Look at this boy, look how much he regrets saying that line as soon as he's said it, but he still holds his ground and walks away. You know he spends all night thinking about it, about Pat's wounded expression, thinking this is actually going to be it. That he's ended things once and for all.
And then...
Look at his face when Pat turns up the very next morning.
LOOK AT IT!!!
You can't tell me he's not relieved as FUCK. He looks like Pat just came back from the DEAD! He full on stares at this boy in totally blissful reverie for a full five seconds and he only stops because Junior climbs into the truck and asks him to move over.
And then, we get this nonsense.
Oh, you're angry he's there, dimples? Soooooo irritated? WHO DO YOU THINK YOU'RE FOOLING? He literally just watched you mooning over him as soon as he turned the corner. Just give it up. You're ECSTATIC that Pat didn't listen to you. You are so excited about this little road trip away from everybody, don't even try to lie.
I'm behind on the Bad Buddy rewatch and catching up currently but omg episode 6 just solidifies PatPran in such a wonderful way. They don't know how good they're gonna have it. One thing is extremely important, though, and I think it's what makes their relationship so exemplary:
Pat and Pran have their own language
Obviously they don't have any specific lingo they speak to each other that contains any hidden messages. But as many have pointed out that their level of communication is not only extremely healthy but one of the keys of success in eventually making them a wonderful couple, I think the phrase "you speak my language" is something that applies heavily here. It only takes some time for them to realize what that language is, and for them it's all about what's actually not being said.
Pat and Pran grew up not being allowed to voice things directly when it comes to how they truly think and feel about each other. Not around family, friends, teachers, on occasion they don't dare it admit to themselves, and especially not to each other. Saying something direct is like touching something radioactive, practically. Even when Pat was confessing how he felt on the rooftop before the kiss, he doesn't come out with "I like you." Pran has to ask if he wants to be friends and he replies no - and everyone present (characters and audience) can understand what that really means.
Going into episode 6 it's easy to understand why there's a struggle: Pran isn't saying anything and Pat is begging to know what's on his mind. Because even though their form of communication is about what's not being said, Pat still needs words. He can get the riddle but only if he's given one. They have to rely on physical cues or talking through someone else to send the right message. The first time they run into each other on the beach at night and Pran yells at him, all Pat can say is "We're talking now?" because finally!!!! He is being thrown a bone! And Pran's walls immediately come down just a little because he realizes what he's done (and maybe can't help but feel a tug on his heart because of it no matter what logic he will use to guard it).
He's not ready for the conversation though and makes it clear that Pat will have to keep waiting. What I love is that even if Pat seems over the top with trying to get Pran's attention, he doesn't force an answer. He asks repeatedly and takes no several times. When they meet again on the beach, he finally figures out that he's been trying to communicate the wrong way. It's about what isn't being said, so he doesn't say it, he writes it.
It allows Pran to relax, and finally he begins using riddles. Pat tries to get something direct one last time and in response he gets "I don't want you to understand me... Just mind your business." Then it clicks. Pran has just given Pat a reason to explain his own actions because he knows one thing Pat will do is talk about his own business. So Pat clears up an issue that he knows rests between them: his relationship with Ink. He then throws Pran's line back at him and both of them fall into what I call 'their language'.
It isn't simply the competition. Pran knows Pat's gotten the riddle and feels free to both play his usual role in escalating the dynamic and poke around at the idea of them pursuing each other romantically. The kiss conversation was never needed in a direct sense because neither of them are able to dwell on the past without also bringing up personal pain, and they already had their moment of sharing those pains. Both of them can now approach moving forward and being excited, especially with the competition being about not confessing how they feel yet regardless of how aware they are about those feelings.
Pat and Pran make a practice of dancing around the truth until they're both pros at knowing what the other one means without so much as a wink or a smirk. They get so good at it that they know the only one as good as themselves is the other and no one else would be worth trying to put on their level. It keeps things fresh because this form of communication requires both accuracy and creativity. One thing our boys have shown is that they have endless creativity and years of understanding between each other that allows for the kind of accuracy required. Which is how we land with the interaction at the end and it is just the amount of crazy necessary to drive the relationship forward.
(adding this song to the post because it has exactly the energy they're giving and also it's kinda the point)
I love this moment in ep 6 when Pat says, "thank you for saving Pa." It is such a turning point in their relationship. Until then, Pat has carried the guilt of not acting on that day near the river, and of Pran's transfer. He has constantly been trying to make it up to Pran, feeling like he owes him. And he has done a ton of stuff for Pran, but it has never felt monumental enough compared to the stuff Pran has done or gone through.
For Pat this was the moment he let go of all of that. And in a way Pran truly became one of his own, rather than an "other" he owes or has to make up stuff to. Recognising that all he ever needed to do was thank Pran. That there was nothing to feel inadequate or responsible for.
And while he told Pran that he thought about things from his perspective and Pran was put in the same position as him, so he could never hate him for any of it. Pat also finally gave himself that same consideration, empathy and kindness. Such a healing moment from the shit Pat's dad put him through. I love him. Iove them.
What scene/dialogue in bad buddy absolutely devastated you (but in the larger context of the episode and the show got ignored cos we had bigger traumas to unpack) and why for me was it this scene when Pat asks Pran when he's going to get the documents from LogTech and then proceeding to say that he wants to go visit the musical instrument shop?
I cant believe i didnt properly process it earlier but Pat really asked him to go to the musical instrument shop.
Not because he wants to visit the shop but because he cant take one more second of being apart from Pran and whatever this awkward almost hostile distance that Pran had put between them. The fact that he was trying to say that casually, as if all was as "normal" as it was pre rooftop kiss, when he was feeling anything but casual on the inside, his heart being on the bottom of the feelings-roller-coaster he had on been ever since that moment in the instrument shop when it finally hit him, what he had been oblivious to all along, that Pran was there, and that Pat missed him even while he was standing right in front of him and that somewhere along the way he had fallen in love with him without even knowing.
Just look at him. He's so so so in love it physically hurts ME ( an independent (NOT) unbaised (NOT) observer).
And so now he tries to inject a sense of normality and familiarity into this gap in their relationship by asking Pran to accompany him to the instrument store, do what they have done a bunch of times already but this time maybe even in hopes of telling him what he had felt the last time they were there together??!? Do you realize how devastating that is??
Watching Pat ask that with trepidation, for the first time, well and truly unsure of what is or isnt allowed to him in his dynamic with Pran and knowing (in hindsight) Pran's plan of cutting him off at least temporaririly and knowing Pat's efforts wont be reciprocated (for at least a while more) just hurts so bad i almost couldnt believe it didnt strike me the first 5 times i watched the episode.
It's literally just 10 seconds and probably one of the most un-remarkable moments in the entire episode if not show and yet i am so so so deeply shattered by it.
Is that just me being unwell or did you tear up too...? Feel free to add more devastation i really do wanna know if ive missed any more small but not insignificant moments like these.
It's in the way that Pran left the rooftop thinking that he's lost Pat forever because he doesn't know a reality where any of this works out it's the way Pran expects Pat to leave him alone after he gets bored (because that's what this is to Pat, a challenge, isn't it?) It's the way Pran never really believes that love is something he will get because that requires knowing someone and the only person to ever know Pran was Pat and he can not have Pat, can he? It's the way he drags his hope and beats it and bashes it violently at the beach because he can not be someone who can risk his sanity Once Again for the same fierce eyes it's the way Pat stayed it's the way Pat reminded Pran that he will love Pran on purpose it's the way the impulsive man learnt and showed patience for Pran it's the way Pat got helpless at seeing Pran not close to him it's the way Pran needed someone tangible and Pat needed someone who saw behind all his lies and they both found each other, time and again, next to each other.
Vs
(Episode 10)
It's in the way Pran left the rooftop with Pat because he doesn't know a reality where any of this works out and it's the way he finally crumbles in front of Pat just with the toll of having Pat it's the way that his hope, the one he remade with all his special rainbow pens, is violently bashed in front of him as he watches it's the way Pat takes Pran away and Pran let's himself be impulsive it's the way Pat stood his ground as a steady shore, close and unmoving, when Pran broke against him in waves it's the way Pran had the tangiblity of Pat's arms while every single one of his worst fears became just as tangible and real when Pat spoke the truth and they found each other, after it all, next to each other, once again.
It's the way that Pat and Pran are both broken bones (made of the same exact thing) of a system that can't function without them [why did you do it if you knew? Did you forget to save my reputation?] , rather than peices of a broken heart, because broken bones must be can be fixed, for the system to stay alive [I didn't raise you to talk to me like this]
It's the way that Pran and Pat did not let the world change them but that did not mean they weren't just two kids against everyone who they cared for; it did not mean that they weren't just two kids who were punished for being in love.
It's funny that the two faculties are such rivals since the two professors seem very chummy with each other.
God Nanon's acting here is SO GOOD. The way he can just stare unblinking and closed off, shutting Pat down. It's gut-punching.
That's the second time Ming has turned up and Pran, troubled and upset, has walked away from Pat. I'm gonna throw fists...
Wai telling Pran he's dramatic...oh honey in a few eps you're gonna drop a whole-ass curtain and reveal Pat and Pran's relationship because you're upset with Pran. Who's exactly dramatic here?
And we all thought Dissaya was being extra but now all her protests are understandable -> not wanting Pat to give Pran something from their professor, saying Pran will get it himself...the pettiness kind of makes sense when we know that Ming lied to a professor to get the scholarship that was going to go to Dissaya. No wonder she'd want Pran to go to the professor himself.
Oh all the mint green this ep!! In fact the wardrobe design of this whole ep is so well thought out.
Pa's obliviousness!
The look of adoration on Pat's face when he gets on the bus 😍
Pat speaking overly politely to Wai when Pat is sat in Wai's seat (he uses 'pom' for 'I' instead of 'guu')
UNCLE TONG! JUNIOR!
There was a post at some point about the symbolism of the sweet basil...but I can't find it...anyone remember?
The way Pat says "Talk to me" at 6:30 in part 2 makes me go akdjhskfdh;ashdf. Pran is SO STRONG to resist.
(omg Ohm's forearm muscle at 7:10 in part 2)
I love Pat's red belt (and the mic pack showing!)
Sorry but I love the comedy cliché of 'if we ignore him he'll eventually leave us alone' at which the person in question creeps into the frame and settles themselves amongst the group.
But Pat, my god, had some gall to join their table, smile at their 'if looks could kill' faces, and then EAT WAI'S MEATBALL. This man! What's that quote from the book? "People act terrible when they need love and I need it from him tremendously"... Well it kind of applies here if we interpret 'terrible' to be 'stupid' because Pat literally walked into the lion's den for Pran.
OH MY GOD The shift that Pran(Nanon) makes from 10:00-10:03 in part 2 is incredible. He comes to Pat gunning for a fight, this is what they do, they bicker and fight, but Pat's done, he's tired. Pat meets Pran's intensity, absorbs it, and then softly asks him is they're talking now and Pran...doesn't know what to do with that. He expected more of what happened in Pat's dorm room in ep 2 but those times are over. That was BK. This is AK. (before kiss/after kiss - it was that momentous...for us all).
SECRET! The way I didn't even notice it was the new ost because I was too drawn in by Pat and Pran's interactions.
It's the way they just needed to be away from everyone and everything else. The way Pran couldn't resist in the end to throw some jibes at Pat when it was just them and Junior in the truck. The way even Pran gives a small nod to the question whether they're friends by the market seller.
"We're just born this way" 😭
The show really did their best to incorporate the product placement well. Printer scene my beloved.
There's also a post out there somewhere which explains how Pat eating the melon is symbolic of saying 'f*ck you' to Wai...
I still can't get over Pat rolling up the 'sleeves' of his sleeveless shirt.
When I first watched the bet scene, I felt the switch between Pran caging himself off from Pat and avoiding answering him to goading Pat about how much he liked Pran a bit jarring. I didn't really understand the journey. I still feel like it's rushed in some way but I wonder if that's to do with the nuance of the language that we're not privy to as translation readers. Anyway, I do love that Pat finally found a way to engage Pran and thus unlocked their love language - competing.
And speaking of their competition, what a way to start! Seaweed snacks my beloved. Feral musky scented hoe Pran unlocked! The way Pran licked Pat's finger, causing both Pat to short circuit but also the entire fandom to collectively Lose It™. This is what I mean by raising the bar. Not only with story and acting and design...but the little things like the goddamn product placement which pay for the series to be made but when used well can help drive the plot. And these seaweed snacks definitely drove the plot.
Gun WHY??? Why are you so dumb? I love you but you're so dumb. Please why are you like this?
Chinzilla Baby. Chinzilla Baby. CHINZILLA BABY.
Tinn is so relatable what the heck. They're both so relatable what the heck.
Legit thought the band was about to try and math their way into figuring out who Tinn likes for a second there. 🤣
I love these boys with my whole heart.
Gonna be honest, I've listened to Nunew's version of this song so many times that I was taken aback to not hear his voice.
No not him thinking about Tinn. I'm screaming
No not Tinn showing up and Gun being flustered
I can't. I'm not going to survive this show. It's too damn cute.
Not them thinking Sound likes Gun! We're you not there when he kicked Gun out of the band? Why are all of these boys so dumb? (Affectionate)
Not Tiw assigning the couples! Greatest friend ever. "There's six of you, we'll pair you all up. Gun and Tinn are together." 🤣
Rebranding the questions!
They really trusted Sound and Win to go practice by themselves and not kill each other?
Got too distracted by the show to write anything.
THE FISTBUMP. Gun wearing Pran's color and Tinn wearing Pat's color. I'm losing my mind!
Not them using Friend as an insult like Pran and Pat did during The Bet.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN 1 WEEK LATER GET BACK HERE AND TELL ME WHAT THE HECK THAT WAS
Thank you
I love them your honor. Yes with my whole heart. All of them. This show is so good. I become more and more endeared to these 8 boys every week. I'm so glad I didn't wait until it was over to watch it.
Hii 💕 thanks for asking me the questions! Sorry I went a little overboard with my answers but they were a lot of fun to write.
14. bl you think is underrated
There’s a few really great shows that come to mind like Triage and Vice Versa but the first one I thought of was actually My Secret Love. It aired May this year but I don’t remember seeing many people talking about it. Probably because the premise is pretty straightforward, set in University, enemies to lovers, nothing particularly genre defying or unpredictable. I think it’s underrated because it features a lot of great friendships and some of my favourite relationship tropes and is a well made enjoyable show.
It has the essential Enemies to Lovers but also my favourite underrated trope of Best Friends to Lovers. As well as an adorable established relationship couple and the cute fan and idol style relationship Bomb and Bear have. All four couples are very likeable and are successful in having their own individual storylines without making the show feel too cramped. The show balances it’s lightheartedness and jokes with it’s more emotional scenes while it starts off quite unserious, it becomes a bit more intense as the show progresses. I don’t think it’s the greatest show ever and it’s not one of my favourites but for some reason it’s the show I thought of when I saw the question. I definitely recommend giving it a watch and, if you do, let me know what you think.
17. best kiss
No contest. Didn’t even have to think about it. Bad Buddy episode 5 rooftop scene is the best kiss scene hands down. The range of emotions I felt watching it. The way Ohm and Nanon put their whole souls into that kiss. And the scenes leading up to it? The building of tension throughout the whole episode culminating in ’Do you want us to be friends?’ ‘No.’ Makes me crazy. The first part of the kiss followed by the slow separation and then Pran pulling Pat in to kiss him again like it’s the only time he will ever get to do it? Actually makes me insane. The music. The hands in each others hair. The absolute heartbreak you can feel them both go through at the end. Pat’s sadness coming only after Pran leaves because for a second he is just so happy that he finally understands his feelings and that they are reciprocated and it’s beautiful but him soon realising that it’s not all okay and that it’s never going to be that simple for them. I can’t fathom a scene that could possibly beat it and I wish I could watch it again for the first time every day.
Honorary mention to my favourite kiss of the year which is the Eclipse episode 6 imaginary kiss. I know it’s not real but the fact is we all thought it was, for everyone watching, Akk and Ayan’s feelings for each other had been slowly building and the tension had been building almost imperceptibly throughout the episodes and they went from enemies to more than enemies so smoothly that you could barely pinpoint when their feelings appeared or even when they became aware of those feelings. The kiss seemed like a solid awareness of those feelings from both sides and presented a vulnerability from both characters that we had yet to see (even if it was fake vulnerability). And maybe because we watching knew these characters weren’t aware enough of their feelings to kiss each other that the kiss seemed that much more intense? Because despite not understanding their feelings for each other and still being enemies they were kissing anyway. Like once they started they were only drawn further in and got lost in it. Plus of course the scenes leading up to it that made it that much more real being the intense and emotional beach scene and the tension of the locker room scene where they 100% would have kissed if they hadn’t been interrupted. Also it’s super funny that everyone was waxing poetic about the kiss and what it meant for their relationship only for us all to get clowned as soon as the next episode came out.
Basically first kiss scenes are my favourite thing ever because I love the tension and emotions and everything about them and you should never (always) ask me about first kiss scenes because I will go crazy talking about how much I love them.
