oh i'm dumb i thought he was British because he gets a funeral at Whitby and his log is in English but,,, I don't think it's ever said that he is British or not, unlike the Scottish captain of the other Russian vessel Dracula uses later on (the one who refuses to listen to his foreign crew and toss the crate)

To be fair anon, it could be that I am wrong. I don't have my physical copy to double check at the moment because I am on a trip.

The ship is a Russian vessel and it is the Russian consul who deals with it at the end of the journey. I suppose I find it hard to imagine a Russian ship with a Russian crew (except for the Romanian mate) departing from Varna is captained by someone British. As opposed to a ship departing from London. Not impossible, but it feels unlikely.

We don't actually know that the log is in English. The version of the log we get - as Matt noted today - is from a newspaper article that Mina pasted into her journal. The newspaper translating a log is not beyond the realm of possibility.

As for the funeral at Whitby, sailors getting buried where they die is pretty common regardless of nationality (if their bodies aren't buried at sea). If he was Russian, I don't think shipping the body back in the state it was in would exactly be the best thing to do.

On a thematic level, I like how having a Russian character who also grapples with what to do about Dracula pulls another imperial power in the late 19th century into the story (and Dracula has no respect for the Romanovs, as he said in his history rant). He undermines all imperial structures, and that is part of his threat and the crisis of empire.
