the characters: I mean Zombie Strange? Amazing!! Want to live the full experience? Go watch the movie in 3D: totally worth it!
Tumblr media
Also, about the effects, the fact that it was much darker than other MCU movies was a interesting take because we got a little bit of darkness on Avengers: Endgame before the finale battle but in this movie; it was straight up a whole other level! There were some jump scares but it made me want to be more invested in the movie. We couldn’t expect what was going to happen…
Tumblr media
On to the actors - we mentioned Xochitl Gomez earlier; now on the queen herself that it Elizabeth Olsen. That girl delivered, that girl killed it, that girl was just A-MA-ZING! We knew she was made to play Wanda but this movie pretty much confirmed it. I already had chilled when she said in the trailer « you break the rules and become a hero; I do it and become the enemy… that doesn’t seem fair » - but also, she’s got a point… Without giving up to much away, this movie shows how powerful she can be and what she’s capable of doing.
Tumblr media
Now, on to the man of the hour: Benedict Cumberbatch. I just think this man is so talented he can basically portray anyone and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was no exception. Like most MCU actors, Cumberbatch was made for Stephen Strange and he delivered a performance out of the world. I’m glad to see he has another Doctor Strange movie under his belt; we’ve seen him in other MCU movies like Thor Ragnarok, Spider-Man No Way Home or the Avengers (Infinity War and Endgame) but it is nice to see him being the center of the movie and getting to see more of his story.
Tumblr media
And finally, one of my favorite characters in the MCU: Wong! In my opinion, he’s underrated. We don’t talk enough about him. The one liners he throws at Strange or « being done with his shit » but also what he’s capable of doing. I just hope he gets a mini series or something because he deserves it.
Tumblr media
To conclude my review, I just think that the movie was a perfect combination between horror/darkness and excitement. What I like is that the trailer didn’t give to much away about the movie: you go in thinking one thing and the another thing comes along. Props to the cast and the crew (I.e Sam Raimi) for doing an amazing job with the new MCU film.

Preview: 2024 Boston Underground Film Festival
The Boston Underground Film Festival returns to the Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) from Wed. March 20 to Sun. March 24, 2024! The fest is now in it's 24th edition celebrating bizarre, weird and alt cinema!
Tumblr media
Here at Green’s Party, I’ve been lucky enough to cover the festival since 2016 (the fest took off in 2020 and 2021, and I was unable to attend 2022, but I returned in 2023). Here are some of the highlights of this year’s BUFF:
Wed. March 20:
Opening Night film is the East Coast Premiere of Immaculate, which stars current It Girl Sydney Sweeney as a nun in a new covenant as nightmarish things start happening. The film opens nationwide on Friday from Neon, but BUFF fans get to see the East Coast Premiere! Then it's time for the North American Premiere of the new restoration of the 1990 Hong Kong action film Fatal Termination.
Thurs. March 21:
Day 2 kicks off with a Strange Kindness, which was filmed in Cape Cod and focuses on a small town shaken by a violent crime resulting in a house to house manhunt. This thriller is joined by the VT filmed short The Thaw. Then it's Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (CANADA), a vampire coming-of-age film. Then it's Femme (U.K.), set in London's drag scene where a victim of a homophobic attack encounters the assailant months later in a gay sauna and slowly plots revenge.
Fri. March 22:
The day kicks off at 5PM with The Dunwich Horrors, a short program made up of all New England-based horror stories. Then it's the road movie Off Ramp about some Juggalos making their way through the South and a series of misadventures ensue. Sleep (KOREAN) is about an expectant couple in which the husband is developing a dangerous sleepwalking habit.
Sat. March 23:
One of my favorite portions of BUFF is the Sound + Vision music video program. This year there's 27 music videos including some from The Hives, The Chemical Brothers and more. One of the highlights of 2016 BUFF was Little Sister, directed by Zach Clark (who I interviewed at the fest). Now he's back with the alien road movie The Becomers. A deadly infestation of spiders in a French apartment building is the center of Infested (FRANCE) from Shudder.
Sun. March 24:
In the afternoon there's With Love and a Major Organ (CANADA) set in an alternate world where hearts are made of objects and suppressing emotions, a woman literally gives a suitor her heart and it sets this drama in motion. Omen (BELGIUM) was actually Belgium's submission for Best International Feature to the Academy Awards this past year. It's about a Congolese expat who prepares to return home to present his pregnant girlfriend to his family. Then the Closing Night film is Boy Kills World (GERMANY / SOUTH AFRICA / USA), which boasts the most star power with Bill Skarsgard, Famke Jannsen (who I worked with on Monument Ave), Sharlto Copley and was produced by Sam Raimi. It's about a man who was orphaned as a child and deaf, but he becomes a killing machine and adapts the voice of his favorite video game. The trailer has some very Matrix-like action to it!
For tickets and info on 2024 BUFF
Stay tuned to Green’s Party for my coverage of this year’s fest!
