LaRue Burbank, mathematician and computer, is just one of the many women who were instrumental to NASA missions.
4 Little Known Women Who Made Huge Contributions to NASA
Women have always played a significant role at NASA and its predecessor NACA, although for much of the agency’s history, they received neither the praise nor recognition that their contributions deserved. To celebrate Women’s History Month – and properly highlight some of the little-known women-led accomplishments of NASA’s early history – our archivists gathered the stories of four women whose work was critical to NASA’s success and paved the way for future generations.
LaRue Burbank: One of the Women Who Helped Land a Man on the Moon
LaRue Burbank was a trailblazing mathematician at NASA. Hired in 1954 at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory (now NASA’s Langley Research Center), she, like many other young women at NACA, the predecessor to NASA, had a bachelor's degree in mathematics. But unlike most, she also had a physics degree. For the next four years, she worked as a "human computer," conducting complex data analyses for engineers using calculators, slide rules, and other instruments. After NASA's founding, she continued this vital work for Project Mercury.
In 1962, she transferred to the newly established Manned Spacecraft Center (now NASA’s Johnson Space Center) in Houston, becoming one of the few female professionals and managers there. Her expertise in electronics engineering led her to develop critical display systems used by flight controllers in Mission Control to monitor spacecraft during missions. Her work on the Apollo missions was vital to achieving President Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the Moon.
Eilene Galloway: How NASA became… NASA

Eilene Galloway wasn't a NASA employee, but she played a huge role in its very creation. In 1957, after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, Senator Richard Russell Jr. called on Galloway, an expert on the Atomic Energy Act, to write a report on the U.S. response to the space race. Initially, legislators aimed to essentially re-write the Atomic Energy Act to handle the U.S. space goals. However, Galloway argued that the existing military framework wouldn't suffice – a new agency was needed to oversee both military and civilian aspects of space exploration. This included not just defense, but also meteorology, communications, and international cooperation.
Her work on the National Aeronautics and Space Act ensured NASA had the power to accomplish all these goals, without limitations from the Department of Defense or restrictions on international agreements. Galloway is even to thank for the name "National Aeronautics and Space Administration", as initially NASA was to be called “National Aeronautics and Space Agency” which was deemed to not carry enough weight and status for the wide-ranging role that NASA was to fill.
Barbara Scott: The “Star Trek Nerd” Who Led Our Understanding of the Stars

A self-described "Star Trek nerd," Barbara Scott's passion for space wasn't steered toward engineering by her guidance counselor. But that didn't stop her! Fueled by her love of math and computer science, she landed at Goddard Spaceflight Center in 1977. One of the first women working on flight software, Barbara's coding skills became instrumental on missions like the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and the Thermal Canister Experiment on the Space Shuttle's STS-3. For the final decade of her impressive career, Scott managed the flight software for the iconic Hubble Space Telescope, a testament to her dedication to space exploration.
Dr. Claire Parkinson: An Early Pioneer in Climate Science Whose Work is Still Saving Lives

Dr. Claire Parkinson's love of math blossomed into a passion for climate science. Inspired by the Moon landing, and the fight for civil rights, she pursued a graduate degree in climatology. In 1978, her talents landed her at Goddard, where she continued her research on sea ice modeling. But Parkinson's impact goes beyond theory. She began analyzing satellite data, leading to a groundbreaking discovery: a decline in Arctic sea ice coverage between 1973 and 1987. This critical finding caught the attention of Senator Al Gore, highlighting the urgency of climate change.
Parkinson's leadership extended beyond research. As Project Scientist for the Aqua satellite, she championed making its data freely available. This real-time information has benefitted countless projects, from wildfire management to weather forecasting, even aiding in monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic. Parkinson's dedication to understanding sea ice patterns and the impact of climate change continues to be a valuable resource for our planet.

Lead field experiments, manage experimental sites, and collect and manage data. Ideal candidate will have experience in project coordination and ecological field work.

The Chicago Park District is seeking an experienced candidate to join our Natural Areas team, a part of the Park District’s Department of Cultural and Natural Resources. The Special Projects Assistant will be a member of the Rethinking Lawns project, a multi-disciplinary team exploring the ecological and ecosystem services benefits of traditional lawns, natural areas, and native, short-statured lawn replacement plantings. More information about the project can be found at rethinkinglawns.com. The ideal candidate will have experience in project coordination and ecological field work, preferably in a leadership capacity.
Key responsibilities include leading a team of seasonal research assistants in collecting data on plant cover, pollinator visitation, water infiltration, temperature, and soils at sites throughout Chicago and at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The Special Projects Assistant will participate in regular project coordination meetings with the research team, and oversee scheduling, coordination, communication, and data entry. They will also regularly interact with landscaping contractors, colleagues and the project team regarding installation and maintenance of plantings. Exceptional candidates will have some experience in data management, and analysis using R, and/or GIS. There are opportunities to present at local and national conferences. Local travel to field sites is required.
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of ecological principles and practices.
Ability to research information and prepare clear written or oral reports.
Ability to relate to field personnel and community groups, particularly in an urban setting.
Data entry, writing, computer skills.
Knowledge of contemporary research and communication practices.
City of Chicago residency is required at time of job start.
This position is based out of North Park Village (5801 N. Pulaski Rd.) and includes frequent citywide travel.

One year of experience required (paid or unpaid, professional or volunteer) in "the fields of paleontology, geophysics, or geology; assisting fossil preparation, field work in paleontology, paleontology research, paleontology database management, paleontology monitoring, paleo art, or specimen management of fossils; assisting with natural resources research projects; compiling and analyzing scientific data into reports; operating complex sampling, monitoring, and laboratory equipment; or using computer programs such as databases to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report resource management data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents."
Successful completion of at least a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, such as paleontology, geology, earth science, earth history or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics except for financial and commercial mathematics.
I don't know if paleontologists usually have to have higher levels of education, but I think this job is called "physical technician (paleontology)" to evade that.

I am a secondary biology teacher at Celebration High School in Celebration, Florida, where I teach AP, honors, and general biology to a diverse student body. My academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington State. During my time there, I conducted fieldwork at Yellowstone National Park and gained lab experience with techniques like titrations and ICP-MS. I also coordinated the college’s Chemistry Club and engaged in science outreach through peer tutoring.
I continued my education with a Master of Science in Marine Biology from James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, where I focused on data analysis and experimental design. My research included analyzing phytoplankton community composition using water samples from reefs off the Great Barrier Reef. As an intern at the JCU Turtle Health Research Facility, I managed research projects and helped establish a laboratory dedicated to Hawksbill metabolism research.
In my teaching career of four years, I've enjoyed creating engaging lessons and supporting students with diverse needs, achieving an 80% pass rate on Florida's Biology End of Course Assessment. I'm passionate about inspiring students to pursue higher education and vocational skills beyond high school. Additionally, I'm deeply committed to advancing education within diverse communities, particularly by addressing the educational needs of incarcerated youth populations through empowerment programs focused on personal growth and societal reintegration.

I am a student of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, and this stems from my background as an Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) student. During my studies, I encountered many challenges, such as balancing figures, analyzing data, and interpreting financial statements. I also took the Bookkeeping NC III exam, which presented me with numerous challenges, but I successfully passed it. This achievement motivated me to trust in my abilities and showed me that I can excel even more in financial analysis and data management. How to find a comet before it hits Earth
How do you find a comet that could pose a threat to Earth but hasn't passed our planet in the last 200 years or more? You look for its footprint.
This is the basis of research led by Samantha Hemmelgarn, a first-year doctoral student in Northern Arizona University's Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science. In a study published in The Planetary Science Journal in November, she and her co-authors, including adviser Nick Moskovitz from Lowell Observatory, used data from meteor showers—the "footprints" left by comets—to pinpoint where these comets are in the sky and determine whether they pose a threat to Earth.
"This research gets us closer to defending Earth because it gives us a model to guide searches for these potentially hazardous objects," Hemmelgarn said.
The why and how of the research
Historically, long-period comets, which have orbits of more than 200 years, have been virtually invisible to researchers until they get close to Earth and move toward the sun. The fear, of course, is that one will go undiscovered in the sky until it's too late and then hit the Earth. While the actual risk is incredibly small, Hemmelgarn said, the impact of even a small comet could be catastrophic to life on Earth, causing another Ice Age and ozone layer loss.
So, they want to be proactive in identifying these comets. The researchers used a sample of 17 meteor showers they knew had long-period comet parents and created synthetic comets, which are models that represent where the parent comets could be in space based on the paths of those meteor showers.
They compared the location of the real parent comets the last time they were near the sun to where the model predicted each comet would be. In most of the tests, the model accurately predicted a comet's location and helped predict the comet's direction and speed, which will help astronomers know where to find the real one with a telescope.
This means researchers can find these comets in the sky before they get close to Earth.
"Even if the next extinction level impact is millions of years away, it's been fascinating to develop a model that traces the 'shooting stars' humans marvel at every night back to a region in space where we can discover the objects that left them behind," Hemmelgarn said.
Her journey to this discovery
The day she graduated, Hemmelgarn would never have predicted that this exciting piece of the planetary defense puzzle would one day have her name on it.
Of course, that's because she graduated with a degree in marketing and a job offer as assistant manager for Walgreens, where she did a management internship. For years, she thrived in that environment, employing her problem-solving skills to ensure her store stocked what her diverse customer base needed.
However, with the advent of online retail, she found herself without the chance to solve problems and make decisions about her store. When she met her now-wife, Hayley, in 2019, Hemmelgarn realized she wanted something new.
"When I saw the passion and joy she exhibited for her career as a genomic epidemiologist, I realized that the same feeling I once had for retail management wasn't there anymore," she said. "I always had a passing interest in astronomy, began researching how a person could make a career in that field and decided it was as good a time as any to change careers since I still have many working years ahead of me."
In 2020, she started a bachelor's program in physics and astrophysics at NAU, which she finished a year ago, and in the fall, she began a doctoral degree. This is her first publication as first author.
In the next phase of this work, Hemmelgarn and Moskovitz plan to apply this method to 247 long-period comet meteor showers with unknown parents. They'll use data from the Rubin Observatory's upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) to find the faintest objects, which Hemmelgarn hopes will include some of these missing long-period comets.

I do not, I would very much like to get two - one I worked with a friend who is an artist to design as a tribute to Pop, the second is my grandfather's name in his handwriting. We were extremely close and even years later I am still completely devastated by his passing. I actually bought Pop with the money he left me, making Pop all the more special and a connection to him (he loved horses and loved that I rode, and in all honestly most likely would have bought Pop for me himself if he had been alive, it makes me so sad that they never got to meet because I know my grandfather would have loved him) however I am absolutely terrified of needles and keep chickening out. I'm hoping to eventually get over it though. In all honesty, I feel like even if I got one of the dumb tattoos I dreamed about as a kid I'd probably still like it - I was very into art history / literature growing up so a lot of the tattoos I fantasized about were rooted in that.

I did! I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. My career focus was initial content marketing and copy writing in the sports industry before I moved over to the the tech / software industry. I've found myself doing less and less content marketing and taking on more data analytic focused roles which has been a lot of fun and an unexpected development - especially because I was initially hired for my current role as an account executive (I sold out, I was chasing the money and going into account management / sales lol)
3) whats your go to drink when you go out?
Depends what kind of night we're having lol If I'm out to dinner usually some kind of silly fun bespoke cocktail with way too much sugar. If it's a chiller bar situation or a sporting event then I am a High Noon girlie. If we're going to get rowdy bring on the vodka red bulls

Ethics
My personal ethics related to nature interpretation are driven by the concept of preservation for future generations, and hugely driven by my sense of responsibility for our planet's well-being. The driver of responsibility is multi-faceted: taking accountability for one’s previous actions, as well as taking an authoritative position to spark future action and educate others. As a nature interpreter and environmentally conscious person in general, I am the most influenced by an unconventional driver: fear. When I think of 15 years in the future, I am overwhelmed by a sense of uncertainty and sadness because I do not know what the state of the world will be, based on the trajectory we are currently on. I have been obsessed with climate change biology, biodiversity, wildlife management, and forest ecology, since starting my undergrad 3 years ago, which has subsequently transformed my hobbies and interests outside of school into hiking, camping, and exploring nature. I have developed an intensive love for nature that I want everyone to experience as well; I love bringing friends, family, and my boyfriend on adventures and showing them my favorite beaches, trails, and little secret spots in the forest. However, I fear I will not be able to do these things with my children one day because of habitat degradation and loss. This is not an irrational fear, even the textbook describes climate change as a looming threat that requires action and the need for policy-makers worldwide to better understand the importance of climate change (Beck et al., 2018).
I have always been interested in eco-friendly lifestyle choices such as zero waste, carbon-neutral practices, and ethically sourced food for the preservation of our planet. When I was much younger I thought that everyone had to be 100% plastic-free and make sacrifices for our planet, but my beliefs have shifted… I still believe that it is everyone’s responsibility to help save our planet but I can recognize that unfortunately, even my most intense efforts on an individual scale were lackluster compared to the negative contributions of large corporations and governments.
My values are a very strong driver in my life, as my beliefs on the importance of climate change action and the preservation of the planet have had me in debate lately on what I want to do for my graduate studies. I am not sure if I want to do my Bachelor of Education (as originally planned) or a master's degree to contribute to climate change research. My dream research would be to develop improved carbon sequestration modeling, specifically for agriculture. This is a field of research very dear to my heart because it is the intersection of my major and minors (Biological Science, Mathematics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) & Environmental Analysis), as well as being in demand research for policy-makers to set accurate goals. As the textbook states, a key role of nature interpretation is helping people accurately perceive the world (Beck et al., 2018). We are currently in a situation where we have inaccurate carbon storage and sequestration models in agriculture (and other areas such as the Arctic). This research could severely influence our carbon capture goals and efforts needed for Canada to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as promised in The Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act (Government of Canada, 2024).

I feel horrible guilt about climate change, habitat degradation, and the loss of biodiversity, which has made me feel obligated to help “save the planet” as it is partially my responsibility. For so many problems in the world, we think things are not our responsibility and that someone else more qualified or higher up-the-food-chain will come along and fix them, but this research seems perfect for me to tackle because I am very passionate about the issue and my entire undergrad lends itself to this research.
Now you might be thinking “So what’s the problem? What is stopping you from pursuing this research?”
I am in a constant debate between becoming a teacher and prioritizing raising children and starting a family young or if I should throw myself into academia by prioritizing research for the next several years. On the one hand, I would love to pour my entire heart and soul into raising children and being a nature interpreter for them and my students, on the other hand, I could devote all of my energy to the longevity of the planet which could benefit the entire world. Ethier way, I am very motivated as a nature interpreter to spread awareness about climate change and reverse the degradation we have done to the planet, intending to preserve a healthy planet for generations to come, because what type of world would we be bringing children into if we do not crack down and make changes now?
This blog has been incredibly intimidating for me because of how deep the prompt is this week. I have completely rewritten his blog 2.5 times since Monday; it has sent me into crazy spirals doubting my entire life plan and rearranging my planned courses, I even set up a meeting with an academic advisor. So after a week of wrestling with my personal ethics and goals/responsibilities as a nature interpreter, I have realized that I cannot drive into a master's degree out of guilt and that I can feel satisfied with my contributions to helping the planet without compromising my life plan and other personal beliefs. Our textbook mentions the importance of teaching people that the individual behavior of everyone contributes to both the problems and solutions of climate change (Beck et al., 2018). The best approach for me to accomplish my goals and feel I have done my part is to use the skills I've developed as a nature interpreter in this class! I will encourage others to see the beauty in the planet and help them take action against climate change as a nature interpreter. I will help spread awareness about climate change through word-of-mouth and social media, be active in politics and talk to my municipal representatives/elected officials, lead the eco-club at the school I will be teaching at someday, and make eco-friendly household changes like investing in energy-efficient appliances, reducing water waste, having a garden, composting and shopping locally. I will do my part to tackle climate change by taking the powerful role of a nature interpreter and leading by example!
I would like to end by sharing my favourite family photo: three generations of my family (me, my sister, my mom, and my grandma). I love this photo because it represents the biggest motivator of my personal ethics: the prosperity of future generations.

A Chapter in Jelaine’s Life: Some things About being a Reader
An Interview Article by Francis and Nad (February 2024)

Readers have different approaches to picking up a novel and have varying tastes– and for a bookworm, you could imagine all the stories that had accumulated during their journey in the vast spaces of a library. Each shelf, rows and rows of stories that came from people all over history and realities. For this interview, we found someone who can share their experience with literature. Our resident bookworm for this article is Jelaine Dio.
BACKGROUND
The 25-year-old graduate of Bachelor of Science in Psychology found herself reading stories in her past time during 5th Grade. While the other kids in her class were playing outside during break time, she was exploring her English textbook for the short story collection; that is when the world opened up to her. Now, she reads novels from the likes of Sally Rooney, John Green, Jandy Nelson and Coco Mellors—some of her current favorite authors that she noted. Her current read is The Guest by Emma Cline, previously followed by Jenny Mustard’s Okay Days.
A lot of these books share a similar genre: Contemporary fiction. She stated that it was her favorite genre in fictional literature because she found herself easily visualizing the story if it is closer to real life or based on certain personality traits.

KEY EXPERIENCES
“Summer Time: A Book A Day”
Only after a few years of falling in love with the short stories, she managed to read over 7 books a week during her summer vacations. Although some readings are motivated by school credits, she still read an impressive amount during that time. She noted that she has read over 200 books since then. As life goes by, people get busy with their time. Even if life gets busy, she always tries to slip in a moment to read. She said “I read my book if I was waiting for something or if there’s a downtime—whether in public or at home. Because I do not have any cellular data on my phone when I leave the house, I always bring my book for times when I must wait.”
We asked her what was the first fiction she had read and she directed us back to her 3rd year of Junior High. She asked her classmate for a recommendation for a book to start reading fiction “She is also a bookwork and reads her book on an iPad. I asked her ‘What ‘s a good fiction to read first?’ and she let me borrow a copy of ‘The Little Prince’”. She noted that before that, she was not reading much then. After picking up the book, that is when she started being a book fanatic again.
On average, outside of summer time when she finishes a book a day, her average reading time then lasts for two to 3 days per novel. Now, she slowed down to finishing a book in a week but if she has work, then she finishes a book in a month. After she finishes a book, she takes a day to take a break and she picks up another book to start.
I’ll See It Through, Always
When she reads a book, she sees through it, even if it is average “It’s like in the movies, for example. I watch a movie and I find myself enjoying it but when I see some bad reviews, I don’t find it as a waste of time because I enjoyed the work”. She also added how she also thinks about the effort the author took to finish their story. That’s why sometimes when she finds a story in BookTok, a community in TikTok that shares content about literature, she reads it because of how it was marketed. Sometimes, she ends up reading erotic fiction without realizing it because of how the synopsis was advertised. During the interview, she laughingly said that she found that it was her guilty pleasure to read those types of stories
INSIGHTS
Eenie-Meenie-Miney Book!
When entering a bookstore, some people may feel overwhelmed when offered a lot of options. Jelaine is one of these individuals. Because of this, she has devised three ways to choose the next book she will indulge herself in. One is looking at its cover. As ironic as it is for a bibliophile, she does not really follow the famous saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover." When she sees that a book has an aesthetic and eye-catching cover, she will pick it up and read it. Though on some occasions, she will go through the book’s synopsis before buying it.
Another way is through recommendations in social media’s “BookTok". She follows countless book lovers on Instagram that post their recommendations in their feeds. When she sees these posts, she will buy two to three of those novels and put them on her shelf of books she will later read. Lastly, she picks up and buys the next novel that she will read by browsing the books of the same authors as the previously finished novel she enjoyed. With these three ways, she has fortunately bought novels that she considered a “good book".
"A Good Book"
It is fair to think that a bookworm that has read hundreds of novels would have a grasp of what makes a "good book". In Jelaine’s viewpoint, a novel that has a striking and grand plot is not important, but what is important is the story’s overall flow. She also added that “ A good book is something you can genuinely relate to the character even though that character has a different experience compared to you." Jelaine also mentioned that when she underlined and bookmarked a lot of lines and parts of a book that she is reading, then that novel is exceptional for her.

LESSONS TO SHARE
A Wider Vocabulary And Getting In Touch To One’s Feelings And Emotions
For almost half of her lifetime, Jelaine has been “sticking her nose" into numerous books in various genres and lengths. With all these consumed fictional works, she has gained extensive knowledge in vocabulary. She quoted, “Due to reading, my word bank is overflowing". As a result, she can understand words in novels that are unusual while also understanding each sentence that she reads quickly.
Reading has also helped her to become more empathetic, since she is able to know and feel what the characters are going through and understand them as the story goes on. Hence, when a person reads, they can be in touch with their emotions and process them in a healthy manner.
Something for Readers
Jelaine’s go-to book recommendation to whoever asks her is Celeste Ng’s first novel, "Everything I Never Told You". She deemed this as a good recommendation since it has themes that will make a person feel multiple emotions throughout its entirety. As she shares what the book is about, she mentions that it circles around the idea of family dynamics and how grief affects each member. She said, "This novel is heavy and heart-wrenching". Another book recommendation she mentioned was "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" written by Gail Honeyman, which is also a heavily emotional novel.
In addition, she mentioned a quote from one of the books that genuinely made an impact on her. The line was “They teach you growing up that you are only one thing at a time-angry, lonely, content--but he's never found that to be true. He is a dozen things at once. He is lost and scared and grateful, he is sorry and happy and afraid. But he is not alone.��� This is from V. E. Schwab’s, "The Invisible Life Of Addie Larue. With these few pieces of line, she feels comforted and loved since it tells the reader that it is good to feel emotion and not to invalidate one’s feelings.
