I think it's fair to think of the possibility JGY did see JL as a political adversary that as soon as he comes of age could replace him if his cards were played right. That wouldn't mean JGY didn't love and doted on him either: JGY loved his own son, Qin Su, LXC and never meant for things to get out of hand like they did with those people but none of them were safe. JL himself is used as a hostage! If it meant he wouldn't have to fight JL for power later then sure, leave him be. But tbh (1/2)

JGY didn't have had much to do with that - I don't think JC interfered that much with Jinlintai's business while JL was growing up. I personally always interpreted post-canon JC going out of his way to secure JL's power and politically indispose himself as a sign of character development, since before he bowed his head and was, for example, corteous with JZX asking after JYL without even apologizing, or the whole stuff with WWX...

Here’s the thing, though. JC interfering with JL’s leadership is not a good thing. It is a sect leader interfering in the running of another sect. Like, I think we should be clear here, this isn’t him offering JL advice or an alliance, this is him going to Koi Tower and bullying the people there into shutting up. What’s going to happen as time passes and JL grows up? JC isn’t teaching him anything, he’s just showing up and forcing everyone into line. What happens when JC can’t help anymore? What happens if he chooses not to? This is why always doing things for someone is a bad idea, because they’ll never learn to do it themselves! Maybe he doesn’t mean to be controlling and force JL to rely on him, but that’s what he’s doing. And it also means that JL has to keep on JC’s good side as long as he’s reliant on him coming down and keeping the peace, because if JC withdraws his aid then JL is fucked. I would not want to be reliant on someone with a history of abandoning family the moment they became inconvenient.

Also, if JGY wanted to keep JL from becoming a political adversary, all he had to do was... well, not teach JL how to become a political adversary to someone on JGY’s level. Which all evidence suggests he didn’t. Problem solved. Also I got the impression that even holding JL hostage JGY had no intention of hurting him; the narration calls attention to the fact that JGY’s hands are shaking and that he’s in bad enough shape that he might legitimately forget about the wire if he tries to run, there isn’t a word about him genuinely being prepared to kill JL to get away. When he holds WWX hostage his tone and the narration and the fact that he does deliberately cut WWX suggest he’d kill him if it came to it; with JL he just seems scared and desperate, not like someone prepared to kill his own nephew. Besides, killing the hostage is never a wise idea if you aren’t completely sure you’re home safe. If I had to guess, JGY probably intended on holding JL as a threat to prevent anyone from attacking him while he left and then letting him go once he was far enough away to be safe. And of course re LXC specifically... I’m pretty sure JGY had zero intention of harming him. Even right at the end when LXC has just killed him and he’s on the edge of drawing him into a trap so they can die together, JGY can’t go through with it. His son and QS were sacrifices he was willing to make and it’s fucked up, but I’m willing to believe he didn’t see LXC and JL as expendable.

[modern!wq was letting her friend qs rant on the phone about how much she didn’t like being the only girl among her siblings when wen ning came back from work. wq pried the phone away from her ear and put qs on loud speaker, not bothering focusing too hard on what she was talking about. but the second wq stood up to greet her brother... she knew something was wrong. wn didn’t have to blink anymore if he didn’t want to, nor could he cry or snot, but his eyes were purplish so much he was straining himself to keep them open. almost af if he was on the verge of tears. (“a-jie... I’m so sorry but I have terrible news”). mianmian got proposed to. before wq could have snatched her from someone else by forcing her to honor the bet they made about “marrying the first person proposing to her”. but wq had taken too long with the preparations and now some bitch got her same idea. now mianmian was already at city hall waiting for the ceremony to begin, bc she decided to sacrifice her honor to win 50 bucks. she’s so stubborn, wq could not not be in love with her. (“who is she?” / “not a she, a-jie” / “a he??” / “it’s su minshan”). hell no. over wq’s dead body... or, more likely, her brother’s.] so that’s the story how wq barged in on the wedding and yeeted her brother over su minshan to save mianmian’s lesbian ass from her greedy self. now wn is held captive by animal rescue bc none of the clerks at city hall were able to categorize him after he barreled into the groom. mianmian has never been happier, despite the money loss... that is.

What actually prompted me to ask you about Finrod is your fic Anathema :) I liked very much his characterization bc he is also imo very complex and enigmatic. Could you elaborate why you find him quite creepy on his first meeting with Bëor’s people?

The Silmarillion, Chapter 17, Of the coming of Men into the west + Later Quenta Silmarillion,The War of the Jewels.

“Then Felagund,standing silent in the night-shadow of the trees, looked down in to the campand he beheld a strange people” 

Everything’s cool, except for the “night-shadow” thing which, to me, foreshadows something that is not quite clear.

“[…] Long Felagundwatched them”

 I do believe that It must have been very strange andfascinating to discover the Atani. But how long did he watch them exactly? I’dnot feel very comfortable to learn that my friend lurked around and watched “long”before introducing themselves.

“…And lovefor them stirred in his hear”. 

I can understand the spiritual/intellectualattraction and the curiosity, so I’m fine with it.

“…But heremained hidden in the trees until they had fallen asleep. Then he went amongthe sleeping people…”

Wait, what? 

That’s where it really becomes creepy…  although I perfectly understand the fact thathe has to be cautious because the Men could be wary, I just feel very uneasy withthis image of a powerful being hiding in the trees and sneaking into the campwhen everybody’s asleep…

Let’s try to ignore the contemptuouscomments of the narrator (Pengolodh btw) - yeah because only the Eldar know about arts andculture, and only they can teach what art is to other species…. Does it remindyou of something? - and go on.

“Now Menawoke and listened to Felagund as he harped and sang, and each thought that hewas in some fair dream”. 

That’s where we must remember the power of music inTolkien’s world, and Finrod’s mastery (cf. the music fight with Sauron in The Layof Leithian); What sort of device can music be? Does music summon images? Howdoes it affect emotions and sentiments? “each thought he was in some fair dream”implies the idea of an illusion, doesn’t it?

“… until hesaw that his fellow was awake also beside him” 

So, the power of music isstrong enough to prevent Men from acknowledging what’s happening around…?

“But theydid not speak or stir while Felagund still played, because of the beauty of themusic and the wonder of the song. Wisdom was in the words of the Elven-king,and the hearts grew wiser that hearkened to him”. 

Pretty cool, right?

 Yet,wisdom. Which wisdom? Is absolute wisdom a thing? Isn’t it supposed to berelative, related to your culture, environment, experiences, etc.? Hm. Here, weare talking about wisdom according to the Eldar, which ultimately discards the Atani’s wisdom and makes it meaningless, if not something that does not evenexist. /Lol/

Which Felagund has never actuallywitnessed…

I agree about Aman, it makes perfect sense. But how could he give them visionsof the Making if he never witnessed it? Did he get the same visions from theAinur? Or did he make them up? #noidea

“…and hisElvish speech was interpreted in each mind according to its measure.”

Okay,let’s repeat the last part: “according to its measure.” So, if I understandcorrectly, Felagund adapted his song and words and the visions he displayedaccording to what each individual was able to acknowledge. Although it isactually great to adapt your speech to your audience (you don’t speak to scholarsthe way you speak to high-school students), I cannot help wondering about themanipulative aspect of it. If there is no actual manipulation, it still showsthat Finrod would have been able to do it. Not only heis smart enough to realize how/when to do it, but his song is also powerfulenough for it, and he is skilled enough to modulate his songs and to use therequired rhetorical tools.

“…and theyloved him and took him for their lord and were ever after loyal to the House ofFinarfin.” 

This sentence appears a conclusion of the passage, as a logical consequenceof the whole thing, as if it were but a natural outcome of the meeting between theMen and the Eldar. But hadn’t it been prepared by the whole narrativedevelopment? Think about it. When Finrod started to sing and revealed himselfto the Men, he had already watched them “long”, meaning that he had probablyunderstood/learned many things about them before he decided to show up. Wasn’tit the plan from the beginning, to make the Men acknowledge him as loremaster,as a teacher, as the voice of wisdom and consequently, as a lord? I do not doubtthat there is a genuine affection regarding Felagund’s relationship to the Men(obviously it is a thing), but I can’t help seeing some sort of purpose behindthe seemingly innocent display of knowledge, grace, beauty… and power.

“[…] Indeed,they believed at first Felagund was one of the Valar [“gods” in the LQS], ofwhom they had heard rumour that dwelt in the West, and this was (some say) thechief cause of their journey” 

Although I am certain Finrod never pretended tobe an Ainur, and never even thought about it, there is something quiteambivalent in his first approach to men. What exactly did he expected them tothink of him?

“…ButFelagund dwelt among them and taught them true lore.” 

Lol. True lore. TRUTH.Again, like wisdom, I don’t believe there is one universal, absolute truth.Especially in terms of lore. And it irks me to be told about “true lore”, “truewisdom”. QED

“…and Felagund discovered also that he couldread in the minds of Men such thoughts as they wished to reveal in speech sothat their words were easily interpreted”

The sentence is supposed to explainhow they communicate. Hence the emphasis on “as they wished to reveal”. But ifhe can read in their minds so easily, he would probably be able to discoverwhat they don’t want to reveal, wouldn’t he? Perhaps he did not try to, but itmust have been possible, right? So yeah. Creepy.

The Quenta Silmarillion,The Lost Road and Other Writings.

Here, wehave more or less the same narrative; the syntax and vocabulary are slightlydifferent but the meaning is the same (“Felagund drew nigh among the trees tothe camp of Bëor and he remained hidden until all had fallen asleep […] and hetook a rude harp […] and they marvelled, for wisdom was in that song as well asbeauty […] at first they deemed that Felagund was one of the gods […] butFelagund told them true lore […].) Which means that this meeting has alwaysfollowed the same narrative pattern, with no major change between the differentperiods of writing.

Now there aretwo more points that trouble me, which appear in the LQS and in the Lost Road…’sQS:  While in the published Silmarillionwe have “in this way he got his name, Bëor, whereas his name before had beenBalan; for Bëor signified ‘Vassal” in the tongue of his people”, in the LQS wehave: “thus Bëor got his name, for it signified Vassal in their tongue, andeach of their chieftains after him bore this name as a title until the time ofBregolas and Barahir, and in QS: “thus Bëor the Vassal got his name among the Noldor".

Ok. A bitof intellectual honesty is required here; it is true that in medievalliterature vassalage was often seen as something very honorific, and Bëor’sloyalty to Finrod is given as something beautiful and honourable. And again, Ido believe that, on the question of sentiments between Finrod and Bëor, it wasgenuine. Yet, I can help feeling a bit uneasy about the whole thing, especiallyin the name-title which is inherited as a way to remind them of their place inthe hierarchy…. Or maybe I’m just paranoid. But. Yeah. Irks.

We alsohave something in both the LQS and in the QS: 

“For Bëor and his folk laterlearned the language of the Eldar and forsook their own.” 

 Although it is greatfor them to be able to speak the Eldarin tongue, I’m quite uncomfortable withthe idea that they just dropped their own tongue… Ok, the Eldar wereinfluential lords and they were numerous and all, but still. To totally forsake one’slanguage under the influence of powerful lords (in a few generations only) isquite… disturbing. And Tolkien was a linguist, he knew the history of languages,he knew that a language doesn’t simply disappear because the people decided toforsake it. Proof is given in the Silmarillion: 

“Men had long had dealings withthe Dark elves, east of the Mountains, and from them had learned much of theirspeech, and since all the languages of the Quendi were of one origin, thelanguage of Bëor and is folk resembled the Elven-tongue in many words anddevices”. 

This makes sense, because languages influence one another, they mergethrough the contacts with other people, and that’s apparently the case betweenthe Atani and the Dark-Elves. Yet, when one language is totally forsaken to bereplaced by another one, it is much more… problematic? Or at least ambiguous, especiallysince the Eldar are very good at learning other languages.

A new wave ofintellectual honesty is required: It is true that Tolkien enriched this idea,through the character of Tuor, and it is given in the Lhammas:

“Naught is preservedof the most ancient speeches of Men, save of the tongue of the folk of Bëor andHaleth and Hador. Now the languages of these folks were greatly influenced bythe Green-Elves, and it was of old, named Taliska, and this tongue was knownstill to Tuor[…], and it was in part recorded by the wise men of Gondolin whereTuor for a while abode. Yet Tuor himself used this tongue no longer, foralready even in Gumlin’s day men in Beleriand forsook the daily use of theirown tongue and spoke and gave names unto their children children in the languageof the Gnomes.”

So, some mortals remembered the old tongue, but only the most literate apparently; whichconfirms the idea of one language –that of the vassals – being replaced by that of their lords who are supposed tobe keen on languages. Historically, the influence of a language is related tothe power of the people speaking it: Wealth -> big army (+ loads of manuscripts)-> influential language. So it makes sense in Beleriand. But language ispower, and even though the Men willingly adopted the Eldarin tongue, it seemsvery strange that they simply forsook their native tongue… Right?

Now, I have no definitive conclusion and I don’t try to prove anything since I don’t really know how to take it myself - I only find this whole passage weird. It isambiguous. Obviously,Finrod liked Bëor’s people and respected them. After all, he did help themsettle in Beleriand, he trusted them and was a good lord to them. But the more I thinkabout it, the more I read some elements as a manifestation of something that isa bit “imperialistic” (“helping the poor uncivilized men to climb theladder of civilisation”……………..)  Maybe I’mwrong, I don’t know. Maybe I’ll eventually change my mind about this interpretationwhich is far from being the only possible reading. But I cannot unsee these problematicelements. In any case, I cling to my opinion that there’s something unclear,if only in the diegetic narrator’s intents.

Fic: Mistletoe

There was a well known secret in the CCG.

It was one shared by many of the investigators there and the reason why it was called a secret was that no one actually openly acknowledged it.

At times, there was tension among the ranks. Friends and comrades that were at ease with one another would stare a little too intently at each other, eyes suspicious and a little shifty, wondering if perhaps… Maybe… the one that they were looking at shared in this secret.

It was the worst kept secret in the CCG.

And that secret was that almost everyone there was a little bit in love with Sasaki Haise.

The only ones that were possibly immune were those investigators that hadn’t had the chance to meet him yet. But even so, there were still those that had caught a glimpse of him and without even knowing his name, found themselves curious and entranced. And then there were those who knew his name and feats but not his face that developed the same affection.

Even from the very beginning, the young man that trailed in the wake of Arima’s shadow drew curiosity and speculation. At first, the attention had been clouded with suspicion but the more people saw of him, the more they grew captivated.

There was just something about Sasaki Haise that inspired such feelings. It wasn’t just one thing either, it was a multiple of things that ensnared others. From his shy smile to his alarming strength, and even the way he treated others, even strangers, with a politeness that still somehow felt warm and inviting.

And the best part of this worst kept secret was that this young man, who had unknowingly captured so many hearts, was completely oblivious to it all.

Now, there were two holidays that seemed to really set the investigators off at the CGG when it came to Haise.

The first was, as expected, Valentine’s Day.

As cliche as it was, many had eagerly planned to pursue the young investigator with gifts of flowers and requests for coffee dates. But to the dismay of all, not a glimpse of Sasaki was to be seen that day. The feeling of romance and pursuit of it quickly faded by the following day. Fortunately, the dejected mood quickly lifted with Sasaki’s return the following week.

And yet, no one had the guts to approach him. It seemed as though the magic of Valentine’s day didn’t last past the 14th.

The only other holiday that seemed to inspire such courage was Christmas. And it was all due to a well known plant, an innocent sprig of green leaves and red berries. Mistletoe.

Mistletoe was found in an abundance around Christmas. It was hung in plain sight and in the most bizarre places, like the entrance to the Quinx’s home, the Chateau. It made a brief appearance for a whole two hours before mysteriously disappearing.

It was almost amusing to see where sprigs of mistletoe ended up, for some people took them down while others relocated them. Of course, many used this time old tradition in an attempt to catch Sasaki and in doing so, win a kiss from him.

Somehow, no one was able to catch him. Sprigs of mistletoe that were confirmed at their station, almost guaranteed a stolen kiss from their crush, seemingly disappeared into thin air. It left the scheming investigators in a huff when Haise passed by, giving each a friendly smile before going on his way. It still warmed the hearts of many in the cold winter, but many more mourned the lost chance.

The attempts continued with Haise none the wiser all the way up to the 25th. With no one having been successful, for who could keep stealing a kiss from Sasaki a secret, the majority of the CCG resigned themselves to try the following Valentine’s day.

As much as they had come to adore Sasaki Haise, Christmas was still spent with loved ones and friends.

December 24th found the Chateau covered in decorations. On the window, a cheerful reindeer cut out poked its head from the side, welcoming visitors inside.

And inside, a modest but heavily decorated tree stole all the attention. With four subordinates in his care, Haise couldn’t say no to how each of the Quinx members wanted to decorate the tree.

The outcome was a mismatch of ornaments and colors. From delicate glass ornaments to smiling little figures wearing Santa hats, every branch seemed to hold some sort of decoration. There were also Christmas lights, blinking merrily, which Shirazu had strung. In retaliation, Urie had added elegant red and white bows made of ribbon.

The decorations were just shy of being an eyesore, but Haise loved it because everyone had contributed to making the tree what it was. At least everyone had agreed on a single topper, a classic Christmas tree star that shone brightly from its place.

Beneath the tree, there was an assortment of gifts. Nothing too big, but there was something for everyone. The pile would only grow larger as he could hear the crinkle of gift wrappers still being handled and cut throughout the house.

Haise shook his head at their last minute preparations, but he was still smiling fondly. The Christmas spirit was at an all time high.

Dinner was well on its way and this year it was just the Qs and a couple guests so it was nothing extravagant. Still, the process of cooking the meals had Haise moving about the kitchen with a bounce in his step. From outside the kitchen, the Qs could hear Haise’s singing, their mentor’s voice drifting in and out of song as he worked.

Urie, who had been the only one properly prepared for Christmas Eve, had been lounging on the couch. A mug sat in front of him on the coffee table, the aroma of chocolate sweetness filling the air. Haise had even put three squares of marshmallows into the drink and Urie guarded it jealousy from his teammates.

Not that he needed to, Haise was sure to have more coming if it was needed

A knock at the door had Urie mentally grumbling and forced from his comfortable position. The door was opened to reveal Suzuya Juuzou, who was staring at the wreath that one of the Qs had hung on the door. He didn’t even seem to notice Urie standing there until the Urie cleared his throat.

Never one to be embarrassed, the androgynous man burst through the entranceway, making a beeline to where he could hear Haise’s voice.

“Haiseee…!” He called out happily before disappearing into the kitchen.

His subordinate stared blankly at his treating back and came into the house in a less explosive manner.

“Merry Christmas,” Urie huffed. The others had been nagging him throughout the week, telling him that he needed to get more into the spirit. So it was only today of all days that he allowed himself to utter those words in a tone that was a little bit more than friendly.

Hanbee nodded a greeting in return. Urie played host while Haise and Juuzou’s friendly chatter filtered in from the kitchen.

Shortly after, Saiko came barreling down the stairs, arms full of neatly wrapped presents. Tooru followed at a more sedate pace, also carrying a load of gifts. Surprisingly enough, Urie could see Shirazu’s gifts tucked under the tree beside his own.

With the room full, the peaceful silence was a thing of the past. From the kitchen, Haise kept one ear trained on the chatter from the other room while he watched Suzuya ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at each dish that had been prepared. More than once, Haise had to slap at the other man’s hands to stop him from sneaking a taste.

Of course, Suzuya pouted at his friend, pleading with such fierce eyes that Haise relented and offered him a sugar cookie instead.

Haise returned to the living room, a plate full of cookies just in time to see Arima and Mado enter. Like an excited puppy, Haise greeted them both with warm smiles and hugs.

Then just as quickly, he turned around and chided Shirazu who had been patiently shaking one of the gifts. Sheepishly, the younger man returned the present to its place under the tree and flopped on the couch.

“Watch it!” Urie hissed, barely dodging his teammate’s elbow.

An argument broke out between the two, Urie and Shirazu bickering for a moment while Tooru tried to calm them both down. surprisingly, it was Juuzo who broke it up by shoving a cookie in each of their mouths, effectively shutting them both up. He gave a happy hum of approval when the arguing stopped, pleased that order was restored.

The two didn’t dare start up again and grudgingly munched on the cookies.

In the meantime, Haise had gone into full host mode and was setting the food on the dinner table. Arima followed behind him, happy to help even when Haise insisted that they should all relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

After dinner, the adults were amused to see the younger investigators barely contain themselves in excitement. It wasn’t even the act of receiving gifts that caused it, but the exchange and watching each person’s reaction.

Shirazu tore into each gift, strips of wrapping paper surrounding him in a mess. He was always so grateful for each gift though, even hugging the plushie that Saiko had gifted him.

Urie was more meticulous about his unwrapping and took his time to fold away each square of wrapping paper. It was almost torture to watch him reveal his gifts, but the way his expression softened was well worth the wait.

“Oh,” Haise exclaimed out of nowhere, “Arima-san, I’m so sorry! Your gift arrived later than all the others and I didn’t get a chance to wrap it properly.”

He turned guilty eyes towards his mentor, fidgeting on his spot on the couch. “Would you mind if I gave it to you tomorrow…?”

Arima was shaking his head though, a slight smile on his face. “You don’t have to wrap it for me, Haise. I’m perfectly happy with however you want to give it to me.”

But Haise would not be deterred. “It’s a Christmas gift,” he said passionately, “It needs to be given the same care that I gave all the others so I can’t give it to you without wrapping it.”

“Tomorrow will be fine then,” Arima said agreeably. Haise smiled in return.

“Haise!” Suzuya called as he left the bathroom. He held something in his hands and in his excitement, wanted to show it to his friend. He moved with such speed towards Haise that no one realized what it was until Suzuya was dangling it above Haise’s head. “Look! Look!”

Punched between two fingers, there was the recognizable green of the mistletoe and notable red of the berries. Suzuya was almost trembling with excitement while everyone else in the room seemed to freeze.

“What is it?” He wondered, staring at the plant with a curious tilt of his head.

“Th-that’s mistletoe,” Tooru managed to choke out.

“Where the hell did you find that?” Shirazu demanded with a groan.

“Is it poisonous?” The possibility only seemed to further excite Suzuya.

Haise’s cheeks had tinged pink, but he remained standing where he was, caught between the mistletoe with Suzuya.

Akira laughed, a teasing smile on her lips when she said, “You have to kiss Haise, Juuzou!”

He blinked large eyes at Akira. “I can kiss Haise?”

“Kiss! Kiss!” Saiko cheered while wrapped in her new fleece blanket.

By Akira’s side, Arima had his arms folded across his chest but he gave an indulgent smile at the two.

“It’s a Christmas tradition,” Akira explained, “when you’re caught under the mistletoe with someone, you have to kiss them.”

“I’m not sure if that should count,” Tooru mumbled. “Technically, he brought the mistletoe and forced the–”

“Kisss!” Saiko cheered.

“Okay,” Suzuya said.

“Suzuya, you don’t have to–” Haise tried to stop it but his friend simply leaned forward and pressed his lips against Haise’s cheek.

“I kissed Haise!” Suzuya declared victoriously. While not exactly what they expected, the group still laughed and cheered.

The mistletoe was disposed of to prevent any other surprises. Haise was teased over his blushing face for the remainder of the night. It was an eventful Christmas Eve and it left all of them with a sense of warmth that went bone deep.

Eventually, the group dispersed. Juuzou and Hanbee we’re the first to leave. Juuzuo hugged Haise tight, his gift of a warm fluffy scarf wrapped around his neck.

Akira was next to go and she, too, hugged Haise and the rest of the Quix team.

With just the Qs and Arima, Haise quickly set to work with cleaning up after the guests.

In the living room, the Qs fidgeted under Arima’s impassive stare. All except Sailor who was already dozing on the couch, content and full of hot chocolate.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Freedom Caucus founder Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) said he came away from this week’s Democratic debate with a very clear impression of the winner: President Donald Trump.

“We now know why they’ve spent so much time on impeachment because they don’t have a message that will resonate with the American people,” Meadows said.

The North Carolina conservative said that billionaire Michael Bloomberg came to the stage completely unprepared for the shelling he got from the other Democrats on stage.

“He was really just blown away,” marveled Meadows.

Meadows said that he wasn’t any more impressed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, calling him “closer to Karl Marx than he is Carl Icahn.”

“Let us make sure that we take everybody else’s money and distribute it to those who don’t have it. The only person who’s not distributing his money is Bernie Sanders,” Meadows scoffed.

Still, he acknowledged, the Vermont socialist was still the man to beat for the nomination.

“There were a lot of blows that were given and a lot of shots taken. But actually, Bernie Sanders seemed to come away unscathed,” he said. “He’s the one with the most momentum. And as we see that Michael Bloomberg is not the one that’s going to take him on. Maybe somebody else on that debate stage tonight. But it just shows that a billion dollars doesn’t make you prepared for primetime because obviously Michael Bloomberg was not prepared tonight for even the simplest questions that he should have anticipated.”

Regardless, Meadows said, he didn’t see anything on the stage that should concern President Trump.

“He’s feeling really good. He’s feeling positive, mainly because he’s delivering on the promises that he made,” he said. “And he’s going to continue to do that not only for the next nine months but for the next five years.”

We concur with Meadows wholeheartedly. There was a lot of shouting on that stage Wednesday night, and it made for an entertaining debate in a cringeworthy kind of way. Bloomberg imploded, Elizabeth Warren drew her sword, and Sanders yelled angrily as usual. Biden looked lost. Buttigieg and Klobuchar were both…there. None of them looked capable of going toe-to-toe with Trump, who brings with him not only a fighting spirit and an energized base but also four years of concrete accomplishments.

We’re not entirely discounting Bloomberg’s billions or Bernie’s cult, but we’re feeling better than ever about Trump’s chances in November. It’s just hard to see how any of these kooks can take him down.

The most remarkable comments came from senior Koch executive Brian Hooks, who said, “The divisiveness of this White House is causing long-term damage. When in order to win on an issue someone else has to lose, it makes it very difficult to unite people and solve the problems in this country. You see that on trade: In order to get to a good place on trade, convince the American people that trade is bad.”

While many conservatives were appalled to hear this kind of talk from some of the biggest donors in the right wing sphere, none were more disgusted than former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon. In an interview with Politico, Bannon said that now was the worst possible time for the Koch Brothers to sow dissension within the Republican Party.

“What they have to do is shut up and get with the program, okay,” he told the site. “And here’s the program: Ground game to support Trump’s presidency and program – victory on Nov. 6.”

Bannon said that regardless of how the Koch’s felt about the spending bill, they were certainly happy to crow about the tax cuts that this Congress and president delivered in February. “We can have a theoretical discussion later, okay?” Bannon said. “This is why they don’t know what it means to win. We don’t have time to have some theoretical discussion and to have their spokesman come out and say the president is divisive.

“Charles Koch is a good man,” Bannon continued, “but 100 days before an election that will determine the direction of the country is not the time to tell us that you are prepared to work with Democrats that support parts of your progressive agenda. It’s wrong, it’s stupid and it shows contempt for the hardworking grassroots folks that delivered the victory that got your tax cut.”

40 Groups Sign Complaint Saying Pelosi has “Weaponized Impeachment”

As the House of Representatives prepared to vote on the impeachment inquiry resolution Thursday, a coalition of 40 conservative groups released an ethics complaint aimed squarely at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). In the complaint, the groups – led by Tea Party Patriots Action president Jenny Beth Martin – said that Pelosi is embarked on a mission to find impeachable offenses where none exist.

“In launching her ‘official’ impeachment inquiry without benefit of a vote of the full House of Representatives and without indicating anything remotely qualifying as ‘treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors’ that is the subject of the inquiry, Speaker Pelosi has weaponized impeachment,” reads the complaint.

The groups insist that taking a full House vote at this late date is “inadequate at this stage,” and does nothing to erase the last month of secretive hearings and selective leaks to the media. They accuse Pelosi of making a “one-person decision” to go after President Trump with the constitutional authority of the House.

“If she now understands that before going any further, the full House of Representatives must make its impeachment inquiry legitimate by the casting of votes, she is tacitly admitting that what came before is illegitimate,” the complaint states. “Consequently, all ‘evidence’ gleaned during this portion of the ‘investigation’ must be discarded for the sake of fairness.”

The complaint marvels at the fact that there was no comment from Pelosi when former Vice President Joe Biden “bragged that he had leveraged more than a billion dollars in U.S. assistance to Ukraine to achieve a desired policy end, threatening Ukrainian government officials that he would deny them U.S. assistance if they did not remove the prosecutor general within six hours.”

In the letter, Martin and her coalition of conservative allies asked the Office of Congressional Ethics to take a close look at the unconstitutional usurpation of power by Pelosi’s Democrats.

“Speaker Pelosi’s conduct is an encroachment across the constitutionally-mandated separation of powers. She has no business examining or investigating the president’s legitimate exercise of his authority to determine the foreign and national security policy of the United States,” the complaint says.

Pelosi is riding her highest horse these days, insisting to anyone who will listen that she is America’s sheriff, protecting the country from a president who believes he is “above the law.” But while her public statements convey confidence, we don’t believe for a second that she is actually optimistic about how all of this will turn out. As far as we can see, she hasn’t managed to peel a single House Republican off their opposition to the inquiry. And by allowing Rep. Adam Schiff to conduct a clandestine, illegitimate investigation, she has destroyed any chance that it might ever happen.

Voters are going to (eventually) see through this coup. When that happens, Democrats are going to have a tough hill to climb in 2020.
