This is Madness

Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari is huge. Few things;

First, poor Carlos, having to announce his own departure is brutal.

Second, if Toto really only did find out yesterday, why? Was Lewis afraid he would change his mind? Guilt? Is the W15 a disaster?

Third, Ferrari was the only other option. There was very little chance he would wind up at Redbull. Max is first driver, Christian Horner has admitted to not seeing a future with him.

Fourth, BONO?! He signed an extension contract. So the question is does he have an out clause as well? Will Lewis buy him out? Can he? Will Bono even choose Lewis?

Fifth, Team Loyalty is a big deal in modern F1, but that's the key, it's modern. F1 drivers used to change teams more frequently. We've seen it even now. Alonso has been on six teams total, with separate stints at different times for Renault and McLaren. Kimi drove for five teams. Seb drove for five teams. Checo, five, and so on. Hamilton's stint with Mercedes is unprecedented. 17 years total. Not something to scoff at, but unprecedented. It shouldn't be treated as some ultimate betrayal. He was the exception to the rule.

Sixth, I think Lewis implicitly trusts Fred Vasseur. Do I? No. Do I think that the rumors going around about poaching Red Bull staff and the fact that we don't know about Bono or Andrew could mean that Lewis's side of the garage is stacked exactly how he wants it.

Seventh, Charles is not going to be second driver, not really. Yes, you don't bring a driver like Lewis in to make him second fiddle, but I think that the hope is that Charles will learn what he's been missing, and I love Charles but there are definitely moments that demonstrated room for growth. Lewis has always talked about how much the sport has changed, and even though it is his complaints that make headlines, his positive enforcement of some of these changes is a good attitude to bring. Charles is the 'Il Predestinato' they just want to make sure that he's the best version of it they can get.

Eighth, The Mercedes garage is going to spin this season. Their PR team is going to work like never before. They're going to spin the narrative to George, they're going to isolate Lewis. He can't be in the future development meetings anymore, he's the competition. His colleagues of a decade can no longer trust him and that is sure to be lonely. They're not going to let that be the story. I think we might even be seeing some of it already. The question as to whether or not Toto knew in advance, coming out against the fact that allegedly Sainz and LeClerc have known for at least a couple weeks, is interesting and I'm intrigued at the level of truth.

Ninth, Whether you like Lewis or not, there were moments last season that the team shafted him. Prioritizing his teammate when he was in a better position, abandoning him on podium, etc. Lewis was so supportive of Susie and Toto, George didn't even bother to do anything other than repost the official statement. Lewis was Jack's hero, now all of a sudden, George is the one on vacations, and teaching him carting. The relationship has been slowly fracturing since Abu Dhabi 2021. Whether or not Lewis leaves on a good note at the end of the season will depend on if Mercedes will even give him the time of day. This could very well be Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren.

Finally, I don't think Lewis Hamilton has ever been the type to pull the rug out from someone without cause. He's always been a huge target in the F1 community and I think he's been ready for a change for a while. It's hard to make a change, especially when you're leaving something that once treated you so well. If it is true that he gave Mercedes no proper warning then hopefully he apologizes and explains. We're not entitled to know, but they are.

In the spirit of the holiday season can we consider that Mercedes is a family BECAUSE the vibes are rancid not in spite of. They have that awkward family dinner thing going for them and I mean that with love.

Complete with the grandpa that says wack shit like we’re closing the gap to Red Bull (Toto), the ‘sure let’s get you to bed grandpa’ uncle (James A), the rich uncle that may or may not be in a new age wellness cult (Lewis), the cousin that everyone is compared to (Bono), the one that came for the spiked eggnog (Shov), the hormonal teenager that is loud about how much he hates sitting at the kids table (George), the kids table (Mick, Fred, Kimi), the one they don’t talk about but still haunts the narrative (Nico), the goodest boy (Roscoe), the one sane relative that went low contact and moved away to live his best life (Valtteri). 

But they all still come together year after year, no matter what (for Susie, Merc fans and the Silver Arrows to take aim once again). Happy Holidays! Hope next year is a good one!

Random Shameless headcanons I have for characters other than Ian and Mickey post-finale….

Fiona comes back to Chicago when Frank dies. She’s dreading it. Even though she misses her family like crazy, it’s hard coming back. She gets to the airport and nearly turns back around. She’s anxious the whole flight. But when she sees her siblings waiting for her at arrivals, she breaks down in tears. There’s a big family hug. She doesn’t stay for long but she’s glad she came. From then on, she returns often.

Debbie and Carl end up running the Alibi with Tipping. Debbie hosts an LGBTQ+ quiz night once a month and meets the love of her life at one of these nights. Carl may or may not end up having a bisexual awakening at a different one of these nights. Carl and Debbie work on a whole menu of cocktails that they name after their family and friends. They bicker a bit but they don’t fight. They find they actually work well together.

Svetlana has a comfortable life. She’s single for a long while, just focused on raising Yev. She works at a run-down Eastern European restaurant as a waitress and very quickly works her way up to manager. She turns the place around and one day is able to apply for a loan and buy the place. Now she spends her days running a tight ship - a well reviewed restaurant with a perfect health score - and some of her nights sipping an ice cold vodka at the bar, impeccably dressed. There may or may not be a beautiful, rich widow who woos her….

(Don’t hate me for this one) Lip and Tami end up moving to Milwaukee where they have another baby. It’s ok for awhile but then they break up. They move back to Chicago and co-parent well together even though the breakup is bad. They try dating other people casually. But they eventually fall back in love. It takes time and a lot of trying but they get there in the end. It’s very messy. But isn’t life?

Lip ends up staying with Ian and Mickey for awhile after the break up. Although they’re family and they love each other, it feels like forever for everyone.

Despite Tami and Lip breaking up, everyone treats Tami as family and nobody cuts her out of things or sides with Lip over her. Everyone is neutral and supportive. Lip is kinda amazed at everyone’s maturity. It makes him realise how much they’ve all grown up.

Liam is a straight A student. He does incredibly well in school. He has a lot of ambition and dreams. He wants to be a defence lawyer and do as much pro bono work as he can, he wants to be a doctor and work at a free clinic, he wants to get involved with politics and help speak for those who can’t. There’s a lot he wants to do, so he starts by doing a lot of volunteering at different organisations. Because of this his applications to college are amazing. He may or may not get his siblings into volunteering too.

Debbie gets a ‘franny’ tattoo on the top of her arm near her shoulder. It’s done from Franny writing her own name. It’s both very sweet and very cool.

Mandy comes back to Chicago after a bad breakup. She’s determined to build a good life. She misses Ian and Mickey but can’t find the strength to get in contact. She knows Terry is dead. So, she has a good job, a nice apartment. Everything’s going well and then she runs into Debbie. And…it’s nice. It’s nice to see Debbie happy and healthy and with a sweet kid. Debbie encourages Mandy to get in contact with Ian and Mickey but says she’ll keep her secret if she doesn’t want to.

She doesn’t have to. Mandy gets their address off Debbie and turns up at their apartment. It’s a lot emotionally. They have a long catch up session with alcohol, some very, very good weed (better than they ever had as teenagers) and takeout. There’s laughter and tears - mostly from Ian and Mandy but also from Mickey. Yes. They saw those tears. Stop lying. She stays close with them and Debbie.

Franny and Fred and Lip and Tami’s second kid have so much fun growing up together. They have sleepovers and days out and are close like siblings. They’re close to all the older Gallaghers but they idolise Liam and he’s their favourite. He teaches them fun facts and helps them with their homework.

Kev and Vee occasionally return to Chicago with the girls, they are doing well and they rent a big house on a lake and invite the Gallaghers. It becomes a tradition once a year. Usually Fourth of July so they can watch other people’s fireworks, get drunk and party. The kids have a great time swimming and exploring. The adults enjoy Ian and Mickey’s premium weed. There may or may not be midnight swimming and very drunken Marco Polo games.

Vee and Fiona meet up for a girls weekend once a year where they find a hotel with a spa and a bar. They end up inviting Debbie and Tami after a while. Lip jokes there should be a boys weekend but he can’t be bothered to organise it.

From what I read, it seems Ferrari was always a goal for Lewis. Apparently it took Niki Lauda a lot of time to convince Lewis to join Merc back in the day. And considering Lewis' connection with Fred Vasseur, on the surface it's not so surprising with the assumption that:

1. The W15 is a shit box

2. Lewis wants to retire soon and the 2025 spot is the only time he'd get a chance to wear the red

3. ^re retiring and not wanting to wait around 2026 for Merc to be comp again.

That being said, I never in my life would've thought Lewis would've moved teams. Him and Merc seem intertwined. Like I hate it but also find this very interesting to see who gets shuffled where. The big question is now, who gets custody of Bono??? And who's gonna get the new Merc seat??? Sainz, Albon??

Here are my sleep deprived thoughts:

1. Lewis looks damn good in red (i will always miss the black merc suit)

2. I see all the merc x lewis drama on twt but honestly, we have to just trust that lewis is doing what's better for him, and his career and who knows, maybe lewis and merc will be like lewis and mclaren yk calm (it won't be)

3. Fred is chill ngl, baldy can be v funny (i cannot believe he just took lewis from toto lmao)

4. Lewis should probably start learning french/italian on duolingo

5. I'm a Lewis fan more than a merc fan so the moment we get to 1st Jan 2025 you'll find me chanting forza ferrari sempre bc where lewis goes i go

afaik the concern about Lewis going to Ferrari alone comes mostly from the widespread belief that in order to succeed there you need people that can “shield” you from their heavy internal politics. And this doesn’t come from fans but from pundits or those who have or had in the past ties to the team. That being said, no one is to say that this job can’t be done by Fred (who seem like a very capable TP) or whoever else, so Lewis might not need to bring people he already knows there. Bono is a different thing because they have a type of mutual understanding after all these years that will be difficult to replicate regardless and Lewis has spoken many times about how much Bono helps him focus during a race when he starts doubting stuff etc.

There's heavy internal politics in all these teams tbh. It's not like there was no such thing at Merc or, please, at McLaren??? I'm not denying Ferrari is its own thing but politics are something drivers deal with to some extent by default everywhere they are. And he's been doing that for decades. Not as in "it's not gonna be an issue for him" but as in "he's fully aware he's gonna be confronted to this issue".

I'm also not denying it's easier to deal with said politics when you have friends in the mob or they're acquired to your cause (like at Merc) and that Ferrari is more exclusive about it than most. But more than anything what I'm struggling with when it comes to this discourse is that it's not like it was likely at any point of this that he would move there with a truckload of people. The only person he knew would be there for sure before he signed was Loic Serra.

He knew all that, and he chose to go. With full knowledge of the facts. Again : not as in "it's not gonna be an issue for him" but as in "he's fully aware he's gonna be confronted to this issue".
