Toni Braxton - You're Makin' Me High 1996

Toni Michele Braxton is an American R&B singer, songwriter, actress and television personality. She has sold over 70 million records worldwide and is one of the best-selling female artists in history. Braxton has won seven Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, seven American Music Awards, and numerous other accolades. In 2011, Braxton was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. "You're Makin' Me High" is the lead single from her second studio album, Secrets (1996). The mid-tempo song represents a joint collaboration between the Grammy Award-winning producer Babyface and Bryce Wilson. The beat of the song was originally for singer-songwriter Brandy, with Dallas Austin pegged to write a lyric to override; however, Braxton had Babyface write lyrics for the song. It was ultimately issued in the US as a double A-side with "Let It Flow", the airplay hit from the 1995 film Waiting to Exhale.

"You're Makin' Me High" became Braxton's first number-one single on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts; it remained on top for one week on the former and for two weeks on the latter, eventually going Platinum. A remix by David Morales with re-recorded vocals allowed the single to also top the Dance Club Songs chart for two weeks in August 1996.

The song earned Braxton her third Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1997. The success of "You're Makin' Me High" would later be continued with the release of the smash hit "Un-Break My Heart", which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 consecutive weeks, while topping the charts in several other countries.

"You're Makin' Me High" was sampled for Method Man & Redman's 2001 song "Part II", from the How High soundtrack. In 2014, Anglo-American producer/DJ Secondcity sampled a part of the song's bridge for the main hook of his UK number-one single "I Wanna Feel".

The accompanying music video for "You're Makin' Me High", directed by Bille Woodruff, features Braxton and a group of friends consisting of actresses Erika Alexander, Vivica A. Fox, and Tisha Campbell-Martin.

Rhea had always kept a close eye on Y/n backstage. There had never been a good way for them to be friendly on screen with each other. Rhea had always sort of been the bad guy, even whenever she wasn't. Y/n was sweet and delicate, and way too good to be working for WWE. She was kind hearted and lacked the edge that was required of even the most morally uptight of babyfaces. Y/n was the kind of person who wanted to try solving her problems outside of the ring, but that didn't work. And so, Rhea had always kept her distance for the fear of being sucked into Y/n's way of thinking, or worse, influencing her.

Y/n's pacifism was a breath of fresh air for Rhea. Whenever her anger started to get the better of her, Rhea always used to try and find some way to just be around Y/n. Rhea could come to her with anything, and Y/n would always calm Rhea down. A part of Rhea felt guilty for using Y/n in that way, but that wasn't going to stop Rhea anytime soon. Especially not whenever the very thought of Y/n made Rhea's skip a beat no matter where she was. It was hard to stand there and look angry whenever the woman across from Rhea in the ring mentioned Y/n's name. Occasionally a threat or two would be thrown out, and that generally snapped Rhea out of her little happy place.

"You're weak, and the company you keep is only making you weaker. Next time we see each other in the ring, I'll show everybody just how much of your edge you've lost." Rhea kept her jaw clenched and resolve strong as her opponent droned on and on. There was only so much that Rhea cared to listen to, and Rhea found herself just walking away from the woman who she saw as beneath her. Rhea was the champion, she had beaten the most dominant force in the women's division to claim the title as her own. She was the greatest champion that the WWE Women's division would ever know. Soon enough they would run out of people to compare her to, man and woman like.

"You should have hit her." Rhea's eyebrows shot up in surprise at Y/n's words. Rhea knew that Y/n watched her every single time that Rhea went out to the ring, but usually Y/n would have something to say about how Rhea didn't have to escalate every situation. "They won't take you seriously as a champion when you prove them right like that."

"What do you mean?" Rhea asked Y/n.

"I mean they're right about you and me. You've been hanging around me and I love you, but I'm damaging your reputation. I'm the one who loses because I won't finish the job. If I don't have to fight someone, then I just won't. You have to keep fighting, it's who you are. It's how you became the champion in the first place, don't let me ruin everything that you've worked towards," Y/n rambled. Rhea cracked a smile as she stared down at Y/n. "What? Were you even listening to me?"

"Yeah, I was, and somewhere in all that word vomit I'm pretty sure I heard a love confession," Rhea teased.

"You're insufferable-," Y/n rolled her eyes, "-but I love you."

"Yeah, I love you too." Rhea leaned down to give Y/n a very quick and chaste kiss.

(it’s not he cries himself to sleep about it) and to cash in on audience hate not only does he keep getting flattened in matches with much bigger guys they’ve started doing backstage segments of him strapped to a torture contraption while ramsay plays to the camera. insult to injury ramsay is a much more popular heel than him. absolutely nothing about the mountain and the hound’s backstory changes they’re both initially heels but sandor has a face-turn to fight and beat gregor. he briefly allies with loras who would thrive as a babyface pro wrestler i think he would enjoy that more than being a knight. bobby b is remembered as one of the greatest of all time from back in the day but unfortunately he still insists on coming out even though he’s old now and no longer good at wrestling and it’s just embarrassing for everyone

why season 4 is actually one of debbie’s best seasons, not her worst.

i feel like when people talk about debbie gallagher, specifically when people who dislike debbie gallagher talk about her, they talk about the change from season 3 to season 4. how she changed from being a sweet innocent kid to a bratty obnoxious teenager. these comments are always so interesting to me because i feel like people’s weird perspectives kind of diminish the purpose of debbie in season 4 which is unfortunate because it really is such a good season for her.

“the change” in question wasn’t really a drastic change at all, her behavior has been basically the same for all eleven seasons. people say her personality changed when in reality, emma kenney changed. season 3 and 4 are supposed to happen very close together, which isn’t realistic considering when they started filming. by season 4, emma and ethan both look much older than they did in the previous season. for ethan, this doesn effect how people like his character because he is both a male and comedic relief, but for emma, this will effect her.

in season 2, debbie acts pretty similarly to how she does in season 4. in both seasons, debbie is obsessed with holly, making boys like her, and looking older than she is. but in season 2, emma kenney’s face is younger, her voice is higher, the clothes she wears don’t fit and the makeup she applies is applied sloppily because she’s so young; she acts cuter. people don’t take debbie trying to act promiscuous in this season seriously because of how little she looks, and two seasons later, the standards don’t seem to apply anymore even though emma kenney is still so young. even if she’s still young, her voice is less squeaky, her body is developing, the clothes fit better, and the makeup is still sloppy but for some reason, it doesn’t make her look as childish. anyone with half a mind can tell she’s a kid trying to look like an adult, yet for some reason, when she does it in this season as a thirteen year old, it’s completely different than when she did it as an eleven year old.

she stops being as cute, and so her personality doesn’t really work. debbie has always been intelligent, extra, sassy, loyal, and desperate for attention. she’s always had a debilitating fear of abandonment and issues with attachment. when you’re babyfaced and a kid, these traits are funny, then she starts to age and these traits aren’t cute, they’re annoying. when debbie kidnaps a baby in season 1 and fiona is asked why, she says, “it’s debbie”, and although debbie has just done something really bad, it being debbie is an explanation and somehow makes the situation better. later on, when she’s still a kid just a little older, if she does something like this, “it’s debbie” is a bad thing.

i think that if people want to go down the path of saying that she majorly changed or had a downfall, they should consider how her trauma actually did effect her around this time because yes, there were a few minor changes in her that are undeniable.

in season 3, she loses the trust of both of her parents. that’s something. she waits for a whole year for frank, setting up some sort of altar for him and praying. when he returns, she tries desperately to get his love and attention like she has been for the whole show, and it ends in him destroying her room and her school project, insulting her while she’s at it. and so, she goes batshit and starts hitting him as hard as she can. ever since season 1, debbie has been dependent on frank’s attention. she knows he’s bad and she knows what’s wrong with him but she doesn’t care as long as she can still find ways to squeeze a bit of love out of him. this is where that stops. this is where she changes some of her morals, because she realizes that her father won’t change and yeah, it does destroy her. then, he calls dcfs on the siblings and gets them separated, and debbie is put all alone in an abusive home. this is obviously going to destroy a girl with severe abandonment issues, not to mention a girl who has never been alone like this before. so when she gets out of that house, obviously she’s gonna be more traumatized. then, when they go to family court, she discovers that monica and fiona saw each other, and she doesn’t want to be their mother anymore. this breaks debbie even more, and she hears frank’s bullshit about how he loves his kids and even though she’s trying to make herself hate him, she still listens to it and testifies with carl. later on, when she’s talking to sheila and taking care of her, it’s revealed that debbie blames herself for monica leaving, and if monica were to return and stay she would forgive her and welcome her with open arms.

^ so with all of that considered, she’s gonna be fucked up. and that’s only part of the reason she acts the way she does. we have her parents absence, but also her older siblings. with her parents out of the way, she becomes more dependent on fiona, but fiona is now constantly at work, leaving them with sheila, and then… well, we all know what happens with fiona in season 4. as for lip, he’s off at college. that’s that. then, ian has run away and all they have is a couple of texts. she’s desperate to get him back but fiona assures her he’s fine, and she doesn’t believe it. so when she and lip go find ian, he’s different. he’s gone. frank and monica were the people she depended on, then they were gone, and now her older siblings, her three constants and role modes, seem to be gone, too.

debbie becomes colder because she is more alone. no parents, no parental figures, she becomes even more independent than she previously was. she decides she doesn’t need anyone. holly and ellie teach her about a new way to get attention, which is using her sexuality, something she never really tried to use for attention because she’s thirteen. she starts sexualizing herself, and holly tells her she likes matty, so she decides she does. and remember how debbie decided she didn’t need anyone to depend on? yeah, bullshit. matty is a new adult in her life and with frank dying, she needs someone for male validation. matty tells her she’s sexy and a great dancer, and he gives her food, lets her sleep in his bed, and gives her the attention she thinks that she needs. she doesn’t realize she’s being groomed, she thinks it’s love. he even promises to have sex with her when she’s 16 and he’s 23 because his main concern is if it’s illegal or not.

in season 4, debbie is left, used, bullied, humiliated, and ruined. she’s a thirteen year old girl, and being thirteen as a girl is rough. her mind is changing, along with her body, her family, her life, everything. debbie historically does horrible with change, it shouldn’t at all be surprising that she acts how she does. what people view as a bitch or a brat is so obviously a hurt, traumatized child and it’s almost disturbing that people don’t seem to see that. i’ve seen debbie mocked for matty, and while in season 5 the situation got worse, she didn’t do anything wrong in season 4. all that she did was have more attitude, but it was clearly a trauma response. debbie was ignored and hurt in season 4, she was a victim. and she was realistic. the change was expected and necessary for her character. case closed.

The Swerve/Hangman feud is absolutely hilarious and amazing to me.

Swerve is, canonically and admittedly, a morally reprehensible piece of shit who can and will do awful things to achieve his goals. He literally broke into the home of Adam Page and threatened violence upon his child. There are, within the context of kayfabe, basically no redeeming qualities about Swerve. He is A Bad Person.

He also canonically spent two weeks in a casket after All In: London.

"Hangman" Adam Page is beloved, the soul of AEW. He's relatable to many people via his insecurities and his (sometimes successful) attempts to prove himself. He's also relatable to many people because he's canonically awful at keeping touch with people he's considered friends-- basically ghosting Dark Order (who tried very hard to get him to join *and* eventually befriend him). People want to see Hangman win, and see him successful, because he's good at making you want to root for him.

Unless, of course, he's up against Shane "Swerve" Strickland. A man who, for quite some time, the audience does not *want* to boo. Is Swerve a terrible person? Yes. Absolutely.

However. Counter-point: Swerve is so fucking cool.

Like, Swerve has the same inexplicable, innate, coolness to me that Scott Hall did when I was a child.

Swerve is so cool, and such a good wrestler, that people are starting to cheer less for Hangman. Some people are outright booing him now.

Which leads us to where we are today. We have an increasingly unhinged Adam Page (the mustache is the source of the evil in his heart) who is out for blood (figuratively and literally) with Swerve. He hates Swerve. And we have Swerve who is, on some level, trying to take some high roads-- asking Nana not to interfere and so forth.

Swerve's entrance has gone from the dark Mogul Embassy aesthetics to bright colors and comic book-esque aesthetics.

Like, this is functionally a double-turn. Swerve is turning babyface, because how do you *not* turn someone face when they're this over with the fans. By default, Hangman has to turn heel to keep the feud going.

And boy howdy do I want them to keep this feud going. It is the purest blood feud I've seen in a long time.
